Knowledge is Power Curriculum Intent At Bradley Green Primary Academy, we believe that the curriculum should provide children with the experiences, knowledge and understanding of the world they live in, so they can acquire and apply it in a range of opportunities, as we truly believe that ‘Knowledge is Power’.

Threaded throughout our curriculum are the four core values: confidence, curiosity, challenge and respect, which we believe are vital life skills to enable children to achieve their potential.

Regular opportunities for knowledge retrieval, quizzing and recall are crucial to ensure learning is embedded in our pupil’s long-term memory.

We provide the children with a rich and broad curriculum where all pupils can learn and achieve in our ‘Ambition for Excellence’.

Teachers plan for pupils to be exposed to concepts and scenarios that no matter what their background, they will never be at a disadvantage, ensuring there is a large emphasis on cultural capital to develop a wide understanding of the world around them, in our constant strive to prepare them for the next steps in their learning.

We use an enquiry approach to our learning opportunities; this means children are constantly deepening their knowledge and understanding through the collaborative experiences and questions planned for them, not only by teachers, but being challenged by their peers. Questions form the basis of this approach so we can develop collaboration and peer support as well as a greater understanding of the curriculum.

Through high quality texts that drive our curriculum, we ensure that the development of vocabulary is key, as it is vital that children be fully submerged in their learning. We know that children who are readers go onto be successful learners who take risks, become curious and reflective life-long learners.

Health and well-being of our pupils, families and staff is very important to us. From the fantastic healthy school meals which are cooked freshly on the premises each day to the daily mile and sports competitions we take part in, we believe that in the few years children are at Bradley Green, we can really have a positive impact on their ability to reach their true potential.

Physical development of all children is really important to us. We aim to ensure al children leave school being able to ride a bike, and are given the opportunity to represent their school in sporting competitions. We were even awarded the virtual school games award because of our commitment to our children’s physical health and well-being during lockdown.

Technology is really important to us at Bradley Green. Every classroom has a new interactive TV screen and all children have access to the very latest iPads and laptops which not only enhances our learning experiences in school, but has helped train children to be able to use technology as part of any home learning.

Children at Bradley Green have lots of opportunity to represent school at school and local level and are great ambassadors for our school.

Our commitment to our children’s education and high quality teaching, we meet national expectations at the end of key stages and have some of the best phonics screening check results we have ever had.

Implementation Progression of skills document – Allows for progression across the year groups.

Knowledge organisers – These ensure that it is clear for teachers, children and parents, the information that should be learned and remembered.

Retrieval practice – Every lesson has a retrieval element to aid long-term memory.

Key stage assemblies to focus on retrieval and ‘Knowledge is Power’ (Continents, Countries in Europe) Showcase subject assemblies to allow pupils to develop the key concepts (such as battles or plants) to be progressive and knowledge to be deepened with regular opportunities to share and be evaluated.

Knowledge Organisers At Bradley Green Primary Academy, we believe that ‘Knowledge is Power’. From January 2019, we have introduced a new strategy to help deepen the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world. Each half term, the children will take home ‘Knowledge organisers’. This document contains the essential knowledge that the children will need to know as part of their topic. The knowledge organisers are designed to be used at home by parents to help children learn the information contained within them as well as in class. Our aim is that all children will be able to recall all the information confidently by the end of each topic.

The children will be quizzed regularly on the content of both the current and any previous organisers. This has been proven to commit information to long-term memory.

We are confident that knowledge organisers will help children to develop a deeper knowledge of a wide range of topics and will significantly improve their vocabulary.
