PRESIDENT’S EXECUTIVE SUMMARY STRATEGIC PLANNING REPORT 2014-2015

Dr. Paul Ague, President August 2015

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Action is a key element to strategic planning; however, taking time to reflect on progress provides encouragement and motivation to persist. In the spirit of reflection, it is an exciting time to be at San Diego Christian. The accomplishments of this past year are reasons to celebrate. SDC’s six Big Rocks outlined through “Vision 2019” are our inspiration to harness the energy needed to strive toward our planned future. This update is a report that conveys the vitality that exists throughout our entire community every day as we seek to achieve SDC’s strategic plan. Driven by our mission, SDC’s plan is organized by our strategic initiatives or better known as our ABC’s: Academically Equipped, Biblical Worldview and Cultural Involvement. These initiatives are operationalized with nine strategic priorities that provide our framework as we advance a higher education learning community aimed to prepare academically equipped; culturally and globally involved graduates with a biblical worldview and godly character in order to impact the world for Christ. On behalf of SDC, I am pleased to offer this Strategic Planning Report and to share the compelling stories that demonstrate San Diego Christian’s progress in year one of “Vision 2019.” I hope you will imagine with SDC all that God has planned as we seek to accomplish “Vision 2019” strategically, purposefully and in SDC fashion…with servant leadership. Serving Him by Serving You,

Paul Ague, Ph.D. President

ACADEMICALLY EQUIPPED Strategic Initiative

#1 SDC is inspiring students through a dynamic Christian higher education experience that encourages rigor, competency, and commitment rooted in a biblical worldview that will lead to a lifetime of service and learning.

To achieve this, SDC is:

1. Creating and sustaining infrastructures and providing resources for an innovative, multi-modality campus. 2. Enhancing learning through current technologies and methodologies both in the classroom and in support of research. 3. Expanding educational opportunities, retention strategies, and facilities to support growth initiatives. SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN | STRATEGIC PLANNING REPORT

ACADEMICALLY EQUIPPED 2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS Graduate Education Receives Approval The Master of Arts in Teaching is SDC’s first approved graduate degree and provides a secure foundation for the development of future master’s degrees to be offered. Graduate education provides opportunity for SDC to expand its influence to current and past students by offering a defined learning experience in content areas that will promote SDC’s core value of servant leadership.

Academic Program Expansion Promoting access and new opportunities for future learners, the SDC academic programs expanded in several areas this past year. The Leadership and Justice major along with the Aletheia Honors Program launched. High school students may now enrich their experience through a Dual Enrollment program. The newly named Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science Department added Pre-Occupational Therapy as a new emphasis, and the Aviation Department has initiated cutting edge coursework that will allow SDC pilots to operate unmanned aerial systems.

Capstone Experience The SDC Capstone senior project has received commendation as an engaging and culminating higher education learning experience. The SDC Capstone showcases student scholarship and research while promoting student reflection and perception of their educational experience in their chosen major.

Academic Leadership The Academic Division organized the Academic Council, a team of proven academic leaders, and the APS Academic Senate, a nontraditional academic policy team, in order to prepare for “Vision 2019’s” plan enrollment growth. These leaders will stimulate vision and innovation for future academic initiatives.

BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW Strategic Initiative

#2 SDC affirms its commitment to God’s preeminent perspective on life and the realization that He created and enables each person to be a life-changing influence for Christ.

To achieve this, SDC is:

1. Integrating programs to advance standards of academic excellence and to emphasize godly character and servant leadership. 2. Upholding and developing the collaborative Christ-centered campus environment. 3. Establishing learning relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and external stakeholders.

BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW 2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS Scholarship and Faith The academic discussion promotes assessment of the biblical worldview and the student’s spiritual formation through the General Education Capstone and SDC’s academic programs. This molds the importance of scholarship and faith as mutually important.

IMPACT 2014 IMPACT 2014, the Great Commission and servant leadership in action, was a new initiative this year. SDC’s chapel experience provided a global mission focus throughout the year, but IMPACT 2014 created the opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to engage in what was learned by sharing the gospel both locally and globally through short-term missions projects.

Service Beyond Borders This past year our missions teams built a soccer field in the villages of Thailand and provided soccer clinics throughout the region. SDC promoted cross-cultural experiences for students, faculty, and staff. In Thailand, business students worked and ministered in the coffee industry while pre-medical students offered support in clinics in Nigeria. Other teams served in Nicaragua, Mexico, and Poland exemplifying SDC’s service beyond borders.

CULTURALLY INVOLVED Strategic Initiative

#3 SDC is encouraging students, faculty, and staff to be responsible stewards while serving in local communities and global opportunities.

To achieve this, SDC is: 1. Facilitating programs that will support faculty, staff, and students to advance local and global involvement. 2. Developing and promoting cultural diversity on and off campus. 3. Connecting with external constituents to advance educational and service opportunities.

SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN | STRATEGIC PLANNING REPORT

CULTURALLY INVOLVED 2014-2015 HIGHLIGHTS Community Connection SDC students, faculty and staff committed thousands of service hours through multiple projects locally and globally recognizing our responsibility to serve ethically and compassionately. Participating in recognized events such as National Homeless Census, MLK Service Day, Santee School Beautification Day as well as organizing youth events with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Students were afforded the opportunity to create, imagine, and lead experiences. This provides practical and transformational application as students prepare for their future.

Hawks For Life SDC alumni circle the globe. Using regional events, alumni are being connected to the resources and networking opportunities afforded by the relocation to SDC’s new campus.

Career Development Center SDC’s Career Development Center was launched this past year. The Career Development leadership is creating opportunities through graduate and career fairs, resource tools, and networking for students and alumni to develop the internal and external partnerships in order to create future opportunities.

Institute for Community Engagement The ICE Center is gaining momentum. San Diego Christian’s ICE Center offers learning to enrich, empower, and engage individuals, families and communities through personal and professional development. We are striving to become a leading partner with local and global communities by enhancing a passion for learning with the resources of our faculty, staff, and students.

ADVANCED ENERGY Efficiency with the Solar Project SDC installed and activated it’s first set of solar panels in an effort to operate energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings. The project is part of the institution’s initiative to support the Santee community by utilizing clean, renewable electricity and reducing harmful emissions and waste.

“This is the beginning of renewable energy for San Diego Christian and our continued commitment to be environmental stewards in the Santee community.” - Dr. Paul Ague, President
