The San Diego Superior Court, established over 150 years ago, is the second largest court system in the state and the third largest in the nation. The San Diego Superior Court has jurisdiction over all felonies, misdemeanors, civil cases, small claims, traffic, cases involving title and possession of real property, dissolution of marriage, probate, conservatorship, mental health and juvenile proceedings. SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA The Southern District of California is comprised of San Diego and Imperial Counties, with headquarters in San Diego. Currently, the Southern District has thirteen active district judges, five senior district judges, and ten full time magistrate judges in San Diego. An eleventh full-time magistrate judge sits in El Centro. While the district courts receive both civil and criminal filings, the Southern District is well known for its criminal caseload. Because of its proximity to the border, the Southern District of California has one of the highest criminal caseloads per active judge in the country.
