New Richmond FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Team Invited to Participate in International Experience

Imagine our surprise when the New Richmond FFA Dairy Cattle

Judging Team members learned that they finished in first place by just one point at the World Dairy Expo FFA Contest back in October! Team members Austin Raymond, Rachel Skinner, and Tyler Van Dyk had left school that morning at 3:00 a.m. to make it to Madison to compete. With tired eyes, they gave it their all and came out on top! A Note From Your District Administrator Attention Parents: We need your help! Although a parent’s role in their child’s learning evolves as they grow, one item remains constant: You are your child’s learning model. Your attitudes about education can inspire your child and show them how to take charge of their own educational journey. At the School District of New Richmond, our Core Purpose is to inspire every student to learn to his or her potential. This is further supported by our Core Values of excellence, respect, integrity, learning, passion, diversity and collaboration.

Go Tigers!

Research shows that family and community involvement can have a powerful and positive impact District Administrator on student outcomes. According to the annual synthesis: A New Wave of Evidence: The Impact of School, Family and Community Connections on Student Achievement, a research review published by the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory in 2002, students with involved parents, no matter what their income or background, are more likely to: • earn higher grades and test scores and enroll in higher-level programs • attend school regularly • have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school • graduate and go on to post-secondary education As a District, we truly value the partnership with our parents and community to help support our students. We view this collaboration as a four legged stool which creates a balanced foundation. Leg #1-Student, Leg #2-Parent/ Extended family, Leg #3-School District, and Leg #4 Community. The School District of New Richmond uses our strategic plan as a framework of improvement. Our overall purpose of a strategic plan is to build upon the District’s Six Pillars for Success which includes district initiatives for the next 5 years and beyond. The implementation of this plan will ensure that we can offer college and career readiness skills that will further our students’ academic development and social conscience. Below are points of emphasis within each pillar outlining ways we are collaborating with our parents and community! Pillar 1 (Parents and Community) Parents and community are encouraged to actively engage and collaborate in our schools. This can be fostered with parents being a role model for learning, setting aside time to read together, helping your child take charge of his/her learning, and not over scheduling your child. Pillar 2 (Facilities) To provide safe facilities and environments that meet the educational needs of students and staff. Collectively we continue to care for our great facilities. Pillar 3 (Students) Inspire every student to learn to his or her potential and empower students in their own learning. As parents, please pay attention to what your child loves, connect what your child learns to everyday life, and encourage your child to be responsible and work independently. Pillar 4 (Innovative Instruction) High standards, rigorous curriculum and powerful instruction: we must go beyond the basics to ensure that all students become critical-thinkers, effective communicators and responsible global citizens. Parents can assist the District by helping their child practice what they learn at school. Pillar 5 (Staff) Collaborate effectively and participate in shared leadership to enhance professional practice and student learning. As parents, please tune into how your child learns and help them connect what they learn to the world around us. Pillar 6 (Technology) Technology shall be integrated to enhance, improve, engage, and stimulate the learning environment for all students. Together we will work to protect your child’s digital imprint and continue to provide technology to enhance instruction. Page 2

New Richmond School District Strategic Plan - Six Pillars of Success As a District, it is our goal to effectively involve families and the community in everything we do. We look forward to continuing our partnership by building a trusting, collaborative relationship with two-way communications among staff, families, and community members. We also continue to be diligent as we recognize, respect, and address families’ needs, as well as bridge class and cultural differences. Finally, the School District of New Richmond embraces a philosophy of partnership where power and responsibility are shared and where families are effective advocates for their children. As an added resource for you, we are including two of the Pillars for Success posters in this newsletter. Look for the third poster in our Spring Edition District Newsletter. We look forward to a great 2017!

Child Development Days - A Fun and Successful Day The School District of New Richmond held their annual Child Development Days at WITC on November 3rd and

4th, 2016 and approximately 75 children were screened.

All families that live in the School District of New Richmond with preschool age children were invited to participate. Also invited were families with pre-kindergarten children who are new to the district or who have not participated in the past. Child Development Days is a type of child find activity as well as a time for families to learn more about child development and to meet school district specialists. Children were encouraged to participate in a play setting where social, communication, motor and early learning skills were observed. Children’s hearing and vision were also screened. An interviewer discussed any questions parents may have had about their child’s development. Parents had the opportunity to speak with school psychologists, speech therapists and/or early childhood educators concerning the current status of their child’s development. Many handouts on various areas of development were available for parents to take. Also, parents were able to learn more about resources in the community. Additionally, there were free item(s) for parents to take home with them. Various local businesses donated materials for the event. The School District of New Richmond Child Development Days occurs annually every fall. Look for information on the event next fall!

