GHSA Track and Field- 2025

Page 1

Welcometo the 2025 GHSA Track and Field state championships! The meet is sure to be exciting as all of the schools represented are looking forward to their team achieving the title of “Champion”. However, we all know that all of our teams are outstanding and are defi nitely winners. This has been an outstanding season and this year’s meet will include familiar faces as well as teams that have worked hard and peaked at just the right time. Our congratulations are in order for all of the teams, coaches, administrators, students and parents who have supported the athletes throughout this year’s journey to the fi nal meet. I know you will enjoy and appreciate the meet and all of the work leading up to this exciting event.

I would also like to thank you for your support of high school track and fi eld throughout the season. Your attendance and support are integral to the success of high school ath- letics and for the team and individuals you are here to cheer on. Good sportsmanship is expected from our athletes, and I urge you to be positive in your support of all our teams. Let’s work together to make today’s meet a great experience for all involved. To put on an event of this magnitude takes many volunteers who have worked tirelessly to provide a “fi rst class” event. Many hours of work from this group will enhance the experience of our athletes, students and fans. The GHSA staff has been working for weeks as well to ensure a special event for all involved.

Finally, I would like to thank our corporate sponsors who make it possible to put on these championships. Their advertisements can be seen throughout this guide, and I encourage you to support them whenever possible. The GHSA wants to thank these exemplary companies for their involvement. We appreciate their support.

Thank you for your attendance, and I know you are going to enjoy the best high school track and fi eld anywhere!

NEW CLASSIFICATIONS AND MILESTONES SET STAGE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

The

2025 GHSA Track and Field state championships are back for two days of historic action that will take place from May 9-10 at Hugh Mills Stadium (AD2 & 3A), East Jackson High School (2A & 4A), Carrollton (6A, A-3A Private & Adapted) and Barron Stadium (A-DI & 5A). In Class 6A, the Carrollton boys and Westlake girls will look to defend their titles after winning Class 7A championships last season in Georgia’s highest classification. On the boys side, Carrollton became the sixth different team to win a boys state title in the last six years in Georgia’s highest classification. The Westlake girls, meanwhile captured their second-straight title and eighth all-time title and have an opportunity to three-peat for the first time since the Lions accomplished the feat from 201315. The Class 6A field includes Chapel Hill—which is coming off a Class 5A boys state title last season.

OPPORTUNITY ARISES

Class 5A presents an opportunity for the Hughes boys and Woodward Academy girls to each achieve a third-straight state title. Hughes is led by UGA-commit Maurice Gleaton—who made national news late last month when he clocked a 9.98 finish in

the 100-meter dash at the Region 3-5A meet. The senior ran a 10.01 in mid-March and was being cautious with the volume of meets until the region slate rolled around. As a result, Gleaton is now the fastest sprinter the history of Georgia and he owns the second fastest wind legal time in the history of high school athletics.

The Westminster boys won their third state title since 2021 and the girls won their third-straight crown last year in Class 4A and return to a star-powered field of contenders looking for a consecutive sweep. Westminster will need to replace the production of University of Southern California signee Grace Smith—who closed out her brilliant varsity career as a two-time long jump state champion, a three-time team state champion in addition to a three-time champion in the 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles. Smith was also a four-time high point scorer for the Wildcats. The Westminster boys cruised past second-place Stephenson’s 59 points last year with a 91.25 total.

FAMILIAR FOES, NEW COMPETITION

Class 3A will look different this season with the adoption of the new Class A-3A Private

classification. Last season, Sandy Creek won a fifth all-time state title and second-straight boys Class 3A championship in a field that was dominated by public school programs. On the girls side, however, Wesleyan and Hebron Christian finished in the top 2 and public schools Monroe, Sandy Creek and Carver-Atlanta were the top finishers. With Wesleyan and Hebron Christian both competing in the Class A-3A field, there will be a new girls champion guaranteed this year. Additionally, Class 2A opens up opportunities after the Athens Academy boys and Landmark Christian girls took the title last year. In Class A Division I, Darlington and Athens Christian were separated by just one point last year and bring their talents into the private classification, while the defending state champion Oglethorpe County girls look to take home the program’s fourth state title since 2021 after topping Bleckley County 8174 last year. In Class A Division II Mitchell County returns after winning its first state title since 1957 last year, and the Charlton County girls are back after earning their first-ever state title last year with a 59-50 victory over defending state champion Montgomery County.
