Thus, in what could be considered yet another public service of the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County (EFSDC), the nonprofit organization held a luncheon and fashion show in the Presidential Ballroom of downtown’s upscale US Grant Hotel. They called the event “Cherry Blossoms in Springtime,” and guests were encouraged to dress in shades of pink and
cherry. Most seemed happy to comply, making for a very colorful scene. The event’s celebrity honorary chairwoman was Mary Murphy of San Diego and international dance fame, and the honorary chairman was Ramin Pourteymour — also a celebrity, especially on our local scene. Laura Applegate, Sonya Berg and Daran Grimm all served as fashion chairs. Guests began arriving at 10:30 a.m. to take advantage of a 90minute “social hour,” featuring a shopping boutique, silent auction and book signing, all happening in the big open area outside the ballroom. They took their seats inside at noon, ready for lunch and eager to see what Leonard Simpson, creator of Fashion Forward and well-known fashion show producer, would have in store for them this time. everywhere, including in the painted backdrop of footbridges and cherry trees, in six ceiling-tofloor floral strands hanging near each end of the stage, and on four potted cherry trees near the end of the runway (which, while probably fake, looked beautifully convincing). Like most of Leonard’s fashion shows, this one featured numerous hats and other headgear — many quite “over the top” in more ways than one. Women’s fashions from many designers were modeled; not just daily dress clothes, but also some bridal wear and even a little lingerie (it’s good to see Leonard adding this sort of variety to his shows). There was menswear, too — stylish, though not as exciting. A pair of skilled professional dancers added entertainment numbers between some of the fashion scenes.
