01 DARREEFIELDSPLAZA DUBLIN, OHIO

CD SUBMISSION SET (NOVEMBER 2022)

Role: Project Designer

Team Members: Seizan Lindstrom (Project Designer) | Katie Freeland (Director & Principal)

Darree Fields is home to baseball diamonds, soccer fields, dog parks, and other public community spaces. The park contains a series of Italianate plazas supporting restrooms, concessions, storage, and dining areas. To continue the park’s esthetic, the new plaza follows previous design moves, creating another landmark within the field for visitors to collect.

Construction is replicated, as well, with batten board siding over a stick frame structure. The plaza is nestled in between two existing baseball diamonds with plans to also serve two future soccer fields. Based on the average team size playing on the baseball and soccer fields, and the count of spectators per player, fixture counts were able to be determined. While the building faces the baseball fields, the concrete pad is oriented in opposition to the structure creating a plaza that follows the shape of a baseball base.

PROJECT ROLES:

• Produced project’s design and programing.

• Independently produced SD-CD drawing documents.

• Produced renders and visuals.

SD SUBMISSION SET (FEBRUARY 2020)

Role: Designer, Project Coordinator

Team Members: Jeff Schumaker (Project Manager)

Managed through Christ the King Catholic Church, the current Bishop Griffin Resource Center serves the Near East Columbus area. In partnering with the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, the center provides fresh foods, non-perishable items, and essential toiletries to 70 families in need per day twice a week within their community. With this impressive amount of residents being served on a weekly basis, there is a need to provide for more families in the area and neighboring communities.

The proposed resource center is designed to help combat issues the existing space created. At 11,500sf, the space will be about three times larger than the current center. The new center will have larger spaces, increased storage, spatial efficiency, and dedicated classroom spaces.Through closely working with Mid-Ohio, the organization is using the proposed center as the standard modelfor upcoming centers.

PROJECT ROLES:

• Led project’s design and programing from initial start through project’s redesign.

• Presented designs to Owner.

• Engaged with Mid-Ohio Food Bank and operations staff to understand their program’s specific needs.

• Independently produced SD-CD drawing documents and project manual.

TRIADARCHITECTS’ HOMEOFFICE

COLUMBUS, OHIO

DD SUBMISSION SET (JUNE 2020)

Role: Designer, Project Coordinator

Team Members: Jocelyn Krosky (Project Manager)

Moving to the Franklinton area,TriadArchitects is finding its perinate location in the trendy arts district of Columbus. While Triad has been expanding for the past couple of years, previous workspaces have not been able to keep up with the growth.

This project has allowed me to exhibit the skills I have learned while working atTriad for the past three years following my undergraduate studies. I led the design of the building and individually produced the drawings and documentation while working closely with one of Triad’s Principals who acted as the client.

Afocus for the project was having a variety of spaces that are reactive and multipurpose. Community is a large aspect ofTriad, whether it is through our work or connecting with individuals. The ability to host a variety of gatherings called for flexible spaces. I was able to achieve this using large open spaces, flexible entrances, and spatial alignments.

PROJECT ROLES:

• Led project’s design and programing.

• Independently produced SD-CD drawing documents.

• Produced renders and visuals.

Workspace flexibility and collaboration is encouraged through a variety of spaces. Every firm member has their personal workspace, however, there is a need to move around the office to collaborate or find privacy.

Darker pink spaces are formal collaboration spaces ranging in sizes.

Lighter pink spaces show informal spaces that members can meet and present ideas.

COVID RESPONSE PLANS

The design of the office aligned to the start of quarantine. Instead of continuing to design a “typical” office, it was evident that there was a new reality ahead. We considered that after the construction of the project, the Covid-19 guidelines could continue to be in effect. Spacing of desks and seating were revised to be more than 6’apart from one another. Where this cannot be maintained, desk partitions have been added. Walkways were six apart with desk partitions facing the main walkways. SITE PLAN

One of the building’s veneer materials is a fiber cement rain screen panel. Within the section, the continuous path of air is shown through the arrows. The perforated angles allow airflow to enter. Airflow escapes out the top of the cavity at the sheet metal sills or at the gravel stops.

Continuous thermal insulation is illustrated through the dark pink of the rigid insulation and the light pink of the spray foam insulation. Glazing and wood blocking align with these paths of insulation to prevent a thermal break.

CD SUBMISSION SET (2021)

Role: Designer, Project Coordinator

Team Members: Kevin Kindy (Project Manager)

Designed for Del-Co Water, this distribution center in one of a series of existing buildings in the company’s campus. The company services and manages water for the city of Delaware. This requires large industrial vehicles to frequently run through the site and building during the day for multiple service runs. Logistics of these vehicles’path of travel was a key design issue.Alongside the site work, teams of engineers and customer service offices are located in the West portion of the building. The building became divided in order to contain the debris collected by the onsite staff – to the East- and the culture of the cubicalstaff – to the West. Communal spaces for all teams for training, lunches, or events are located on the second level.Adesign challenge arrived by having the assembly spaces on the second level. In order to meet the applicable building code, space planning was strategic in relationship to safety egress.

