Focusing on Technical Services SD&G County Library Navigator Spring & Summer 2018

By Dave Brush, Systems Support Coordinator

CONTRIBUTORS: Cheryl Servais Darlene Atkins Dave Brush Dave Dolan Eleanor Pietersma Jenna Lamarche Joanne Landry Karen Franklin Kimberly Cadieux Margaret MacDonald Nicholas Seguin Sylvie Juteau

This small team is responsible for the cataloguing and processing of all our new books, audiobooks, DVDs, magazines, and more. A lot goes into these processes, and in recent years we’ve focused our efforts on quickening the processing time of our materials to get them into the hands of our patrons as soon as possible. We are still not quite where we want to be, but we have made huge strides in getting our physical collections to the branches as close to their “street dates” as possible.

& all the staff at the SD&G County Library

Though the Technical Services staff members are involved with almost all the Library’s core operations, most of our patrons will never meet us! Erica, Kim, and I (Dave) work from the Administration office in Cornwall, performing a lot of the back-end tasks to support our front-line staff and to make available the kinds of content that our patrons are looking for.

Another huge priority in Tech Services, is obtaining and returning Interlibrary Loan materials. It is wonderful to be part of a network of provincial libraries that shares its books, DVDs, and audiobooks amongst its members, and we are constantly amazed at how quickly materials move back-and-forth between these far-away systems! And lastly, nearly all the Library’s digital content is set up and managed from the Administration office. This includes our website, our online catalogue, and our eResources. We are very happy to be offering a slew of premium online services for our members – including PressReader digital newspapers, Flipster digital magazines, our OverDrive collection of digital books, and most recently: our new subscription to Lynda.com! All of this takes a great deal of time to set up, monitor, and troubleshoot, but we are thrilled that we are now seeing our highest usage levels ever with our digital content. If you have not yet given any of those and our other online services a try yet, please give them a shot! Though our work can sometimes fly under the radar, we are happy and proud to be part of the SD&G County Library team that strives to deliver the best service possible.

Meet the Staff: Kim Cadieux, Cataloguing/Acquisitions Technician How long have you been with the County Library? I have been with the SD&G County Library for over 4 years. I work alongside my co-worker Erica at our Administration office in Cornwall, but occasionally enjoy opportunities to visit one of our many branches. What do you love most about working at the Library? There are so many things I love about working at the Library, but if I must choose one it would be when we receive new books and DVDs. I just love that new book smell and being able to browse all the titles. I also enjoy being able to work with so many great people and watching our Library grow in so many ways with new technologies and resources. It’s amazing how much has changed since I began working here and I love being a part of it all. If you could tell people one thing about the SD&G County Library, what would it be? I would let people know that we are more than just books! That we have great staff at our branches to assist them and have a variety of new technology and resources available at our branches such as 3D printing, makerspaces, Nintendo Labo, and so much more. What are you reading right now? I am currently reading Talking as fast as I can by Lauren Graham and I am really enjoying it. It is about Lauren Graham and her life working as a woman in Hollywood in the early years to present.

Strategic Planning - Where Are We Going From Here? By Karen Franklin, Director of Library Services

The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry County Library Board and staff are currently reviewing and revising our Long Term Strategic Plan, 2011-2021. Much has changed within public libraries since 2011, when this plan was first written, and the goal is to update where the Library is going – and how we’re going to get there. Strategic planning is a process for making informed decisions that shape and guide the essence of what an organization is, what it does for whom, and what it could and should be in the future. It is the collective work of engaging in big picture thinking, and then tying day-to-day practicalities to the big picture (from: Creating the Future You’ve Imagined: a guide to essential planning; Southern Ontario Library Service, 2007) Strategic plans are best developed every 4-5 years, to ensure that organizations stay focused on achievable goals while keeping operations on course – kind of like charting a sailing trip, while ensuring the boat is still seaworthy! Planning involves answering the following questions: • • • • •

Who are we, and what do we do? What are the factors that currently help us – or hinder us – in doing what we do? What’s new? Are there any trends out there that are compelling, essential, necessary or simply a potential “good fit” for our organization to try? Where do we want to go over the next “X” number of years? How do we get there? How will we know whether we’ve achieved our goal(s)? How do we measure success or failure?

