Look at the Past

A look back at a gathering in Deersville

Harvey Lee Dunlap Harvey Lee Dunlap, age 85, of Freeport died at 9:58 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, in Carriage Inn of Cadiz. He was born April 3, 1933 in New Athens, Ohio, a son of the late Charles Vincent Dunlap and E. Bernice Wilson Dunlap. He was a graduate of Flushing High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Harvey was a veteran of the United States Army. He was employed by Bob Harris from Flushing for several years doing excavating work. He was the

first employee of Island Creek Coal Vail Mine of Freeport where he was a bulldozer operator and was still working for them when they closed. Harvey was also a farmer his entire life. Surviving are four children: Roger (Gladys) Dunlap of Freeport, Lee Ann Dunlap of McConnellesville; David (Bobbie) Dunlap of Freeport, Amy Bates of Freeport; a son-in-law, Kim Luyster of Moorefield; 11 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; a brother, James (Maxine) Dunlap of Antrim; and two nephews: Charles Dunlap and Gregory (Connie) Dunlap both of

Antrim. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Luyster in 2016. Services were held on Friday, July 20 in Koch Funeral Home in Freeport with pastor David Koch officiating. Burial followed in Greenmont Union Cemetery in Freeport. James M. Bove James M. Bove, 70, of Cadiz, died Saturday, July 14, at Trinity Medical Center, West in Steubenville. He was born Nov. 6, 1947 in New York state, a son of Fran Bove, of Texas and the late Michael Bove. In addition to his parents, he was

preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Butkus Bove in 2016. Surviving are six children, Brenda Cadriel of Cadiz, Sherry (Rick) Parker of Napoleon, Becky Snyder of Cambridge, Paula Molyvex of Canton, Sandy Holloway, and Patrick Holloway, both of Cadiz; many grandchildren and great

grandchildren; and a brother, Michael Bove of New Philadelphia. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family at ClarkKirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz. Interment will be in Cadiz Union Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.clark-kirkland.com.

Paul Richard Luyster Paul Richard Luyster, age 74, of 78125 Kinsey Orchard Road, Freeport, died at 3:50 p.m. Monday, July 16, surrounded by family after a three year battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 28, 1944 in Freeport Township, Harrison County, Ohio; a son of the late Lorence Reynolds Luyster and Eva Irene Greenwalt Luyster. Paul graduated from Lakeland High School, class of 1962. He

was a member of the FFA and did janitorial duties at Freeport and Lakeland during high school. He retired from the Freeport Press, Inc. after thirty-seven years as plant manager and customer service representative. He also worked with his father at Greenmont Union Cemetery, mowing, digging graves, and setting stones. Paul was a member of the Freeport United Methodist Church, charter member of the Freeport Farmers Sportsman Club, the Harrison County Coon Hunters Club, and Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, where he was chief for a few years. He enjoyed farming, hunting, and fishing. Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Sandra Sue Hibbs Luyster. ey were married July 19, 1963. Also surviving are a son and two daughters: James R. (Beth) Luyster of Newcomerstown, Susan L. (Scott) Baker of Freeport, and Ferna E. (Eric) Williams of Ocean Mississippi; three Springs, grandchildren Jordan R. Winn,

Quinten E. Williams, and Rayna L. Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Dixie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Maxine Wilson and Irene Fuller and two brothers, an infant Ray Luyster and Roy Luyster. Services were held on ursday in the Freeport United Methodist Church with pastor David Koch and pastor Sandra Cappel officiating. Following Paul’s wishes, his body will be cremated and buried at a later date in Greenmont Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Truman House, New Philadelphia or the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department. Amy Marie (Gerdeman) Bardall Amy Marie (Gerdeman) Bardall, 48, of Freeport, Ohio, formerly of Delphos, passed away after a brief illness on July 17, at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio. She was born May 20, 1970 at Van Wert County Hospital to Bill and Mary Elaine (Miller) Gerdeman of Delphos. Surviving in addition to her parents, is her husband of twentytwo years: Jeffrey omas Bardall. ey were married October 28, 1995. Also surviving are her two children, her pride and joy: Tate (Emily Wesley) Bardall and Taylor Bardall, both of the home; father and mother-in-law: Tom and Marge Bardall of Freeport;; a brother, Shawn (Liz) Gerdeman and a sister, Gina (Eric) Wallace, both of Delphos; nieces and nephews: Grant and Macy Wallace and Madeline, Jacob, and Cole Gerdeman; aunts and uncles: Janice Kaskocsak of Dayton, Jerry Miller of Kalida, Kevin (Ann) Miller of Cloverdale,

