Unsure what the Samford Edible Garden Trail (SEGT) is all about, or new to Samford? If you answered ‘Yes’, here’s a quick overview of what the Trail entails, so you can start preparing for our wonderful weekend on 18 & 19 May! Tickets will be available very soon.

The SEGT came to fruition in 2020 and has been running annually since – making this our 5th year – drawing in locals and visitors from all over Australia. Costa Georgiadis has been a regular at our Trails to date, getting right behind our focus on:

• Inspiring people to grow their own food by sharing local food-growing stories and experiences;

• Encouraging people to buy food more locally and support sustainable and small-scale local food chains; and

• Building relationships between people involved in local food systems to help build a more resilient community (eg local growers, educators, businesses, consumers).

But this vibrant initiative wouldn’t be possible without the support of Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank. Thanks to their sponsorship again this year, the SEGT is more than a weekend event; it’s a thriving year-round movement that encourages healthy living, environmental responsibility, and a sense of connection among people.

Critical are the many volunteers who give their time and energy to ensure its success, with money generated by ticket sales used to support local initiatives that share our focus.

Would you like to meet others and have a fun while helping on the Trail? We need wonderful helpers stationed at the entrance of each garden to welcome visitors with a smile, check tickets, and point people in

the right direction. You can select either a morning or afternoon shift, and it comes with the benefit of a FREE Trail ticket so you can spend the rest of the weekend visiting the gardens.

Or maybe you want to contribute in another way? We would be happy to hear your idea and explore options. Get in touch at samfordegt@gmail.com or send us a message through Facebook by searching for Samford Edible Garden Trail.

The Samford Edible Garden Trail is a project of the SDPPA.

E-LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The last edition of The Village Pump, Allambi Retreat koala reserve have said that they have received grants from community funding which is great, but what they have forgotten to say is, they want to turn this into a businesses and with no consultation with neighbouring properties.

The owners of the Allambi Retreat intend to hold wedding and corporate group functions, large and small, also parties and camping.

The residents that live in the area of 245 Cedar Creek Road are outraged that this could happen in our peaceful part of Cedar Creek. This will affect everyone and set a precedent for others.

DIVISION 11 COUNCIL REPORT

Fire Ants - Be On the Look Out

Fire ants are a dangerous pest that have been imported into Australia and can severely damage our environment, agriculture and tourism industries, as well as the outdoor lifestyle that we enjoy in the City of Moreton Bay. There are Fire Ant Biosecurity Zones in Queensland that align with the Interstate Plant Quarantine zones. These are reviewed monthly and updated based on the detection of fire ants.

There are quite a number of materials

that may carry fire ants, so if you deal with these materials some of which include soil, animal manure, hay, straw, sugarcane, turf, quarry products or potted plants - and move them, then you must be aware of the biosecurity zones and follow general biosecurity obligations.

Fire ants have been detected within the Moreton Bay region which means it is very important that we all be on the lookout. They present as dome-shaped mounds, flat mounds or small patches of disturbed soil which would be found in open areas. For more information on what to look for, you can go to fireants.org.au. If you suspect that you have seen fire ants, it is important that you report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

Check Current Projects

Council has an app called ‘My Street’ that allows you to search and view current projects. You can search an address in the app for projects or maintenance works for parks, roads, recreation areas and drainage. The scope of works and photos are available for Council projects.

Scan the QR code or go to Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld. gov.au and search ‘My Street’. It is a great tool to keep up to date on projects in your area or across the region.

What Does Driving for the Samford Support Network Mean?

Our motto is Community Supporting Community and volunteering as a driver for the Samford Support Network is a rewarding and fun experience, where you get to meet and engage with our clientswho are your neighbours in the Samford and surrounds community.I would like to explain how our system works.

If you have a car, an open licence, fully comprehensive insurance and have even a few spare hours a month, you are our ideal candidate! If not yourself, perhaps a friend, family member or neighbour might be interested? Remember, you volunteer your free time only if and when it suits you – flexibility is the key.

We arrange three types of drives for our clients - shopping and social outing drives, and medical appointments.

Shopping and social outing drives have a pool of regular volunteers who are rostered to drive on dates of their choosing.

For each medical appointment, I email the specific details to all our drivers and if a driver is free on that day and time, they reply accepting the drive. That driver then receives paperwork with all the relevant information, including the small cost to the client for the return trip. We rely totally on the generosity of local benefactors to enable this heavily subsidised service.

We do reimburse our drivers for their mileage if they wish, and processing each drive’s paperwork is simple and painless.

We hope this encourages many Samford and surrounds residents with some spare time to become drivers for us and help support our community. Our volunteers are

from all walks of life, and we have regular friendly get-togethers over morning tea, forming lifelong friendships.

If you would like to become a driver, or for more information on other roles, please email us at secretary@ samfordsupporknetwork.com

Movie Night Raises Community Funds

Showcasing its first P&C event for the year to help others in the community, Samford State School held a movie night at the start of March, raising funds to support the Samford Bowls Club which sustained significant damage during recent storms.

Sponsored by a City of Moreton Bay Council grant, the movie night originated as an opportunity for the school community to come together at the start of the year, and to allow new families to meet others at the school.

After seeing the recent flooding devastation heaped on the Samford Bowls Club, the school P&C were keen to lend their support, asking families for a donation upon entry with all proceeds going to the Club.

“There is a great community spirit at Samford State School, and we thought it would be a wonderful idea to use this first school community event to raise awareness and funds for another community group that suffered so much loss in the January storm,” Samford State School P&C President, Jo Harris, said.

“We have parents and past-parents who are members of the Bowls Club, and it’s also important for younger people in our community to help others who have lived here for many years. So often it’s the other way around, so this is a chance for us to give back where we can.”

Food trucks were on hand during the night to keep kids full while they went on a wild ride through The Super Mario Brothers Movie.

JENNI GUSE: The Quiet Activist

‘We live our life. We do our best. We put one foot in front of the other. We try to be kind. That’s about it, really.’

