Welcome back to school a3er Spring Break! I hope you could all enjoy the first cherry blossoms on ou@ngs together with your children. We are entering the last three months of the current school year. This @me of the year, with its mild temperatures and pleasant weather, is perfect for ac@vi@es outside. We will resume “Lunch at the Lawnfield” on Fridays when it is warm enough (20 degrees Celsius and over) and we will of course con@nue our Wake Up, Shake Up rou@ne. If you haven’t had a chance yet to see our newest rou@ne, visit our Facebook page and watch the video and interviews with the children! Please don’t forget to provide your child with a sun hat for outdoor ac@vi@es as the sunlight can be very strong even in April. From May 1 the “No hat, no play” rule will be applied strictly. A few exci@ng spring events are planned for April: Kindergarten children will go on an Easter egg hunt, have Hanami and pick tulips. Celebra@ng the seasons through tradi@ons and interac@on with nature is an important part of the children’s educa@on, as it helps them to connect to nature and the community. Preschool and grades 1 and 2 will have an opportunity to experience the school environment by night and enjoy ac@vi@es which are different from their learning program by day. willkommen zurück an der Schule nach den Frühlingsferien! Ich hoffe, Sie konnten sich alle an den ersten Kirschblüten bei Ausflügen zusammen mit Ihren Kindern freuen. Wir haben die letzten drei Monate des laufenden Schuljahres begonnen. Diese Zeit des Jahres ist mit ihren milden Temperaturen und ihrem schönen Weeer perfekt für Ak@vitäten draußen. Wir werden an Freitagen, wenn es warm genug ist (20 Grad Celsius und darüber), den Brauch des “Lunch at the Lawnfield” wieder aufnehmen und natürlich auch weiterhin unsere Morgenrou@ne Wake Up, Shake Up pflegen. Wenn Sie noch keine Gelegenheit haeen, unsere neueste Übung zu sehen, dann gehen Sie doch einmal auf unsere Facebook‐Seite und schauen Sie sich das Video und die Interviews mit den Kindern an! Vergessen Sie biee nicht, Ihrem Kind einen Sonnenhut für Ak@vitäten im Freien mitzugeben, da das Sonnenlicht auch im April schon sehr stark sein kann. Vom 1. Mai an gilt dann die strenge Regel: “Ohne Hut kein Spiel.“ Für April sind einige tolle Frühlingsveranstaltungen geplant: Die Kindergartenkinder suchen Ostereier, haben Hanami und pflücken Tulpen. Die Jahreszeiten mit Tradi@onen zu feiern und die Interak@on mit der Natur sind ein wich@ger Teil der Erziehung, da dies den Kindern hil3, Beziehungen zu der Natur und der Gemeinscha3 aufzubauen. Vorschüler und Vorschülerinnen sowie die Klassen 1 und 2 werden die Gelegenheit haben, die Schulumgebung einmal bei Nacht zu erleben und Ak@vitäten durchzuführen, die so ganz anders sind als ihr Lernprogramm bei Tag. Ich wünsche Ihnen eine Frühlingszeit reich an Freuden und hoffe, Sie werden viele Gelegenheiten finden, zusammen mit Ihren Familien Unternehmungen in der Natur zu genießen. The final day of project week offered parents the opportunity to see the Inquiry Cycle in Action. There were a number of presentations of how the students had used the Inquiry cycle in their work.

Classroom Activities Grade ES 1/2
The 3 R’s in Action - The Grade 1/2 ES looked at how they could reduce , reuse and recycle. We found we could use 2 litre water bottles to make planters. We worked with partners to cut open the bottles to make a foldable flap. We all made fantastic recycled planters. From here we took action by going out and planting a variety of seeds: sugar peas, beans and cucumbers. We hope our green fingers will make a yummy harvest.

