YOUR SHOUT

Ex-pat Ian with his Lotus Europa.

Quick posts

A question of Standards My thanks to you and your team for all the effort you put into trying to save the Standard Ten being traded in under Ford’s scrappage scheme up here in Scotland. I drove to Thurso to meet PC assistant editor James Walshe and was able to see what was going on at your HQ. The phone calls and emails firing back and forth was incredible. You did not accept Ford’s ‘NO’ as an answer and just kept going! It is possible that ‘Bluebell’ might have to

as an exhibit and will not be driven. Even so, this could not have been achieved without you. The car we were trying to save was not a scrapper. I wonder what the fate of my own van or pick-up might have been if scrappage had been around 20 years ago? In fact, ‘Bluebell’ is in better nick than my pickup is now! Bob Alexander, Standard Motor Club

Ever seen an XJ220 up close? I built and tested the instrument binnacles for the production XJ220. Each one was individually calibrated up to 220mph on a cobbled together test rig using a Psion organiser (remember them?) Beneath the nice blue electroluminescent display lies a Ford Granada speedo mechanism! Bryan Barker

A EUROPA IN CANADA I have just read your Lotus bookazine. I moved to Canada from the UK in 1967 and while in Toronto I visited a Lotus dealer. I had been looking at buying a Chevrolet Z28 Camaro but the Lotus vibe dragged me into the showroom. After one short test drive, my old Mini was history and I was suddenly the proud owner of a 1969 Series II Lotus Europa. I ended up putting on 2000 miles before its first service! It was a daily driver for eight years, during which we enjoyed both hot prairie summers and cold northern Canadian winters. The little blue car was the most welcome vehicle at any beach party! Ian Simpson, Alberta

ED: Thanks to you as well, Bob, and the club. We ased to veryday e club e Ten e wonder hat the uture will ring?

My favourite car of all time. It just oozed class and poise and it’s still on my lottery win shopping list! Allan Mawson I used to know a bloke in Gloucester who owned one. He was the landlord of quite a few local residential properties. Martin Fletcher I recall reading one of my dad’s car magazines around release time (possibly Auto Express), with an article on a journalist taking one out on a track and blowing up the engine after going up to 90mph in first gear.

TESTING TIMES – EVEN FOR MODERNS Being an MoT tester, I can say that even modern drivers can let their cars become dangerous. It would seem mechanical sympathy is a thing of the past. Dangerous faults can develop quickly and if the driver doesn’t notice, it will only get worse, not better.

I am talking about eggshaped tyres, worn pads and discs, all in cars fitted with child seats. Once a year these things can be spotted during a test but some responsibility must be on the driver’s shoulders. Robert Mabon, York