As she plays her guitar gently to the Friday afternoon folk gathered at the SCHUB after leading a lively Good Stuff Ideas Forum, you would never guess Jenni Guse was an innovative campaigner, determined to change how education is delivered, to prove that modern life can be sustainable and to encourage positive thinking to cope with life’s unexpected challenges and tragedies.

Brisbane born Jenni grew up in a strict conservative home where family was the loving centre of life, helping the community was vital and advocating strongly for what you believed in was a generational law. Kindness and consideration of others is in her DNA as is her healing music.

In her early teaching career in Mt Isa, Jenni and two other crusaders turned the “one size fits all” model of education, common in schools in the ‘70s, upside down, to introduce programs targeted at each child’s needs. After her marriage in the Isa and the birth of her two children, Jenni studied linguistics, collaborating with Dr Penny McKay, one of the leading lights of English as a Second Language education, to transform the way second language speakers were taught and assessed. Jenni moved from the secondary sector to lecturing at Queensland University of Technology. In

her spare time, while raising her young family, she wrote and co-authored four texts for ESL teaching.

In about 2015, Jenni and her husband bought a two-bedroomed shack on overgrazed land in Samford Valley. Passionate about their commitment to recycling, rejuvenating the land and sustainability, they gutted and renovated the house and used good farming practice to create a place which provides most of their nutritional needs. That Jenni is an expert cook helped.

Driven by the need to educate many in the community about the better nutritional and economic value of local produce, Jenni became a founding member of Millen Farm, a partner of Samford Commons, which planned to establish a model of innovative sustainable living, learning, working and playing in our district. As chair of the education team and then the board of Millen Farm, Jenni was proactive in supporting Samford’s own ecologically sustainable urban farm. Workshops and other educational experiences helped local landowners explore a range of organic agricultural opportunities.

In August 2017, unimaginable tragedy threatened to break Jenni’s long-held beliefs and her family. She struggled to rebuild her iron inner-strength for herself foremost, so that she could support her fragile family. Sharing glimmers of hope on Radio National, she recounted a beautiful and powerful episode of family healing.

She has written inspirational cameos of the positive experiences she has had in her family’s almost unbearable struggle to overcome trauma.

It’s a slow process and it’s not over — never will be. But finding the light in the darkness has been restorative. Now Jenni is a feisty yet gentle advocate for the protection and rehabilitation of domestic violence victims, she promotes good mental health and she supports the right for the aged to remain independent for as long as they want to, as she provides support for her 95 year-old father. She says the gift of belonging to a resilient and solid, loving, committed caring family is her greatest blessing.

Successful Flood Appeal

On Friday evening 1st March, families and friends rolled up for the School P & C’s first ever Movie Night on the main school oval. Popcorn, hot dogs and chips plus warm beverages kept mums, dads and students occupied while the big screen, with stereo sound, showed Mario Bros in full colour.

Our thanks to the P&C President Jo Harris and committee for their kind gesture in offering assistance to raise funds via a gold coin donation towards the flood damage at the our club on 30th January 2024.

“We would also like to acknowledge Principal Nicole Collins and Deputy Principal John Mauch who encouraged students, mums, dads and children to support the appeal which raised $337.00.

A sincere thank you from all members for your generous donation. It will be put to good use,” said Barry Maher, Chairperson.

DIY Easter Eggs

The shops may be awash with ovoidshaped shiny foil in an assortment of colours, but there is a limit to how many chocolate Easter Eggs you can let into the house without going into a sugar high that lasts until Christmas.

For anyone looking for a sweet alternative, this year could crack open a new tradition with the kids, which can invoke their creativity, put them in touch with history and increase their protein. Apart from food dye on your kitchen walls, this is a win-winwin scenario.

The ancient tradition of colouring real eggs goes back to early Christians in Mesopotamia, who dyed eggs in the days after Easter. Orthodox Churches then adopted the idea, and from there the tradition travelled to Western Europe.

Eggs represent new life and rebirth, making this ancient custom fit nicely with celebrating Easter.

To start making your own colourful eggs, it’s best to find eggs with white shells to produce more vivid results, but any eggs will work.

For best results, using food dye works a treat and gives an assortment of colours to rival any rainbow.

METHOD

1. Place paper towels or newspaper on your work bench to protect it from turning a lovely new shade of bright red.

2. Hard boil your eggs and let them cool completely.

3. Boil extra water to use for your egg dye. You’ll need 1 cup of water for each colour you’re making.

EASTER ACTIVITY

4. Mix 1 teaspoon of vinegar, 20 drops of food colouring with 1 cup of boiling hot water in a heatproof bowl, or jar that’s deep enough to submerge your egg completely. You can use more food colouring to intensify the colour.

5. Using tongs, submerge your egg into the dye mixture.

6. The egg can sit for anywhere from 30 seconds for pastel tones, to up to 15 minutes for more saturated tints.

7. Using tongs again, remove the eggs from the dye and allow them to air dry.

How to avoid property investment failure

There is an old saying that no investment is as safe as a bricks and mortar investment, but is that really the case or is it something that we just like to believe, spurred on by what appears to be the never-ending increase in property prices?

While it’s easy to think investing in residential property is a fail-safe way to make money, there are endless traps for anyone hoping to get rich quick by buying into property.

Most economists believe the steady price rise in Australian housing during the past two decades is due only to two factors.

The first is the deregulation of the Australian banking sector which has allowed more banks to lend more money to more Australians to buy a house.

At the same time, interest rates have been at historically low levels and these two factors combined, has meant that come auction day, Australians have just been able to offer more for houses that are up from sale.

However, this apparent endless price rise, has given Australians an incorrect belief that it is impossible to go wrong investing in residential property.

So, what are the key mistakes investors make when investing in property?

1. One + One = Two

The most common mistake is potential investors simply don’t do the numbers before they buy. They assume that even if you lose money on a month to month basis, the eventual capital gains will easily offset this loss. Maybe that will happen, but what if it doesn’t?

How much money will you lose if the rent doesn’t cover the outgoings on the property while you own it? And how much capital growth do you need to achieve after tax to make a profit?

