many happy participants and winners. The weatherman gave us no reason to complain. Together with the Rokko Island Primary School we shared the creation of St. Martin lanterns. Together we enjoyed celebrating the event with a play and some songs. Saint Martin, a Christian saints gave us a good example of sharing and caring. Through Mrs. Imanari our school community proved that strong will by doing exactly that. Clothes, books and toys with a weight of over 70 kilo were donated and collected and will be sent to support a poor Indian village school in Rajasthan. Continued on the next page

Then there was our journey to the Christmas Market in Osaka, opening the Christmas season and preparing for the upcoming Christmas Eve, which besides a birthday is the most important day for children all over the world. The teachers were active to develop their professionalism on behalf of safety and teaching. We had a refreshing workshop on first aid and we had a weekend workshop on PYP with a focus on Inquiry and the learning environment. Having a close look on the classrooms of you sons and daughters, you can already see the beginning of impact informed by the workshop. In the middle of November I went to take part in the annual regional meeting of Principals of the German Schools Abroad. I could see that we are very different and in a way we represent more strongly a concept of a highly profiled European and International school. In the aftermath of that meeting we were visited by a key German official. Mr. Wegmann gave us a qualified feedback on our current school development. As a result and because we are funded through the German government we will put stronger emphasis on German as a Foreign Language, adapting a curriculum, that leads us to internationally recognized certificates. He agreed with a firm recommendation on to our route to being an international school. And then we had our Open Day, with very interested parents and visitors who seemed to enjoy the family like atmosphere and what we have to offer. With the strong help of PTA, board and teachers, our school was successfully presented. I hope you have a joyous Christmas and lot of time being together as a family. EVENTS - Sports Day 2013 Early Years had a great sports day. They enjoyed lots of fun games and they all received an award for excellent participation.
The primary school had their sport day on the Lawn field. They participated in a range of events. There was the Marathon and various races. There were throwing and jumping activities that were fun. Finally at the end of the day were lots of parent, teacher and student races which were exciting and competitive.

EVENTS - Sankt Martin
At school, in kindergarten or at home children make paper lanterns and then go from house to house, singing St. Martin’s songs and asking for sweets. Sometimes an adult, dressed up as St. Martin, rides on a horse in front of the lantern procession and there is a bonfire.

EVENTS - Shivpura Indian School Update The school community has come together to help the Shivpura School in Rajasthan. With the support of the Church and the Deutsche Schule Kobe/European School around 70 kg of warm clothes, books and toys and almost 4000 Yen in cash was raised. The donations collect by DESK will be shipped with the other items collected at the church and will shortly be sent in three large 20 kg parcels of clothes and a 15 kg parcel of books and toys. Altogether the campaign has collected 120 kg of donations. All of these items will provide relief, comfort and support to children and the families of the school. A small thankyou note has already been sent by Mr. Bhawani Shanker Kusum, the secretary of Gram Bharati Samiti, “Thank you so much for taking too much pain for GBS, the children of Shivpura School and the vicinity. I am grateful to you, your friends and the German School, Kobe supporting this wonderful mission.” Please look out for more updates on the School Blog or the next newsletter

CLASS ACTIVITIES - KG Marble Painting In Kindergarten the students did some experimental painting by placing a piece of paper in a a box with a marble and some paint. Students chose 2 colours to use for their paintings and placed a bit of each colour on the page then painted by tilting the box to roll the marble around through the paint creating wonderful designs and patterns.
The children enjoyed playing with the marble and watching how the colours mixed as it rolled around the box creating their abstract masterpieces. Many of which bear a strong similarity to

