Gran Turismo 186cc cylinder kit
The Gran Turismo is a cast-iron cylinder with reedvalve-induction. The four transfers a nicely shaped and consist of two main transfers and two boostports. Due to the material used, the cylinder can be bored to 66,5 mm.

The kit is available with two different inlet manifolds. If you are using the 26mm version, the carb is still sitting on the lefthand.side of the engine and the standard air filter box can be retained. Due to the slim reed block used which originally is used in cart racing, there are absolutely no problems clearing the frame or the side-panel. Also a battery tray, if fitted, does not have to be removed and choke and throttle cable can stay in place. The scooter can build back to standard easily, only the cylinder cowling must be modified for the inlet manifold. The power output of the kit is not to be sniffed at. Even if only used with a 24mm Mikuni carb and a DL 200 exhaust, it produces more horsepower than a standard GP 200 and at the same time offers much more pulling power due to higher torque figures. Using a Clubman exhaust, power is increased to 13-14 hp. With an old NK exhaust and a 24 mm PHBL carb you are already looking at 16 hp. Further to that, the Gran Turismo offers great potential for further tuning. Both an expansion pipe and a larger carb can be used with good results. For carburettors bigger than 25 mm, a different inlet manifold is available which points to the righthand side of the scooter. The finish of the cylinder shows a lot of attention to detail, you soon realise that the products of other makes and their weaknesses have been meticulously studied. The engine which is treated to this power boost however should be in good shape. The crankshaft plus bearings as well as the oil seals must be in very good condition, use of a GP/DL crank and an electronic ignition is highly recommended if a high-revving exhaust is fitted. In any case the ignition should be working faultlessly and be set to 19 deg before TDC (this is 2mm before TDC using 58mm stroke and a 107mm con-rod). Series I or II crankshafts with a bronze bush instead of a small-end bearing should be replaced. The kit includes the cylinder, inlet manifold, reed-block, small-end bearing, bolts and gaskets and the high-quality Yamaha piston. This Mitaka Yamaha YPVS piston fits the Gran Turismo without further modifications, so that no problems with relocated pistonring pegs are to be expected. Despite its high quality, this piston is relatively cheap and available from 64 to 66,5 mm diameter. The detailed instructions which come with the kit explain how to match the cylinder head to the piston.

The Gran Turismo kit offers a very wide and useful spread of power. If you like the power band of a standard Lambretta, the GT kit is ideal for you, as it simply offers more of that in any part of the rev-range. The useability of the smaller Lambrettas is dramatically increased this way. Besides the improved performance, petrol consumption is very moderate. At 60 mph (90 kph), less than 4 litres per 100 km should be needed. Gearing-wise, a 16 teeth front sprocket should be sufficient. If you want to find out more about the GT kit, have a look at www.granturismo.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk and the Scootering issues 160, 179, 211 and 224. Conclusion: The Gran Turismo is the ideal cylinder kit for those who do not want to change the standard looks of their Lambretta, but still want more useable power to go touring. If you want a race kit that squeezes the last fraction of a horsepower out of your scooter, this is clearly not the one to go for. Cylinder kit Gran Turismo 186 cc
