COUNTDOWN TEAM SCOTLAND NEWSLETTER Issue 26 – Summer 2017

Youth Games athletes gather in Stirling

Bahamas beckons as 41 athletes named for Team Scotland 2017 With the sixth Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas fast approaching, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) announced the 41 athletes selected for their first international multi-sport Games. The athletes, 15-18 years, will compete in seven of the nine sports on the programme: Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Cycling, Judo, Swimming and Tennis. These Games, which will be held from 18-23 July, will see a number of firsts, with Judo making its Youth Games debut. Six Scottish judoka will step on the mat, including British Cadet Champion and Matsumae Cup gold medallist, Louis Saez. Beach Volleyball is also included for the first time, with Emma Waldie and Jennifer Lee selected, who were both part of the Scottish indoor volleyball team that took bronze at the U19 European Championships Small Countries Division last year. Megan Gordon becomes the first female boxer to compete for Scotland at any Commonwealth Games, with European Junior Championship medallists, Sam Hickey and Lewis Johnstone also included in a talented Boxing squad.

Athletics name a strong line-up of 11 athletes, including European Youth 1500m bronze medallist Erin Wallace and fellow Scottish record holders; Alessandro Schenini - U17 indoor long jump; sprinter Adam Clayton - U17 60m and Adam Scott – U17 1500m. Eight swimmers are aiming to make a splash in the pool, five of whom; Anna Fleming, Isabel Jones, Luke Robins, Scott McLay and Thomas Beeley, recently competed for GB at the European Junior Championships. The swimming team also includes Team Scotland’s youngest athlete for these Games, 15 year old Roisin Ramsay. In Tennis, British U18 Doubles Champion, Alexandra Hunter and Hamish Stewart, winner at the U18 Nike National Tour Finals, will both play Singles and Mixed Doubles. Cycling makes its first appearance since 2011, with Rhona Callander, Dylan Hughes and Stephen Dent set to compete in both the Road Race and Individual Time Trial.

Team Scotland 2017 will depart for Bahamas on 14 July, ready to make the most of their first multi-sport Games experience and aiming to emulate the success of previous Youth Games teams. Congratulating the athletes on their selection, CGS Chair, Paul Bush OBE said: “I would like to welcome each and every one of these young athletes to Team Scotland and congratulate them on the hard work and dedication that lies behind their selection. “The Commonwealth Youth Games is also an excellent development opportunity for staff with the relevant skills and experience to step up and take on first time roles or more senior positions in the multi-sport Games environment. I am delighted to see Colin Gregor in the role of General Team Manager and several others who have also represented Team Scotland as athletes, now returning in staff positions and sharing their invaluable experience. “I wish the team all the very best for their final preparations and I look forward to seeing our athletes compete with pride for Team Scotland in the Bahamas.”

Gold Coast on track for a great Games Team Scotland takes to the beach Team Scotland 2018 hopefuls from a range of sports gathered Portobello, Edinburgh for a Beach Volleyball challenge. They were marking the all-important 1 year to go milestone, until the next Commonwealth Games get underway in Gold Coast, Australia.

Her Majesty the Queen hands the baton to Louise Martin, CBE, CGF President

Launch of Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay marks Commonwealth Day celebrations Commonwealth Day celebrations in London this year had a distinctly Australian flavour, with the official launch of the Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay marking the start of the official world-wide countdown to the Games. On the historic forecourt at Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II heralded the start of the relay, by placing her ‘message to the Commonwealth and its athletes’ into the distinctive loopdesign Baton which then set off on its journey around the globe. Thie 2018 Relay will cover a record 230,000km over 388 days, as it journeys through the six Commonwealth regions, to its final destination, the Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April next year. The Baton will be in Scotland 2228 August and an exciting range of celebrations are being planned with a strong youth and sport theme, showcasing our rich heritage, links to Australia, the Commonwealth and Glasgow 2014 legacy. Beach Volleyball (men’s and women’s Pairs) is new to the Games and is designed to show off the Gold Coast’s ‘trademark’ beaches and Scotland is aiming to be represented in both events. Despite us having some of the finest white sandy beaches in the world, unlike Australia, Scotland is not often viewed as the ‘natural home’ of Beach Volleyball. However, Scottish Volleyball is thrilled to see the sport included on the programme for the very first time and is making great strides with preparations. Two new permanent courts have recently been installed at Portobello Beach and leading the charge for Scotland is the London 2012 women’s volleyball captain of the indoor game, Lynne Beattie and partner and former British champion, Melissa Coutts. The pair have refocused their training on the pairs, beach version of this exciting sport.

