As a child, I remember picking up all the magazines in my St. Louis, Missouri home, cutting out pictures and words that appealed to me, and then pasting them on paper and cardboard in creative designs. As I grew older, I let go of my childhood interest in collages and began to actually read those magazines. I’ve accumulated a hill of them in my bedroom because of this. When I began considering my career path, I reminisced over my past hobbies. My interest in magazines was one that stuck with me. I made up my mind that I would one day own a magazine. I just never thought that day would come so soon. It was often that my collages as a youth went unnoticed. While I considered it art, others thought it as just “cutting paper.” Since the beginning of Sculpt I’ve striven to offer the larger world a window to peer into the little corner where emerging artists live. After all how often do we flip through the pages of magazines and see faces that we know all too well? But at Sculpt, we’re here to offer readers a different approach. As any new product, I wanted Sculpt to be innovative and genuine. The blank cover of the magazine was my first decision in doing this. It wasn’t that we forgot to put a photo there, or even that we ran out of pictures. It was to instead precisely represent our mission statement that reads: “Sculpt magazine exists as a canvas for emerging artists to freely and creatively volunteer their talents. Together the compilation of talents help to define the genres of art while each artist helps one another towards the evolution of a personal masterpiece. The primary obligation of Sculpt is to form a gateway to its readers as it tours them through an art museum on pages.” With a small staff (three women) and limited resources, Sculpt made its hardest attempt at giving a true dedication to the arts and artists that are truly inspirational, and deserved to be noticed. From musicians and fashion designers, to poetry and painters, Sculpt hopes that its first issue gives you an up close and personal view of artists destined to be great. Though my hopes of owning a magazine have manifested, I still hope that it reaches readers in high and low places. My vision is to one day own a magazine empire that exists nationally and internationally, and who knows, that may be closer than I expect as well. But for now, I hope that if anything the first issue strengthens your appreciation for the arts, and leave you craving for another. So, I ask that you settle into a comfortable chair, sit your feet on the table, and enjoy the pages of S C U L P T.

Above: Turner with Amber Rose Left: Turner used watercolor to underpaint the portrait of Rose. She also used acrylic and spray paint to complete the painting.

Right: Turner’s masterpiece will be displayed in Amber Rose’s Philadelphia home.

Turner first heard about Rose's interest in finding young artists with innovative, fresh art to display in her newly furnished home in Philadelphia from a friend on Twitter. "I just decided to take a chance and paint a picture of her, submit it and see what happened. I wasn't expecting money, I just thought it would be a great opportunity for exposure." Upon meeting her, Turner had no idea what to expect from Rose as far as attitude but to her surprise, "she [Rose] asked about school and everything. I was actually surprised by how cool she was. I really wanted to ask about Kanye but I just left that one alone," said Turner. Ever since Turner was in high school she held a deep love for art. The story goes that Turner requested to be in a painting class, and from there her art teacher asked to see a portfolio of her work. Needless to say her art teacher was impressed instantly, and in turn Turner was offered a spot in the advanced class right away. When asked who was one of her main motivators she quickly replied "My stepfather." Dennis Edwards, former member of the Motown R&B group, The Temptations. "He constantly tells me to go for my dreams and to not be afraid to do something off the beaten path." Turner says that what makes her stand out from a crowd of artists is her ability to be rebellious. "I don't just use one medium of paint. I mix acrylic and graffiti paint altogether and create my own medium to make my art" She currently attends University of MissouriColumbia and upon graduating still plans on pursuing a career in art. Turner says, "I believe anything can be art especially fashion. My job is to get my audience to see in my paintings, the beauty of its artwork." We've been told ever since we could walk to get out of dreams, reach for the stars, the sky is the limits and bus load of other anecdotes but we rarely ever here the success stories after these dreams are made reality. Alison Turner is one of those aspiring dream catchers. -Randi Kahill

In a world of commonality, it’s rare to find something to call your own. When Jason Chambers decided that he was over with being a mere copy of repeated wardrobes, he began his own clothing line: ISOFRESH. He explains why he considers himhim self the freshest of them all.

lmost everyone has looked into their closet and simply grown tired of looking at the same things that everyone else seems to be wearing. Jason Chambers, St. Louis native, was once faced with this issue. Unlike most people who experience a change of their taste in apparel, Chambers decided to create his own clothing line rather than simply attaching himself to common brands and fads. His line, “I So Fresh is influenced by his artwork and the apparel industry, as well. The name of Chambers line is not only fitting for the clothing but also for him, as a person. He has very fresh, innovative ideas and is pursuing a career in graphic design at Columbia College Chicago in order to make these ideas come to life. It is very common to hear someone express his or her interest in making it into the music industry. Chambers shares a love for music and hopes to excel within the music arena. However, he is not pursuing a rap or singing career, but instead hopes to design album covers and other promotional materials for musicians. His ambitions illustrate how he continues to think outside of the norm. Chambers hopes to open up a store within the next year to showcase his designs. One of his long-term goals is to open his own graphic design company. Chambers is traveling to other metropolitan cities and being exposed to new places, cultures, and walks of life, but hopes to contribute his talents to his hometown. Thus, his first store will be located in St. Louis and he will gradually expand into other markets. Chambers was unsure of how to really describe his art but managed to say that his style is very diverse. One thing is for sure, his pieces are a work of art and are definitely a must have. St. Louis can look forward to hearing more about Mr. Chambers in the near future as he continues to positively represent for the artistic community. -Alexandria Seay

Seventeen-year-old Bryce Williams is a natural. The young fashion designer out of Saint Louis, Missouri has no formal training but he won’t deny his talent as an artist. “ I have a love for drawing and painting, so I received the idea to put clothes on the bodies I used to draw,” says Williams. He began designing clothes when he was only twelve years old, and hasn’t stopped since. In 2009, Williams introduced his clothing line, Bella, in the LaHa Fashion show by Lilian Tine. The line consists of dresses and gowns targeted towards women ages 18 to 27. Williams describes his designs in two words: funky and classic. Believe it or not Williams says he is most inspired by his grandmother. “She [my grandmother] represents a recognized presence in my life. I’ve always been taught from a young age to be an individual, like do it for yourself and nobody else, even when its goes to the clothes I wear, its not outrageous, but because I’m 17 people don’t expect such quality from me,” says Williams. Currently, Williams is trying to sell his clothes to buyers and boutiques. He would like to put his clothes in stores like, Urban Outfitters and/or Macy’s. In the future, the young talent wishes to work with Beyonce’ and Celebrity Designer Zac Possen. -Aris Williams

CBSJ NEWart Ent, once known as the Retail Junkiez, is a group of young men who are working to break into the music industry and to create a name for themselves and for the city of St. Louis. The members of NEWart Ent, (Chris Smith, Bari Allen, Ralo) have been building a fan base locally and recently had a mixtape release at I AM SNKY, a clothing store in their hometown. The three young music artists are headed to Columbia College Chicago to study various aspects of music, to ensure their success with their music careers. After chatting with them for a while, I noticed that Chris Smith, who goes by C. Smi, used the word “official quite frequently. This catchphrase that he uses describes NEWart and the following interview exposes a few aspects of their voyage to become what they deem to be “official.
