This month the Active Health Committee would like to spotlight our community Grief Support Group. Grief, by definition, is a deep sorrow, especially that caused by someone's death.
Have you experienced the loss of a spouse/partner, parent, child, sibling or a friend, or even a beloved pet? Please know that you are not alone. SCOV offers a grief support group comprised of a caring community of residents who have experienced a loss and are in varying stages of grief. Together we will explore the seven stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance and hope, and processing grief.
Our group is ready to meet you exactly where you are. You will learn to choose what is best for you, connect with others and communicate your needs.

The committee will reconvene Wednesday, September 6. Lots of activity has been completed this summer with updates in the pool area, including additional heaters and new flooring in the fitness area. We are still waiting for a couple of back-ordered items, including updated ladders and backstroke flags. The pool and fitness area have been used a lot this summer because of the ongoing heat. We encourage anyone who hasn't visited to stop by and enjoy the facilities.
This next year we will look at updating some of the gym equipment and other items as needed. Thanks for the community input; stay cool.

The “Pop-of-Color” that had been added to the Development Standards for Front Entry Doors has now been extended to include the Security Doors which are attached to our Front Entry Doors. There is a color chart that applies, and if you plan to paint your Security Door one of the Southwest Style Colors, then your Front Entry Door cannot be a different Southwest Style Color. These color updates apply only to the Security Door that is against the Front Entry Door. For details, please read Development Standard Section 2.12 along with Appendix C.

Lately we have been hearing a lot about the importance of respectful communication. Treating each other with respect is key to SCOV being a desirable place to live. That is what the SCOV Code of Conduct is all about. On page 5 of the Owner & Resident Handbook there is a description of the civil behavior expected for residents and guests in SCOV public spaces. You can find the handbook in the members section of the SCOV website. If you would like to file a complaint, look under Member Services in the Members Section of the website.

The SCOV community directory is separate from the administration’s HOA database. Here are four ways the directory is used:
1. Paper Phone Book: For residents who want to be included, it lists names, addresses, phone numbers, hometowns and former occupations. Email addresses are not listed. Published annually.
2. Online Directory (located in the nonpublic area of the SCOV website): For residents who want to be included, it lists names, addresses, units, lots, phone numbers, email addresses, hometowns and occupations. It is searchable and updated monthly.
3. Posse Directory: This confidential listing by address shows names and phone numbers–even if those phone numbers are not listed in the paper or online directories. This allows the Posse to contact you should they see something amiss with your home when they are on their rounds. It is updated monthly.
4. SCOV State and Block/Unit Club Party Planners: If you choose to list your contact information in the online directory, party planners can request this information by unit or state.

Featured artists this month are Charlene Meyers and Trisha Bergen. Charlene had a varied career in Pennsylvania in different businesses for 17 years. After moving to Hawaii, her photography hobby turned into a business. She spent 20 years on the Big Island, moving to SCOV in 2020. "Now I make fused glass, specializing in ruffled vases, wall pockets and items using plants that I have dried and cover in fine glass before firing. This process is called vitri."
Raised in the Hudson Valley, majoring in art in college, traveling the world, exploring and skiing, Trisha settled in the West, first in Taos, New Mexico. Now in SCOV and totally absorbed in glass fusing, she loves the flexibility and also the restrictions of warm glass. "Brightly colored dichroic glass is fantastic. My glass is hand-cut, hand-shaped. I layer and fire the glass in my kiln, working with it several times until I see what I love."

The SCOV Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn. It is a free, short-term loan service to SCOV residents and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 am. We have many medical items, tables and chairs, rollaway beds and mattresses, and some children's items. You are welcome to make reservations up to two months in advance of a need either at the Loan Room or on the website. Walk-ins are always welcome. We are funded primarily by the aluminum can collection (those blue bins you see around) and donations. Please feel free to come in to see what we have available.

SCOV Sidewalks
The Town of Oro Valley is responsible for the inspection and repair of sidewalks within the public right of way that are a safety concern including SCOV. We are sad to note that founding committee chair, Tempe Johnson, passed away in late July. Tempe and her husband, Dave, were SCOV residents from 1995 until 2022. While both volunteered in the community in many ways, we'll always remember Tempe's smile and the beau-

The Posse is always looking for members. There are 2,488 homes in SCOV, and currently we have 114 posse volunteers. Since two volunteers are needed for every patrol and each volunteer is asked to patrol twice a year, that means we only have 114 days covered annually. Many volunteers are gone during the summer, putting more strain on our wonderful volunteers. We ask that you go on patrol two times a year (each patrol is three hours) for a grand total of six hours. The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course, in addition to threatening homes. To better manage such exposures, the Board formed the Chalk Creek Commission in 2015, with the objective of developing a program to monitor the wash and provide preventive maintenance. Based on a recommendation from the commission, semiannual inspections conducted by the Properties Committee were begun, and a fund was established for preventive maintenance. That fund balance is maintained at roughly $100,000.
It is a testimony to the foresight of the Board in initiating this endeavor that the fund has required only two replenishments of $25,000 each over the last five years to keep it at the target level. Preventive maintenance really does work.

