Driving results that allow children to thrive

(2010-2012 DATA)

• More than 20,000 high school students and their families have received information, support, and resources to increase on-time graduation. • More than 42,000 hours of professional development have been deployed, strengthening the skill base and competency of early childhood educators. • More than 600 children earned preschool scholarships, helping to get students off to a strong start with a solid academic, emotional, and social foundation.

Enrollment in quality early childhood education programs improves student performance all the way through on-time high school graduation by building a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning.

We support five local high school FERCs (Eldorado, Clark, Sunrise Mountain, Western, and Silverado) serving more than 46,000 students in grades 9 – 12. Teams of community volunteers, school staff, and administration deliver services, support, and guidance to students at-risk of not graduating and their families. With greater engagement, support, and resources, students are better prepared to meet on-time graduation requirements and enter a career or college and succeed. United Way offers scholarship tuition assistance for children ages birth to 5 years that reside with families working full-time and living within the Federal Poverty Guidelines. More than 350 children qualify each year to attend one of the United Way partner Child Development Centers. Each Center has trained and qualified staff to ensure young children enter K-12 ready to learn. The families pledge 100 hours for volunteerism and training to more effectively foster the adult-child connection that inspires children to achieve.

United Way funds the nationally recognized Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts programs to enhance young children’s learning by training childcare providers to use performing arts strategies that teach basic academic and life skills. The teaching artists work with families and community partners to enhance education through Art, Music, and Movement. United Way offers a myriad of professional development opportunities including incentives to pursue higher education degrees and certifications, workforce development training, and mentoring and support to increase the core skills and competency of our childcare providers. United Way provides the training and tools to assess children and support school readiness curriculum and instruction in active learning environment. The assessments are used for lesson planning, communication with families, and a successful transition from Pre-K to kindergarten for all children. Staff at the Centers receive mentoring and tools to ensure teaching strategies are developmentally appropriate.
