Sori in ovaries, scattered in the inflorescence, globose, 1–2 mm in diam., initially covered by a rather persistent silvery membrane, hiding an agglutinated, black spore mass. Sori readily fall off the plant. Spores small, 10–18 × 13–22 µm, subglobose to broadly ellipsoidal, only slightly flattened, pale reddish brown; wall uniform, 1.5–2,5 µm thick, with 1–5 internal swellings, lightrefractive spots absent, surface echinate with spines up to 1.0 µm high, spines subacute, rounded or slightly flattened apically, spore profile serrate. Anamorph (Crotalia cintractiae-fischeri Liro) often present. Spore germination of Anthracoidea-type (Kukkonen 1964:170, fig. 11). On Cyperaceae: Carex (subgen. Vignea, sect. Glareosae (Canescentes)) C. brunnescens (Pers.) Poir., C. canescens L. (principal host), C. heleonastes L., C. lapponica O.F. Lang, C. mackenziei V.I. Krecz., and hybrids, (sect. Divisae) C. chordorrhiza L. f., (sect. Hol-

arrhenae) C. disticha Huds. (principal host), C. pseudocuraica F. Schmidt, (sect. Heleoglochin = Paniculatae) C. cusickii Mack., C. diandra Schrank, (sect. Ovales) C. bebbii (L.H. Bailey) Olney ex Fernald, C. ovalis Good., (sect. Stellulatae) C. interior L.H. Bailey, (sect. Tenuiflorae) C. tenuiflora Wahlenb., (sect. Vulpinae) C. vulpina L.; N Europe, N America. “In spite of this wide host spectrum there are no reasons to believe Anthracoidea fischeri to be heterogeneous” (Nannfeldt 1979:19).