2. Did you ask your accountant?

It’s also imperative to get good advice from the outset. If you are investing in property to minimise your overall tax bill, then its important you have a tax agent walk you through the key numbers.

If you are simply trying to minimise your tax bill, you might consider buying a new house or apartment, where you can potentially claim a raft of non-cash depreciation charges, which in turn may significantly boost your tax deductions, and with it, the likely financial success of the investment.

3. Do you need that much?

It’s easy to get carried away and borrow more money than you can comfortably afford. You might start off by thinking you are happy with a tax loss of say $200 a week but could find that as the years drag on you are less happy dealing with this cash shortfall.

4. Interest Rates

Decades of historically low interest rates have left many Australians with the false belief that interest rates will always stay low. As we have witnessed in recent times, interest rates can rise at any time given the economic environment. Can you cover larger repayments if rates do rise?

8. Display or enjoy cracking open your eggcellent craft project.

If you have a crack at making these eggs, upload a photo onto Facebook or Instagram and tag @ TheVillagePumpSamford for us to spread your Easter craftiness with the wider community.

5. Research, Research, Research

Finally, too many would-be property investors fail to properly understand the property market or suburb they are buying into. This can lead to either paying too much for a property or spending too much money on renovations and over-capitalising.

Over-capitalising refers to a situation where a property owner may spend $100,000 improving a property by undertaking renovations or landscaping only to find when it comes time to sell that they have only added $50,000 to the final price buyers are prepared to spend on a property in that area.

Since the 1990’s, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there have been five periods where the growth in house prices has been negative, falling by as much as 10 per cent on average compared to the previous year.

There is risk in any investment, including in property investments, as much as many don’t want to believe that. The best protection is to seek quality advice before you buy a property and determine whether buying really makes sense after you’ve covered all expenses and taxes.

CAN YOU HELP?

A local artists’ collective has initiated a fundraiser to assist Stella and Jon, residents of Highvale, who are currently facing significant challenges and could benefit from the support of their community. Jon Linkins and Stella Danalis, known within the local art community through Creative Samford, operate Printroom Editions, a reputable artphotography business, alongside Stella’s graphic design venture. Despite their commendable professionalism, managing their businesses has become increasingly daunting due to Jon’s long-standing health issues, which have necessitated frequent medical interventions.

Jon, a resilient individual supported by Stella’s unwavering care, has endured forty years of health struggles following a kidney transplant. Recently, he underwent major surgery for cancer, adding another layer of complexity to their already demanding circumstances. Recognising the importance of communal aid during such trying times, the artists’ group seeks to rally support for the couple.

The community has already shown its generosity through various gestures, including providing meals, massages, and vouchers for local products. To further assist Jon and Stella, a community cook-up is

being organised on 9 April at 7pm at Yugar, with fresh produce generously contributed by local not-for-profit groups – Samford Edible Exchange, Mini Farm Project and Green Thumb Farm. If you would like to be involved, please contact Wendy on 0409 643 220 or Lucie 0427 374 712.

For those interested in contributing financially, a fundraising page has been established under the title ‘Help Jon and Stella get through upcoming treatment.’ Even a modest donation, equivalent to the cost of a cup of coffee, can make a meaningful difference. https://gofund. me/13ab71a4

Your support, whether through participation in community events or financial contributions, will undoubtedly bolster Jon and Stella’s spirits and remind them that they are not alone in their struggles. Together, as a compassionate community, we can make a significant impact in their lives.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

ANZAC DAY AT THE SAMFORD MUSEUM

You are all invited to visit the Samford Historical Museum on ANZAC day -25 April. All displays will be open, giving you time to

explore what we have to offer. Especially at this time of the year, there is our War Memories building, formerly Grovely Railway Station, displaying memorabilia and remembrances from our conflicts, and our magnificent Charge of the Beersheba Mount.

Along with the sausage sizzle, pie with mushy peas, and homemade Anzac biscuits, (gluten free as well), all will go together with a cuppa tea, coffee, soft drink and water. On the menu this year is pea and ham soup. Not to be forgotten is the very popular - freshly made on the spot - damper with syrup and a great cup of boiled billy tea.

Our eager craft lady will be in the slab kitchen, either crocheting, knitting and certainly chatting. Our WW1/WW2 person is willing to answer any questions you may have, and give you direction on your family history.

The museum’s historian is very knowledgeable and accommodating regarding local history. The children and adults will enjoy what the treasure hunt lady has to offer. The Blacksmith will be demonstrating his skills, and the restored engines will be making their presence felt.

The museum will have books for sale which includes local authors as well as our Reminiscence collection. If you are a history buff, perhaps local or outside the valley, you will thoroughly enjoy the stories and topics of times past.

We have an amazing group of volunteers, each with different skills and knowledge, who dedicate their time and energy, ensuring our displays and future donations are proudly maintained and exhibited. New volunteers are always welcomed. Feel free to find out more information by speaking to our President, Mike on the day.

FRIDAY’S AT THE SCHUB

Feeling Better

Creativity is a basic human response to trauma, a natural emergency defence system for the inner self. Many studies have shown that involvement in arts and crafts, whether through painting, writing, sewing, sculpting, crocheting, woodworking, knitting, performing - helps people find a path forward by reducing stress, anxiety and depression, giving greater focus and clarity. Studies also show that when we help others, we feel better about ourselves. If we connect with others, talk about our problems, and seek the positives in life’s challenges, we become stronger in ourselves.

The basic premises behind Friday at the SCHUB is to find like souls to talk to, to focus on life’s good things, to keep our bodies working, and to help others with our creations. Each week of the month focuses on a different aspect of making ourselves feel better. Every week, regardless of what

else is happening, our informal open house Cuppa and Chat starts at 2pm. The cost each week is $2.

JUST IN CASE

Most people who live, work, play in and visit Samford have a good feeling about the place. It looks good, feels good, is good. Is good for the connection with nature and good for building a sense of environmental positivity. So, there’s a human case for creating and maintaining a sustainable environment in Samford. There’s also a business imperative and whole-ofcommunity imperative driving businesses and community organisations to be more eco-efficient and sustainable.

