President’s Report
Did anyone attend a meeting in the last month? Silly question. Of course, we all did. As you think back to all of the meetings you attended, which one did you enjoy or benefit from the most? For me, it was the Minnehaha County Mayor’s Association meeting. The Mayors in Minnehaha County meet on a quarterly basis, rotating from City to City. Of course, we need to debrief at the local watering hole afterwards. So, you might be asking what makes this meeting so memorable. Very simply, it’s the networking. We have no set agenda or topics to guide theconversation. Yet,wejustgoaroundthetableandtalk about what’s going on in each of our cities, what issues or concerns are we experiencing and has anyone else dealt withthissituationbeforeandhowdiditgethandled. This approach seems pretty elementary but it is very effective. As a matter of fact, at our last meeting, I looked at the clock and we had already been meeting for two hours. After the meeting, I couldn’t help but hear a couple Mayor’s comment; “every time we meet, I learn something new. ”
I know the Minnehaha County Mayors are not alone in this, many other Mayors, CityAdministrators and Finance Officers across the State meet regularly. However, if you are not, I would encourageyoutostart. The benefit you gain is well worth the small amount of time you put into it.
