New Funding Opportunities Lord's Taverners Accessible Minibuses Grant Programme (UK) The Lord's Taverners, the UK's leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, is accepting applications through its Accessible Minibuses grants programme. SEN Schools and organisations catering for young disabled people in the UK can apply to the Lords Taverners for specially-adapted, wheelchair-accessible minibuses.

Last year the Lords Taverners delivered 40 specially-adapted, wheelchair-accessible minibuses.

Examples of schools that received a specially-adapted minibus are:   

Lakeside School in Hertfordshire; The Garth School and the Priory School in Spalding (Lincolnshire); and Perseid School in Morden, Surrey.

These vehicles give young people with disabilities access to new places and experiences. Lord's Taverners minibuses are based on the current Ford Transit model, with a diesel engine. Please note that the Lord's Taverners are unable to support schools that cater for socially disadvantaged children, or mainstream schools for children with behavioural problems.

Funding for Schools Science Projects (UK) The Royal Society has announced that its Partnership grant scheme has re-opened for applications.

Through the scheme grants of up to £3,000 are available for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) projects run at a primary or secondary school or college in partnership with a professional scientist or engineer.

The aim of the fund is to make the teaching of science more interesting within primary and secondary schools.

The Partnership Grant scheme forms partnerships to allow teachers to increase their scientific knowledge and to give scientists and engineers the chance to develop their communication skills and engage with enquiring young minds. Any UK primary or secondary school teacher or practicing scientist/engineer can apply as long as the students involved in the project are between 5 and 18.

A partnership needs to be established before starting the application and the initial application must be started by the school partner as the primary applicant. The second partner should be an individual currently working in a STEM related profession, such as a researcher or analyst.

Additionally in 2020 there is a new extension to the scheme called Tomorrow's climate scientists. This extension will fund schools to research specifically into climate change and biodiversity issues. The application process for Tomorrow's climate scientists is the same as for the main scheme. For further information about this extension, please contact the Schools Engagement team via education@royalsociety.org There is a two stage application process. The closing date for stage 1 applications is the 1st March 2020. Once stage 1 has been submitted the information will undergo our eligibility checks. If successful, the application will be moved to stage 2. Stage 2 will close at the end of March.

What’s the Weather Like? - a Partnership Grants project between Mead Community Primary School and Black and Veatch that has enabled pupils to begin predicting their local weather.

Shooting stars on camera: Colour composition and contrasts: A project between William Perkin C of E High School and the Open University. Students have been determining the origin and elemental structure of meteors under the guidance of academic professional, Professor Monica Grady.

Grants for Community Music Projects (UK) Grants are available to UK based community groups and schools who would benefit from a “helping hand” to bring music to their community and fulfil their potential in becoming truly sustainable music programmes.

The funding which is being made available by the charity Music for All, can be put towards musical instrument costs, workshops/training, using music to break down barriers, providing a variety of educational opportunities as well as helping to find ways to integrate many diverse and minority groups positively into society. Grants of up to £2,500 are available, but due to increased demand most awards will be for less than this amount.

UK based community music groups and educational organisations are eligible to apply. Applicants are encouraged to look for other sources of funding to add to the amount needed to deliver the project.

Examples of projects funded: Belham Primary School: Used a grant from Music for All to purchase instruments and resulted in 137 out of the 180 children learning violin, guitar, ukulele or recorder. This compares to 6 months earlier when only a handful were learning just the recorder.

Funding of up to £500 is also available to individuals who do not have the means to access musical instruments and lessons.

Applications are assessed three times a year in Spring, Summer and Autumn and the next deadline for applications is the 1st July 2020.

School Grants to Promote Physics (UK) The Institute of Physics has announced that UK schools and colleges can apply for grants of up to £600 for small-scale projects or events linked to the teaching or promotion of physics and engineering to pupils aged 5 - 19. Grants can support a wide range of projects such as school-based science weeks, extracurricular activities, science clubs, careers event or a visit from a working physicist or engineer.

Grants may be used for the following purposes: materials/resources; transport; marketing and publicity; other purposes deemed appropriate by the judges; and supply cover (in certain circumstances).

The Institute of Physics is interested in proposals that look at:        

particle physics astronomy space and nuclear physics energy transport information and communications design and promotion built environment.

