Custer Observance is approaching NEW RUMLEY - is year’s June 2 observance in New Rumley will feature Lieutenant Charles C. DeRudio's account of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He was a lieutenant in Company A of Major Reno’s battalion and a survivor who witnessed much of the battle from a hiding place near the Little Bighorn River. e lieutenant’s story has been used as a basis for many books and newspaper articles. Nicola Sgro of Chesterfield, Mich., will portray the lieutenant. He is Italian born and has been re-enacting since 1996 and portraying the lieutenant from 1999 to present day. He has participated at the Battle of the Little Bighorn Reenactment in Hardin, Montana both through the Chamber of Commerce, and at the Crow Agency near the original battlefield, where he charged more than 25 times the hostile Indian camp as part of General George A. Custer’s command. Nicola has been a Battle of the Little Bighorn student since an early age, and is a living historian of Count DeRudio, the only Italian officer in the famed 7th U.S Cavalry. He features firsthand account of the battle through the eyes of the actual Count basing his knowledge upon the complete biography of DeRudio published in 1996 by his most famous historian, the anthropologist

Dr. Mandel Haas of Carrollton will be back with his Civil War cannon along with artillery and infantry re-enactors to explain their equipment and give demonstrations of their use. Time will be given for guests to enjoy lunch at the New Rumley United Methodist Church and visit the Custer Museum and Center.

Adena to hold benefit for “pizza man” on June 3 ADENA – e Adena Community Center is hosting a benefit for Adena’s Joe Whitacre, affectionately known as the “pizza man.” e event is being sponsored by the Adena Heritage Days Committee and will be held June 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Soup, sandwich, desserts, drink and salad will be served to benefit Joe in helping with his medical costs do to various
health issues. e cost to participate is just a donation where a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction will also take place. Joe is a graduate of Cadiz and had his first job at Roman’s Pizza where Di Angelo’s Pizza currently sits. Joe said he’s suffered from diabetes and twice has had his right leg amputated, once below the knee in 2016 then again just above it this past March, when
enough of the infection was not caught the first time. And if that wasn’t enough he’s also gone through the rigors of fighting leukemia, which he said is now in remission, though, he’s been told more tests are needed since his white blood cell count has risen. At one time, Joe said he weighed over 400 pounds but is now down to 200-plus. In 2016, he said he spent most of his days in various
hospitals from Wheeling, to Martins Ferry and Bridgeport. An induced coma, four blood transfusions and the second amputation later, he said he’s feeling better.