The Samford Progress and Protection Association (SDPPA) grew out of a need to protect our environment and now oversees a Sustainable Samford sub-committee. Similarly, the Samford Sustainable Business Network grew out of the Samford Green Street project that kicked off in 2011. Now, individual businesses take actions to improve the environmental, social and economic outcomes of their business and the community.

Why is this so? How does the business case for sustainability merge with the community case for sustainability?

• Increasing consumer demand for sustainable products and services builds a circular process of demand and supply.

• Customer and staff loyalty and satisfaction increases when

organisations follow ethical practices.

• Environmentally conscious businesses are more competitive, as sustainability criteria impacts purchasing decisions.

• Streamlining operational practices uses resources efficiently, cuts costs, increases profits and improves service.

• Many managers of businesses and community organisations want to leave a positive environmental legacy for generations to come.

However, sustainable business is not an end in itself. As we know, business is ultimately a social and economic function. Businesses and their communities, including ours, keep asking themselves how to create a future that is aspirational, equitable, safe, prosperous and resilient.

It seems the best businesses within the best communities within the best regions (like ours!) are those that have a great sense of inter-dependence. That’s where there is community collaboration, sharing of ideas and resources for the common good, and innovation at a group or local level.

These tactics help sustainable businesses to thrive, because with every consumer transaction there is a shared awareness of the flow-on effects, and a clearer sense of purpose. There has been evidence of this in Samford for quite a while. But can we do more?

Such thoughts inspire the Samford Sustainable Business Network and many of the groups we connect with. If you’d like to join the Network, go to www.greenstreet. net.au (base membership is free) or call 0407 190 162. To find out about the Sustainable Samford sub-committee, come to the next

Who’s Who @ SAMS Meet Rob!

Rob’s insatiable need to legally exceed the speed limit was first realised back in ’78 when he joined the Metro Fire Service as a Fireman on probation. It took ages before his moment finally came, when he and his son fluked hard-to-get VIP passenger seats in a racing car on the infamous Indianapolis 500 track, only to be speed limited at the last minute to a less than thrilling 300 kilometres an hour! Hardly seemed worth it really. For the next 25 years he volunteered as a Fire & Rescue Marshal at motor races all over the South East, just so he could rub shoulders with celebrity drivers like Mario Andretti to exchange tips and compare notes.

With a no-nonsense career under his belt as a welder, boiler maker and running a marketing business in health products, you can probably understand how he ended up working at Woodford’s high security prison centre for ten years, as a Correctional

Officer. In recognition of his valued contribution to front line organisations, he has found himself on the receiving end of the National Medal for 15 and 25 years’ service across both the Fire Brigade and Corrective Services.

Meanwhile, his skill at sticking up his arm at auctions year after year has filled his home workshop with all manner of bargain

priced goodies and weird things purposely left on trains, whilst also supplying his family with enough unwanted cars to form a racing team of his own one day.

Speaking of his family, they moved from Alderley to Ferny Hills, then settled in Samford, and have been a bunch of thankful Samfordites for almost 30 years. Now in retirement, he’s become a proud grandparent along with his lovely wife. Of course, he dearly misses the responsibility and adrenaline rush that come with clanging the fire truck bell and making siren noises through amped-up megaphones. Luckily, he more than makes up for it though, by chauffeuring the grandkids to the shops or the park while in his head reliving his glorious hamstrung appearance at Indianapolis. Onya, Granddad!

Why not visit SAMS’ website samfordshed. org.au, drop an enquiry to samssecretary1@ gmail.com, or see us at 38 Showgrounds Drive, Highvale, next to the Showgrounds entrance, and corner Rob if you can catch him.

Easter fast approaches. It seems like it’s been coming forever. “Easter Buns” have been on sale since Boxing Day. I wonder how fresh they’ll be by Good Friday, the traditional day for consuming Hot Cross Buns. I have to admit that they are nice and it takes a little discipline to wait. My preference is the traditional recipe, and I’ve had a few goes at making my own. Some efforts have been more successful than others.

Different days in the calendar have brought with them foods that remain associated with those days. Easter eggs on Easter Day, Fruit mince tarts on Christmas day, pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and Hot cross Buns on Good Friday. Last week we shared Simnel Cake on the day that has had several names over the years. The fourth Sunday in Lent has been known as Mothering Sunday, Refreshment Sunday or even Laetare Sunday (Latin for “rejoice”). It is also the day that the UK keep Mother’s Day. Australia follows the American date for Mother’s Day for some reason. All of these practices come to us from antiquity.

This year, as has been said before, we celebrate 100 years of Anglican worship in Samford. On 31 August 1924, the first Anglican church was opened in Samford. This building is our current Hall. The current church was built in 1902 and was located in Alderley but was moved to Samford in 1988. On Sunday 25 August we will be joined by Archbishop Jeremy Greaves for a service of celebration to mark the opening of our first church in the valley. It will be preceded by a High Tea on the 24 August and a “Back to 1924” Day in June. Keep your ear to the ground for more details as these draw closer.

Regular Sunday Services: 7:30am and 9am. Motorcycle ride group gathers at The Long Yard Larder on the first Saturday of the month for an 8:30am or 9am departure. Destinations vary and riders of all experience levels are welcome.

SPYs – St Paul’s Youth: 3rd Friday of the month, 6pm-9pm for an evening which always includes food and a craft activity. Samford Valley Markets: 2nd Saturday of the month, 7am – Midday.

All Things Nice: Mondays, 9am – midday, Parish Hall

JANE AUSTEN DANCE

National Heritage Festival

Presented by Samford Community Folk Dancers with awesome live music by Phillip’s Dog.

The theme for the 2024 National Heritage Festival is Connections: celebrating the rich and diverse stories of our nation, strengthening cultural and historical ties, and encouraging the community to forge new bonds.

Dance has a remarkable ability to bridge the gap between history, culture, our ancestors, and the present. There is a certain magic in experiencing the dances that were once an integral part of our forebears’ social lives and were cherished during celebrations.

Dance not only preserves the stories of our past but also enables us to forge a connection with these narratives in the present. It offers a unique perspective on the significance of our cultural heritage both in the past and in the modern day.