Previous projects to receive funding include:  

Ampleforth College for a visit to Jodrell Bank Radio Observatory.

St John’s High School for a Practical Rocketry workshop to design a water-propelled rocket.

The closing date for applications is the 1st June 2020 (for projects taking place in the following autumn term).

Science and Chemistry Equipment Grants for Schools (UK) Teachers at primary or secondary schools can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 towards the purchase of equipment to support the delivery of Primary Science or Chemistry lessons. Bids are invited for the purchase of items of equipment that cannot be purchased through a school’s mainstream teaching budget and which would enrich the learning experience of students.

The Royal Society of Chemistry aims to support schools in presenting Chemistry lessons that enrich the learning experience of students in either primary (science) or secondary (chemistry) studies. The Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector (BMCS) of the Society awards Enhanced Equipment grants towards the purchase of equipment that supports delivery of the practical aspect of chemistry education. Applications will be enhanced by a demonstration of the diversity of application of the equipment within and between student cohorts.

A teacher at a primary or secondary school should make the application.

The funding is being made available through the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Enhanced Equipment grant scheme and applications to the scheme can be made at any time.

Awards for Young Musicians (UK) Awards for Young Musicians (AYM), which support the UK's most talented young musicians (aged 5 to 17) who, because of financial need, may be prevented from fulfilling their creative potential, has announced that it is seeking applications for its Awards Scheme is open for applications.

AYM supports young musicians, who make music in any genre, who can clearly show that they are really talented and committed and that they need financial help with their music expenses. Each year AYM make awards of up to £2,000, based on evidence of musical talent and financial need. The Awards cover the purchase or hire of:      

Musical instruments and accessories Music lessons Weekend music schools Music courses Orchestra fees Travel.

The awards are open to 5 to 17 year old's that have achieved distinction in their last music exam, or, if they haven't taken exams, show evidence of this level of ability; be recommended by their music teacher; and have evidence of financial need.

Grants of £1,000 Available to Fund Innovative Geography Teaching at Secondary Level (UK) Two grants of £1,000 each are available to fund innovative geography teaching at secondary level.

The aim of the grants is to enable imaginative, innovative or creative teaching materials to be developed.

The grants will be awarded to teacher – higher education partnerships. Ideally these will comprise one school teacher and one lecturer/researcher from a UK Higher Education Institution. The funding is being made available through the Royal Geographic Society Innovative Geography Teaching Grants.

Every year, the Society identifies an area of research which is either based upon a timely issue or approach. The aim is to serve both geography pupils and the wider teaching community through the creation of teaching materials on this particular issue. The materials produced will be published on the Society’s website.

The application deadline is the 15th February 2021.

Science Grants for Schools (England, Scotland & Wales) State-funded primary schools, nurseries and special schools in Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent, Clackmannanshire, Fermanagh & Omag, Hull, North East Lincolnshire, Newry, Mourne & Down, West Lothian, North East Lincolnshire, Wakefield and Wolverhampton can apply for grant from the Edina Trust to run science projects.

The level of funding available is dependent upon the type of school applying:   

Full primary and ASN schools can apply for grants of up to £600; Infant and Junior schools up to £300; Nursery schools and nursery classes within schools can apply for a one-off grant of up to £420.

The Science Grant Scheme runs in each area for three years, before moving on to a new area.

Grants can be used for science weeks, science related school trips, science equipment and science subscriptions; improving school grounds for science and gardening resources.

Examples of projects that received funding are: 

St Bede's Primary School, Sunderland that created a Forest School area in the school grounds.

The school used the Edina Trust grant to purchase tools that the children can use, which has allowed them to get outside and learn about nature, as well as develop their self-confidence.



Kersland School, Renfrewshire had a visit from Glasgow Science Centre's Bodyworks On Tour programme. The programme is all about our amazing bodies and offers an array of exciting workshops, live science shows and interactive exhibits. Everything is hands-on and designed to fit the needs of learners from pre-school through to primary and secondary school pupils.

T Level Capital Fund Opens for Applications (England) The Government has announced that it is inviting existing T Level providers to apply to the T Level Capital Fund. The fund will be delivered in two parts. Eligible providers can bid for funding to refurbish existing buildings or create new spaces, while funding for specialist equipment such as digital and audio-visual kit, will be allocated to all providers in Spring next year.

