Sr Dolores Renkel OP
S
ISTER Dolores Mary Renkel, an Oakford Dominican congregational prioress from 1980-92, died on June 19. Born Johanna Juliana in Schweinheim, Germany, on August 4, 1919, she had an early longing to be a sister and missionary in Africa. She entered the novitiate in 1936 in Volkersberg, and made her first profession on July 3, 1937. She was missioned that same year to our motherhouse at Oakford, KwaZulu-Natal, at the age of 18. There she made her final profession on August 5, 1940. Her strong calling to serve in her order’s mission among various ethnic groups brought her to South Africa, yet obedience called her to give 23 years as formation directress and 12 years as congregational prioress. In the span between these positions she was given only six years in direct ministry to the people at the Dominican school
and convent in Empangeni in the heart of Zululand. Sr Dolores’ gift of music was discovered early on her arrival in Africa. Thus, in addition to her academic studies, she was qualified in piano teaching and choir training. She served as liturgist at the motherhouse for over 20 years. After Vatican II, she composed suitable music for the liturgy in English and Zulu. In her years as congregational prioress, Sr Dolores recognised how important it was for sisters in

leadership to receive team training, skills development, and to engage resource persons from outside the congregation. She also encouraged opportunities for study and renewal. Sr Dolores had the stamina to confront and name difficult situations, searching for and speaking the truth. After completing her term of office as congregational leader she was grateful for the invitation of the sisters of the United States to stay with them. She left to join them on September 24, 1993. It gave her a new lease on life. In December 2004 she had a mild stroke, and after she broke her leg in January of 2012 she moved to San José in California. In July 2012 she had a festive jubilee celebration of 75 years of vowed life. In the course of her journey of 95 years, Sr Dolores was a living history book of her congregation and a woman of wisdom.