Dan (Judy) Miller of Cloverdale, Joe (Brenda) Miller of Ossian, Indiana, Jane Hilvers of Ottoville, Joan (Bill) Ellerbrock of Ottawa, Donna (Bill) Ranes of Leipsic, and Connie Miller of Kalida. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Amos and Miller; paternal Wilma grandparents, Ed and Helen Gerdeman; aunts and uncles: Connie Miller, Jerry Hilvers, Tom Miller, Rolland Miller, Earl and Doris Gerdeman, Ella Mae Gogel, Val Kaskocsak, and Robert Gerdeman. Amy was a 1988 graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School where she was a cantor at the church; she had also worked as a nurse’s aide at Delphos Memorial Home. She had attended e Ohio State University in Columbus; she then transferred to Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s where she earned her BSN. She worked as a nurse at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, and Dover Surgery Center. Amy then received her Nurse Practitioner License from Wheeling Jesuit in Wheeling West Virginia and practiced at the Freeport Family Health Center and was currently employed at Trinity Hospital Twin City in Dennison. She was also an EMT with of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, was a bible school teacher at the Freeport Presbyterian Church and played guitar in her band, “Two for the Road.” She sang at many weddings and had a huge impact on the Freeport community from her

first day living there. She had a true green thumb and could grow anything. Her flowers around their house were always picture perfect. She and her husband completely rebuilt their 1800’s home back to its original state, right down to the fire places. Amy was a strong supporter of her husband and son in their farming business. Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 21, in the Freeport Presbyterian Church, 101 Pine Street, Freeport. e Freeport Friends 4-H Club will be hosting a time of fellowship during visitation at the Freeport firehouse across the street from the church. Visitation will also be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Harter and Schier Funeral Home, Delphos. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 23, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Charles Obinwa officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, 119 East Main Street, Freeport, OH 43973 and to Trinity Hospital Twin City, Attn: Melinda Rainsberger, 819 N 1st St., Dennison, OH 44621. Mary Elizabeth Bower Mary Elizabeth Bower, age 62, of Bowerston, formerly of Scio passed away, Wednesday, July 18, in Community Hospice House, New Philadelphia. Born Dec. 17, 1955 in Steubenville she was a daughter of Fred Guthrie, Sr of Scio and the late Mariam Walker Guthrie and Harry Adams. Mary graduated from Jewett-Scio High School in 1972 and worked for the former Canal Dover and Bakers Foods in Scio. She was a member of

the Scio United Methodist Church and was in the bowling league at Valie Lanes in Jewett, serving as a past secretary. She also enjoyed finding antiques and other bargains at area yard sales. Surviving in addition to her step father are her sons Robert (Tammy) Bower of Sherrodsville and omas Mitchell (Gwen) Bower of Sanford, Maine; her caretaker, friend and father of her children Gordon “Mitch” Bower of Scio; grandchildren Fred, Destiny,

Jonathan, Angel, Nicole, Danielle, Jared, Seth and Sam; great granddaughters Raelynn and Ava; step brother Fred “Greg” (Rhonda) Guthrie of Scio; step sister Diane (Hugh) Hart of and a half-brother. She was preceded in death by a half-sister. Services will be held Tuesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. in Koch Funeral Home, Scio. Friends may call Monday July 23 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ronald D. Carter

Ronald D. Carter, 80, of Harrisville, Ohio, passed Tuesday July 17, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Adena, Ohio, on May 12, 1938, a son of the late Harold W. Carter and Sarah Edith Childers Carter. Ron was retired from the Village of Harrisville and Y&O Nelms #2 mine, he was a proud member of the Harrisville VFD
