It was a busy, professionally-enriching summer for Seven Hills teachers! Thanks to new endowment funds secured by The Critical Assets Campaign, Seven Hills has doubled its annual budget for professional teacher training. We now have the resources to provide each year at least one professional development experience for each of our teachers! We are pleased to share just a few examples of our teachers’ professional development experiences this summer. Math Department Head and Upper math teacher Anne Ramsay, Upper math/science teacher Dr. Lenore Horner, and Upper math teacher Anna Works-McKinney attended the 28th Annual Anja Greer Mathematics, Science and Technology Conference at Philips Exeter Academy for one week. The primary emphasis of the conference was the role of technology in today’s and tomorrow’s mathematics and science curricula. Dr. Lenore Horner presented at the 2012 GeoGebra Midwest Conference. Upper math teacher Melissa Khoo attended the weeklong conference of the Joint Statistical Meetings of the American Statistical Association in San Diego. Upper science teacher Barbara Scarr participated in an AP Biology workshop at Ball State. Upper Spanish teacher Teresa Barden went to Harvard to take “Teaching Foreign Language with Technology.” Master Chef Jimmy Gherardi and Food Service Director Jan Alford have been busy this summer, sharing Seven Hills’ healthy lunch program with national audiences. Jimmy, Jan, and Doherty Cafeteria staffer Barbara Christie attended the School Nutrition Association Annual Conference in Denver. She also completed the Future Galileo’s program at the Cincinnati Observatory. Patty said, “I attended three classes that covered the uses of telescopes and programs that support the teaching of the solar system and space. I then taught three programs that focused on solar viewing which included participating in teaching the public at the Observatory during the Transit of Venus in June.” Doherty Unit II teacher Joan Claybourn and first grade teachers Kirby Schuchter and Amy Kulhavik participated in the weeklong course at Springer School and Center, “A Multi-Sensory Approach to Reading Success (MARS).” Lotspeich PE teacher and Athletic Coordinator Katie Forster continued her work toward an M.Ed. at Xavier with the courses, “Crisis Intervention in Schools” and “Special Education: Identification and Issues.” Lotspeich Spanish teacher Megan Hayes participated in the International Forum on Language Teaching, a hands-on conference showcasing strategies of comprehension-based language instruction, in Breckenridge, CO. Lotspeich fourth grade teacher Melissa Woodard continued her M.Ed. graduate work at Xavier with the courses

“Teaching Reading to Children with Special Needs,“ “Children’s Literature for Middle Childhood,” and “Phonics and Foundation of Literacy.”

Teachers create innovative curriculum The Critical Assets Campaign also endowed an exciting program to provide summer grants to teachers who create innovative curriculum units. The emphasis has been on collaborative projects that engage students in exploring the global community, in innovative thinking or creative problem solving, or in using educational technology for research and presentation. Since the program’s start in the summer of 2010, nearly 100 grants to design innovative curriculum units have been awarded to our teachers. Several of our teachers’ Summer 2012 curriculum grants are described in our publication, Semester in Review August 2012, at http://www.7hills.org/ yeartodate.
