Association News

From the Board of Directors

Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community.

All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors

janefairchildscov@yahoo.com

Keep Yourself Informed

I have observed, as a new board member, that there is a lot of misinformation being passed around our community. I have spoken with many of you and the questions I get indicate that you are trying to form opinions without all the facts.

I was in the same boat until recently. I had not attended board and committee meetings because it seemed they were already doing a great job managing our projects and finances. As an Ambassador, I happily share this positive aspect of our community with potential residents. However, when I became a candidate for the Board of Directors, I was encouraged to attend board and committee meetings during the election period. It was a real eye opener for me.

Now, having seen how the Board operates and the great work being done in the various committees, I feel that I would have benefitted by participating more. It has been gratifying to hear residents’ comments, different opinions, and discussions in these meetings.

We have many knowledgeable residents who volunteer and care deeply about SCOV. You don’t have to commit large amounts of time to attend any of the open Association meetings, and they are posted in each "This Week in SCOV" for the following week. Attending a few of these meetings a year will help you to understand and appreciate current SCOV issues and get the real facts from their sources, rather than from our ever vibrant rumor mill. Keep yourself informed.

We Accomplished a Lot

As we wind down another fiscal year, I can’t help but look at all that has been accomplished by our Board and staff. Let’s take a look back. This past year we didn’t start any major projects, but we were able to nearly finish up a significant one.

• The Activity Center was opened after a long time of being closed for renovation. The facility is beautiful, and I’ve heard so many positive comments from residents, the Mayor and other elected officials. We added three restrooms and expanded another as a part of this project. The Kiva Room is a wonderful addition that allows for large gatherings in a setting that lends itself to the beauty of the outdoors. Talking about outdoors and gathering space, the completely redone Kiva patio is a great place. With the shaded area that includes a gas fire pit, it will serve the residents well year-round.

• The Bistro Coffee & Wine Bar is a great addition to the Activity Center. It is comfortable, a nice place to relax and gather with your friends in an environment that is inviting.

• Thanks to a lot of people, SCOV passed a vote to purchase the Copper Health Building. The purchase is completed and the Association now holds title to the property at 1119 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. It has been renamed the Copper Center. The Board of Directors is in the process of taking the proper steps to determine how the building will be used and how this will impact the use of the current Welcome Center.

I would like to thank all of you who shared your wisdom and knowledge that helped us to accomplish so much this past year. All of this was accomplished without a special assessment, which is even more amazing. Kudos to all involved. You are all superb.

It’s More Than Living... It’s A Lifestyle!

I Could Have Danced All Night (Make that 9 PM at SCOV)

One of the benefits of living in an active adult community such as Sun City Oro Valley is that if you love to dance, you don't have to seek out a local nightclub to work on your moves. There are plenty of opportunities right here at home. The renovated Activity Center Auditorium has a new larger dance floor that is being enjoyed by several dance clubs. Club information can be found on page 24.

The Starlight Ballroom Club offers the chance to get on a dance floor and do swing, waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha cha and tango dances. This fun SCOV club provides an opportunity to enjoy an evening out in a festive atmosphere with others who like to ballroom dance and socialize. Dance classes and ballroom dances are scheduled throughout the year. Practice sessions are every Wednesday evening at 5 pm. Dance lessons will be offered all summer.

In addition to a monthly dance, the club holds a New Year's Eve dance with live music: a great chance to dress up and show your footwork. www.scstarlightdanceclub.wixsite.com/scstarlightdance

If you don't have a dance partner, the Folk Dance Club may be for you. Most dances are traditional from around the world and are taught prior to dancing. The club website has links to videos for all the dances that they do. With no membership fees, no partners and no meetings, it's a great chance to get some exercise and have some low-stress fun. It’s also good for the brain and cardiovascular systems. New dancers are always welcomed and encouraged every Friday, 10-11:30 am, AFC/ Studios 1 & 2. www.scovFD.club