PROJECT ROLES:

• Led project’s design and programing. Design follows the campus’s aesthetic while providing new visual interest.

• Coordinated design with the Ohio Building Code in order to meet requirements.

• Independently produced DD and CD sets.

• Led coordination with Owners and consultants.

• Presented designs to Owner.

PROJECT COMPLETION -AUGUST 2021

Role: Designer, Project Coordinator, ConstructionAdmin

Team Members: Jocelyn Krosky (Project Manager), OHM Architects (Architect of Record)

Under the partnership with OHMArchitects, TriadArchitects took the role of designing the core and shell of two elementary schools and one middle school. During construction,Triad was responsible for weekly field visits to monitor progress of the entire project. Exterior related RFIs and submittals were reviewed under Triad. This project consists of a variety of facade materials, patterns and material transitions. Due to these shifting wall types, an extensive documentation of exterior details were required. Avariety of cast stone and masonry elements were used throughout the project, sparking a need to focus on these detail elements.Through close review with the International Masonry Institute and Cast Stone Institute a library of standard masonry details were produced for internal use. While in construction, details were reviewed and updated according to site challenges, construction manager’s feedback, and installation issues.

PROJECT ROLES:

• OHMArchitects are the architect of record for both projects. I collaborated with the OHM team as I focused on the exterior envelope.

• Developed documents for Design Development and Construction Documents for exterior items.

• Coordinated with consultants.

• Independently detailed exterior envelope.

• Performed weekly field reports.

• Reviewed exterior related submittals and RFIs.

• Led the production and execution of standard masonry details. Monitored details success or need for revision in field. Executed implementation of standard masonry details forinternal use.

ACPAis a growing preparatory containing middle school and high school students. The school is founded on the exploration of performative and physical arts. This project is an addition to the existing school, containing additional classrooms, a cafetorium, and a revised entry sequence with admin suites moving to the back of the site. In celebration of alternative learning, the project has two ELAspaces for small group work and studying. The exterior and interior of the building emulates the artistic culture of the school’s community. The exterior is an ombre of metalpanels highlighting the school’s signature “ACPAGreen” paired with glossy black brick. The addition rests against a vibrant student mural that drew inspiration for the lively atmosphere within. The project was Design-Build.

To continue the firm’s relationship with the client, I participated in multiple Chalkfests as a FeaturedArtist. This event celebrated the LGBTQIA+ community and encouraged students to live their most authentic life. The murals highlighted the encouragement of exploration and featured pioneers in in the fight for acceptance.

08 TONKEN’SVISITOR CENTER

CINCINNATI, OHIO

Fall 2022

Professor Brian Healy

Frank Lloyd Wright’sTonkens House is one of the best examples of his UsonianAutomatic era. Designed to be a kit of parts - allowing owners to become their own designer - the home is designed on a 2x2 gid with a series of 14 precast block modules.

This studio project consisted of designing a visitor and research center. The project had a variety of locations to live on home’s large plot of land. However, the most dramatic terrain of the site was located at the rear of the home stepping down from the terrace. In order to preserve the views ofTonkens and maintain its intended imagery of a home, the design of the visitor center was to be located behind the home, hidden in the terrain. The building steps down along the hill side allowing for the datum of the house to never be exceeded. The required area of the center competed with the home by nearly two times. Through sinking portions of the program and parking into the ground, Tonkens was not overwhelmed by the massing of the project.

09 MASONRYMUSEUM

OVER-THE-RHINE | CINCINNATI, OHIO

Fall 2021

ProfessorTerry Bowling

Over-the-Rhine contains some of the most intact historical buildings in an urban center. Many of the homes and multiuse buildings can be dated back to the early 1800s with layering of later styles up to the new build projects being completed today. While Greek Revival, QueenAnne, Gothic Revival, andArt Deco buildings can be found in Over-the-Rhine, the most prominent style is Italianate. Key design concepts from this late 1800s style are followed in the district’s historical conservation guidelines.Allbuildings built in OTR must be organized in a base, middle, top elevation to align to neighboring buildings. The base must be majority storefront to promote pedestrian interaction. The middle shall follow the rhythm and opening ratio of neighboring buildings. Lastly, the top is a cornice like banding similar to the decorative cornices of surrounding structures.

The studio brief was to follow the historical guidelines while bringing a fresh and competing perspective. Program consisted of a masonry museum where masonry techniques are taught and celebrated. I explored a variety of brick applications through “flex brick” for sun shading to double wythe brick for structure. The design consists of a sculptural central stair that can be interacted with on the exterior but accessed within. Within the stair is a central mechanical supply and machine room.An additional benefit to the double wythe brick is the fire rating, allowing for the main stair to be used for egress.