Bravissimi, Paperjack Kiddos! - By Jodi Mealey, Music Teacher

On a personal note, I was completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for music from our community members. The emails, letters, personal conversations... even comments on Facebook were absolutely amazing. And speaking of community support, I want to publicly thank Todd and Kristen Solberg who surprised me with a generous donation to the Paperjack music department shortly after the concert! I am looking forward to purchasing some new music supplies and instruments with the money. I also want to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and staff at Paperjack. They are (no pun intended) instrumental in making the concerts run so smoothly. Of course, it goes without saying that I am extremely proud of the students and all the hard work that they put into preparing for the performance.

The concerts were well attended with around 800 people at each performance. Paperjack students entertained the audiences through song, dance, and instrumental performances. Of course, the 3/4/5 concert would not have been complete without the tradition of a SuperSecret-Song-Selection. This year, students sang, O Holy Night, accompanied by Mrs. Mealey on acoustic guitar as she sang along with the choir. To keep the audience on their toes, a surprise encore was also included, which Bravissimi, Paperjack kiddos! was a one-of-a-kind version of Can’t Stop the Feelin’ Pictured at top: Third, fourth, and fifth grade students sing, ‘O complete with new lyrics and slick dance moves! :-) Holy Night’, with Mrs. Mealey.

Check out the YouTube concert videos through MealeyMusic, or by typing "Paperjack" in the search engine.

Fourth grade students play a song on their recorders.

Kindergarten students sing, ‘I'm Gonna Be Nice, Not Naughty’.

Rio Ford dazzles the crowd with his amazing hip hop dance moves. WINTER EDITION 2017

On December 15th, students from Paperjack Elementary School performed two holiday concerts in the high school auditorium. Children in kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade performed first, followed by a second concert for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Each grade performed 3-4 songs and both concerts concluded by combining grade levels, which created a 150+ member choir.

Art Fair and Carnival - Thank you, NREPA! Each Fall, the New Richmond Education Parent Association (NREPA) sponsor an Art Fair and Carnival. This year, the carnival raised over $5,000.00 which will be used to purchase needed educational items for our elementaries. NREPA representatives presented a check to Hillside, Paperjack and Hillside elementary principals on December 1, 2016. What’s Happening at Starr? The 2nd graders have had a busy month here at Starr! We had our very first Starr Movie Night! Families came together and watched Zootopia. It was a great turn-out and we hope to do another one in the near future. Students have also been working hard on writing non-fiction books. We have used several non-fiction books as mentor texts of how to write our own non-fiction books. The 2nd grade classes will be hosting a writing celebration at Starr on November 22nd at 3:15 for you to see how hard they have been working. Our students had the opportunity to learn about the voting process. We talked about registering to vote, the secret ballot and wrote about “If I were president for a day”. We read Duck for President and they all got to cast their vote for either Duck or Farmer Brown. The 2nd graders voted Duck for President with an overwhelming vote of 68 to 13!

The School District of New Richmond and St. Mary School was pleased to welcome Alison Feigh of the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center to speak about technology safety. Allison presented to elementary and middle school students on November 30 and December 1. A free parent presentation was held at the middle school the evening of December 1. During her presentations, Alison focused on protecting your digital footprint. Strategies taught included protecting personal and emotional information, following your gut instinct (“is this too good to be true?”), and identifying adults in a child’s “safety net.” Students also learned about the power of standing up together as bystanders against cyberbullying. Great feedback was received from students, teachers, and parents about Alison’s presentations on this important topic.

2017 Baseball Camp - Thank you, Seniors! Each year, to run our Spring Baseball Camp, it takes time and dedication from not only our coaching staff but also the athletes in our baseball program. I would like to thank our seniors who graduated last year and led us to a conference championship for all of their help with camps throughout the years in our program. Thank you to Hunter Charland, Parker Coleman, Jordan Fischer, Cameron Hauseman, Austin Juhl, Caleb Manecke and Grant Momchilovich! For the 3rd straight year the New Richmond High School baseball program is holding its Spring Camp! As the Varsity Head Coach, I would like to invite and encourage you to sign up for our spring camp. I would also like to personally invite the parents to join us for the camps to learn what we are teaching and why we are teaching it to your son. In order for your son to improve, they will need to spend time outside of camp and practice working on these skills we are teaching them. It is important for parents to understand and help their player as they develop their skills. Our baseball program believes in teaching the fundamentals of pitching, hitting, and fielding in a way that is easy to learn and fun. We introduce new drills each year and are excited to be working at a very low coach to players ratio at our camp. We have limited space available in the gym and player registration has been full for two straight years. To register please visit nrbaseballclub.org and click the registration link. Please join us for some Spring Baseball! Thank you, Coach Helland

SDNR SOAR Educational Center New Year News - by Rachel A. Sauvola,

Agriscience Instructor and FFA Advisor January 2017 A letter to all SDNR SOAR Supporters:

Our first adventure took us to the 6.5 acre field to knock down weeds, plow and plant winter rye. With help from Ellis and Bob Frank and all the Kruschkes at Crisdhome Farms the process was complete by the third weekend in September. It was great fun to see the new little seedlings as fall turned into winter. We will harvest that crop late summer 2017 to generate income for the project’s needs. On October 28th, three calves were delivered by local farmer, Lance Kamm with help from his herdsman

Rachel Skinner, Sophia Thommes and Austin Raymond halter the SOAR Center calves to move them from their hutches to their big pen in the shed. WINTER EDITION 2017

A dedicated team of students go to the farm in the morning and after school. A warm greeting by Lowell and Karen Volkert on Nov. 7th, brought Curly to the SOAR Center. Curly is a German Fleckvieh Holstein crossbred bull calf that is outgrowing his brothers on the farm. His hair is the softest and is indeed curly. He’s given the students a lot to learn about as he is growing 30% faster than his purebred Holstein counterpart. Since the Volkerts farm organically, the students and I have learned about a whole new set of management practices for things as simple as the common cough and cold treated with garlic and apple cider vinegar. He is a joy to have on the farm!

appreciate Bill’s contributions to our project and look forward to the future. We are hopeful that our partnership can continue with the new management of Form-A-Feed. We are thankful for the Doyle’s at Farm and Home for helping us order in supplies when we need them too. The offer by Greg Christenson and Frontier Ag and Turf to allow us the use of equipment whenever we need it is much appreciated as well. We received some donated straw from Karl Karlson, which was delivered by James Karlson from the Baldwin Greenhouse, to get us started with our bedding needs. It rests on pallets donated by Bill and Cindy Van Dyk to keep it clean and dry in the pole shed. Throughout the winter, our snow is being plowed out at the farm by Cory Krumm and his parents, Steve and Amy. Mike Montello and the staff at Bernard’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM helped with the great snow issue too by generously leasing us a 4X4 RAM truck to get us up and down the driveway, along with being the go to vehicle for hauling students and supplies here, there and everywhere.

Agriscience students are actively engaged each day at the SOAR Center and are led by student managers Sophia Thommes and Austin Raymond. A dedicated team of students go to the farm in the morning and after school. New student leaders are emerging all the time and bring along their family and friends to get involved. We welcome all as we grow the program! Many hands make light work! First and foremost, thank you for your contribution of time, talents and treasure this year! It has been such an exciting process as we kicked off the 2016-2017 school year with the humble beginnings of the SOAR Educational Center. If you haven’t heard, SOAR stands for Student Opportunities with Agricultural Resources. We are so excited to share with you the progress that has been made so far and what it means to us as we soar further toward our dreams and our vision for this project.

Marshall Kemling, a graduate of NRHS. Two Jerseys and a Holstein bull calf began their journey with the Agriscience students out at the SOAR Center. Lance and his brother, Ryan own Nova Farms where they specialize in these breeds and farm conventionally. The Kamms are also allowing us to borrow four calf hutches called PolyDomes where the calves are being raised for the first few months of their lives. The calves have grown from the mid 75 pound mark to over 250 pounds to date. They have nestled in on the coldest nights and have been very well taken care of by students this semester.

FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Team Exciting News - by Rachel A. Sauvola,

Agriscience Instructor and FFA Advisor

Imagine our surprise when the New

Richmond FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Team members learned that they finished in first place by just one point at the World Dairy Expo FFA Contest back in October! Team members Austin Raymond, Rachel Skinner, and Tyler Van Dyk had left school that morning at 3:00 a.m. to make it to Madison to compete. With tired eyes, they gave it their all and came out on top! Austin also topped the Ayrshire class receiving first place for that particular breed. These same young people have competed for a few years on the St. Croix County 4-H Dairy Judging Team coached by Chuck Kruschke. Chuck graciously assists the FFA kids too as the 4-H and FFA competitions don’t occur on the same time table. With the feeling of pride on their side, the students expected to receive a plaque and/or perhaps a ribbon. Seeing that we have never placed so well in the 18 years I have been the advisor here, I had no idea what was in store for us! Imagine my ultimate shrieks of joy and disbelief when I opened the padded envelope containing a plaque Page 18

FFA Dairy Cattle Judging Team Exciting News - by Rachel A. Sauvola,

Agriscience Instructor and FFA Advisor

Travel will take place June 21-July 4th. Students will compete at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland which is their premier farming event and again at the National Dairy Show in Luxembourg, Belgium. Students will judge animals and participate in showmanship competitions and participate in a national cattle sale. We will be educated as to how they judge cattle first, learning from local breeders and dairymen who are members of the Scottish Young Farmer Association. They will get to stay at Young Farmers homes and learn first hand how the dairy industry operates in other countries. We will all get to tour international treasures and create memories to last a lifetime. Seeing Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, riding the Eurostar train under the English Channel, cruising the Rhine River...all amazing experiences for our youth! Organized through a service called Agrotours, Inc., the experience is one that comes at a price, as each team member and chaperone needs to generate $4500-5000 each to attend. Fellow student, Sophia Thommes will attend with us while Tyler’s grandmother, Amy Johnson and I serve as chaperones. This means we need to raise close to $30,000 in just four months. We are hopeful that our local agricultural communities and supporters can help us get there, little by little as each dollar will help us achieve our ultimate goal. For those that do contribute to our international experience, we will be hosting an event upon our return to showcase all that we do and learn while we are away.