Line dancing with the Sunliners Club is popular with SCOV residents. No partner is required. With dances and classes for abilities ranging from beginner to intermediate, there's something for everyone. The Introduction to Line Dance class that is usually offered in January is a great time to try

it out, but new people are welcome to attend a beginner class anytime. Classes are taught by professional dancers and practice sessions occur weekly. The club offers regular social and practice dance events. Visit the club website to learn more. www.scovsunliners.wixsite.com/sunliners

For all you baby boomers, the Rock 'n Roll Club may be just what you're looking for. The club holds a monthly dance with live music from October to May. Plan a great outfit for the Halloween dance which always includes a costume contest with prizes. www.scovrrc.org

Dust off your boots and join the Kactus Kickers for dancing to country and western music. The club offers dance lessons from mid-January to early March and a monthly dance with a live band, October-May.

Fun opportunities to dance without a partner and get a cardio workout are Zumba® and Aqua Zumba® classes that are offered by the Association. Our certified instructor, Lonnie Davis, guarantees that you'll have fun while getting a workout and moving to lively music. Zumba® mixes together Latin-inspired rhythms with easy-to-follow moves. The result? A fun and effective fitness class that feels more like a night out dancing.

Aqua Zumba® is water aerobics with a Latin flair. This workout is good for those who need low impact exercise. The Association-sponsored Zumba® classes require a $2 fee. Purchase a $20 ten-class punchcard online www. suncityorovalley. com > Fitness > Purchase Exercise Pass.

Whatever your interest is, there are many opportunities to dance all night at SCOV (or at least until 9 pm).

Welcome Becky Vaughan, our new Administrative Manager. She comes to us from West Virginia, but previously lived in Tucson. She has worked in high security corporate offices for a copper and gold mine. She will be the manager of the Administration Department which includes the library, fitness and administrative staff. Stretching

A tried-and-true recovery technique is stretching before and after your workout to allow your muscles to warm up and cool down, respectively, enhancing your flexibility and mobility.

Two types of stretching include dynamic and static. Dynamic stretching is most effective when performed before exercising. Dynamic stretching is movement-based mobilization of the body through different patterns (for example, squatting, lunging, single leg stance) and planes of motion. The goal is to increase the activation of the muscles that will be used during a workout.

Static stretching is most effective after completing a workout, static stretching involves slowly moving a muscle to the end of its range of motion and holding the position for 3060 seconds for up to four rounds. Because static stretching elongates the muscles for a period of time, it can lead to temporary weakness afterward. So get up slowly.

Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)

The committee will convene in September and begin our monthly meetings. Have a great summer.

Architectural Inspection Group

Conveyance Coordinator, Jack Mooney, 520-917-8087, scoroval@ciramail.com

What happens if someone sells their home without a listing inspection being done? SCOV will be electronically notified that a home is under contract. As required by law, the Association must complete what is called an escrow inspection if a listing inspection has not been done in the past ninety days. Violations found during this inspection are submitted directly to the title company, with the seller and buyer receiving a copy of the report. SCOV will not reinspect those violations until after the close of escrow. In most cases, a listing inspection is preferred as it gives the seller time to consider addressing the violations listed against the property prior to going into escrow rather than trying to negotiate them during escrow.

Please keep in mind, you must have a listing or escrow inspection completed before closing escrow. To request an inspection, go to the SCOV Member webpage > Member Services > Sell Your Home. Complete and submit the short form. For further details, please contact the Conveyance Coordinator at the Welcome Center or by calling 520-917-8087.

Architectural Review

Jim Cherry 612-805-5637 ARC@suncityorovalley.com

Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 pm

This spring, the Architectural Review Committee reviewed a number of gutter/downspout projects. For this type of work, be sure to keep three components for the submittal in mind:

1. The color of the gutters must closely match the trim and the downspouts must also closely match the home base color. If the manufacturer finishes are not closely matching, then make plans to have the material painted once installed.

2. The downspouts need to be directing water away from the home and towards the established water flows of the yard. For many, those are the dry river bed set-ups.

3. Water should flow to the sides of the property and then forward to the streets or down the driveway.

It continues to be amazing that we spend so much time in the desert focused on water drainage.