A total of ÂŁ95 million will be available.

The funding is available to organisations that are on the list of providers selected to deliver T Levels and are an Academy, Further Education College, Higher Education Institution, School, Sixth Form College or University Technical College; and they have not previously been awarded a grant for the T Level route for which they are applying.

Organisations that are eligible for BFIG and intend to submit an application you can apply for up to ÂŁ20,000 fee support to help fund the costs of making their application, including external technical advisers. Fee support applications must be submitted to TLevelsW2.Capital@education.gov.uk by 12 noon on 19th February 2020.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on the 30th April 2020.

Funding for Music Making Projects For Young People in Challenging Circumstances (England) Schools as well as other not-for-profit organisations can apply for grants to fund developmental musicmaking projects for children and young people in challenging circumstances as well as for projects that support the development of the workforce, organisations and the wider music making sector. The funding is being made available through Youth Music, England's largest children's music charity, which provides funding for music-making projects.

Youth Making's funding programme is made up of three separate funds. These are:   

Fund A which offers small grants (£2,000 to £30,000) for high quality music-making projects; Fund B offers medium-sized grants (30,001 - £150,000 per year for up to two years) for larger programmes of work.

Music Education Hub Development Fund

In applying for funding schools will have to justify how the activities to be funded do not duplicate Department of Education funding.

The closing dates for applications to Fund A is 5pm on the 3rd April 2020. Fund B and the Education Hub Development Fund are currently closed and expected to re-open for applications in Autumn 2020.

Funding to Prevent Young People Entering the Justice System (Scotland) YouthLink Scotland has announced that the latest round of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities Youth Work Fund is now open for applications. YouthLink Scotland are looking to support projects that deliver a range of activities for young people between the ages of 10-24 that:   

Supports people, families and communities most affected by crime.

Supports young people most at risk of being involved in antisocial behaviour, offending or reoffending into positive destinations.

Supports young people most at risk of entering the justice system.

Funded activity must be delivered between June 2020 and the end of March 2021. A total of £700,000 is available.

The closing date for applications is 1.00pm on Friday 20 March 2020.

Grants for Schools and Young People’s Projects (Southwark) Schools and organisations working with schools and colleges in the London Borough of Southwark have until the 15th May 2020 to apply for a grant from the Newcomen Collet Foundation.

Priority is given to:   

Assisting schools and other groups to purchase equipment for the benefit of children; Supporting extra curricula activities (e.g. school trips, after school clubs, holiday clubs, uniformed organisations) for children and young people; Assisting organisations which provide educational opportunities to schools and colleges in the Borough of Southwark (e.g. visiting theatre companies and musicians). It is unlikely that they will provide 100% of funding so applicants should also have additional funding options in place.

The Foundation will usually visit organisations to ensure that the scheme is viable. However, with only £100,000 a year to give in grants, it is unlikely that the Foundation will ever fully support a project, and involvement of other grant-giving bodies is usually needed.

Grants for Education Projects (London Boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham) The Drapers Company manage a small grant programme on behalf of the Sir William Boreman's Foundation. The Foundation supports work with young people aged under 25 living in the London Boroughs of Greenwich or Lewisham.

Registered charities and educational establishments can apply to the Fund for one-off grants of up to £5,000 to support their work. Projects funded will have an educational focus and, ideally, focus on inclusiveness.

Funding Reminders Grants of up to £30,000 Available to Support Disadvantaged Children (UK) Not for profit organisations such as special schools; registered charities; voluntary organisations; churches; and community interest groups; etc. can apply for grants of up to £10,000 per year for up to 3 years for projects that help children and young people overcome the effects of illness, distress, abuse or neglect; disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; and poverty and deprivation.

Projects funded through BBC Children in Need aim to make a differences in children’s lives that help prevent or overcome the effects of the disadvantages they face. Projects achieve these differences by either working directly with children or seeking to improve their social and physical environments.

Funding to Promote Public Engagement and Teaching of MicroBiology (UK) The Microbiology Society has announced that grants of up to £1000 are available for a variety of educational outreach activities to promote public engagement with microbiology. Funding is available to support relevant science teaching or promotion initiatives, or to support developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology.

