Daughter of Vincent Price to present program at Church of Christ Aug. 18 Live FAT to Die Empty Janice Turner lived in the Atlanta, Georgia, area and was quite content with life until she sensed God placing a burden on her for the Lakota Native Americans in Allen, South Dakota. At the time, the call from God may not have made sense, since there were closer ministries to Native Americans, but for her, God’s call did not have to make sense. It was plain and simple to her, if God says go, then you go. So beginning in 2008 she made several 1,300 mile trips to build relationships and to enact a culture of change in an area that resembled a third-world country. Each December, she would take Christmas gifts for the children, each gift with the child’s name on it. She would bring troubled teens home with her so they could experience Atlanta. She addressed the problem of joblessness by helping to establish a bakery, a dollar store and a silk screen business. Her goal was to help unemployed residents find jobs and, through employment, help reduce depression that joblessness creates. As she built relationships, the doors for sharing the gospel of Jesus opened up and over the last several years she was able to see over half of the homes become led by Christians. On one such trip to South Dakota in 2013, she received a call from her doctor back home in Atlanta that she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The diagnosis did not stop her passion and drive to live out her call from God as she continued to make trips west until the cancer destroyed her health. In January 2016 she died. My friend Handel told me the story of going to visit her shortly before her death. His purpose was to encourage her, but as so often is the case, she encouraged him. As they were saying their goodbyes, she drew him close to her and in a weakened, soft voice challenged him by saying, “Handel, die empty!” When I was told that story I began to wonder, “How could I die empty?” How could I live my life in such a way, that when it was

all said and done, people would say of me, “David died empty!”? In an earlier conversation with Handel, he had shared an acronym with me that I believed applied to my question. The acronym was FAT - Faithful, Available, Teachable. We do not have to be a Peter, John or a Paul for God to use us. The disciples were a diverse group which included rugged fishermen, a despised tax collector, a day dreamer and at least one radical. God always uses people who trust their life to God daily and are willing to be “Faithful” in their obedience to Him in all the circumstances of life. When Jesus challenged the disciples to leave everything behind and follow Him they made themselves available to Him. Little did they understand what following Jesus would look like but they followed. Their response was much like Isaiah’s in the Old Testament when he made himself “Available” by telling God, “Lord, send me!” Another reason God used the disciples was they were “Teachable.” Even though they would spend three years with the greatest Rabbi of all time, they had a lot to learn, and not only learn, they would need to learn how to apply it to their lives. II Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (ESV) We need to be teachable through studying and applying the principles found in God’s Word. Jim Elliot, who was killed along with four other men by the Huaorani people of Ecuador as they were trying to share the Gospel, once said “Wherever you are, be all there.” That statement has been a driving force in my life. Wherever God calls me, I must be all there. Furthermore, in order to “Die Empty” I must live FAT. Live FAT so you, too, can die empty. David Guess Pastor, Amsterdam Community Church of God
