The brigantine Clio was built at Appledore for the Newfoundland trade in 1894, one of the toughest runs in the business for a small wooden sailing ship. She is seen here close hauled in heavy weather, clawing to the westward, which is perhaps how she met her end. The Clio went missing after only two voyages.