Jane Austen was writing her novels at the time the early colony in Australia was being settled. She loved dancing and included many dance scenes in her books, emphasising its significance in social life. Interestingly, the same dances that Jane was familiar with were also enjoyed in various settings in the colony - in grand residences, taverns and private homes.

It is even speculated that D’Arcy Wentworth, a prominent figure in colonial society, may have served as the inspiration for Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. If you want to learn more about this intriguing connection, join us for a night of exploration! Additionally, it is worth noting that even in the Penal Settlement at Moreton Bay,

which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, an educated convict named John Bushel taught dancing to the officers and their families.

Come and be a part of this special night where you can experience our rich cultural traditions firsthand. All dances taught on the night, no experience or partner necessary. Costumes admired but not required.

When: 26 April

Time: 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Where: The Hills District Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills Cost: $4.00 includes tea & cake.

Proudly supported by City of Moreton Bay Healthy & Active Program.

For information about this and all our dances visit www.historicaldance.au, or call 0422 067 392.

Growing Good at Green Thumb Farm!

We may have only been opened since February, but we have really hit the ground running! On 17th March we opened the Farm to the public as part of the first ever Moreton Bay Farm Trail - and it was a blast! We have visitors from all over SEQ drop in to see what we’ve been creating here in Samford.

Kids enjoyed learning to make their own seed packets and fill them with our farm grown sunflower seeds, while adults enjoyed a coffee and a treat. We launched our Pop Up Edible Nursery - and it was a huge hit! Our goal is to offer the same local seeds and seedlings that we grow at the Farm - in season - to our local community so that you can have success growing at home.

Let us clean up the mud for you with our Holiday Green Thumb Program!

Looking for an enriching and fun-filled holiday activity for your children aged 5-12? Look no further than our Holiday Green Thumb Program, running from 9am - 11.30am in the first week of the Easter School holidays. This is a unique blend of outdoor gardening activities at our community farm and nature-inspired arts and crafts, promising an unforgettable experience for your little ones.

Activities include: Making a Nature Elf Mask, Botanical Drawing, Nature Weaving, Pressed Clay Bowls, Clay Portraits, Autumn Wreath Collage and making a Frida Kahlo Nature Collage.

Don’t wait too long to book! Word is getting out about our programs with the last two booking out. All the info you need is at greenthumbfarm.org.au

Make sure to add your name to our mailing list so you don’t miss out on our next kids activities, Pop Up Nursery, and next workshops, including Edible Weeds & Basket Weaving!

RECORDS FALL AT RANGERS!!

It has been a busy start to the year getting the 2024 season up and running. Our FQ Academy Junior teams started fixtures in early February, so are well into their season already. Our Masters, Community seniors and juniors started in early March, as did our FQPL2 Men. The season started for our FQPL2 Women on Sunday 17th March.

Our Miniroos teams have all started training and their season will commence after the Easter break on 20th April. Miniroos Kick Off for the 3-5 year olds will start on Sunday 21st April.

2024 is a record year for Rangers, with the club reaching 900 registered players. Excitingly, we have had big growth in girls playing football. This year we will field girls’ teams in U8, U9 (2 teams), U10, U11, U12 (2 teams), U13, U15 and U17. In addition, there are Under 23 and Senior Women in the FQPL2 Women’s competition and the Wranglers in the over 30’s competition.

FQPL2 Men

Round 1 saw the men have a narrow 1-2 loss to North Star at home. Round 2 was a win away to Maroochydore 2-1. Next, they are away to Taringa Rovers, followed by a home game on Saturday 23rd March to coincide with the club season opening.

FQPL2 Women

Our women were promoted from the FQPL3 competition last year and are excited for the challenge ahead this year. They kicked off the season on Sunday 17th March, away to UQ. They have just completed the Kappa Pro Series, where they defeated fellow FQPL2 team UQ 3-2, lost 2-4 to SWQ Thunder (FQPL1) and drew with local neighbours Moreton City Excelsior (FQPL1) 1-1.

FQ Academy

Our Under 13 to Under 18 FQ Academy juniors are well into their season, having started in the first week of February. The last set of home games against Brighton Bulldogs was a big night, with our U13’s winning 6-0, U14 11-1, U15 10-0, U16 5-0 and the Under 18’s went down 0-1.

Community Juniors

This year we are fielding 3 Under 13 teams, 2 x Under 14 teams, 2 x Under 15 teams, 1 x U17 Girls team and an Under 18 team, including girls teams in the Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 17.

Community Senior

This year we are fielding 3 Men’s teams in Metro 1, Metro 5 North and Metro 7 North.

Masters

This year we are fielding 7 Masters teams. The Old Boys, Hillbillies, Outlaws, Mountain Men, Renegades, Thunderbolts and the Wranglers.

2024 Season Launch

Our Launch Day is on Saturday 23rd March with formal activities getting underway from 4pm.

We will have a bouncy castle, an inflatable football pitch, you can test your kicking prowess with our speed gun. There will also be football merchandise to buy, food trucks will be in attendance and our canteen will be open. Not forgetting the abundance of great football games to watch, both Juniors and Seniors - with a few Miniroos games thrown in as well. Games start at 1pm if you want to come down earlier.

THE LANTANA DILEMMA

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 2 April, in the CWA Hall, Main St, Samford, 6:45pm for a 7:00 pm start.

Unfortunately, our planned speaker had to pull out at the last minute due to personal reasons. Peter Storer has kindly agreed to step in and will give a presentation titled The Lantana Dilemma. Lantana is one of Queensland’s most hated weeds, yet it provides a valuable habitat for native birds, insects and mammals. Peter will explain how lantana can be removed but needs to be replaced with a suite of native plants that provide nectar, shelter and fruit. Come along and learn how to deal with this noxious weed safely, to maintain secure habitats for the many native creatures that would otherwise be lost.

Visitors are welcome, and all are encouraged to come with native plants or weeds labelled for our “show and tell” activity. We recommend you bring a small amount of cash for our raffle drawn after the presentations during refreshment time.

