I wish to welcome all students back to school for what promises to be a very exciting term. I have enjoyed getting about with the students and watching them in action this week by attending the K-6 Cross Country 3-5 May 2019 Carnival, after school sport training on both campuses and Middle and Senior Royal Bathurst Show School Chapel Services. I wish Year 8 all the best as they go on their canoeing The Scots All Saints Cattle Team will be adventure next week in the Kangaroo Valley. This is a wonderful opportunity competing at the Royal Bathurst Show. to enjoy the outdoors in a pristine environment. I hope they are challenged and enriched by this opportunity and build skills in teamwork, resilience and the appreciation of the beauty of our environment.

I wish to thank all the students, parents and staff who were able to support the College at the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service in Bathurst and Lithgow last week. The involvement of the new College was extensive and, at the risk of missing someone, I mention and I wish to thank the following staff and students for their involvement: • College Captains (Gabrielle Boshier and Bradley Gardiner) for representing the College in the laying of the wreath at the 4:30 am Service.

• Gabrielle Boshier for her exceptional Commemorative Address at the ANZAC Service. It was a tremendous honour for Gabrielle to be afforded this opportunity as Bathurst Youth Mayor to reflect on the significance of ANZAC Day. It was a well-researched and presented address and it was interesting, relevant and greatly appreciated by those who were present.

• Captain Russell Settright and Mr Justin Adams with the Cadet contingent and the Cadet leaders for their very dedicated and serious approach to this task.

• Mr Jon Clipsham with his leadership of the Combined Schools’ Band with a very strong Scots All Saints representation to lead the school students from all schools.

ANZAC Day usually falls during the school holidays so I am very grateful for the commitment of the students and staff to this very important local event.

The College Cattle Team enjoyed a huge week at The Royal Sydney Show at the end of last term. This is the highlight of the year for members of the Cattle Team as they have been preparing the steers since September.

Once again I write to congratulate all the students, Mrs Dawes and her many parent helpers for their outstanding success. I enjoyed the main judging day, as I have done every year, and I was very proud of the students’ commitment, hard work and outstanding success with many ribbons received and some exceptional achievements.

I am very proud of the outstanding achievement of our Cattle Team students and I encourage everyone to read the detailed report later in The Roar.

I wish all our Agriculture students the very best as they represent the College at the Bathurst Show this weekend by either showing cattle or in their involvement in the Young Rural Achievers. Scots All Saints College will have a display tent located near the Cattle and the Animal Nursery and we encourage parents and friends to pop in for a chat.

The Winter Sports season begins in earnest this weekend and I encourage parents to get out in support of our new College teams. The new sporting strips look fantastic and will be easily recognisable on the sporting fields for their brightness and colour. It is a home Rugby fixture against Blue Mountains Grammar this Saturday on the Scots Campus Main Oval so my main attention will be at the Rugby. Over the next few weekends however, I look forward to attending the netball, hockey and soccer fixtures when the rugby teams are playing away matches. I ask all students to clearly follow the dress requirements for watching sport as clearly explained to students on Assembly this week. It is very important that we represent the College well both as players on the field and spectators off the field.

Junior School Spirit This week our students are focusing on the character strength ‘Fairness.’ Fairness is all about treating people the way we like to be treated. It’s about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and being able to reason with empathy and compassion. You might like to talk to your child this week about some examples of people being fair.

THRASS THRASS is the acronym for teaching Handwriting, Reading and Spelling Skills and is the system we use at Scots All Saints College for teaching students about the building blocks of learning to read and spell. It involves developing student understanding of the 44 phonemes (speech sounds) and the various spelling choices (graphemes) that represent these sounds.

Each week your child will receive a spelling list for homework that focuses on one or more of these phonemes as well as a range of subject based and high frequency words. Talking with your child about the meaning of their words, identifying the phonemes (sounds) in the words, using the words in context and practising writing the words will help to make them a more competent and adventurous speller.

Soloist’s Recital - Junior School Several students will perform in the Junior School Soloists’ Recital at 4:00 pm next Tuesday 7 May. This is an excellent opportunity for students to perform for their peers, family, teachers and friends. The concert will be held in the Performance Room at the Music Centre.

NAPLAN 2019 In May 2019 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Year 3 students will take part in NAPLAN on the following days.

Week 1 Term 2 Welcome back to a new term. Term 2 is only nine weeks long so it will go quickly, especially quick considering the amount of exciting events and activities we have planned. I trust all of the students have had a restful break and their batteries are re-energised for another busy term of learning.