Code of Conduct Review Board

Chair Marlene Branz, 618-670-1063 cconduct@suncityorovalley.com

The SCOV Code of Conduct (COC) defines civil behavior for residents and their guests. The COC shall be followed when using SCOV facilities, common areas, digital and written interactions. When buying a home in SCOV, every homeowner is presented with a copy of SCOV’s governing documents including the Owner & Resident Handbook in which you can find the COC on page 5: Members > Documents > Owner & Resident Handbook.

By adhering to the COC, we maintain mutual respect, honesty and courtesy with our fellow residents and others who enjoy SCOV public spaces. Let’s all do our best to make SCOV the best place to live.

One of Friends of the Library's (FOL) members-only events is Great Reads. This popular presentation of reviews of favorite books published since January 2023 is coming November 9. We could use your help. Pick up a form in the Library, which has four simple questions about your favorite book(s). Take it with you. Your review will help spread the word about our most interesting reads.

FOL membership is $15 pp or $20/family. Hardcover books cost, on average, over $20 and large print books cost more. Please consider adding a donation to your memberships.

We will be resuming our biggest fundraiser, the Home Tour, in 2024. Do you have a home that has gone under a major or minor remodel? If we can add your house to our Home Tour, you will be aiding the SCOV Library enormously. Call us so we can explain what all this involves from you. Come to our monthly fun Book Bingo Wednesday, June 21. See Coming Events for more details.

Artist of the month is Melanie Stinson, who started painting around five years of age. She attended college as an art major, discovered clay, and was hooked immediately. Melanie tells us, "After college, I purchased my own wheel, kiln and supplies and started a studio in my home. My pieces were sold at various art fairs in the 70s and 80s, and commissions from people wanting sets of dishes. Back then, most of my wares were meant for functional use.

"I had to take a 20-year hiatus, but I knew that when I re-

tired I wanted to pursue clay again. Luckily, we found SCOV and moved here in 2018. I can get lost in pottery for hours and things just sometimes happen without really setting a plan in my head. My favorite clay is Hawaiian red. The glazes do well and the redness of the clay finishes beautifully with firing."

Are you creative? Do you enjoy meeting new people?

The Gift Shop welcomes residents who create quality arts and crafts to become consignors. If you are considering a new challenge and are seeking an outlet for your creations, email maxineyunker@gmail.com or melduck1@yahoo. com. We would love to hear from you.

Thank you to all those who donated to the Loan Room. Those funds enable us to purchase and maintain the Loan Room with free loaning services to the SCOV community. Our needs, and yours, continue throughout the year and donations are always welcome.

Put those aluminum cans to work for SCOV. Deposit empty, rinsed aluminum cans in the box outside the Activity Center kitchen. Please do not deposit unrinsed cans which can attract bees and may become a hazard. We need to make sure all new residents are aware of our recycling program, if you have new neighbors, let them know.

Summertime is not as busy in the Loan Room. We usually check our inventory and attempt to stay current with the medical needs of our community. We welcome visitors and will try to assist and advise you on items that might solve future problems.

The committee is updating the Tipster Article Standards and is developing what we hope is an easier to use guide for submitters. One change that we are implementing is how we designate time of day. Previously, we used capital letters for AM and PM. This month, you will notice that we are using am and pm.

Many thanks to those of you who follow our Submitter Guidelines. They exist to achieve consistency throughout the Tipster. Since so much of the Tipster is about meetings and events, submissions that list the day, date, time, place in that order are much appreciated.

How to purchase a membership: If this is your first time purchasing an annual membership, please visit the Pro Shop or call for more information. To renew an annual membership, go to www.theviewsgolfclub.com to purchase or contact the Pro Shop at 520-825-3110.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

Last year (2021-2022) the fairways were not overseeded to give the Bermuda grass a much-needed break after years of consecutive overseeding. As a result, the conditions of the fairways last summer were excellent with a full canopy of Bermuda grass. In contrast, the conditions of the fairways this June will not be as nice as last year due to the process of transitioning out the ryegrass from this year’s overseeding.

The process of transitioning out the ryegrass actually starts in March with a low-rate herbicide application that slows the growth of the ryegrass. The herbicide is very specific to ryegrass and has no impact on the underlying Bermuda grass that is beginning to green up. By slowing down the growth of the ryegrass, the Bermuda grass has less competition for sunlight, nutrients and water to come out of dormancy more efficiently. In June, a different low-rate herbicide that eliminates ryegrass and Poa annua is applied.