Overseeding Schedule and Access Changes at the Golf Course for the Upcoming Season
September marks an essential maintenance period for our golf course when winter ryegrass is overseeded in preparation for the upcoming season. Here is a comprehensive guide to the changes and events that golfers and residents should be aware of.
Golf course closure dates: The golf course will undergo overseeding from Monday, September 18, through Sunday, October 8. It will reopen for play on Monday, October 9. During this period, residents are kindly asked not to drive golf carts or walk on the course to allow the new grass seed to be properly planted and watered.
Driving range and putting green accessibility: During the overseeding process, the golf course will be closed, and the driving range tee will offer restricted access. Players will be able to hit balls off the artificial turf tee line. However, the putting green will remain open for practice.
Pro Shop hours:
• Regular hours (6 am-5 pm) will continue through Sunday, September 17.
• The shop will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, September 18 and 19.
• Limited hours will be in effect from Wednesday, September 20 through Sunday, October 8, with the shop open from 8 am-noon.
Golf cart guidelines: After reopening on Monday, October 9, all golf carts must remain on the cart path for a couple of weeks. The anticipated date for golf carts to resume driving on the grass is Monday, October 23.
Special events and reminders: Look out for special events planned during the overseeding period, including our annual 5k run/walk scheduled for Saturday, October 7.

Growth regulators are applied that limit excess growth as well. The week prior to overseeding, another growth regulator is applied that puts the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. This allows the mowers to scalp the Bermuda grass down so the ryegrass seed can better enter the canopy and eventually germinate.
This summer the transition was successful with minimal bare areas that needed to recover. As a result, all the fairways will be overseeded again this year. The green surrounds are starting to establish a healthier Bermuda grass stand from all the sand topdressing and aeration. However, they still need more time to develop a better root system to endure an overseed, so overseed will look exactly like it did last year.

How much golf do you play in a year? Like most clubs, The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club uses the United States Golf Association handicapping system, GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network, pronounced “jin”). GHIN calculates and tracks your handicap index and even the number of rounds you play and posts scores during the year.
So how much golf can you play in a year? According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most holes of golf played in a year is 14,625 by Chris Adam, all at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Hawaii, from January 1 to December 31, 2012. Chris played 809 full rounds and seven half rounds over the course of the year.
While that record will be hard to beat, joining The Views 18-Hole Men’s Golf Club is a great way to play more golf, meet new friends and have a good time. While there will be only two events in September, the club will start up again in October after the overseeding. Contact John or Cliff, listed above, for more information.

September is when golf course maintenance shifts its priorities. Instead of trying to grow healthy Bermuda grass on the tees and fairways, the focus changes to slowing down the Bermuda grass in preparation for overseeding. Healthy Bermuda grass provides a great seed bed for the germinating ryegrass seed, versus a thin stand of Bermuda grass that exposes the seed to heat and a lack of moisture. However, if the Bermuda grass is still rapidly growing while the ryegrass is trying to establish, it will outcompete the new seedlings and cause the ryegrass canopy to thin out.
The Bermuda grass growth is slowed down in several ways. Fertilization was stopped on fairways and tees around the first week of August. Mowers are vertically mowing to thin the canopy which slows the rapid growth and density.
The summer season for the league is coming to an end with one more league game on Thursday, September 7 followed by the final skins game on Thursday, September 14. The course will close for overseeding on Monday, September 18. Many of us who are around during overseeding will play courses in the area that are open.

As the month winds down, the members who have been gone for the summer will begin drifting back from such exotic environs as Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin and even New York. While they missed the really great (hot) Tucson summer this year, it will be good to see everyone return. The first league day is Thursday, October 12.
If you are a newcomer to SCOV and you want to come out and play in the league, come join us. It is easily done by going to The Views Golf Club website. Be sure to sign up for the hole-in-one insurance, because you never know.

League president Pattie Shock appointed a special committee early this past summer to review and update the terms of play for each of our league competitions. The purpose of this review is to better meet the objectives of the club. These objectives include promoting an interest in 18-hole competition and to provide fellowship through regular play and competitive events, while incorporating fun, social and charitable activities.
The committee is made up of Joann Breslin, Barbara Hall, Debbie Huffman, Darlene Lamb, Pattie Shock and Claudia Svarstad. The committee make-up is representative of our membership in terms of age and tee box preferences. The committee met in July and August. Their final recommendations will be made to the board in September. The board’s final recommendations will be made to the general membership.
It will soon be time to register for our 2023-2024 season. It will be a great season of competition and fun.