¨ Aktivitaten in der klasse
Klasse ES & DS 5/6
Kunstunterricht mal anders… Normalerweise finden die Kunststunden der 5./6. Klassen fast nur auf Englisch stae. Im März war es einmal anders, da gab es eine Stunde ganz auf Deutsch. Das war für alle eine ungewöhnliche Erfahrung! Die deutschen SchülerInnen haben etwas über griechische Säulen erzählt und erklärt, wie man diese aus Ton herstellen kann. Das passte zum Thema „vergangene Zivilisa@onen“ der aktuellen Unit beider Klassen. Die deutschen SchülerInnen mussten sich Mühe geben, langsam und einfach zu sprechen. Die SchülerInnen (und der Lehrer!) der englischsprachigen Klasse haben sich angestrengt, um die Erklärungen zu verstehen und ihre Deutschkenntnisse anzuwenden. Insgesamt war es in der Stunde sehr, sehr ruhig in der Klasse. Woran das wohl lag? ;‐) Auf jeden Fall war es ein Zeichen dafür, dass alle den Au3rag für diese besondere Kunststunde ernstgenommen haben. Beim Formen der Säulen war dann die Sprache aber völlig egal und es gab tolle Ergebnisse. Hinterher wurde in den Klassen darüber gesprochen, wie die SchülerInnen den Unterricht erlebt haben. Auch wenn viele der SchülerInnen dies tagtäglich tun, war dies ein weiteres tolles Beispiel dafür, was es bedeutet, sich in einer fremden Sprache ausdrücken zu müssen. The art lesson that was a li4le different… Usually grades 5 and 6 have their art lessons mainly in English. This was different on a day in March where we had an all‐German art lesson. That was a unique experience for all those involved! The German students explained their knowledge about Greek columns and how to build these out of clay. This @ed into both classes’ unit on past civiliza@ons. The German students had to try hard to talk slowly and with easy German. The students (and the teacher!) of the English‐speaking class had to make an effort to understand what was being said and to try out their own German. Overall it was rather quiet in the classroom during this lesson. Now why could that have been? ;‐) In any case it was a sign that the “task” for this lesson was being taken seriously. And with regard to the actual making of the columns the language didn’t maeer at all, as can be seen in the great results. A3er this lesson, students talked in their classes about how they experienced the lesson. Though many of the students do this day by day, it was another great example for what it means to have to express your thoughts and ideas in another language.

¨ Aktivitaten in der klasse Klasse DS 5/6
Meine Felder, Sträucher und Bäume Ich weiß, dass es komisch klingt, aber ich habe jetzt ganz ungewöhnliche Felder auf meinem Hof. Ich habe Bonbon‐ Bäume und Steak‐Felder. Ich habe Keks‐Sträucher und Dosenmais‐Felder. Auch wenn das alles hier nicht nur Felder sind, ist es doch wahr. Ich würde sogar meinen Porsche hergeben, um zu beweisen, dass es wahr ist. Aber wie es dazu kam war, dass ich an irgendeinem Tag Bonbons verloren haee. Am nächsten Tag fiel mir dann mein Steak vom Teller und ich vergaß, es wieder aufzuheben. Und so ähnlich ist es auch mit den anderen Sachen passiert. Zum Beispiel habe ich den Dosenmais nach meiner Katze geschmissen, als sie meine Kekse entührte. Ich traf sie nicht, aber sie ließ die Kekse liegen. Anscheinend habe ich dann auch vergessen, sie zu holen, und nun habe ich Keks‐Sträucher und Dosenmais‐Felder. Der Bäcker Sonntagmorgen um 6.30 Uhr stand ich ausgeschlafen aus meinem Bee auf. Alle schliefen noch und ich beschloss, zum Bäcker zu gehen, um Frühstück zu holen und den anderen eine Freude zu machen. Als ich an einer roten Ampel warten musste, zog ich schnell meine Hausaufgaben raus, die ich für solch einen Fall mitgebracht haee. Als ich kurz darauf bei Bäcker ankam, sah ich, dass eine riesige, haarige, glupschäugige Tarantel im Eingang ihr Netz gesponnen haee. Behutsam nahm ich sie in die Hände und setzte sie auf eine nahegelegene Blume. Dann betrat ich die Bäckerei. Ich war umgeben von Zuckerbrötchen, Schokowaffeln und Marmeladenkuchen. Da ich aber auf gesunde Ernährung achte, entschied ich mich für das Vollkorn‐Möhren‐Brot. Nun machte ich mich auf den Weg nach Hause. Gerade wurde die Ampel grün, ich packte schnell meine Hausaufgaben zurück, als ein Licht mich blendete. Gelassen sah ich nach oben und erblickte ein UFO. Im gleichen Augenblick wurde ich schon nach oben gebeamt. Entspannt segelte ich davon. Es überraschte mich kaum, dass die achtbeinigen Aliens vom Planeten A.S.U. (Alter Spinnen‐Urwald) kamen. Plötzlich fielen sie alle auf ihre acht Knie. "Oh, du Heldin, du. Wir danken dir!" Das fand ich sehr nee. Trotzdem fragte ich sie, wofür sie mir dankten. "Für die Reeung unserer Königin." Ich spürte ein angenehmes Kitzeln auf der Schulter und als ich hinsah, lächelte mir von dort die Königin zu. Es war die Spinne, die ich gereeet