Wagner Fest Features Entire “Ring” Cycle

Opera lovers have a chance this month to take in the entire “Ring” Cycle. The five-day marathon begins with a two-hour special detailing the challenges, and then 17 hours of the massive work over the next four days,

with segments ranging from three hours to five hours. The marathon airs on Monday-Friday, Sept. 10-14, beginning at 9pm (8 MT) each evening. The documentary by filmmaker Susan Froemke starts the Wagner festival, followed by the operas in the cycle – “Das Rheingold,” “Die Walküre,” “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung.” Director Robert Lepage, several of the world’s greatest operatic artists and the Metropolitan Opera tackled Wagner’s masterwork. The new production of “Der Ring des Nibelungen” includes: • “Wagner’s Dream” Monday, Sept. 10, 9pm (8 MT), 2 hours. • “Das Rheingold (The Rhine Gold)” Tuesday, Sept. 11, 9pm (8 MT), 3 hours. • “Die Walkure (The Valkyrie)” Wednesday, Sept. 12, 9pm (8 MT), 4.5 hours. • “Siegfried” Thursday, Sept. 13, 9pm (8 MT), 4.5 hours. • “Gotterdammerung (Twilight of the Gods)” Friday, Sept. 14, 9pm (8 MT), 5 hours.

Special reports will pre-empt SDPB Radio’s Dakota Midday on Mondays in September at Noon (11 MT), including a Labor Day special on Sept. 3 and a series of American RadioWorks in-depth education programs on Sept. 10, 17 & 24.