To date, the SD&G County Library has adopted a new Mission Statement, which defines what we do – ‘Connect. Create. Explore.’ We help people connect to the vast universe of information with free access to the Internet and to lots of subject databases; we also provide opportunities for people to connect with each other – at programs, through social media and over shared interests, like book clubs. We encourage creative expression with art displays, “maker” activities, and in the provision of lots of “how to” guides. We invite people to explore their unique personal interests, and facilitate ways to find a job, start a business, travel to a new place, or try a new cuisine. We have also looked at the unique factors that contribute to our place in this community – a primarily rural landscape with little population growth (and indeed, some decline), where family and long-time friendships are highly valued, where traditions around land use and conservation are important, and where future economic developments will be measured in small increments (but with great “sticking power”!). We have recently talked about new and recent trends in public library services, especially in Ontario and in areas near our own – trends that include: the “library of things” (useful items such as small appliances and tools, musical instruments, or technologies); community health, local government, and other shared services; and DIY festivals and events that showcase the library as a community hub. We are now starting to focus our attentions on where we want the County Library to go over the next few years, and to realistically determine what we will need to get there. Will we need more money (LOL!)? Will we need better connectivity to the Internet? Will we be more accessible (which may include how the Library’s offerings get into people’s hands as well as how people get into the Library)? Will we have the right mix of services, products and professionals to get where we need to go? We are learning a lot as we go through this process. We invite anyone who is interested in the future of the SD&G County Library to join our discussions. We continue to meet on the second Thursday of the month at Library branches across SDG (http:// www.sdglibrary.ca/about-us/library-board/meetings-agendas-minutes); all meetings are open to the public, and we welcome the public’s input in helping us to chart our next adventure!

SD&G TEENS

Outreach @ the Dundas Youth Centre By Jess Carty & Shelby Beckstead, Program Facilitators, DYC

The Dundas Youth Centre has worked together with the Winchester Branch of the SD&G County Library to bring fun and learning to our local youth, ages 9-17. The Library’s monthly MiniMakers STEAM program that takes place in our centre is something that our youth really look forward to. Participants always end up leaving having learned something new and comparing experiences with each other. It creates opportunities for conversation and thinking outside of the box. MiniMakers helps the youth learn in a fun and not so structured way which keeps them paying attention! Some examples of the activities that Winchester’s MiniMakers STEAM program offer are; building with cardboard boxes, OZOBOTS, button making, and so much more. The Library and its programs are a great resource to have in our community and really brings everyone together. The kids enjoy having a familiar face come into the centre for an evening of fun, educational activities. The Dundas Youth Centre would like to thank the SD&G County Library for always bringing fun things to learn and explore, and the treats we enjoy afterwards!

Your County Library!

We took home the 2017 Minister’s Award for Innovation for our “Library Express” Depots at the 2018 Ontario Public Library Service Awards. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Sport defines the award as an achievement that “recognizes successful new approaches that demonstrate a positive impact in a community and are of continued value to public libraries”. In 2015, the SD&G County Library embarked on a new initiative to provide library services to communities in SDG without library facilities. To do so, the Library developed an innovative alternative service option, called the “Library Express” Depot. Originally piloted in 2012 when the Williamsburg Branch was temporarily closed for re-construction, the “Library Express” depot model was created to serve residents in areas where the Library has no full-service branch facility. It has allowed the Library to continue offering services throughout SDG, especially in under-served areas. ‘Library Express’ services are now offered in the communities of Glen Walter, St. Andrews West and Dalkeith. A special thank you goes to our community partners who make the ‘Library Express” depots possible: Stinson Gas Station (Glen Walter), Crossroads Convenience (St. Andrews West) and Dalkeith Plus (Dalkeith). Great Reads! The Book Club by Mary Alice Monroe Book Review by Eleanor Pietersma LSA, Iroquois Branch