Eilidh Doyle and Clyde welcome Borobi to Glasgow

The arrival of the Baton will bring the Games one step closer and is a fantastic opportunity for the nation to get behind Team Scotland and show their support. Ahead of the landmark celebrations in London, Gold Coast mascot ‘Borobi’ visited Glasgow and hooked up with Team Scotland mascot, Clyde and Scottish track star Eilidh Doyle, to find out what made the 2014 Games such a huge success. The day included visits to meet youngsters at Caledonia Primary School for an ‘Aussie style’ dance-off, before meeting gymnasts from the Glasgow School of Sport at the iconic ‘Big G’. The day concluded with a visit to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome to meet prospective Team Scotland cyclists.

Excited about the new challenge in her life, Beattie, who also works as the sport’s regional development officer, said: “I would love the opportunity to represent Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, something I never thought would happen. Last year when we heard that Beach Volleyball was being included, we really started to work hard. Mel and I both work, so we have to fit in training sessions in the cold and dark or whatever the weather. “We’ve set Gold Coast as our goal and we hope the win at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Sydney recently, is just the start of it. We’re going to play in as many events as we can this summer and try and qualify for the Games.”

the heart of the Games. It gave those attending their first Games an insight into the Village layout, the size and location of Scotland’s accommodation, relative to key facilities such as the transport mall and the dining hall. A mock-up apartment was also viewed which gave an indication of bedroom layout and space.

Successful planning visit held With Gold Coast 2018 now within touching distance, and the appointment of individual sport team managers concluded, a Team Scotland delegation with representation from 16 of the 18 sports headed to Australia in May, to progress detailed planning for the Games. The programme enabled the sport team managers and general team management to examine the Games organising committee’s (GOLDOC) preparations and develop further Scotland’s own support programmes. These will include a fantastic pre-Games Team Camp on the Sunshine Coast in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and the University of Sunshine Coast and an overnight visit was made to the Twin Waters Resort, where the team will be based. An important feature of every Games is Scotland House, providing a ‘home from home’ for Team Scotland partners, sponsors, family and friends to gather and enjoy the Games together. Organised in conjunction with VisitScotland, it will also host a number of Team Scotland and business functions. Scotland House is ideally located at the Mantra on View Hotel in Surfers Paradise, close to the tram line which runs from the

Games Village, enabling easy access for athletes to meet family and friends. During the visit we met two of our partner schools on the Schools Connect programme, Coolangatta State School and the Australian Industry Trade School in Robina, who will provide great local support. A key part of the programme was the visit to the Games Village, which be will

Fiona Lothian, Triathlon Sport Team Manager commented: “The visit gave me a good understanding of how the Games will operate from both Team Scotland and organising committee perspectives and how the support programmes will be delivered. The GOLDOC staff we met gave a great insight into how their planning is going and we were also able to discuss from our viewpoint, what will make the Games a great experience for the athletes. We will now be feeding the information back to athletes and coaches to assist in their final preparations over the next 11 months, so they are ready to perform to their best for Scotland.” With its timing less than a year out, the site visit was invaluable, enabling sports to finalise their planning in advance of athlete selection later this year, as well as the opportunity for team staff to get to know each other and unite under the one Team Scotland banner. Summarising the visit, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, Jon Doig OBE said: “We have a great team staff committed to delivering the best for our athletes. GOLDOC’s preparations are progressing well to ensure these will be an excellent Games and this productive site visit means we will be ready for them. “With the selection period well underway and a new CGF quota system limiting the places available for the first time in a number of individual sports, the fight for places will be stronger than ever. Those who are selected will benefit from our best prepared support team ever, who are focused on creating the best possible environment to enable them to excel, as we strive for our most successful overseas Games performance.’’