Next Tuesday 7 May all of our Year 8 students will be heading off to Kangaroo Valley for four days of canoeing, camping, and hiking. It is sure to be a worthwhile experience as it will take a great deal of teamwork and patience from everyone to navigate the challenges that lie ahead. I have the privilege of attending this camp with the students and I am certainly looking forward to spending time with them in such a picturesque and beautiful natural environment.

Mother’s Day Morning Tea We invite all of the mothers of our students in to share morning tea with their children on Thursday 9 May. Kindergarten to Year 6 Cross Country Carnival Congratulations to all of the students in Kindergarten to Year 6 who participated in the Inter-House Cross Country Carnival this week.

There were some outstanding performances but most importantly, everyone tried their best and showed wonderful House spirit. Congratulations to Mawson House for winning the House Competition on the day. Good luck to the students who have been selected to represent the College at the Western Associated Schools (WAS) Cross Country Carnival next Friday 10 May at Orange Anglican Grammar School.

Senior School Welcome to Term 2! I trust everyone had a super break; it’s been lovely to see our students back refreshed and settling smoothly into their various routines. We have another busy term ahead of us and I would like to remind parents to keep their eye on the school calendar to ensure you don’t miss any of the exciting events planned.

Parent/Teacher Interviews Year 9 P/T Interviews are scheduled for this Friday 3 May. The interviews will take place in the Aikman Hall and signage will be in place to assist parents who may be unfamiliar with the Scots Campus. Interviews will run from 3:306:00 pm and 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Please note that there is a scheduled meal break for teachers between 6:00 – 6:30 pm.

Students still on campus at 5:30 pm will be directed to the Dining Hall where they can be supervised by the Boarding staff until their lift arrives.

Naplan Year 9 will be involved in NAPLAN during Week 3 (1416 May). Please note that Friday (17 May) is designated as ‘catch-up day’ for students who may have been absent on the day of a previous NAPLAN test. These are the only dates that NAPLAN is conducted.

Parent Weekend and Foundation Day Chapel We look forward to having parents visit the College over the weekend of 25-26 May. The Foundation Day Chapel will be held on Sunday 26 May. Please note that this is a compulsory event in our College calendar and students are to attend in their formal uniform.

Year 12 P/T Interviews are scheduled for Friday 24 May. Parents will be emailed with instructions on how to book appointments.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL INDEPENDENT LEARNING CENTRE What?

The ILC aims to help all students in the senior school with individual work and provide assistance in any area of school and creative interest. Specialised external competitions and enrichment opportunities are promoted through the ILC and made available for all interested students.

How?  Help with individual subjects, assessments and examination   

After School Collection of students I would like to bring to your attention that the official playground/bus duty at the end of the day concludes when the last bus leaves, usually around 5:15 pm. Increasingly we have had a number of day students waiting to be collected after this time and in some instances students and the teacher on bus duty have been waiting till 6pm. Parents may not be aware that our duty of care responsibilities mean we cannot leave students unsupervised.

We understand that situations arise when a parent may be late and to that end I would ask that you contact the school if this is the case.

ANZAC Day Parade – Cadets and Pipes and Drums We thank the boys and girls who represented the College Cadet unit and the Pipe and Drums at the ANZAC Day parade in Bathurst. We are grateful that our students are willing and able to be part of such an important local community and nationwide day of recognition. Our Pipes and Drums again did a stellar job leading the parade. Well done students.

Cadets Leadership Program - Terms 2 and 3 Cadets for Terms 2 and 3 is for students who want to be College cadet leaders in the future. We will be focusing on training them to be the leaders for the 2020 Year 9 program.

It is not compulsory for students to do Terms 2 and 3 however it is a very good way for students to gain skills in leadership which will be a great asset for students wishing to take on leadership roles in the school in the future. Completion of the leadership program will also allow them to go to Australian Defence Force Cadets camps (Australian Field Exercises - AFX) in September holidays – these are free camps and again great leadership opportunities for our students. The leadership training should also be able to be counted as Duke of Ed hours.

A lot of the training in Terms 2 and 3 will be focusing on theoretical aspects of the Australian Army (history, procedures, codes of conduct, etc.) drill

(marching and formations), field craft (knots, using camping equipment, navigation, map reading, etc.). We hope to have a bivouac at school for one night to practice putting up tents, experiencing camping outdoors, cooking with stoves, eating from ration packs, doing night time activities, etc.