This group includes everyone from those newly diagnosed, currently in treatment, cancer survivors or those who are caring for someone with cancer. Our meetings include a valuable exchange of information and discussion with those who have had cancer and undergone chemotherapy, surgery or radiation treatment. We learn from each other. Sandie Roberts, SCOV resident who has a family member dealing with cancer, facilitates the group. The focus of this group is to share feelings and experiences with cancer risk, current cancer and post-cancer. You may be an individual with cancer or a loved one of a person with cancer. We hold this safe space to be able to discuss all aspects of the disease.

As you may have already noticed, our SCOV community is incredibly rich in artistic talents. The Art League supports their art work by coordinating multiple art displays in the Activity Center, Desert Oasis and Library facilities. The displays include items from colored pencil work, photography, clay creations, open arts studio (print making/etching, watercolor, oil, acrylics, fine arts), sculptures, and our newest artwork, quilts.
This summer the Activity Center showcased the Art Sale, with over 130 resident art pieces, many with reduced sale pricing. We hope you will take the time to stop and enjoy the art at the sale, as well as the displays at other buildings.

Patti Ullmann is one of our newest potters. After attending orientation last fall, she was ready to dig in and create her pieces. “Everyone on the clay and glaze orientation teams was easy to approach with questions. They were extremely helpful,” she said.
One of Patti’s most challenging moments is the design process. As she noted, “I appreciate the individual creativity that is possible, and it does take some time to make that decision.” Among Patti’s special interests are wall pockets. Wall pockets can be filled with either fresh flowers and plants for outdoor display, or be filled with silk plants for indoor use.
Regarding glazing, Patti said, “Glazing the newly made pieces is something of an adventure.” Patti is happy with the colors available in the Glaze Studio and is always eager to try new combinations.

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.
If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Pictured is a small portion of the train display in the Modeler’s Room with an inset picture of Bob Rubino, who died earlier this year. Club member Bill Nagel has been updating and improving this section of the display, and Bill placed the sign showing R. Rubino as mayor (center). This is a tribute to Bob who was a founding member of the Modeler’s Club and a former SCOV Board president. An avid modeler and train enthusiast, he was instrumental in the 7½ scale model (rideable) train at Gadsden-Pacific division toy train operating museum.
This is only a small section of the total display which has many scenarios and buildings. Please come by the modeler’s room and enjoy the full display and visit the GadsdenPacific division toy train operating museum in Tucson. Come to our meetings and enjoy some history and models.

The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in Catalina Vista/ Art Studio. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about our club, stop in on Monday mornings or contact Dale Foster. Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and art room window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside the Library and inside the Library.
The photo is a recently completed wall clock, a relief sculpture by Coni Arseneau. This project took more time than she originally expected. The foundation material is MDF board with wire mesh stapled to the board for the clay to adhere. Unfortunately, Coni didn’t consider the expansion and contraction when the board was baked and cooled, which caused bubbles and cracks in the clay. The second time, she used the same materials but applied the product Sculpey® Bake & Bond prior to applying the clay. She still had some small cracks and one bubble, but this time she was able to make the necessary repairs to complete the project.

Seniors for Kids continues to meet in the Sewing Room twice weekly to create the many needed items that will be distributed at Christmas. The woodworkers have been working on their creations, too. We are making puzzles and new items along with the trucks, cars, boxes and cradles that are currently out for painting.
Seniors for Kids will gratefully accept yarn and cloth donations for our charitable work. We have grown this summer and appreciate our new members, but we could use more help.
Stop by the Gift Shop and check out the toy items that are for sale. This income helps us purchase materials for the toys we distribute during the holiday months. Last month we were front and center in the featured artist window.

The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.
Ilse Schmitt recently joined our group. The picture is her first project in progress. As you can see in the picture, she finished the middle and corners then worked on the outer sections. After finishing the middle section, she realized she did not have enough wool strips to finish the project. The closest color that the club had available are the light color wool strips that are in the picture. Ilse dyed the light-colored strips in hot “English Breakfast” tea (one bag) and one drop of food coloring. The dyed wool very closely matches the original color.

Several year-round members made the best of this unusually hot Arizona summer and regularly spent time in the air-conditioned silversmith and lapidary shops. Beautiful gems were cut and polished and many fine pieces of silver jewelry were created. Also, our purchasing agent, Mark Schmaedecke, reorganized our supply room, with help from longtime member, Ric Raynor. New equipment and supplies were ordered and placed in operating order. We look forward to welcoming back seasonal members, and know that they will enjoy our many improvements.