At our March meeting, one of the prizes, kindly supplied by Russell Young, was the endangered small-leaved Tamarind tree, Diploglottis campbellii, a productive bush tucker plant from this subtropical area.

Native Plant Sale Reminder

Come to our annual Native Plants market at the Samford Showgrounds on Saturday 23 March, where you will find a vast range of rare and desirable specimens at attractive prices. It opens at 9am at the Samford Showgrounds, and NPQ Samford Branch plants will be located at Grower No 10 stall. Last year, they sold out early! Check the list of plants for sale at https://npq.org.au/ plants-markets/. You will be able to ask for expert advice.

Our plant propagation group has been working hard to prepare for the additional demands of the fire-ant precautions about moving plants and soil, with which we must comply.

After seventeen years as Publicity Officer and author of these Village Pump articles for our NPQ Samford group, formerly SGAP Samford, Peter Storer is reducing his active positions in NPQ. Last June, he was awarded Life Membership of Native Plants Queensland for his contributions, as reported in the NPQ article in the Village Pump on 23 June 2023 and by Julie Martin in her article, “Peter the Re-Storer” in the Village Pump 01 September 2023. I am excited about my new role and welcome comments and suggestions.

At the Wynnum Zone 1 Show jumping, Caitlin, Chloe, Ella, Frankie and Charlie all came home with amazing results and Ella in the 12yrs and under, took home the 70cm win.

Maiya headed to Tambourine Pony Club also in March and placed in both the Equitation and Show jumping. Congratulations all riders. Next Muster 8am 14th April.

‘Topspin’

The end of February saw the conclusion of the 2023 fixtures finals, with the completion of the Open Teams final after several wet weather delays.

Play commenced on a delayed start date of 7 February. Finalists Tom Murphy and Mike Cordery started strongly and were up 4 games to 2 before rain interrupted play

yet again. The eventual resumption of play, on 28 February, saw the momentum switch, with Nathan Belling and John Percival taking out all sets.

Congratulations and thanks to all fixtures players for 2023.

2023 FIXTURES CHAMPIONS

• Mens’ singles champions: Johan Van Andel (1st); Michael Legget (2nd)

• Womens’ doubles champions: Wendy Watson (1st); Megan Chapman (2nd)

• Open teams’ champions: John Percival & Nathan Belling (1st); Tom Murphy & Mike Cordery (2nd)

This year, the Club is hoping to re-instate a regular mixed doubles fixtures evening, alongside the Womens’ doubles on Thursday nights.

While a critical mass of regular players is necessary, regular fixtures may be feasible with enough regular and casual players combined. The Club would like to hear from all those who may be interested. If you would like to join in this very enjoyable form of the game, please contact Michael Barr (Head Coach & Fixtures Coordinator) on 0409 900 756.

The Club witnessed some of the best young players in Australia, when it recently hosted the Tennis Australia Junior Tour, girls’ singles. The Junior Tour is the national

competition for top young players.

More than 60 players participated from Queensland and interstate, including 11 from the STC.

Competition is at elite level, so participation in this event is an achievement of itself. The Club congratulates junior Club members Iris O’Donnell, Amelia Lorenzo and Emily Pedersen on their exceptional recent success in the Junior Tour and other elite events:

• Iris O’Donnell - champion u/12 Jr Tour girls singles at University of Queensland, 1 December 2023 and also the u/12 KDV Jr Sport Slam on 1 February this year;

• Amelia Lorenzo - champion, u/16 girls singles Conso, 17 December 2023; and

• Emily Pedersen – runner up, u/14 Samford girls Jr Tour, 3 March 2024. The Club is immensely proud of all its junior members.

“A crocodile came to Kindy today, Mummy!”

A highlight on the Kindy calendar is the Geckoes Wildlife incursion, where the children have the opportunity to get up close to a selection of furry, scaly and feathered creatures. Read on to find out about some of the animals we met and what we learnt about them!

Mrs Sticky is a stick insect. Stick insects have a skeleton on the outside of their bodies and even though she looks spiky, she is soft to touch!

Donatello the turtle has a hard shell and webbed feet. When the turtle was held in the air it thought it was swimming and moved its legs. We had to watch out for its claws when giving it a pat under the chin or on its shell.

Bluey the Blue tongue lizard is a reptile. Reptiles use the warmth of the sun to get energy to move. Blue tongue lizards have live babies - they don’t lay eggs like most reptiles do. Bluey likes to eat snails and fruit.

Spot the python is a slithery snake. This reptile is covered in scales and felt soft and squishy to touch. The children learnt that if they see a snake, they should walk away slowly and tell an adult.

Salty the saltwater crocodile eats turtles and crabs and lives in saltwater wetlands with mangroves. This baby croc will grow up to 8 metres long. Each child had the opportunity to pat this incredible reptile!

This well-loved experience fosters respectful relationships towards the environment and its many amazing creatures.

Looking for your next bookclub choice? Something that is not only well written and a great story but has heaps of things to discuss hidden within its depths? Look no further than these two recent Australian books.

All the Words We Know

What a refreshing work of genius this book is. A first person narrative from someone with dementia that is so revelatory about the world we live in. Eighty year old Rose lives in a nursing home and is trying to find out why her friend fell from her balcony. While she searches for clues she finds other strange things are also happening in the home. But is this just her dementia and a series of misunderstandings? Through Rose’s confusion, brilliant word play and searing simplicity, complicated layers are stripped back to show us the world and our place in it. Rose is funny, wise, compassionate and curious. It was a pure delight to spend time with her.

Cool Water

This latest novel by the Miles Franklin short-listed author takes us to Tinaroo Falls in North Queensland and moves between its heyday with the building of the dam in the 1950s and the present day where the Herbert family are gathering for their daughter’s wedding. This is the story of three generations of men and the impacts they have on their families. Can you be different from the father you barely knew? Myfanwy Jones expertly evokes both time and place as well the changing face of family, masculinity and community. There is plenty to discuss here as you unravel family dynamics, the effects of dam building and

drowned towns, and the environs and social history of North Queensland.

