Seaford for Ukraine

As many of you will be aware, a few weeks ago a group drawn from members of local churches, councillors and voluntary organisations was set up to actively welcome people from Ukraine who are seeking sanctuary in our community.

You may have attended one of the many fundraising events which have taken place and continue to do so for which we thank you. At the time of writing here are some of the things we’ve been doing:

l Holding a weekly Zoom meeting with all the hosts, listening, peer supporting and responding to emergent needs. Every Friday at 6pm – new hosts can email us for Zoom link. l Working closely with existing Ukrainian Seafordians to make sure we offer the appropriate welcome and hospitality. This includes an orientation meeting, in

Ukrainian, for guests on arrival. l A daily UKR Community Café has been launched, now providing a social space for Ukrainian guests to meet one another, speak in their own language and share information and experiences. l 3 months’ provision of TEFL/ESL Language classes ready to be launched through the voluntary efforts of a team of professional teachers and the provision of space at St Peter’s Church. Wednesday at the UKR café offers an informal ‘assessment’ and signposting. We are happy, potentially, to welcome a limited number of students from other areas. l A pathway for accessing formal education and employment with a partnership through ESCC and partners will be offered through a local drop-in at the community café for Ukraine displaced persons. l Local grants are being awarded for the purchase of necessary items, provision of essentials, and help with getting on feet. Facilitation of other material support also mediated (including a car, beds, a violin, toys, bedding etc). l Over £5,000 raised so far through local giving. Thank you to the many societies, clubs, concerts, bucket collections that have achieved this. l Transport provided to help guests reach Seaford. l Support on arrival with accessing services, information and support. l Flagging up system issues directly with council leaders and our MP Maria Caulfield.

All of this is possible because of the partnership approach that we have formed and the goodwill of so many who live in Seaford. This is Seaford at its best. Our formal S4U Facebook Page has now been set up and can be found at www.facebook.com/ seaford4ukraine
