Academic Advancement Programs (AAP) prepares UCF students — particularly underrepresented, low-income and first-generation college students — to pursue graduate school. AAP works in collaboration with faculty, staff, local and national partners to provide a range of graduate school preparation programs and services. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of initiatives designed to increase their awareness and knowledge of the graduate school application process, graduate funding, summer research programs and fellowship opportunities.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
DIVISION OF STUDENT LEARNING AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Academic advising is an integral part of each student’s academic success and progression to graduation during their undergraduate experience. All students with a declared major will be assigned to their college advising office and begin this advising relationship during their orientation experience. Students who enter the University as an undeclared or exploratory student will work with an academic advisor in the Knights Major Exploration and Transition Center to strategically decide on an appropriate major. Once the new major has been established, the student will be transitioned to the appropriate college advising office. All students are encouraged to establish a relationship with their assigned college advisor to ensure a successful and meaningful undergraduate experience and are expected to meet with their assigned advisor each fall and spring.

Apply for Grade Forgiveness on-line at my.ucf.edu > Student Self Service > Student Center > other academic…> Grade Forgiveness: Application. Third Attempt Surcharge All students enrolled in undergraduate courses are subject to surcharges when they enroll in the same undergraduate college-credit course 3 or more times. Completed courses, withdrawals, and courses with incomplete grades are counted as attempts, including courses repeated in order to raise GPA or achieve a specific grade.
Excess Hours
All students should make every effort to enroll in and complete only once those courses that are required for their major. Although educationally beneficial, selected courses, minors (unless required for a specific major) and additional majors or degrees may require students to take excess hours. Excess hours may require students to pay an additional surcharge/fee or may negatively impact eligibility for certain financial aid programs. Students should review their degree audits regularly and consult with an academic advisor to make sure they are not enrolling in excess courses. For more information of the Excess Hours surcharge, please go to registrar.ucf.edu/excess-hours
Undeclared Policy
All students at the University of Central Florida are expected to officially declare a major prior to earning 45 college credit hours (this includes credits earned from CLEP, Dual Enrollment, AP, and IB). An administrative hold to prevent future university registration will be placed on the records of all students that have not declared a major by this time. Students must meet with an academic advisor to have the hold released.
9-Credit Hour Summer Requirement
Students entering the Florida State University System for the first time with fewer than 60 semester hours of credit are required to enroll in a minimum of 9 credit hours during a summer at a four-year Florida state university. This requirement must be met before graduation. Consult the UCF Undergraduate Catalog or undergrad. ucf.edu/as/services/summer-waiver for more information.

FERPA FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
1. What is it? FERPA is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It gives students the right to: • review their education records • request amendment to records • limit disclosure from those records. The law applies to all students who attend institutions that receive federal funding.
2. Who is protected under FERPA? All students currently or formerly enrolled at UCF are protected under FERPA regardless of age or status in regard to parental dependency. Parents of students termed “dependent” for income tax purposes may have access to the student’s education records under certain conditions.
3. What are education records? “Education Records” include any student records in the possession of a university employee which are shared with or accessible to another individual. UCF policy and State of Florida regulations require that certain records be kept. Records may be in any medium. FERPA coverage includes files, documents, and data directly related to the student.
4. What kind of information can be released without prior written consent? UCF may disclose information about a student without violating FERPA through “Directory Information.” This includes the student’s: • Name • Address • Phone number • Date of Birth • Major • Dates of Attendance • Enrollment Status (Grad/Under, Full/ Part-Time) • Athletes’ Weight/Height • Degrees/Honors/Awards Received Students can choose to restrict access to their Directory Information. Contact the Registrar’s Office for information.
5. Who is entitled to student information? • The student • School officials with “legitimate educational interests” as defined in FERPA • Parents of a dependent student defined by the IRS • A person/persons complying with a judicial order or subpoena allowing the institution to release records without students’ consent; “reasonable effort” must be made to notify student before complying • Colleges/Universities where a student seeks to enroll • Federal, State, and local authorities involving an audit or evaluation of compliance with educational programs • Financial Aid offices when regarding aid • Health or safety emergency • Results of disciplinary hearing to an alleged victim of a crime or violence • Any outside party who has the student’s prior written and signed consent Not a comprehensive list
6. What is “Non-Directory Information”? Non-Directory (or “Personally identifiable” information) is anything that can be linked to a specific student’s identity, including but not limited to: • Social Security Number • Email Address • Residency Status • Gender • Religious Preference • Grades/GPA • Race/Ethnicity • Test Scores • Academic Standing • University Identification Number (UCF-ID) UCF will not release “personally identifiable” information to third parties without students’ written and signed consent. PRIOR WRITTEN AND SIGNED CONSENT of the student must be granted each time students’ records are to be accessed and MUST include: • Record(s) to be released • Purpose of the disclosure • Party to whom disclosure may be made • Signature of the student and date signed
7. How does technology impact FERPA at UCF? UCF will ensure that appropriate policies are established to protect the confidentiality of records, that faculty and administrators are educated about the policies, and that the policies are enforced. The same principles of confidentiality must be applied to electronic data as apply to paper documents. These guidelines are not intended to be legal advice. Please refer to your own legal counsel for specific legal advice regarding FERPA.

UCF POLICE DEPARTMENT
3610 Libra Dr 407-823-5555 (Non-emergency) 911 (Emergency) | police.ucf.edu The UCF Police Department (UCFPD) has a big job in keeping UCF’s campuses safe.
Established in 1973, UCFPD currently employs about 80 sworn law enforcement officers who provide police services on the main campus and at UCF Downtown, Rosen College of Hospitality Management and the UCF College of Medicine, as well as at two universityaffiliated housing communities.
UCFPD is an accredited, full-service police department with the mission of reducing crime by providing a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through the application of community policing. This means hiring officers and staff who fit our university; providing them with the finest training, equipment and leadership; and partnering with the campus community to achieve our safety and security goals.
Crime is a reality everywhere, including UCF. To combat this, UCFPD offers several crime prevention programs for the community, including providing safe transportation after hours, self-defense classes, free property registration and two designated parking spots in front of the Police Department for safe e-commerce exchanges. UCF Alerts will notify the UCF community of an emergency — such as severe weather, criminal activity, an active shooter or a bomb threat — and provide general instructions. Depending on the nature of the emergency, follow-up alerts will contain more detailed information.
More frequent updates will typically be shared on social media on UCFPD and UCF’s Twitter accounts, @UCFPolice and @UCF. Current UCF students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled to receive UCF Alerts, and contact information can be updated via myUCF.