10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Artists and artisans from throughout the Moreton Bay hinterland are in full swing preparing for the tenth annual Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios event. Organised by Creative Samford Inc., this self-drive event promises something for everyone. During the first four weekends in June, artists open their studio doors whilst others collaborate in pop up art spaces to exhibit their work. Diverse in medium and techniques, visitors will get to see behind the curtains of creative spaceswitnessing firsthand artists’ inspirations and techniques. Some artists will be involved

for the tenth time and others are joining Trails for the very first time, cementing the event as a vibrant showcase of the best the region has to offer.

Dayboro will be spoilt for choice as three creative spaces open up for visitors this year – Running Duck Studio, Pavilion Artists at Dayboro Showgrounds, Dayboro Art Gallery – representing dozens of local artists. Trails can’t happen without the tremendous support of local businesses and organisations, and we are so incredibly proud to announce Community Bank Samford, part of Bendigo Bank, as Platinum Sponsor for 2024.

Community banking is based on a ‘profitwith-purpose’ model, which means up to 100% of their profits are returned directly to the community that has generated them. Their banking team are local, caring and committed to our community and the growth of local businesses. When you bank with Community Bank Samford, you’re supporting local community events just like this one. A huge supporter of the Arts, Community Bank Samford last year commissioned a public art mural on the front of their building in Main Street

Samford, engaging Creative Samford Inc. members to create the work. The mural will be a special stop on the Trails map, and you will see the unique story of Samford unfold in the five panel artwork.

We would also like to sincerely thank and acknowledge Gold Sponsor Kwik Kopy Geebung, and Bronze Sponsors Chelsea Perry at Craig Doyle Real Estate, The Long Yard Larder Samford and Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge, as well as the ongoing support of City of Moreton Bay and Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT).

The Samford and Surrounds Arts Trail and Open Studios runs from Samford to Cashmere and Eaton’s Hill, from Clear Mountain to Dayboro and across the Moreton Bay hinterland. 1 – 23 June, 10am to 4pm or by appointment. Visit www. creativesamford.com for more information.

Tuckshop Equipment

Enhanced

Lunchtimes have turned legendary at Dayboro State School, with the P&C Association receiving two Community Bank Samford grants to upgrade kitchen equipment. Last year saw the installation of a new grill and new ovens to improve the school’s tuckshop facilities.

Dayboro P&C Grants Officer, Elise Strange, said the school’s tuckshop convenor is delighted with the new equipment, which has been much needed for some time.

“The new grill has been in place for a few months now and has been getting a regular work-out each week making toasties and burgers for the students. Our new grill is much more efficient, so the food can be made closer to service time, making it fresher and more delicious than ever,” Elise said.

“The old grill was nearing the end of its life, so being able to purchase a new grill thanks to our Community Bank Samford grant meant we can continue offering our popular toasties and other items on the tuckshop menu,” she said.

The new ovens have also made a significant impact in terms of additional space now available in the kitchen and improving cooking efficiency.

“We now have more bench space with the removal of a pie warmer, allowing us to explore additional menu options that were limited due to a lack of preparation space,” Elise said.

“The new ovens are also much safer and easier to use than the old oven, making a significant impact on workplace health and safety for our Tuckshop Convenor and volunteers.”

A recent parent survey reported positive

feedback towards the school’s new and improved menu options thanks to this updated equipment. The tuckshop will continue to plan its menu around the capabilities of their new facilities and in consultation with students and parents.

Community Bank Samford’s funding has ensured students at Dayboro State School can continue to access the important services of a school tuckshop.

“Grants such as this are critical in enabling the services of the Dayboro P&C to continue and ensure that the tuckshop can provide an affordable menu for busy parents. The high cost of replacing items in the tuckshop would have meant that, without grants, it may not have been possible to continue the service as existing equipment was retired,” Elise said.

“The tuckshop is also central to many of the P&Cs fundraising efforts, so this would have had a huge flow-on effect for the organisation and school community with reduced fundraising capacity,” she said.

“We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Community Bank Samford for your ongoing support of the Dayboro State School P&C Association. Thanks to you, the future is looking brighter at the Dayboro State School tuckshop!”

SUPPORT CHILDREN IN NEED

Arana VIEW Club is on the lookout for new members who want to give back to their community and make new connections with woman in the area.

VIEW supports the work of children’s education charity, The Smith Family through their learning for Life program. Arana’s Club President Hilary Shaw said this year is the perfect time to join VIEW as social events are truly back on the calendar and our guest speakers are booked in for the year. Events and activities raise funds to support the education of disadvantaged. Australian children, as VIEW is the largest sponsor of the Learning for Life program.

“We have all been hit by the rising cost of living, be it power prices, food or petrol. But these rises have had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough”.

“Parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting dinner on the table or buying their child’s uniform for school. This is why it is so important that we can help children experiencing disadvantage with their education,” she said.

VIEW nationally supports the education of over 1720 students through the program, ensuring that they have educational support and what they need for the school year. Arana VIEW Club currently supports 14 students.

We are always looking for woman of all backgrounds and ages to join and look forward to welcoming new faces at our next monthly meeting which is on the first Wednesday of the month 10.30am for 11.00am at Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade. Grovely. A two course lunch is provides for $35.00 including tea and coffee.

Anyone interested in becoming a member can call Carol on 3355 5349 by 12.00 noon the Thursday before the meeting for further information or to advise your attendance.

SAMFORD’S LOCAL PLANTS

CREEK SANDPAPER FIG (Ficus coronata)

As its common name suggests, this open tree to 10–12m grows along our creeks and rivers, but is also widespread in rainforest and sheltered areas from the coast to the tablelands in Queensland, NSW, Northern Territory and Victoria.

The Creek Sandpaper Fig has egg-shaped to oblong leaves to 10–15cm, with young growth often lobed. The upper surface is highly scabrous (rough, like sandpaper) and the leaves were used by Indigenous people to polish shields of Blue Quandong wood (they also used the milky sap of young growth to heal wounds). The lower surface is paler and has prominent veins. In some years the trees are almost defoliated by chrysomelid beetles.