Mechanical processes are also performed to thin out the ryegrass. Verticutting is performed in multiple directions to open up the canopy. Deep-tine aeration relieves compaction, which opens areas for the Bermuda grass to spread. Irrigation is closely monitored for moisture levels; too wet creates a salt buildup that thins Bermuda grass, and too dry causes Bermuda grass to desiccate and die.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com

We are now in summer season rates as we come to the end of our fiscal year on June 30. The membership renewals for annual 9- or 18hole memberships begin July 1. First time annual members who join by June 1 can play 13 months for the price of 12 months.

Here are some benefits of becoming an annual 9- or 18hole member.

• 18-hole memberships receive 9-day advance tee times

• 9-hole memberships receive 8-day advance tee times

• Unlimited driving range privileges.

• Receive 25% off Pro Shop apparel and 10% off accessories, equipment, shoes, hats, and golf balls (excluding sale items. No discounts available to the online Pro Shop).

• Members' and SCOV residents’ guests receive a discounted golf rate.

• Members receive a complimentary guest pass on their account.

• Annual 9- or 18-hole memberships may split their payment and pay half in July and the balance in October. Whether you’re living here year-round or seasonally, we offer a Hybrid Membership with a reduced daily golf fee. It is a lower annual fee, and you pay as you play. It does not include the rental cart, tax or range privileges.

June 1 through September 17, we are offering a Summer Golf Pass for $197. It includes golf and cart fee of $25 for 9- or 18-holes with 7-day advance tee times.

Despite all these efforts, the fairways will have thin brown areas following aeration and topdressing in June. This happens when one grass is being removed to encourage another grass to fill in. By July, the fairways will return to good condition again.

Play Thu. morning

theodore.r.milton@gmail.com

Hello to the hardy NineHolers who will be here this summer. We are now on the summer schedule, which means regular league play with a shotgun start on the first Thursday of the month, followed by the next three Thursdays playing a skins game.

The skins games are set up by tee times starting at 7 am with a total number of players set at 24. However, if more sign up to play, the tee times will extend to accommodate the additional players. As we learned last summer, the skins game favors those players who are not the steady players but those who have that one great hole far exceeding their handicap. The charge to play skins is $5 and the charge for the league play on the first Thursday is $4.

Remember, you do not need to be a Views passholder to join the league and play on Thursday. You simply need to pay the standard greens fee for that day. So, if you are looking for something to do on Thursday mornings, join the league and come out and play. And as always, “Half the time, twice the fun.”

"A picture is worth a thousand words."

Photography Club members know that this quote is an understatement, for photographs often tell stories that can't be described in words.

For some time, the Photography Club used an outdated projector to project images for review and evaluation. The equipment no longer met the club's needs, so the club applied for, and received a grant from your Foundation for a new projector, laptop computer and accessories.

“The new system has exceeded our expectations,” says club president Ed Caine. “Thank you for your support.” Examples of the Photography Club members’ work adorns the walls in SCOV buildings. Ansel Adams would be proud.

To be included in the Foundation’s FY 2022-2023 Honor Roll of Donors, make your contribution by June 30.

The Bistro Coffee & Wine Bar

Announces a Convenient New Digital Gift Card

Did you know that you can now purchase a digital gift card that can be used at The Bistro? With the "card" on your phone, you don't need cash or a credit card to get that quick latte after a meeting or class.

To get a digital card, stop by The Bistro. Tell the barista how much money you want to put on the "card." They will enter either your phone number or email where you will receive the card information that you can save to your phone's wallet, then all you do is have the barista scan the card on your phone to pay for your beverage. You can even give a digital gift card to a friend. Give the barista the phone number or email to send it to, and that person will receive a text or email message. The gift can even be personalized with a message such as "Happy birthday. Enjoy a treat from The Bistro." Right now the digital gift card is the only option, but we're looking into physical cards for the future.