RFS Cadets Our rural fire service cadets require three more training sessions to complete their training. Mr Pitcher and his helpers from the O’Connell Brigade will be resuming the program next Monday from 4:45 pm. Some of the training involves theory work so when it gets dark the students will use the Sports Centre classroom. The Field Day and Graduation will not be held until October. This is where our students take their skills into a competition against other schools. We are planning to run some revision early in Term 4 to prepare the crews for this fun day.

Winter Sport commencing this Saturday We are very excited that we will see our new college winter sport teams out and playing this weekend. We are thankful for the support that our parents and students have given to getting to this point and are also appreciative of the work of our teaching and coaching staff in preparing teams and ploughing through the administration.

We remind students and parents of the codes of conduct for appropriate behavior on the field/ court and the sidelines.

A copy of the ISA Code of Conduct for Spectators is included below.

3.1 Control of spectators is the responsibility of the school official with whom the spectators are associated. Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or officials.

Genuine concerns should be addressed to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken.

3.2 Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents. For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.

Similarly, sledging is totally unacceptable.

Barracking should be for the School only.

Negative comments are totally unacceptable.

3.3 Good play by either team should be recognized by applause.

3.4 It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age.

3.5 Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence or rough or illegal play.

3.6 Coaching by spectators from the sideline is to be actively discouraged by the school official with whom the spectators are associated. Spectators shall not interfere with the progress and/or conduct of a game, including encroaching on the field.

3.7 Adults must remember that games at school level are organized for the benefit of the students concerned and not for adults.

3.8 Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the home school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators. At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.

3.9 Adults, parents, students and others are expected to set an example by their self-control and deportment at matches.

3.10 Normally alcohol should not be consumed at sport fixtures.

Weekend Sport Uniform Expectations We draw your attention on this page to the uniform expectations of our students for weekend sport fixtures.

Weekend sport uniform expectations for students As we fully commence winter sport season we ask for the co-operation of students and parents to dress appropriately at weekend sport fixtures. We want to present our College and its students consistently at sport fixtures on weekends and we expect students to comply with the following uniform expectations.

Students playing netball, hockey and football are expected to travel to and from sport fixtures in College sports uniforms. College tracksuit pants and the soft shell jacket are expected when it is cool. The sports cap or bucket hat are recommended when not playing fixtures.

Students playing rugby in the 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s are expected to arrive and depart from the College in their playing uniform with the College tracksuit and soft shell jacket for when it is cold. Boys in the Opens rugby teams are required to wear town leave College uniform (trousers, shirt, tie and blazer with black school shoes) to and from the College. The sports cap or bucket hat are recommended when not playing fixtures.

All students attending rugby fixtures as spectators are required to wear their sport playing uniform with the College tracksuit pants and soft shell jacket or winter coat for when it is cold weather (as they are about to play or have finished playing their weekend match).

Students who attend rugby fixtures as spectators who do not have any other sporting commitments on Saturday are required to wear town leave College uniform (trousers or kilt, shirt, tie and blazer with black school shoes). The sports cap or bucket hat are recommended for sun protection.

Our Opens rugby boys who wish to go and support netball, football or hockey players before or after their match on a Saturday and after their season has finished (end of Term 3) are required to wear town leave College uniform (trousers, shirt, tie with black school shoes).

Students are not to wear casual clothing on the sidelines when watching Scots All Saints College teams, whether they be hockey, netball, football or rugby. They are there representing as ambassadors of the College therefore they need to dress as if they are part of the College.

Students who do not comply with these expectations will receive disciplinary actions including detentions.

We have a HUGE site (10m x 15m) on the grass area at the right side of the Cottage Gate entrance, on the way to the animal nursery! We invite you to have a stall in the HEALTH HUB precinct at the Royal Bathurst Show.

We are inviting health service providers to hold an interactive stall to showcase your organisation or business, and provide a service to patrons.

We will be delivering Community Health Checks and a Teddy Bear Hospital, ran by Western Sydney University medical students and staff, along with interactive demonstrations and activities. We are interested in having a wide range of service providers on hand to provide the community health information, services and activities.

Junior Basketball Premiers Congratulations to the Mighty Tigers who played in the Junior Basketball Grand Final late last term.