I have always wanted to be a book club member. My thoughts were that you would meet with like minds to discuss a variety of member chosen titles and in the course of these meetings, share ideas and your lives. As I shelved books one day, I came upon The Book Club by Mary Alice Monroe. Having previously read her books The Beach House and Time is a River, I was acquainted with this author and her deeply textured books, exploring both nature and human nature. The Book Club is the story of five middle aged women from different walks of life facing the challenges of change and the realization of the power of friendship with its tenderness, honesty, and understanding. In reading this novel about five very different women, living in the 50s and 60s, you will be enticed to ponder marriage, children, death, health, and in essence, life issues. Personally, I liked the way each chapter was introduced by a phrase or two from a particular book (one easily recognized) and how that theme became part of the chapter, as well as the whole story. It is a satisfying read and accurately portrays the power of women and their relationships with each other through life and their most essential “book club meetings”.

Connections to the SD&G County Library

“In 2003, we moved as a family from Japan, and settled in Ingleside. With three children, all born in Japan, we needed some opportunities to be both involved in the community and also increase the kids’ English abilities. The Library was the perfect place to make this happen. What is often forgotten is that without community centres and barbershops, there are a dwindling number of places to congregate as a community. The Library has become the place where young and old meet, and often interact. This was the case for our small family. The kids, aged 11, 9 and 4, soon found a place to get books, magazines and DVDS, which all helped in advancing their limited English skills. Outside of school, this also became an important gathering place. Programs offered at the Library were good chances to participate in new experiences, and sometimes cultural events. One in particular, making Ukrainian Easter Eggs, was a fun and unique event. With some additional students visiting from Japan, the Library turned into a cross- cultural hub. This was an experience for the Japanese visitors which honestly rivaled a visit to Niagara Falls. It is rare to have an experience such as this when travelling, and it marked yet another time that having a Library system in place became such a positive and meaningful part of our lives. Whether returning to the area, or coming in as a newcomer, the Library is an important fixture in any community. It helped our transition from another country, and I will always be thankful for that”. ~ Dave Dolan, Ingleside Patron Page 13

Library Board Insider Meet Margaret MacDonald. She’s your new Vice Chair for the Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SD&G) County Library Board. Margaret has spent her life dedicated to improving the literacy of residents in the city of Ottawa, first in her 35-year role as Corporate Communications Manager for the Ottawa Police Service, and subsequently in her work with People, Words & Change (PWC); a free literacy program that serves residents of the city. Margaret grew up with a father who was illiterate, and after witnessing the limitations it presented him, she knew it was her mission to help better the lives of others. She joined PWC in 2013, as a tutor, and is currently the board’s president; Margaret remains active in tutoring those who want to learn in order to enhance their own lives. She also helped to create a two-year national literacy project with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, that sought to identify literacy barriers to members of the public, who were seeking help from the police. While she’s new to the SD&G County Library Board, she’s no stranger to the wealth of resources that are available to all county residents at our various locations. “When I first moved to Finch, 15 years ago, my first stop was to the post office to get my mailbox key, but my second stop was to our Library,” said Margaret. “Libraries are essential to our communities, they enhance our quality of life.” And, she sees the Library as more than just a place to check out a book. “I’m happy to see that people aren’t just going to the Library to get books,” said Margaret. “They’re coming more often for other programs and events.” Libraries are changing with technology and adapting to demands of the communities they serve. “I don’t think everyone is aware of everything the Library has to offer,” said Margaret. “I was astounded by the depth of the ‘eLibrary’ – including the wide array of eMagazines and eNewspapers, and training materials on Lynda.com.” Margaret is retiring from the Ottawa Police Service in 2019, and plans to devote her time to her passions: books, literacy advocacy, and libraries. “We are in a time of radical change,” said Margaret. “And we need to do all that we can to keep libraries alive.