We have a special deal this month, for one day only: Wednesday, June 14, buy a digital card valued at $65 for only $50! That's about four free lattes. Come see us and enjoy the lattes, wine and snacks while you visit with a friend and get a great deal on a digital gift card only at The Bistro.

Clay

So what do potters do with all the clay that results from trimming pots, broken greenware (oh darn) and just plain leftover clay? We recycle it, of course.

The recycling process begins by covering a five gallon pail of clay with water for four or five days, during which time it turns to mush. Then, the water is drained and Kentucky Ball Clay is added, firming up the mixture. Next, the clay is spread on a plaster board to dry. It helps to draw deep lines through the slab to make sure the clay dries underneath. When ready, five pounds of the recycled clay is put into bags and sold for a nominal amount.

This type of clay is an economical choice for all members and especially for our new members as they go through orientation. Currently, Pam Curren is the volunteer for this task of recycling clay. Thank you Pam.

Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace and make creative arrangements for your home.

Knit and Crochet

Jane Fairchild 520-909-5069 janemail11@yahoo.com Mon., 2:30-4:30 pm, Activity Center/Hohokam

If you have a knit or crochet project, or would like to learn, come join us. An ongoing group project is making crocheted mats out of plastic shopping bags. You can participate in this project by cutting the bags into strips, stringing the strips into plastic yarn (plarn) and/or crocheting them into mats.

If you wish to donate bags, flatten clean Fry’s, Safeway or Walmart bags and stack them by color. You can then fold all the stacks over into one; no need to fasten them together. This effort on your part greatly streamlines the cutting and crochet process. Do not include newspaper bags as they do not work for this project. Bags can be dropped into a basket on Jane Fairchild’s front porch any time at 1750 E. Crown Ridge Way. ode

Second Fri., 9 am, Catalina Vista/Pusch Ridge www.scovaz.com/clubs/modelers

While the miniatures we build showcase our artistic skills, they also represent part of the real world, not just objects but real things having stories behind them. Our club frequently invites speakers who can share that history with us.

In April, Brad Watson, son of our treasurer, Robert Watson, shared the story of Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands where he once worked. This small and remote dot in the Pacific was the site of 23 atomic bomb tests beginning in 1946. We learned about the impact on the people who had lived on the island, results of the tests using mothballed U.S. Navy ships, and the ongoing impact on the ecosystem of this group of islands. Our speakers are announced in "This Week in SCOV" and our monthly meetings are open to all.

Our sculpture pieces are in the glass case and window inside Catalina Vista, a showcase outside of the Library and displayed inside the Library.

Gene is one of the original founders of the club. He is a past president of the club and has held the office of treasurer for several years. The club thanks Gene for all he does to keep the club supplied with materials needed for sculpture and for being the go-to person for brazing.

We want to express our gratitude to Jean Sax for leading our group for some 20 years and thank her for all the time and work she put into the group. She promised that she will not be just taking a new seat in the audience, but will guide us when her experience is needed and also volunteer for tasks. I am pleased to say that we have had another hand raised to help in the co-president position when she returns in the fall. I will wait to disclose her name until her return. If anyone else is interested in such a position, please let me hear from you.

Summer has arrived, and we are all busy at home and in the shops preparing for the winter festivities of 2023. The shelves are bursting with quilts, soft toys, wooden toys and items to sell at the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Gift Shop. We are planning for Kuddles for Kids, the toy distribution and adopt-a-child programs. We have a pair of members who have volunteered to handle the food service at the Arts and Crafts Fair as a fund raiser for Seniors for Kids. Thank you to Joyce and Chic. Our plate seems pretty full, but the cause is very worth it. Living is giving and giving is living. Please have a delightful summer.

The summer months are here. It is quieter in the Sewing Room, as some clubs take a break and return in the fall. It might be time to consider getting trained to be a monitor. Contact Chris Ludwig.

It is also a good time to be reminded that everyone using the room during this time:

• Must be an HOA resident or have renter status and be current on dues: $5/year.

• Must have a monitor present when using the room. You can check ahead at www.signup.com

• Must have had room orientation and training on the machine you wish to use. If either is needed, please call Leslie Monroe 509-947-5669 for Pfaff machines or Sue Lane for serger machine training.