Did you know? Amongst the other firsts for Gold Coast 2018 is the parity between men’s and women’s participation, with the same number of medal events for both sexes. Likewise the Para-Sport programme has been given a further boost from the enhanced programmed offered by Glasgow 2014, to a total of 35 events across six sports: Swimming, Athletics, Cycling, Lawn Bowls, Triathlon and Powerlifting.

CHAIRMAN’S VIEW

Board Update

PAUL BUSH, OBE It has been another busy year for CGS, as we have continued to work hard to widen the relevance and role of the organisation outside of the core business of Games time planning and preparations.

Margaret Ann Fleming

Jennifer Livingstone

Bruce Cook

New Board members appointed at AGM At the Commonwealth Games Scotland Annual General Meeting in Stirling in May, two new Board members were elected following voting by the 28 member sports. Margaret Ann Fleming, Chief Executive of Scottish Volleyball was reappointed for a second four year term. Margaret Ann is also on the Board of the European Volleyball Confederation and Chairs the Disciplinary Commission of the World Volleyball Federation. She has a particular interest in strategy, policy development and governance issues and brings a perspective from smaller Commonwealth Games member sports and those new to the Commonwealth Games programme. Jennifer Livingstone joins the Board for the first time, bringing a wealth of expertise from her full time role as Opportunities & Equalities Manager with Scottish Disability Sport. She is also the Scottish National Boccia squad coach and has been appointed to the Team Scotland 2018 general team management, responsible for the team’s operation in the Village. In addition, Bruce Cook, was appointed to the Board in the specialist role of Commercial Director, following a successful period working with Commonwealth Games Scotland over the last year.

4

Bruce is an independent consultant specialising in strategy and measurement for sponsors and rights holders. He is currently a Director for SMG Insight, one of the UK’s leading sport and sponsorship research firms, and was previously Head of Sponsorship for The Royal Bank of Scotland Group where he served from 2008 to 2014. Bruce’s career in sport/marketing spans 20+ years and includes ProServ (professional tennis), the US Olympic Committee and the NFL Europe League. Prior to joining RBS, Bruce was General Manager of the Scottish Rocks, Scotland’s only professional basketball team.

CGS Chair, Paul Bush OBE, congratulated them all and said: “I am delighted to welcome back Margaret Ann, as well as two new faces to the Board, in Jen and Bruce. They bring the welcome addition of some specialist skills in the important areas of Para-Sport and commercial and I look forward to working with them over the next four years. I would also like to thank Jackie Davidson from Scottish Golf for her significant contribution to Commonwealth Games Scotland, over the last ten years.” Member sports were also given an update of the organisation’s preparations for Bahamas 2017 and Gold Coast 2018, as well as on the process being conducted by the CGF for a replacement host for the 2022 Games. Members were reassured to hear that there is considerable interest in hosting what will be the XXII edition of the Games and that the selection process is now well underway. Commenting on 2022, Paul Bush said: “We are confident that there are some strong options on the table for the CGF to consider. We wish them well in the selection of a host who will be able to build on the success of Glasgow 2014 and the momentum of what looks set to be a spectacular Games in Gold Coast next year and continue to take it to a new level. “With a curtailed preparation period for the new host, it is vital that the CGF move swiftly and surely to bring this selection process to a successful outcome for the Games movement. We wish everyone all the very best with this critical work over the next few months and look forward to an early conclusion.”

Our re-brand is proving a success and is being used to promote our new events in line with our brand values of proud, united, ambitious, inspirational and inclusive. We are starting to implement new marketing and commercial strategies and are focused on attracting new commercial income streams and whilst this takes time, we are starting to see some traction. The second Team Scotland Scottish Sports awards is approaching in September and we look forward to building on last year’s exciting new format and celebrating the achievements of Scots on the national and international sporting stage, including our 2017 Youth Games team. The Team Scotland Series got off to a strong start this year and many thanks to member sports who are part of this innovative collaboration. We are excited about the benefits this can bring in the long term and hope that commercial interest will follow. The challenges facing us all in the current political and economic climate must not be underestimated. We look forward to discussing this and other key issues at our CEOs’ and Chairs’ event in the next few months, to ensure we are collectively well positioned and maximising the benefits that sport can and does bring to our country. Finally, with the Gold Coast 2018 build-up into its final nine months, I urge you to work closely with us, to ensure Scotland can deliver its best ever overseas Games performance, which would put us all in the ideal position to capitalise on these other exciting opportunities.

