HOME GAMES IN CAPS * - denotes Landmark Conference game # - at Hilton Head, S.C. The Landmark Conference is a Division III athletics conference that was formed in the winter of 2005 in an effort to bring together colleges and universities from the Mid-Atlantic region with similar philosophies regarding the role of athletics as part of the overall collegiate experience. On November 30, 2006, it was announced that The Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian College, Susquehanna University and The United States Merchant Marine Academy had formed a soon-to-be-named Division III conference, with The University of Scranton becoming the eighth member in November of 2006. The most literal inspiration for the Landmark Conference's name comes from the many well-known physical landmarks of the MidAtlantic region encompassed by the conference. The name also reflects the significance of the institutions' decision to align themselves with other colleges and universities of similar size, educational philosophies, and high academic standards. It highlights the conference's intention to stand out not only in athletics, but also in academics, emphasizing educational achievement and the important role played by athletics in the undergraduate experience.

HEAD COACH KEITH HETSKO

THE UNIVERSITY

OF

SCRANTON MEN’S TENNIS TEAM

Keith Hetsko has wasted little time restoring the men’s tennis program at The University of Scranton.

ROYALS' MEN’S TENNIS 2012 The following spring, in Scranton’s first as a member of the Landmark Conference, Hetsko guided another young team to its first conference post-season tournament appearance since 2000. In addition, four of his players’s garnered all-conference honors, including then freshman Carl Caceres, who was selected the conference’s rookie of the year. This past season, freshman David Teres joined Caceres as a Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year recipient.

His love of the game and keen eye for talent have already paid major dividends in just five seasons. His overall record of 49-30 (.620), includes what is believed to be a school-record 15 wins in 2010 and berths in the Landmark Conference championship matches each of the past two seasons. In addition, the Royals have made four straight Landmark Conference tournament appearances.

Hetsko joined the Royals’ coaching staff after serving as head men’s tennis coach at nearby Marywood University from 1994 through 2006. He led the Pacers to Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) championships in 1998 and 2006. In his final season, Marywood finished with a 14-3 overall record, including an 8-0 mark in the PAC.

In his first year, in 2007, he took over a roster made up almost entirely of freshmen and led the Royals to five victories, more than twice their output from the previous season. He also groomed the game of first-team all-Freedom Conference selection Scott Melideo.

A certified United States Tennis Association (USTA) official, Hetsko is a 1978 graduate of Bloomsburg University with a degree in sociology. He has served as an umpire for the U.S. Open four times (2005-2007, 2009) and many other professional tournaments.

SEASON OUTLOOK

THE UNIVERSITY

OF

SCRANTON MEN’S TENNIS TEAM

T

he University of Scranton men’s tennis team fell short of its goal of a Landmark Conference champion ship last season, suffering a narrow 5-4 loss at Drew University in the conference championship. While a quick glance at this year’s roster reveals a young team — there isn’t a single senior — the Royals have lofty expectations heading into the spring. Scranton graduated just one senior last spring, but he was a noteworthy performer. Carl Caceres was a standout on and off the tennis court, going 12-5 in singles action, incluing 5-1 in Landmark Conference play to help earn second-team all-conference honors. He also attributed for seven doubles victories, including a 3-2 mark in conference play. Caceres was also lauded for his work in the classroom as he was awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the first student-athlete in University of Scranton men’s tennis history to receive such an honor. While saying goodbye to Caceres was not easy, his departure is softened by the return of 10 players who contributed to last year’s squad that went 9-5 overall and 5-1 in conference action.

T

he 2012 squad features seven juniors all of whom saw action last season, including tricaptains Bennett Kelley, Tim McGurrin and Joe Morra. The trio of McGurrin, Morra and Jonathan Russo lead the junior class after playing key roles on last year’s team. McGurrin earned first-team all-conference in singles and doubles after he posted an 11-7 mark in singles, including 7-1 at No. 2 singles. He was unbeaten in conference action, going 6-0. McGurrin was also a key contributor in doubles play, teaming with sophomore David Teres to go 14-5, including 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Morra went 12-1 overall in singles action, including 9-5 at No. 4 singles and 5-1 in conference action. He also had a part in nine doubles victories with various partners, including four in conference play. Russo solidified the bottom third of the Royals’ lineup by going 10-5 in singles action, including 9-4 at No. 5 singles and 5-1 in conference play. He also had a hand in two doubles victories, one of which came in conference play. Kelley returns after a sophomore season in which he teamed with fellow junior Mike Pannone to go 10-6 in doubles action, including 4-2 in conference

ROYALS’ MEN’S TENNIS 2012 action and a pair of wins in the playoffs. Kelley had 11 wins overall in doubles action and added a pair of singles victories during the season. In addition to his strong work in doubles, Pannone went 9-7 in singles play, including 6-4 at No. 6 singles and 3-1 against conference foes in the regular season. Juniors Devin Patel and Robert Law also return after gaining valuable experience in both singles and doubles last season.

S

cranton also has four sophomores back who contributed last season, led by Teres, who was named first-team all-conference in singles and doubles as well as Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year after going 14-5 in singles action, including 7-2 at No. 1 singles and 5-1 in conference action. And he teamed with McGurrin to go 14-5 in doubles action, including 4-1 in the conference. Brian Williams went 4-2 in singles play as a freshman, including a win at No. 6 singles in his lone conference match. He also posted a conference win in doubles with fellow sophomore Devin Patel. Patel posted a pair of doubles victories and also competed in two singles matches in his first year. Joe Mastroianni also returns after a freshman season in which he went 1-1 in singles action and also competed in a pair of doubles matches.

T

he Royals also welcome four newcomers this season. Sophomore Jay Patel joins his brother, Devin, on the squad. Both, along with McGurrin, are products of the strong tennis program at nearby Scranton Preparatory. Jay Patel did not see action during the fall season. Also joining the team is a trio of freshman — Ryan Bair, Harry Bonet and Kevin Prendergast. Bair went 2-0 in singles play and added a doubles victory during the fall. Bonet and Prendergast each competed in one singles match during the fall, with Bonet picking up a victory.

THE UNIVERSITY

OF

SCRANTON MEN’S TENNIS TEAM

Intercollegiate athletics are an important component within a comprehensive learning experience at The University of Scranton. Over the last 31 years, the University's student-athletes have achieved an impressive record: 84 NCAA tournament appearances, three national championships (two in men's basketball and one in women's basketball), 54 all-Americans, 25 academic all-Americans and 15 NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients.

The University's heritage traces its roots to 1888 with the founding of St. Thomas College by the Diocese of Scranton. The school received its university charter in 1938. The Society of Jesus began administering the University in 1942, when Scranton became one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

The University consists of four academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences, Kania School of Management, Panuska College of Professional Studies, and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education. Full-time undergraduate enrollment for the 2011 fall semester is 4,069.

The University awards bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of programs in business, communication, education, health sciences, humanities, and natural and social sciences.
