Underground Spaces Unveiled Planning and creating the cities of the future Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro

Underground Spaces Unveiled: Planning and creating the cities of the future is a broad overview of the concept of underground space development, investigating the issues that are associated with the sustainable development of urban underground space. This book shows the benefi ts, the possibilities and world-class examples of underground space development and how that translates into sustainable urbanisation. Underground Spaces Unveiled n approaches all aspects of urban underground space

and brings together both past and present insights n includes worldwide case studies from the

perspectives of a civil engineer and an urban planner, offering a multifaceted approach to the considerations of underground space use n places urban underground space within the

context of climate change, city resilience and rapid urbanisation n discusses the various claims to the subsurface

including the use for space versus the use for energy. Written by an enlightened engineer and a visionary urban planner ensuring a balanced view and wide appeal, the book is intended for civil engineers, urban planners, urban designers and architects as well as anyone involved with the future of urban development.

Winner of the ISOCARP 2018 Gerd Albers Award for Best Book! The Gerd Albers Award was established in 1999 to recognise outstanding publications that elucidate current debate and practical achievements in the planning field. It was awarded to Han Admiraal and Antonia Cornaro in October 2018 in Bodo, Norway, during ISOCARP’s (International Society for City and Regional Planners) annual planning congress. From the jury’s report: “Based on the authors’ rich experience in developing the potential of the underground, the book represents a major breakthrough in the ‘groundscapes’ research. It exceeds the popular narrative on the underground space: the outcomes are based on a comprehensive overview of both the constraints and possibilities for the underground space use as well as in-depth case studies. The ideas, approaches and instruments illustrating how to deal efficiently with the ‘groundscapes’ and how to increase their potential are precious: not only transport hubs, but also subterranean parks, pedestrian zones, commercial, entertainment, and cultural facilities are some of many examples that clearly revolve around the urban challenges of city expansion, extreme energy consumption, the lack of green areas, and threat for public health. Hence, the book offers invaluable advice to a broad audience beyond planning circles interested in creating the cities of the future.” ISOCARP Gerd Albers award jury 2018

The book has so far been presented by the authors in Vienna, London, Dubai, Zurich and Hong Kong. Further presentations and readings are planned. Visit www.thinkdeep.net for more information.
