Known for his highly detailed and realistic Western scenes, many of them filled with people in large panoramic images, Russ Vickers was born in Paris, Texas. He served in the Marines in World War II and as a combat artist during the Korean War. Like many G.I.s after the wars, Vickers headed to California, where he was a technical illustrator for the aerospace industry. Vickers would become a full-time artist in Arizona, where he painted action and drama with extreme levels of detail. His work was also featured in the 1970 John Wayne film Chisum

Altermann Galleries & Auctioneers, Scottsdale, AZ, 2012

After short stints in Montana, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, New York and Texas, 21-year-old Fremont Ellis visited Santa Fe, New Mexico, for the first time. It transformed him. The young selftaught artist, who had to visually memorize colors he had seen on Albert Bierstadt paintings at the Met while he was learning to paint, was only in Santa Fe for three years when, in 1921, he helped create Los Cinco Pintores with Jozef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Willard Nash and Will Shuster. The modernist-leaning group didn’t last long, but it’s influence on the Southwest was immense.

Although firmly linked to Roswell, New Mexico, where he spent the majority of his life, Peter Hurd also had a fascination with Arizona, particularly the southern portion of the desert state. The artist, who studied under N.C. Wyeth and married his daughter, Henriette, would later produce work for Arizona Highways and other publications. The San Xavier del Bac Mission is located in Tucson. It was founded in 1692, though construction wasn’t completed until 1783. Today it is the oldest intact European structure in the state, and is still operating as a Catholic mission.

George Phippen is widely celebrated today as one of the founders of the Cowboy Artists of America, and its first president, and yet Phippen barely had time to enjoy the group’s success before he died in 1966, a year after the CA’s founding. Phippen’s larger career stretches back much further: he was a combat artist for the U.S. Army during World War II, he worked in illustration after the war and then, in 1948, he started making oil paintings for Christmas cards and calendars. He was also instrumental in bringing bronze foundries into the Prescott area of Arizona, where he lived and worked.

Horse Wrangler comes with a signed letter from Mrs. George Phippen, dated 1975, that notes the painting was created in 1955 for Brown & Bigelow Calendar Co.

Living in Montana has given me the opportunity of traveling through many small towns while enjoying the colors of autumn in the afternoon. I especially like to watch the way the warm light bounces off the cool colors of the snow. I have always enjoyed witnessing the life and culture of the people in the places I have been. My objective in this painting is to share with the viewer the warm feelings I have experienced portrayed in an early 19th century small town setting. – Gary Lynn Roberts

Literature:

Dave McGary: American Realism in Bronze, Michael Duty, McGary Studios, Ruidoso, NM, 1997: p. 41, 46, 121.

Part of Dave McGary’s famous Upper Missouri River series of bronzes, Iron that Walks is full of the little details that bring the sculptor’s works to life. From the individual beads in the shirt and bear claws in the necklace to the subtle imperfections on the feathers and the bladed edge on the war club. No detail is superfluous in a McGary bronze. “Like [Charles M.] Russell, he is an artist from outside the culture who has been accepted and given the privilege of passing on the details of a still-vibrant world,” Michael Duty writes in Dave McGary: American Realism in Bronze. “Works like Touch the Clouds, American Horse and Iron that Walks all serve as links from the past to the present and into the future. They offer the viewer and collector a way of understanding another culture.

Glenna Goodacre: Sculpture, Encantada Press, Santa Fe, NM, 2009: p. 172.

Sometimes titled Banished From His Land, this Glenna Goodacre bronze was originally sculpted in 1977. From the front, the Native American subject looks peaceful and serene, as if his head is down in silent prayer, but the back side shows his hands are bound, which alters the entire mood of the piece. “[Native Americans] were left helpless to lead any kind of life as they knew it…,” Goodacre wrote about the piece in 2009. Banished would later inform Goodacre’s He Is, They Are, a 10-foot-tall monument of the same subject from 1991.

Along with Fritz Scholder and Earl Biss, John Nieto is recognized as part of a rising group of Native American modernists whose works are finding renewed interest from a new generation of collectors. Born in Texas with Hispanic and Native American heritage, Nieto drew inspiration primarily from Fauvism, a French art movement from the early 20th century that focused on bold colors and some of the painterly qualities of impressionism. His work was respected in the Southwest, but also internationally after shows in Tokyo and at the Grand Palais in Paris. Prior to his death in 2018, Nieto would have an annual show in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

After a long day in the saddle two cowboys are taking a break to water their horses where the river is wide and shallow. From the timber across the river they hear the bugle of a monarch bull elk as he gallantly guides his harem through the autumn willows on the opposite shoreline. The elk, with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, start to scatter up the river to safer areas. Like any king this bull announces his disdain for the intrusion and will start again to work tirelessly regathering the herd. The helpless cowboys can only watch as one of natures' spectacles play out in front of them comfortably from their leather seats. No doubt the memory will ring in their ears for years to come. – Chad Poppleton

Oil on canvas

Estimate: $16,000 - 24,000

Crow modernist Earl Biss began his art career as part of the inaugural class at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He later studied under painter Fritz Scholder, Hopi jewelry icon Charles Loloma and sculptors Allan House and John Chamberlain. Biss would produce works in two distinct styles: loosely painted modernist landscapes and highly stylized figures. This painting, Spirits of the Stick Indians, shows a crucial part of Crow mythology. The Stick Indians, also known as Nirumbee or Awwakkulé, were “little people” warriors who appeared in the dreams of Plenty Coups, the visionary Crow chief. The Stick Indians are still prominent figures in Crow culture and mythology. They are viewed as fierce fighters, but also as the keepers of Crow wisdom.

Watercolor

Estimate: $30,000 - 50,000

Provenance:

Montoya Family, Denver, CO, ca. 1950 by decent in the family, 2005

A volatile and often controversial figure known for speaking his mind and challenging the government and religious institutions, Diego Rivera was a hugely influential figure in Mexico in the first half of the 20th century. He spent time with revolutionaries, traveled the world, married Frida Kahlo and helped establish Mexico’s great mural traditions after the Mexican Revolution ended in 1920. Today his work is collected around the world and in many of the great museum collections, including at the Met, the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian.

While Rivera painted many subjects, including portraits and landscapes, many of his best works were of blue-collar people such as miners, farmers, industrial laborers and factory workers. Many experts have suggested that these images of diligent workers have links to Rivera’s Marxist politics, but the artist also painted simple peasants, female nudes, still lifes, Mexico’s Indigenous people and many children, all of which he depicted with lush color and simple, elegant forms. More than anything, Rivera celebrated his Mexican heritage and the country he loved. “When art is true, it is one with nature,” Rivera said. “This is the secret of primitive art and also of the art of the masters—Michelangelo, Cézanne and Renoir. The secret of my best work is that it is Mexican.”

Bronze, cast 4/20

Estimate: $8,000 - 12,000

Provenance:

Private collection, San Diego, CA

Present owner

Chiricahua Apache sculptor Allan Houser comfortably moved between realistic figures and ultra-modern forms. Sheltered is an example of the latter, with its smooth finish, tightly folded forms and two round voids meant to represent mother and child nestled within the blanket. In the 1992 book Allan Houser, author Barbara H. Perlman compares it with a similar piece, They’re Coming. “The impression of mystery and fragmentation which contradicts the secure, fully explained certainty of Houser’s realism is strongest in such apparently everyday subjects as They're Coming, that provocative image of simplified form and curiously undefined face,” she writes. “…Sheltered share[s] a similar ambivalence, having crossed over into a space where questions are not promptly answered and imagination is free to interpret forms in more ways than usual.”