Dear Parents, I would like to inform you about the playground conflicts. The normal playground arguments don't consist of hitting but lots of yelling. The younger students need 5/6 help to solve their problems and to help them find a good solution that way they can play safely. The mediator will help the playground a healthy place to play. CLASS ACTIVITIES - Conflict resolution Dear UNICEF, Hello my name is Yoo Bin Kim and I live in Ninomiya I-chome, Kobe, Japan. I am 10 years old and writing this letter for a reason; I have a great quality of human life. My classmates and I were learning about conflicts and for about 2 weeks we researched about UNICEF. We found out that you help about 150 countries which is about 5/6 of the whole world. I do understand that it is very hard to do all this work. When I was learning about you I learnt that you have had an agreement with my favorite soccer team FC Barcelona since the 7th of September, 2006. You are a part of the UN (United Nations) and were established on Dec. 11th 1946 to give emergency food to kids that were in countries that were demolished in World War II. I feel ashamed of myself because I have everything that I need to live but, I want more. When the kids in war zones only want friends, a family, food, drink and maybe a house/shelter. I feel relieved that UNICEF is helping the kids because if UNICEF isn't helping then much more kids would've died. I am trying to make the world a more peaceful place by mediating conflicts that can be solved by me at school. I really wish that I can help you but, the only way to help you is telling other people about you and motivate them to donate money. I really hope you can save many more kids/people in dangerous countries. I will applaud you and please never give up with what your trying to do. I promise if I can I will donate money to UNICEF. Dear Tanya Turkovich, Hello. My name is Nobu, I am 10 and I'm learning about conflict and UNICEF in Deutsche European school in Rokko Island, Kobe Japan. I think our quality of human life is better then a child who lives in a conflict zone. This is because, for now, we don't need to think about war happening and about our well-being. But, we still need to think about well-being because I saw News that says there are people that are infected by the AIDS virus all over the world. I felt UNICEF is brave because they go where the conflict could happen. I found out that UNICEF saved most children and got the Nobel Peace Prize. I learnt that UNICEF is connected to appeasement because UNICEF is the group that helps the children and keeps them safe. I learnt the steps of how to solve problems in school, how we make contact with children in conflict and how can we help them. I think UNICEF is good because they use donations from people to give money to children in poor countries.

CLASS ACTIVITIES - Conflict resolution Dear Tanya Turkovich Hello! My name is Lisa Yokoe. I live in Osaka, Japan near Universal Studios Japan. I live with my parents in a 4 floored house. My family has an orchard. We have trees for oranges, apricot, strawberries, watermelons, plum and more. I was born on 2002-02-28. I am 11 years old now. I go to a school called Deutsch Schule Kobe European School which is in Kobe Rokko Island. My favourite colour is blue, black, purple and white. My hobby is surfing and basketball. My parents has a shop. My dad does a surf shop and my mom does a cafe. The shop name is called Jane. My parents also organize concerts too. I enjoy a good quality of life. After 5 weeks of research about conflicts I found out a lot of information. Also after the research I feel very lucky for how my life has been. Our unit was about different types of conflict. We learned about children in peace and children in conflict. We compared them and most of the class was all ashamed of their behavior and how we are expecting more things for ourselves. We found out that 5/6 { five sixths } of the countries in the world are getting help form UNICEF. Now I know that the UN and UNICEF are really connected to our unit. By UNICEF helping, many people are saved from violence so I really think that having this system is good. One of my wishes is that all children can be in a place with no violence and have a peaceful life. I feel this way because in these 5 weeks I learnt a LOT about children in conflicts and felt very angry and ashamed about what happens. We made posters about child soldiers. The poster has 5 pieces of written work and 3 or more pieces of visual work. I wanted to make a creative poster so I used quite a lot of colors compared to the others. When I was researching about child soldiers I felt really sad and ashamed of the adults who are doing this. I added information about Joseph Kony and about other places with child soldiers. We also learnt about World War 2. We got details about the atomic bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We got information about Hitler too. About Adolf Hitler, Anne Frank and Sadako Sasaki. I was shocked when I heard about the Holocaust and how Anne Frank lived for 2 years in hiding. I know that I can't live like Anne Frank because I live in 2013 and we are a much richer country than before. Most people in the modern times are greedy and only think about themselves. I learnt about the way to solve conflicts at school because when younger kids are in conflicts they usually get me to solve the conflicts. I think that by solving conflicts at school I am helping a in small way, like UNICEF, by helping children. Solving conflicts is getting easier for me and it really gives me experience. I think this experience will help me in the future when I have children or when I am older and need to babysit children. I really want to help save children because by helping you can get a better quality of human life and get experiences. I wish that there were no conflicts in the world so it will be very peaceful and also I wish that many people will help donate money to UNICEF for the children who are poor and unhealthy. We got our information mostly from books, cyberschoolbus, UNICEF website, asking people and our old knowledge. Questions: How many places do you go in a year? Which country have you visited most? How / Why could you make the decision of joining UNICEF? { Because it is the same as risking life } Do you think about death often? I promise to donate money when I can and tell many people about what UNICEF is doing and try to persuade them to donate money so we can help children in conflicts.

Dear Tanya Turkovich, Hello, my name is Tak and I'm 11 years old. Now I live in Kobe, Japan and I think I'm living with a good quality of human life. I found out about this because in my school, I've been recently learning about conflict which includes UNICEF. During the unit, I've researched deeply into kids in war zones that have a low quality of human life. But then, I realized that UNICEF was the biggest human aid organization that helps poor kids. When I learnt about this, I found out myself being very impressed by the work that UNICEF is doing. I also learnt that there are 150 countries that gets help from UNICEF and I was surprised. I also felt impressed because UNICEF does all the work that's hard for people or kids like me.