The requirements listed are in place to keep everyone safe and protect our SCOV club status. Enjoy the season and have a wonderful summer.

Those of us who are in the Sewing Room during the summer months are few but mighty. The needs of the community do not stop. We work in the cool, air-conditioned comfort of our room in the Artisan Center. If you would like to donate, we still need used sheets in reasonable condition that haven't been used to cover cacti. The need for remade crib sheets and twin fitted sheets from used sheets remains high. Thank you to those who have donated fabric and sheets to our many causes.

Cheer Bears

Pat Norton 480-993-8762 panpan9803@yahoo.com Wed., 1-3 pm, Artisan Center/Sewing

We really enjoy spending time together and are now distributing the Cheer Bears to their new homes. We continue to meet every Wednesday, 1-3 pm, Sewing Room.

We have placed our Cheer Bears in the Gift Shop to be sold and all proceeds will go to replenishing our supplies and keeping the little bears marching. Stop by the Gift Shop and browse and maybe purchase a bear to put a smiling face on a little one.

We are happy to accept donations of flannel and polyfil to keep our assembly line running at top speed and get plenty of these bears on the shelves.

We always look forward to seeing your smiling faces.

It gives me a good feeling when my van is full of pet beds that we made here to distribute to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. The workers at the Humane Society are always glad to unload the beds and they are grateful for the beds for their to-be-adopted dogs and cats. We recently delivered 29 pet beds. If you haven't seen how nice the beds are and how cheerful everybody is that makes them, we invite you to the Sewing Room any Tuesday afternoon. If you would like to join us, the dues for Thimblelenas are only $5 for the year.

Tue., 9-11 am, Artisan Center/Sewing www.scovhookers.weebly.com

The Tapestry Hooking and Fiber Arts group meets on Tuesday mornings in the Sewing Room. If you are interested in our group, stop by to see what we do. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People involved in other arts using fiber are invited and encouraged to join our group.

The picture illustrates two felting projects by Carol Sallmann. Felting is just one of many fiber arts. There are two processes for felting, one is referred to as “wet” and the other “dry.” Carol used the dry or needle felting technique for her two projects. The materials used are wool roving and a felting (barbed) needle. Felting is the process used to create a textile by combining and compressing loose fibers. The technique is to push and pull the needle through the roving to tangle or intermingle the fibers to create a matted piece of material/felt.

Shop hours: Mon.-Thu., 9 am-4 pm, Fri., 9 am-noon Meetings first Mon., 3:30 pm, Artisan Center/Lapidary Room

Laurie Volocyk is our featured artist this month. She joined the Silversmith and Lapidary Club in January of this year, and under Ric’s tutelage, cut, shaped and polished her first cabochons. "I recently decided to make hearts from a piece of chrysocalla I had purchased at the Gem Show. After cutting my stone in the lapidary, I fine-tuned the shapes on the finishing saw, followed by a lot of polishing. The end result is six hearts, perfect for creating two sets of earrings and pendants." Laurie is one of our many outstanding new members who are becoming skilled in lost wax casting and lapidary.

SCOV residents interested in joining should visit the shop and speak to the monitor about scheduling training. New member training is held monthly on the second Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jane and Bill Honeywell have been attracted to the medium of glass for many years. They attended an exhibition of the great glass artist, Dale Chihuly, and were quickly “hooked.”

Interestingly, Jane calls herself a serial hobbyist. She belongs to the Tapestry & Fiber Arts Group in SCOV, and loves quilting, painting watercolors and spent years creating glass mosaics.

Bill enjoys woodworking and has a present goal of completing a glass sunflower garden in his backyard. Because of their allure to glass, Jane and Bill joined our glass club shortly after moving here. They enjoy the camaraderie and look forward to continuously learning new glass-making skills shared by the expertise of members. Future glass goals for Jane include fulfilling numerous requests from relatives. Bill’s future glass goals include a kinetic art mobile. Come and visit us soon.

For sky watching, both Venus and Mars will pass by Messier 44, the Beehive Cluster, in June before coming together at the end of the month. Venus is also at its evening best on June 4.

we leave each meeting feeling that we have grown through the experience of thinking hard and sharing our ideas.