This team consisting of six very enthusiastic players really made their presence felt in their competition throughout the season. Their skills, finesse and knowledge of the game improved from week to week. Aside from the Tigers’ skills on the court, their success can be attributed to their ability to play as a team. I am very proud of how they developed such mature ‘team work’ skills over the season as it doesn’t matter how good your individual skills are, the key to victory is working together.

Brain Bee 2019 NSW State Finals Congratulations to Year 10 student Callum Duncan-Keen who has qualified to progress to Round 2 of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge 2019 – the NSW State Finals.

Callum is in the top 10% of over 700 students across NSW who competed in the first round of the challenge.

Callum has been invited to attend a full day of activities at the School of Medical Sciences, University of NSW. As well as participating in two rounds of live questioning to determine who will become the State champion, students also experience a day filled with activities to educate them about neuroscience research.

This includes an interactive physiology workshop, a guided human anatomy tour of the Museum of Human Diseases and a series of presentations from doctoral students.

Well done Callum on a great achievement.

Mock Trial team win It was a win in Wellington for the jubilant Scots All Saints Mock Trial team on Tuesday. The team remains undefeated after a victory in Round 2 of the statewide competition.

Competing against St Mary’s Catholic College from Wellington, the students from Bathurst were the defence team for the Mock Trial.

The case was centred on an alleged common assault between a wealthy businessman and a student protester in Sydney’s CBD. The Mock Trial defendant was successfully acquitted because of the excellent courtroom performance of the Scots All Saints team.

With Robert Jeffries and Simi Atluri as barristers, Oscar Stocks and Morgan Watts as witnesses and George Butler as the court officer, the team impressed Mock Trial magistrate, Mr Howard Hamilton.

Other team members from Scots All Saints also travelled to Wellington to watch the Mock Trial unfold.

HICES Netball Gala Day The 12 Blue netball team had a successful HICES Netball Gala Day. The girls played hard throughout the day and it was evident that their skills and confidence developed with every match.

It was an important first hit out for the girls giving them time to get to know each other’s strengths on the court and they should be congratulated for the way they represented the school and conducted themselves throughout the day.

NSWCIS Football trials Congratulations to Max Hemsworth who was selected to play in the Primary HICES football team. The HICES team competed in the NSWCIS football Championships held late last term.

As expected, the competition was very tough and HICES pleasingly finished the day in third position. Max was in excellent form and scored two terrific goals for HICES within the one match.

Congratulations Max on being a fine ambassador for the College.

NSWPSSA achievement Congratulations to Ruby Thorne and Chontelle Burgess who made it all the way to NSWPSSA for swimming. In the Independent sporting system this is very difficult to achieve so both girls should be very proud of their achievement.

Ruby qualified for the 11 Years 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly and after her excellent swim in the heats Ruby progressed to the finals, claiming 8th and 10th position respectively. Chontelle qualified for the 9 Years 50m freestyle and after her amazing preliminary swim she too swam in the final finishing in 7th position. To be in the top 10 for your age in NSW is just remarkable.

Sydney Royal Easter Show 2019 The Scots All Saints Cattle Show Team exhibited 22 steers at Sydney Royal Easter Show. Four of these steers were home bred by The Scots School in 2018 with the remaining steers bred by our amazing supportive stud breeders from all over the state.

The team showed 17 purebred Limousin steers, 5 purebred Angus Steers and 1 Blue E trade steer. 30 students prepared these animals beginning during term 3 2018. The team was capably led by Rosie Webb, Bailey Ryan, Lizzie Woodhouse, Jacob Cranston, Stephanie Aprasi, Will Mitchell and Zoe Roberts who are our Year 12 team members.

We had an amazing show with fabulous results. A summary of the results are as follows:

The involvement of Scots All Saints College at the ANZAC Day Commemorative Services in Bathurst and Lithgow was extensive.

Thank you to all of the students, parents and staff who attended and marched with other school groups to represent the College including the Performance Band, Cadet team and leaders, Pipe Band who led the march for the returned servicemen and women.

A Celebration of Student Artworks on display at the IPSHA Travelling Exhibition and Royal Bathurst Show Visual Arts in the Junior School (K-4) and Middle School (5-8) had a fabulous start to 2019 with Term 1 student artworks being displayed for exhibition in the Kemmis building following the Easter Hat Parade.

Students, staff and parents had the opportunity to view this exhibit and appreciate the talents of all Junior School students' (K-4) Term 1 artworks. Parents were thrilled to see their children’s work on display with each class or year group focusing on a key artistic practice or influence.