Most year-round members still bring their dogs early mornings or very late afternoons to avoid the heat of the day. Late afternoon dog park users often run into monsoon conditions. We might get rained on or need to rush to our vehicles to beat the inclement weather home. We appreciate it when we can enjoy a sunset, or even a rainbow at that hour. We agree it’s all good, and the spurts of action our dogs have gives them a change of pace.

Summer rains are upon us; the word monsoon refers to a system of winds that changes seasonally, bringing wet and dry periods to a region. In the Sonoran desert, the summer monsoon consists of winds from the sea flowing inland to fill the partial vacuum created by rising continental air warmed by the summer sun. These winds bring moisture. The belt of westerlies shifts north in the summertime, allowing moist air from Baja California to move into the region and bring monsoon rain. Enjoy this time of renewal and hope in the desert.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.
There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Participants should be able to do a basic swim stroke. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most items are available at the pool. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help learn the various movements. We enjoy a great workout in a fun class.

Our club performs gentle water exercises approved by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion. Water exercise is especially helpful for arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Our members are fun, accepting and welcoming. We frequently hear “I came for the exercises and love all of the friends I have made.”

Energetic Exercisers meet in the cool, spacious Auditorium. A monthly calendar tells the focus for the day, such as aerobics, cardio tone or interval training. Equipment such as weighted bar, kettle bell or fitness circle adds variety and is always optional. Expert instructor Sally Martinez aims to help exercisers develop and maintain strength, balance and heart health. Everybody moves at their own pace and can always adjust to individual needs. Dress is exercise casual with sport shoes required. Membership in Energetic Exercise costs only $3/year, and then you purchase a 12-class punch card for $30. Newcomers can try out a first class for $2.50. If you want a cool, healthy indoor activity, come join us.

While most members are motivated recreational swimmers, we also include nationally-ranked master swimmers, triathletes, and former club and university swimmers. The group generally swims about 2,400 yards, though some do more and some do less.

SCOV offers Joseph Pilates mat classes twice per week on Mondays and Thursdays. The benefits that come from performing specific strengthening and stretching exercises strengthen the body's core muscles (your abdomen and back). These exercises increase spine mobility and build flexibility. More benefits include better balance and muscle tone plus increased stamina. The fall tai chi session begins Thursday, October 5, and runs through the beginning of December. Tai chi is a gentle, low impact exercise with many health benefits available to people of all ages and fitness levels. Many medical professionals recommend tai chi to help their patients improve balance and prevent falls. It also works to build muscle strength, increase flexibility, improve breathing, and reduce stress. No prior experience necessary.
Courses are offered three times per year in the fall, winter, and spring (each course covers 10 weeks). Practice sessions are available year-round for club members who have completed at least one 10-week course.

Five Crowns is a fun and easy game to play. See website for short video. Players are randomly assigned to tables and each game normally takes one hour. You can come for one, two or three games. For each game you play, you need to bring 12 dimes and one quarter. We’ve had lots of people playing, even during the slow summer months. New players are always welcome.

All games are high-low except for Texas hold’em and crazy pineapple, which are high only. Stakes are 25¢ for the early round of bets and 50¢ for the last two rounds.

Cards are provided. Dealer antes 5¢ per player and chooses the game. Absolute requirements are to leave politics and religion at the door and enjoy three hours of no-hassle, understandable poker. We welcome new players. Bring nickels, dimes and quarters.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.
Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.
We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through the Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

Our weekly activities are round robins on Mondays (straight 8-ball) 2-4 pm, Tuesdays (“One-Fifteen” 8-ball) 1:15-4 pm, and Thursdays (straight 8-ball) 10 am-noon. All members at all levels are welcome. These round robins are for fun only (not for money). Based on the number of players that show up, we will have a rotation set up, so everyone plays every round. Wednesdays from 10 am-noon are reserved for the women’s division.

Common ravens are one of two species of ravens in Arizona and in the U.S. It is the raven most common in SCOV and is often confused with the smaller crow by folks from other parts of the country. Surprisingly, crows are almost non-existent in this part of Arizona, but can be found farther north in our state. Mostly a bird of the western U.S. and all of Canada, the common raven has a very unusual distribution, with a narrow finger pointing down the Appalachian Mountains.
We are a 110-plus member, activity-oriented group, and all SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds here in Arizona (we carpool). If you are interested in joining us, be sure to ask Peggy Smith to be added to our mailing list so we can keep you up-to-date on the trips.

Bocce is a fun activity that people of all ages and abilities enjoy. You just need to be able to pick up the ball and roll it. Annual dues are $5. A membership form is on the club website under Club Info. Please arrive 15 minutes before the starting time and pick up a wooden stick from the starter. Space limits each session to the first 32 players, with members given priority. Courts are open to only Bocce Club League play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7-9 pm. We’ve started having a social hour on the Kiva Patio after bocce play Wednesdays around 9 pm. BYOB.