Team Scotland Series making an impact Early in 2017 the Team Scotland Series was launched. A groundbreaking collaboration between Team Scotland and 12 Commonwealth Games sports, it links domestic Scottish Championships under the banner of Team Scotland, with cross-promotion bringing each event to a wider audience, inspiring more Scots to excel. Events in Judo, Athletics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Boxing, Hockey and Netball have been held so far, with championships in the sports of Swimming, Shooting and Beach Volleyball still to come in 2017, along with further events in Athletics and Cycling.

game changer in terms of the people we can reach. Being part of Team Scotland is about more than just the Games teams and the Team Scotland Series shows to all boxers the part they play as wider Team Scotland members.”

Already the Team Scotland Series, with an overarching brand, has seen increased exposure and social media coverage of each sport, along with an innovative partnership with BBC Scotland that has increased event coverage on radio, television and online. A particularly exciting aspect has been the start of a live streaming platform on the BBC website, the first event of which took the recent Scottish Elite Boxing Championships to a new level and it is hoped more of the Series events will be covered in this way. Boxing Scotland Chief Operating Officer, Fraser Walker said: “Being part of the Team Series with other sports and in particular the live streaming was a real

Jon Doig OBE, Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games Scotland said: “The Team Scotland Series allows us to not only showcase the sports under the overarching Team Scotland brand and increase awareness, but has provided a core thread that pull the events together to show partners and the wider public, not only the athletes looking to make the Commonwealth Games in 2018, but those who will be our future team members.”

Delivering peak performance with CGI Wheelchair racer, Meggan Dawson Farrell continues to play a leading role as the Team Scotland athlete ambassador for team sponsors CGI. In June, the vivacious 24 year old from Tullibody, Clackmannanshire gave presentations to CGI staff at their Glasgow and Aberdeen offices, detailing just what it takes to be an elite Para-Sport athlete and the planning and sacrifices required to deliver success on the track for Team Scotland.

Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and outlined how staff could get behind the athletes. In the process, they examined the parallels in building and developing successful teams and the ability to maximise performance, whether it is in the sporting arena at a major event, or in the commercial sector, delivering the type of major infrastructure projects managed by CGI. It proved to be a valuable and enjoyable shared experience.

We are also pleased to announce the support of world leading swimwear brand TYR as the official supplier to Team Scotland. TYR who also supply British and Scottish Swimming as well as a host of other leading swimming nations, will supply their latest cutting edge technical swimwear products to both swimmers and divers at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

We are delighted to welcome Glasgow based dentists, Park Practice, who have become the first ever dental services supplier to Team Scotland. Principal dentist, Mike Blackie, launched the association at the Youth Games Team Camp in June, providing an informative briefing for the young athletes about the important part dental health plays in their overall health and wellbeing and how it is an essential aspect of their preparations ahead of international travel to competition.

Jon Doig OBE, Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games Scotland said: “We are delighted to have the Park Practice and TYR join our family of Team Scotland supporters. We know we have the support of the Scottish public as we strive for our best ever overseas Games and having both local and international brands join us shows the wide appeal of our fantastic athletes.”

This will be followed by engagement with selected athletes for Gold Coast 2018, to ensure they are in peak dental health and those in contact sports have the best possible dental protection.

The Commonwealth Youth Games How it all began The Commonwealth Youth Games concept was created by Scotland as a development opportunity to give athletes under 18 years of age an international multi-sport Games experience. It aims to bridge the gap between young athletes competing in their own sports specific events and the often daunting first experience of a senior multi-sport Games.

Bahamas 2017 It is now the turn of the Bahamas to host the 2017 Youth Games and it is set to be the largest Youth Games to date, with up to 1300 athletes expected to compete in the capital Nassau, venue for the prestigious World Relay Championships in athletics in 2015. It will be the first time a Commonwealth Games event has been hosted in the Caribbean for over 50 years.