The hairy fruit to 2cm may be borne on the trunk and branches at any time of year, but mainly in spring and summer. They turn from green to dark purple or blackish when ripe and are relished by birds such as the Australasian Figbird. This Sandpaper Fig is a well-known bush tucker plant: ripe fruit are sweet and edible raw, but it is best to peel back the skin because the hairs may be irritant to some people. This is also a butterfly host plant for the Common Moonbeam (characteristic caterpillar damage illustrated bottom right) and Common Crow butterflies.

This is a surprising hardy tree that will perform well in most soils. It is fast growing in full sun or semi shade and benefits from mulching. This is a useful pioneer species for creek bank stabilisation and a valuable tree for wildlife.

Specimens can be seen at the Samford EcoCorridor (https://www.facebook.com/ EcoCorridor).

NATIVE MURRAYA

Most Brisbanites are familiar with mock orange (Murraya paniculata) which is a very common hedge plant. All murrayas are members of the citrus family and have in common sweet smelling, white flowers and glossy dark green leaves. Coming from Asia, the mock orange thrives in our hot, humid climate. This is a problem as birds eat the oval red fruit and spread the seeds, which readily germinate in our bushland. The very properties (e.g. rapid growth) that make this species such a great hedging plant causes it to outcompete native species. As such, it is classified as an invasive weed throughout Queensland and NSW.

The native murraya (Murraya ovatifolia) is the perfect replacement plant. It too has glossy, dark green, pinnate leaves that arise alternatively along the stem. The white, perfumed flowers in spring to autumn are followed by oval, glossy red fruit. The

REAL ESTATE UPDATE

Could house price growth exceed 10 per cent in 2024?

According to Nerida Conisbee, Ray White Group Chief Economist, it has been a strong start to 2024 for Australian housing markets with house prices up already 2.2 per cent. If this rate of growth continues, it is possible that Australian house prices will increase more than 10 per cent this year.

Conisbee emphasizes that fundamentally, there are many reasons why the outlook for house prices will be stronger than last year. She notes that over the past 12 months, house prices have increased by 9.7 per cent while unit prices are up 7.4 per cent. However, growth has accelerated quickly in the first two months of this year.

Population growth was extremely strong last year, and we didn’t build enough homes. In 2023, we needed 250,000 new homes but built only 175,000. She warns that the pipeline is looking even worse. Over the past 12 months there have only been 163,000 homes approved. Even in a more normal construction environment, not all of these homes will be built. Conisbee predicts, conditions are slowly improving in the construction sector, but they won’t be solved this year. She also anticipates,

main difference between the two species is in surface features. The leaves and fruit of mock orange are smooth whereas the leaves of the native murraya are glandular and the fruit dimpled. The leaflets of the mock orange are pointed as opposed to more rounded in the native form.

This dense shrub to 4m, found naturally in dry rainforests, grows well in a variety

population growth will ease this year, but so too will the number of new homes built.

Conisbee highlights a major change in the interest rate outlook. She notes, monthly inflation came in at 3.4 per cent in the year to January with the Reserve Bank of Australia aiming for interest rates at between 2-3 per cent, the odds of a rate cut are rising.

A major driver of price growth last year were strong conditions in our smaller cities. Population growth drove up south-east Queensland prices while a combination of rising wealth and population growth increased prices in resource-rich states such as Western Australia and South Australia.

Conisbee points out, this year, it is likely to switch. There is about affordability, and unfortunately, rising construction costs have made building new homes far more expensive. Right now, many people, particularly first home buyers, are being pushed into the established home market given it’s cheaper to buy than build.

However, it’s still only early 2024 and a lot can change, but if current house price trends continue this year, house price growth could exceed 10 per cent, with units increasing slightly less.

of moist soils. It will grow in either full or filtered sun. It can be pruned to provide a hedge, or left natural, forms an effective screen. Its fragrant flowers attract both bees and butterflies whilst the fruit attract birds.

The Laceys Creek School was opened on 17th January 1898. The Department of Public Instruction approved local woman Emily Page, to be the teacher, noting “she is eligible, the people want her, there is difficulty about accommodation for a stranger, and she lives on the spot.”

The surnames of some of the children enrolled on the first day were a little confusing with the Enchelmaier children enrolled as Maier and the Schmidt children enrolled as Smyth. Shortly after the school opened, Miss Page wrote to the Department seeking permission to vary the school hours as parents were complaining children were getting home too late to get the cows in.

Emily Catherine Page married George Farrow at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane on 6th May 1908. It was a double wedding as her twin brother William Frederick Page married Elizabeth Ann Nugent the same day.

The school closed in August 1963. The photo is from 1914 but has been incorrectly dated 1913 in the Laceys Creek Book. The Weston family did not move to Laceys Creek until April 1914 with Emily and Ivy enrolled at the school on 5th May 1914.

After the new Dayboro State School building was opened on its present site on 25th June 1920, children from the surrounding one teacher schools used to attend Dayboro State School to complete their last couple of years of schooling. Two of the children in this photo were enrolled at Dayboro State School in 1920. They were Albert Wirth (John Wirth’s father) and Ivy Weston (Carmel Bond’s mother). They rode their horses to Dayboro School each day.

DAYBORO DAY FESTIVAL –SUNDAY 26TH MAY

The Dayboro and Districts Progress Association is in preparation for their annual Dayboro Day Festival. The main street in Dayboro comes alive every year on the last Sunday in May. The festival, incorporating the Antique & Collectables Fair, involves the whole town centre - the main street is closed, detours are in place and various options for parking are available.

The Dayboro District Progress Association Inc has been planning, organising and sponsoring this day for 29 years now. First held in 1991, the festival just gets bigger and better each year attracting over 20,000 visitors to the beautiful Dayboro township. This year you can expect a huge range of attractions and stalls including a street parade, waterless raft race, pineapple pie eating competition, live entertainment, rides, craft and food stalls and a Dayboro Historical Society display.

There will also be a Car Show in the Showgrounds, in partnership with Brisbane Vintage & Antique Car Club.

So much to see and do. Gates open at 8.30am, Sunday 26th May. Don’t miss it!