Full, Full Concessionary or Postgraduate Student Members of the Microbiology Society who reside in the UK or Republic of Ireland can apply under the Microbiology Society Education and Outreach Grants Programme.

Funding is available for talks, workshops, demonstrations, posters, leaflets, broadcasts, activities at science festivals and audio-visual or computer-based packages. Applications relevant to the teaching of any aspect of microbiology in primary, secondary or tertiary (including postgraduate) education will be considered.

Funding to Encourage Young People to Study Science Subjects (UK) In response to the much publicised skills gap in the British engineering industry, the Ironmongers’ Foundation wishes to support initiatives that encourage talented young people under the age of 25 to study science subjects at school and go on to pursue engineering-related further education or vocational training.

The funding is available to registered or exempt charities within the UK, with a preference for urban areas outside London and particularly areas in the north and midlands with a manufacturing presence.

Activities must be additional to those funded by government or other sources e.g. covered by school budgets. The Foundation prefers to support smaller projects where its contribution can make a real difference.

Society for Microbiology – Science Education and Outreach Grants (UK) The Society for Microbiology provides grants to support the teaching of microbiology. The scheme is open to Full, Full Concessionary or Postgraduate Student Members; including those working in schools residing in the UK or Republic of Ireland to support relevant science teaching or promotion initiatives, or to support developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology. The maximum grant available is £1,000.

Activities funded can include:     

Talks, workshops, demonstrations, posters, leaflets, broadcasts, activities at science festivals and audio-visual or computer-based packages; Activities that take place as part of a National Science and Engineering Week event at the applicant's place of work; Running a school or college-based science week activity (e.g. hands-on or programme of talks); Supporting microbiology activities in an out-of-school science club; Buying materials and equipment outside of normal department resources to support a microbiology activity (no more than £500 can be used toward large equipment such as microscopes and incubators); A class visit to a microbiology laboratory to carry out activities; and Organising a visit to or from a working microbiologist.

The grant scheme will re-open for applications on the 6th January 2020 with a closing date for applications of the 8th April 2020.

Funding for Capital Projects in Secondary Schools and Sixth Form Colleges (UK) From the 1st May 2020, high achieving secondary schools and colleges will be eligible to apply for a grant towards the cost of capital projects through the Wolfson Foundation’s Funding for secondary schools & sixth form colleges programme. Secondary schools and Sixth form colleges are eligible to apply for grants of between £15,000 and £100,000.

Grants of between £15,000 and for £50,000 are available for equipment projects and grants of between £15,000 and £100,000 are available for new build and refurbishment projects.

The Wolfson Foundation’s Secondary Education Programme is primarily dedicated to supporting the teaching of A-Levels and GCSEs at high-achieving state-funded schools and sixth form colleges. The Foundation funds capital projects and in the past allocated approximately £1.75 million each year to new build, refurbishment or equipment projects related to the teaching of science, computer science, design & technology, art, languages, music and performing arts.

Schools and colleges that have reached a level of excellence determined by a combination of criteria, but mainly through the receipt of an outstanding Ofsted assessment (or regional equivalent) are eligible to apply.

Awards made in 2018 include:   

Grants for UK-German Partnership Visits (UK) The Partnership Visit Fund supports new or on-going partnerships between UK and German schools by providing financial support of up to £1,000 for teachers' visits to a partner school.

Teachers of primary and secondary schools can apply for a visit that revives an existing school partnership or develops a new one, or allows new teachers coming on board to familiarise themselves with the partner school. The focus of the visit must be on planning future activities between pupils, and developing an interactive project to take place within the year. Visits should not last longer than one week, the school must provide 25% of the required funding and a maximum of 3 teachers can be supported.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but the proposed visit must not start for at least 4 weeks after you submit your application.

Grants of up to £10,000 to Encourage People to Play Sport (England) Formally constituted not for profit organisations and statutory bodies including sports clubs, voluntary organisations, local authorities, schools or governing bodies of sport are eligible to apply for grants of between £300 and £10,000 to cover capital and revenue costs for projects that help more people regardless of age, background or ability, to play more sport or to be more active more often. Projects can be up to three years in duration.

The focus of the Grants Programme is on adults and young people predominantly aged 14 or over.

