DLAA PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

In 1883, Richard Chapman Weldon was inaugurated Dean when Dalhousie University opened the first common law school in Canada. His drive for unselfish public service birthed the Weldon Tradition that still carries on today at the Schulich School of Law. As President of the Dalhousie Law Alumni Association (DLAA), I am proud of the achievements shown by the nearly 8,000 alumni that we serve. Through mentorship and volunteering, many of our graduates continue to donate their time and resources which have such a positive and genuine impact around the world. Students that attend the Schulich School of Law can be confident in knowing that they are following the steps of many exceptional alumni. That is why, each year, the DLAA recognizes extraordinary achievement within our community. This is done through the sponsoring of the Alumni Teaching Award, the Bertha Wilson Honour Society Award and the Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service. I encourage you to continue bringing forward nominations detailing exemplary service among law alumni. This year you can expect to see a refreshed DLAA Board of Directors that we hope will exemplify the diversity found within our alumni community. We have created spaces to ensure more geographical representation, which will only enhance our global reach. Furthermore, we want to add younger alumni so that we can have fresh perspectives and ideas. If you feel you would like to offer your time to the Board or any of our worldwide branches, please do not hesitate to reach out. To say that the last year has been a unique one would be an understatement. In some way or another, all of us have been impacted by the pandemic within our lives, careers and families. Despite the significant challenges, I am proud of and encouraged by the dedication and work you all continue to do within your professions and communities. I also want to extend my congratulations to this year’s class of 2021 and my gratitude to the faculty that supported them during this time. I can only imagine what the last year was like for all of you. The perseverance, creativity and resiliency you have all shown will only further benefit you in your already bright futures. I look forward to seeing and meeting many of you, as soon as we can again. Sincerely,

Tony Amoud (’09) President, Dalhousie Law Alumni Association
