USNS ZEUS (T-ARC 7)
SPECIAL SHIPS FOR SPECIAL MISSIONS Military Sealift Command (MSC) crews and operates a fleet of more than 40 ships that sail the globe to support U.S. Navy fleet operations and special missions worldwide. One of our special mission ships USNS ZEUS (T-ARC 7) was the first cable ship to be designed and built by the Navy. ZEUS is 513 feet in length with diesel electric power and cruises at 15 knots. ZEUS maintains the Navy's capability for laying and repairing underwater cables and related hardware. She is equipped with state-of-the-art cable handling machinery, precision navigation equipment, twin screws, and side propulsion units to accommodate the exacting maneuvers needed for cable operations. In addition, the ship undertakes acoustic, hydrographic, oceanographic, and ocean engineering surveys. Crewing requirements for ZEUS are unique; the ship's complement includes crewmembers whose duties are dedicated to her cable mission. ZEUS has two Chief Officers, one of whom, the Chief Officer (Cable), is responsible for cable operations while the other performs traditional First Mate responsibilities. She also has two Boatswain Mates. The cable crew consists of a Boatswain Mate and nine Able Seaman (Cable) who stand two twelve hour watches during operations. Additionally, two Deck Engineer Machinists and two Unlicensed Jr. Engineers are responsible for operating and maintaining cable equipment. Crew accommodations include single staterooms, three lounges, a gymnasium, a recreation room, and a library. Since USNS ZEUS was delivered to MSC in 1984, she has established an excellent reputation for service and reliability.