We will return to the pleasure of stimulating discussions in October. Social science research has shown that those who engage in substantial conversations report relatively high levels of satisfaction with life. We find that, even if we come to no definitive conclusions about the material we’ve read,

We are continuing our regular meeting schedule over the summer as an opportunity for us to gather together in small groups in the Genealogy Library to share our questions, quandaries, quarry hunts, quick tricks, quantum leaps, quizzes and more. Our topic for the Tuesday, June 13, discussion is “How Do I Get Started or Where Do I Go Next?” Whether you’re a total novice or have been researching for years, come to get or give advice to each other while connecting with other members. If you aren’t already a member, you are welcome to come check us out.

Poets Corner

Sharyn Rafieyan 520-331-1092 srafieyan@comcast.net

Mon., 10 am-noon, Zoom

What if you didn’t marry your high school sweetheart? What if the South had won the American Civil War? What if we cared for our neighbors and they all returned the favor?

Christa Lubatkin, long-time Poets Corner member, addresses the familiar theme of “what if” in the lyrical language of poetry and her own evocative style, adding just a smidgeon of hope to the many possible sorrows:

what if no gracious clouds / sail across blue skies / and mountains are lost in choking fog

what if tears dry up / and oceans no longer hold / the salt of our lives

what if your arms stiffen / and your smile leaves a somber face / in the dirge of these days

what if requiems stall in mid-air / elegies’ last laments lay barren / on chapel floors / would love’s winged heart still soar

Poetry offers so many doors to open and explore. Join our weekly Zoom meetings from wherever you spend the summer.

Plans are to continue periodic iPhone and Android classes as well as many more technical classes like “How the Internet Works,” “How Cell Phones Work,” and maybe a little more on TV alternatives and smart home applications. Don’t forget, these classes are indoors and are a less boring alternative to hibernating in our houses. See you there if you have a hankering to expand your tech horizons.

With seasonal folks leaving for the summer and many people vacationing, the park is getting quieter. But even in the heat of summer, the dogs enjoy the open space to run, explore and socialize.

Groups use the space in early morning and early evening. Both the dogs and their humans enjoy the cooler times. Less socialized dogs or those who can’t make the group gatherings, come at other times to enjoy the park, too. We are grateful to have a place to allow them freedom and running space all year around.

Cycling renews us. Getting outside in the clean air, taking in the incredible mountain views and biking with friends are some of the reasons we choose to live here. Oro Valley is one of the greatest biking destinations in the country. Wide streets, gorgeous bike paths, clean air and desert beauty draw cyclists from all over the country.

Cycling here is a dream come true for members of the Sun City Vistoso Cycling Club (VCC). With over 250 members and organized group rides four days per week, there’s a ride for everyone.

We support three local charitable organizations: Wheels for Kids, El Grupo and the Interfaith Community Food Bank. VCC volunteers build or repair and deliver over 400 bikes to kids in the Tucson area every year through their Wheels for Kids (WFK) program. WFK’s 40 volunteers have delivered over 4,600 bikes to charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Casa de los Niños and More Than a Bed. New volunteers are welcome.

For more information or to join, please visit our website. Ride. Have fun. Be safe.

Birders Group

Peggy Smith 520-344-0991 pdsaz@aol.com www.scovbirding.wix.com/birdersgroup

Colorful hooded orioles find their way to SCOV every April along with equally colorful Bullock's orioles. Craving sweets, orioles enjoy raiding hummingbird feeders and eating any jelly that might be set out for them. There are technically five species of orioles here in Arizona, although two are rare and only the two mentioned are likely to be seen in SCOV. Their rich song and

chatter are easily identified by those in the Birding Group who will interrupt any conversation when unusual bird songs enter SCOV space. Want to learn more?

We are a 110+ member, activity-oriented group. All SCOV residents are invited to join us on our field trips to learn more about the birds in Arizona (we carpool). If you are interested in joining us, contact Peggy (above) to be added to our mailing list so we can keep you up to date on the trips. These tend to be more variable as the hotter weather approaches and we begin our summer hiatus.