haee. Das Spinnen‐UFO war noch so nee, mich nach Hause zu fliegen, wo bereits alle auf ihr Frühstück warteten. Papa fragte: "Ist was Besonderes passiert?" Ich antwortete wahrheitsgemäß: "Nö, heut nicht!" Eine Reise nach Indien von Peter Gonsel‐Brotemann‐John‐Nilkedonner‐Löwenbart Na, ich glaube, es wird Zeit für eine schöne Geschichte. Ich bin einer, der überhaupt noch nie eine Reise gemacht hat und ich will auch keine machen. Ich erzähle euch jetzt mein Abenteuer "Die Reise nach Indien" oder so. Dort in Indien war es sehr kalt. Es lauerten überall Schlangen, Eisbären, Elefanten und Pinguine. Es war doch so heiß, dass ich kaum atmen konnte. Ja und eines Tages in Afrika, dort war eine superlange Schlange, 14 Meter lang. Ach, ich kann es kaum glauben, dass sie so klein war. Und in China, dort war ein Sandsturm, der war so schlimm, dass dort ein Panda sehr braun wurde, so dass die Leute, die Pandas nicht mögen und Bären mögen, gleich schön geknutscht haben. Natürlich die, die Pandas mögen und keine Bären, die rannten gleich so schnell weg wie ein Rennwagen. Doch das war nicht so ungewöhnlich. Nämlich in einem Dorf in Neuseeland, da rennen Leute schneller als eine Schnecke. Ja und nein, ich meine alle schneller als ein Gepard! Naja, die tollste Reise von mir war in dem heißesten Land Kanada! Da bin ich so schön Schlieen gefahren. Es war so kalt. Dort waren vielleicht auch Ren@ere und natürlich Kängurus. Wenn du dich langsam wunderst, warum ich das alles weiß, dann weißt du, dass ich schlau bin. Oh nein, nicht nur schlau, ich hab ja eine Weltreise gemacht, ach, bin ich dumm! Weltreise! Da wunderst du dich, nicht wahr? Es war so wunderbar. Ich war in Indien, dort war es sehr kalt und, ach ja, s@mmt, danke, dass du mich erinnerst, ich habe dir das schon erzählt. Aber das waren nur Indien, Afrika, China, Neuseeland, Kanada. Ähm, und das Roman@schste war in Frankreich, wo ich mich zum ersten Mal verliebt habe. Ach, wie schön und hässlich sie war! Wir haben zusammen den Eiffelturm angeschaut. Sie haee so kleine Augen wie ein Punkt, eine lange Nase, wie Pinocchio, Ohren so spitz wie Elfenohren, einen breiten Mund wie ein Pferd und eine Glatze. Ich hasse sie! Wer könnte sich nur in sie verlieben? Der kriegt ja so eine lange Nase wie sie! Huch, meine Nase! Ich habe doch nichts gesagt! Also, eigentlich ist meine Geschichte zu Ende. Wenn ihr noch mehr über meine Reisen hören wollt, die ich gar nicht gemacht habe, dann fragt eure Schulkameradin Hanna anstae mich! We had an art project where we made examples of the 8 features of civilizations that we have studied. We started by planning what to make, with a brief explanation and notes on the material we would use. We had to use our unit knowledge and could research too. For research, we could look in non‐fiction books on history or crafts. Also, we knew that everyone had different knowledge and information, so we asked others for their knowledge. We started making things like Ancient Roman kitchens and Greek temples. PYP Information and Parent Involvement Inquiry Cycle
When does inquiry happen? Teachers continually encourage or invite the students to actively engage in an inquiry by asking questions or presenting them with provocations to determine their prior knowledge, providing sensory experiences and assisting in expressing or framing genuine questions using the key concept questions. The teaching strategies involve open‐ended tasks that are authentic and that engenders creative or critical thinking. It is important to allow the students the space to consider that inquiry process does not only mean designing an environment that facilitates raising a problem or issue but it also means reflecting on and honoring their breakthroughs and personal learning journey. The notion of inquiry cycle offers a learning framework that does not have a fixed finishing point or starting point and it is reflected through the lens of the students personal understandings. What is the teacher’s role in the Inquiry Cycle? This learner‐centered process deepens the active and authentic progress of the students in the class, due to teacher’s creativity, guidance and resourcefulness. A teacher needs to keep a lot of materials in their resource kit that they can use, in combination with other tools, to meet the differing needs of the students and take the learning engagement of the units to the next level. MISSION STATEMENT WORKING GROUP
Parents are invited to join a working group to look at the development of the New Mission Statement for the school. The Working Group will look at the information collected from the stakeholders (parent community, Staff, School board and other interested parties and work on the key words or phrases that best represent the school and can be used in a new Mission Statement.
