The parent selects the provider. Child care can be in the home or a daycare facility or can be provided by a relative or friend who is a legally licensed exempt provider. Payment is made directly to the provider at an established market rate. The parent must pay the difference between the provider’s charges and the market rate.

Victim assistance, housed in the prosecutor’s office, provides guidance through the criminal justice system for people affected by a criminal act. The victim advocate exists for all crime victims to provide information about rights, moral support and a list of resources available to help them in their need. For the community, the advocate can provide information about protective orders, the criminal justice system, and domestic violence in the form of brochures and presentations. Assistance will be given for victims to apply for compensation funds and protective orders. Referrals also will be given to help victims live safely and independently. Services include a safe shelter as well as outreach programs in Brown County and at the shelter site. Other services offered include peer counseling, crisis intervention, support groups, safety planning and intervention. Turning Point provides referrals for financial assistance, housing, employment and children’s programs at the shelter. Turning Point will arrange for transportation for victims to the shelter in emergencies where they can stay up to 30 days, longer in exceptional cases. In addition, services are offered with lethality assessment, legal advocacy, court accompaniment and protective orders. Education at the community and social levels include work in primary prevention, and programs at the junior high schools on unhealthy relationships, dating and domestic violence.

God’s Grace has a program called “on the road again” at which clothing inventory is set up at Brown County Intermediate School so students can find supplies and clothes for school. Students in higher grades can be matched with a volunteer by appointment and will generally receive services at the literacy coalition office. The group also provides materials, resources and support for parents and primary caregivers of children ages birth to 5 through Ready to Learn and Ready to Read programs. Adults wanting help with reading or math can also be matched with a volunteer tutor and meet by appointment. Those wanting help with GED assessment or tutoring should first contact the Brown County Career Resource Center.
