Lambretta Electronic Ignition

We can offer you two different Lambretta electronic ignitions. The great advantage of electronic ignition is the low level of maintenance required. In contrast to points ignition, electronic ignition is friction free in operation, so it experiences no mechanical wear and tear. As a result, the AF and Indian ignitions both last longer and function without misfiring.

Weight

We have listed an the different weights of Lambretta flywheels in the table opposite. The AF flywheel is by far the lightest. Due to it's low rotating weight the tick-over rpm. has to be turned up slightly. This is really the only disadvantage that needs be considered. The advantages of the reduced rotating weight should not be under estimated. The reduced mass on the end of the crankshaft means considerably less resistance to rotation. As a result acceleration is dramatically improved, can and the engine can be revved on further. A decent power output comparison test between different weight flywheels can be found in the 'Classic Scooter' magazine (edition 15)

The heavy Indian flywheel is not suited to highly tuned motors, hampering performance, these should be ridden with a lightened flywheel. The Indian flywheel can be turned down to achieve this reduced weight. Standard or lightly tuned motors run perfectly well with the Indian ignition. Having said that, the advantages of the reduced weight are also immediately felt on standard motors too.

Stator Plate

We offer two different stators: the Indian one and the bgm 'High Performance' one. The bgm one is real quality stuff. The stator plate itself is easily spotted with the casted bgm logo. The coils and the pick-up are not of Indian origin, so the usual procedure to replace the pick up and LT coil as necessary on Indian stator plates is no longer needed. The wiring matches the colour coding on the CDI and the regulator. This means that the cable loom can be retained and the connections can be made according to the wire colours. This is not always the case with the Indian ignition. Pickup Ignition Low Tension Coil (1st left from the pickup) Earth (wire from the pickup) Lighting Coils (2nd left from the pickup)

Electronic Ignitions

Ducati 6-Pole ignition

The Indian ignition is produced by at least 2 different sources in India. The original ignition is manufactured by Scooters India Ltd. This is the one which we sell. A mad innovation from Scooters India was the lengthening of the fins of the fan, so that they would improve cooling. Unfortunately the longer fins did not circulate any more air. Our Indian wheels all have the fins shortened so that they fit under Italian fly flywheel cowlings. Problems with Indian ignitions that have come to our attention almost invariably relate to unlicensed copies of the SIL item. Examples range from the flywheel boss being badly riveted in or in the wrong position so that the timing cannot be set, through too loose magnets The AF ignitions are also manufactured exclusively for AF in India, and bear up to comparison with the original Ducati version.

A Quick Guide to Electronic Ignition Installation

In order to help you avoid mistakes in installing the electronic ignition, we have put together a quick guide.

Removing the Old Ignition

The first thing to do is remove the old points ignition. To do this take off the flywheel cowl, flywheel and the external coil, and if applicable the battery and rectifier. It is up to you whether you want top renew the junction box and/or wiring loom. The AF electronic ignition kit is supplied with a special junction box for electronic ignitions.

Tools

Before starting installation, make sure that you have all the necessary tools and parts (not forgetting 12Volt lighting) in order to complete the job. A flywheel pulling tool is essential. A flywheel holding tool is strongly recommended. This tool is also essential for AF ignitions, without it you will only succeed in snapping fins off the flywheel. According to whether you will set your ignition timing with a dial gauge or determine TDC with a piston stop or TDC gauge and set the firing point with a timing disc, you will need to have one or other of these instruments.