Royal Highland Show and now ...a magic I will have real live materials to share too. All of the young envelope with people attending are deeply an invitation to ensconced in agriculture. Austin’s family owns and partake in the operates the Raymond Dairy, where Austin is taking his International own money, time and talents to broaden the herd from all Dairy Judging Holsteins to some Ayrshires Tour to Scotland, too. He actually exhibited one of his Ayrshires at the World Belgium, England Dairy Expo and is a consistent exhibitor at county, district and Germany! and state competitions. Tyler Van Dyk’s family owns and operates West Croix Farm and have a top notch herd of Holsteins. Rachel shows cattle for Crisdhome Farms and the Kruschke family at county, district and state shows. Sophia is just getting started in judging dairy cattle, but has a rich knowledge base of meat goats and sheep, along with beekeeping and gardening. She serves as the Student Manager of the New Richmond’s SOAR Educational Center, while Austin is the Assistant Manager there. They are leading the efforts whereby students are learning how to raise meat animals and vegetables on 20 acres for school lunch. They are teaching younger students and couple with community members to truly define SOAR - Student Opportunities with Agricultural Resources. These students work hard each and every day and I am so incredibly proud of them. They are four of the genuinely nicest students in our entire school and I cannot wait to share this experience with them. They deserve to be on board to gain a better understanding of Europe, a look at global agriculture and the dairy industry, an avenue to showcase their knowledge and leadership skills and create memories to last a lifetime. If you’d like to help us achieve our goal, I can be reached at 715-243-1761 or by email at rsauvola@newrichmond.k12.wi.us - Donations can be sent to the New Richmond FFA ℅ Rachel Sauvola at 701 E. 11th Street New Richmond, WI 54017.

I immediately called the students and asked them if they were sitting down...and then shared the fantastic news that we were taking our skills on the road...across the ocean...to Europe! They were as shocked as I was for this ultimate experience! It turns out that all first through third place teams from 4-H, FFA and post-secondary competitions were invited to participate! This also means that NRHS grad, Ellis Frank is coming too as his team won the post-secondary competition. Ellis has also been coached by Chuck Kruschke and has interned at Crisdhome Farms. How cool is it that we will all be there together?!

There is excitement brewing in the air as our pigs left the Animal Learning Center at the high school in late October to go to market - up more than 30 pounds from when we received them - and the new Katahdin and Katahdin-Dorper hair sheep are settling in. With Warren and Lori DeBoer as community partners, the students are learning all about hair sheep vs. wool sheep, their uses and their management practices. We also had the opportunity to tour some local establishments this semester too. Food Science students went to Lakeside Foods to watch carrots being canned. They also had the chance to visit Deer’s Food Locker to see meat cutters in action. Both places were such fantastic sites for students to get their questions answered and truly see the process of food making it from the field to the table. In addition, they toured the Future Farm in Baldwin to see tilapia and greens in production Other exciting community there. partners that have shared information and resources with the students include Heather “We are so very Adams with her Flemish Giant fortunate to rabbits, and Ethan Meyer with his service dog, Stetson. mentoring program starting up in January of 2017, with Kindergartners and 2nd Graders at Starr Elementary. The new program has been named: S.T.A.R.R. Mentoring Partnership. The acronym stands for Students working Together with Adults to build Rewarding Relationships. Our tagline is "Nothing you do for children is ever wasted" by Garrison Keillor.

This mentor partnership is a school-based volunteer mentorship program where adult community members volunteer their time as mentors to provide academic, social and emotional needs for our students.

Many students are looking for guidance and encouragement from an adult figure and just a small time commitment from an adult in our community would mean the world to a child. This builds strong community relationships, creates goodwill and helps shape the future leaders of New Richmond. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, or if you would like further information, please contact:

There would be a lunch commitment 2 times per month Jenny Franklin, Starr Elementary-715-243-1569 or and it would be from 11:45 am-12:45 pm for a 2nd grade Cheryl Emerson, CE Director-715-243-7423 student and 12 noon to 1 pm for a Kindergarten student. We would pay for the mentors' lunch (we are currently