The first Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000 as part of Scotland’s Millennium celebrations, endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Federation. Athletes from 14 countries competed in Edinburgh and the event quickly proved to be a great success and has been held ever since. The Youth Games now attracts entries from all 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth and has been the ideal introduction to multi-sport Games for a host of international stars who have gone onto Commonwealth, World and Olympic success.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on 18 July and will be followed by five days of competition from 18-23 July. Of the nine sports on the programme, Judo, Beach Volleyball and Beach Soccer will make their Youth Games debut, and there is a return for Cycling, last held in 2011.

Where it has been held The second Games were held in Bendigo, Australia in 2004, then Pune, India in 2008. It was then agreed that smaller nations, who were unable to host the main Games, would be encouraged to bid for the Youth Games. The Isle of Man hosted the fourth Youth Games in 2011, to avoid clashing with London 2012 and Samoa were hosts in 2015.

Scotland’s track record Scotland has competed in every Commonwealth Youth Games since they began, winning a total of 145 medals. However the number of participating countries, sports and allocated athlete places has varied significantly from Games to Games making direct comparisons difficult. What is more important is the number of athletes who progress to compete with distinction for Team Scotland at future Commonwealth Games.

Three finals and three medals at Samoa 2015 for Ewen Lumsden

A cultural week will run alongside the competition to allow athletes to mix with their peers from around the Commonwealth and learn about other cultures.

To date 66 Commonwealth Youth Games athletes have progressed to the senior Commonwealth Games with 16 of them going on to win medals. These include swimmers Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick, shooters Jennifer McIntosh, boxers Josh Taylor and Charlie Flynn, athlete Lynsey Sharp, gymnast Daniel Keatings, badminton player, Kirsty Gilmour and weightlifter Peter Kirkbride. At the last Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, Youth Team Scotland won 21 medals (3 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze).

Lewis also works in his local council gym helping people train from young to old. He has been a team captain on a few occasions as he is a good motivator and team player demonstrating his friendliness and approachability.

Boxer Lewis Johnstone announced as flagbearer With just a month to go to departure for Bahamas 2017, athletes and staff gathered in Stirling for their pre-Games Team Camp and a chance to get to know each other ahead of their journey to the sixth Commonwealth Youth Games. Information on what they can expect there, along with team building exercises and the all-important collection of their Team Scotland kit, was all on the agenda for the 41-strong team. The action packed day also saw the special announcement of the team’s flagbearer for the Opening Ceremony. Commonwealth Games Scotland Chairman, Paul Bush OBE announced that 17 year old boxer, Lewis Johnstone from Airdrie had been chosen saying: “To be named as flagbearer for Team Scotland at the Youth Games is a huge

honour and Lewis’s selection is a direct reflection of his performances over the last few years. Not only is Lewis a promising athlete in his own right, but his attitude and commitment to fellow team members makes him an excellent role model.” Lewis, who will be the first boxer to carry the flag for Team Scotland at a Commonwealth Youth Games, is a multiple Scottish and British agegroup champion and has an impressive record of international success. He represented Scotland at the 2015 World

Lewis was voted as flagbearer by his Scotland team-mates, after a shortlist of three was selected prior to the Team Camp. Fellow shortlisted nominees, Stephen Dent, Cycling (Fort William) and Erin Wallace, Athletics (Glasgow), will walk immediately behind Lewis into the Opening Ceremony, followed by the rest of the team. A delighted Lewis Johnstone said: “I am absolutely delighted to be named the flagbearer for Team Scotland 2017, this is definitely the proudest moment of my sporting career and it is showing that my hard work and training is clearly paying off. I am really looking forward to the Games and cannot wait to carry the flag out at the Opening Ceremony on behalf of the whole team. It will be great to see my family at the Opening Ceremony and will definitely be a great moment for everyone involved.”

Teamscotland.scot aims to be a comprehensive source of information about Scotland’s participation in the Commonwealth Games as well as promoting the next generation of Team Scotland stars and inspiring more Scots to be physically active.

The website has been created following a successful partnership with Dundee based technology company mtc, one of Scotland’s top web design, and e-commerce development companies and was planned using a user centric approach.

There is also a new supporters section aimed at encouraging greater public engagement with the team.