Projects working with mixed age groups may be considered if there is a particular focus on people aged 14 plus which meet one or more of the aims of Sport England's ‘Towards an Active Nation’ strategy:     

Get inactive people to become more active Develop lasting sporting habits Engender more positive attitudes among young people Develop more diverse volunteers Improve progression and inclusion among the most talented

Projects working with mixed age groups may still be considered if there is a focus on people aged 14 and over.

Tesco Bags of Help Grants Programme Opens for 2020 Applications (England, Wales and Scotland) Community groups and schools can now apply for funding of up to £2000 for projects in England, Wales and Scotland that benefit their local community.

The funding has been made available by the Tesco’s Bags of Help programme which is administered

by Groundwork and can cover a broad range of projects and can be used: to purchase sports kit, litter pickers, camping equipment; improvements to buildings; the development of outdoor space such as a play area or woodland; running a community event or supporting seasonal activities.

Applications are assessed by Groundwork to ensure they are eligible. In areas where application numbers are high, Tesco colleagues will shortlist the projects to determine which go forward to the customer vote. Three community projects in each local area will be voted on by customers in Tesco stores, with projects changing every three months. Following the vote, the project that received the most votes in its area will receive a grant of up to £2,000, second place receiving up to £1,000 and third place up to £500.

The type of organisations that can apply include:      

Voluntary or community organisations (including registered charities/companies), Schools Health bodies (e.g. Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs, NHS Hospital Trust, Foundation Trust), Parish/Town Councils, Local authorities Social housing providers

Funding for Major Capital Projects to Encourage Physical Activity (London & Surrey) Grants of between £20,001 and £150,000 are available for the renovation, modernisation or creation of significant sports and leisure facilities in London and Surrey. The funding is available to not for profit organisations such as local authorities, charities, community and voluntary sector organisations, sports clubs, parish and town councils and schools that have already shown a commitment to encouraging and supporting people who are not physically active to participate in sporting activities.

To be eligible, applicants must have in place robust business plans as well as strategies for increasing participation into the future along with plans for monitoring and evaluating their impact.

Priorities for funding are to increase participation, especially among those who are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity, in particular:   

Individuals who are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity.

Groups which are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity.

Children and young people outside of school hours.

There is a 2-stage online application process: Stage 1: The Grants Sub-committee makes recommendations to the full Trustee Board as to which applications should be invited to stage 2.

Stage 2: Those applicants invited to progress have 12 months in which to submit a detailed application for consideration at one of the quarterly Trustees' meetings.

Schools are eligible to apply for projects that will be open to the local community for a significant proportion of each year. There is a two-stage application process. The next closing date for stage -1 applications is the 11th March 2020. Applicants successful at this stage will have until the 12th June 2020 to submit a stage-two application.

Previous grants awarded by the Trust include:  



A grant of £50,000 for a Community Gym at Robert Clack School in Barking and Dagenham.

A grant of £150,000 towards the development of a full size and floodlit 3G Artificial Turf Pitch(ATP) at Frenford Clubs in Redbridge, which will allow the club to expand its existing offer to support more people with disabilities, older people and women and girls.

A grant of £150,000 towards creation of a fully accessible play facility in Albany Park which meets the Plan Inclusive Play Areas (PIPA) standard providing children with disabilities and long-term health conditions with the same opportunities for movement and physical activity as other children.

Apply for Grants of up to £20,000 to Improve Sports and Leisure Facilities (London & Surrey) Grants of between £5,000 and £20,000 are available to small capital projects that aim to help improve existing or to build new sports facilities. The funding is available to not for profit organisations (including Schools) to encourage and support more people to become involved in sport and physical activity.

To be eligible the project needs to be located in one or more of the 32 London Boroughs and/or the City of London, Surrey, South Northamptonshire and Aylesbury Vale. The funding is being made available through the London Marathon Charitable Trust and the current funding priorities are to increase the participation rate of individuals who are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity; groups which are currently physically inactive or who have low levels of activity; and children and young people outside of school hours.

Previous projects supported include:   

A grant of £9,409 for fitness equipment Waltham Forest Pool A grant for £5,000 towards a climbing tower at Stubber Outdoor Pursuit Centre A grant of £15,000 for Mill Hall School for Deaf Children to provide a covered play area.
