SANDUSKY — Just like the miles of vineyards in the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region, the always-popular Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival is growing. To celebrate the area’s heritage as the largest wine-producing region in the nation prior to Prohibition, the traditionally one-day event on the shores of Lake Erie is expanding to three days of wine tasting, gourmet food eating and art show shopping. The wine festivities begin Thursday, Aug. 12, with a wine-tasting cruise aboard the Goodtime I, where passengers will enjoy a leisurely sight-seeing cruise on Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie and witness a spectacular sunset. The cruise departs the Jackson Street Pier at 7 p.m. and returns to port at 9 p.m. The cruise is sponsored by Specialty Wines, and will feature Italian imports. Wine selections are included in the cost; tickets for cruise are just $25 per person and can be purchased at the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Welcome Center. Hors d’ouvres will be provided by Creative Cuisine. The festivities kick into high gear on Friday, Aug. 13, and Saturday, Aug. 14, at the waterfront Sandusky Bay Pavilion (605 E. Water St., Sandusky) with the official Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival, now in its seventh year. This event features 12 Ohio wineries, gourmet food, live musical entertainment and an artist’s showcase. The festival grounds will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Nagoya offers a little something for everyone BY TIA WOODEL Editorial Intern PORT CLINTON — Owners Mel and Barb Ayers, along with the staff at Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi, celebrated its five-year anniversary this May. Located at 3975 E. Harbor Road, the restaurant is open 4:30 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday. At Nagoya, there are many options for diners to choose from. According to Barb, hibachi dinners — where the chef prepares your meal at the table in front of you — are available and include steak, chicken and seafood options. Fried rice and Yummy Sauce, which is also sold by the quart at Nagoya, come with the hibachi meals. Guests can also choose to eat at the sushi bar where fish is flown in from all over the world several times throughout the week to ensure freshness. If customers would prefer a

meal not cooked in front of them or one that isn’t cooked at all, they can order from the traditional menu. Specialty dishes such as filet mignon, chicken Batayaki, rack of lamb, seabass dinner and Lobster Batayaki are also offered. “Our customers always have an option of different areas to dine in the restaurant as well as different foods to choose from,” said Barb. “Nagoya is unique because we offer something so different compared to any restaurants within miles. You can enjoy dining here while on a date, it’s the perfect place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary because of the groupdining environment, and the kids love the experience. It puts parents at ease when going out to dinner.” The restaurant runs specials seven days a week. Two or three featured sushi rolls, an appetizer and an entrée from the kitchen are posted around the restaurant and change weekly. Other special features include

martini of the month; Wind Down Wednesday at the Waterfront Patio Bar, when there’s a special $5 menu; and Monday Night Sushi during the winter months when which sushi, specialty rolls and appetizers are half off, are also popular specials. Nagoya offers live entertainment on its patio from 6 to 9 p.m. every Sunday until Labor Day. “We are so happy that our customers are able to enjoy the waterfront patio, which some say is ‘Catawba Islands’ Best Kept Secret’,” Barb said. “We have such a great staff and without their dedication and talent, we wouldn’t be where we are today. It’s always nice to walk into a place of business and see familiar faces, and our staff continues to develop great relationships not only with our locals but our seasonal visitors,” said Barb. For information about Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi, call 419734-6400, visit www.nagoyaohio.com or Find Nagoya on Facebook.

MARBLEHEAD

Polka, halupki and more Marblehead Ethnic Heritage Days and the annual Halupki Festival are coming up on the peninsula. The weekend starts off Friday with Polkas in the Park at James Park off Ohio 163. Wayne Golob Band will play from 5 to 7 p.m. with Hot Dog Dave and Knights of Columbus Fish Sandwiches on hand for food and refreshments. Guests should bring their lawn chairs. Music on Main Street will kick off Saturday, Aug. 14. Accordionist Ed Klimczak will play from noon to 3 p.m. on the patio of Jodie McCallum & Company and Wayne Golob Band will perform from noon to 3 p.m. at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church. Sunday, Aug. 15, there will be the Whitey Priebe Polka Fest Ladies Auxiliary Cancer Benefit held by the Marblehead VFW Post 7572. Magic Buttons accordion ensemble will perform noon to 1:30 p.m. outdoors

and Frank Moravcik Orchestra of Cleveland will perform from 2 to 6 p.m. in hall. The music is $5 and food is available. The 54th annual Halupki Festival will be Sunday, Aug. 15, at Holy Assumption Orthodox Church at 114 E. Main St., Marblehead. Free parking is available in the St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church Parking Lot (at the Lighthouse) and a free shuttle bus will go to the festival. Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Halupki and ham dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Refreshments, raffles, craft vendors, church tours and Rusyn Psyanky (Easter Egg) decorating demonstrations are also going to be available. Raz, Dva, Tre Russian Folk Ensemble, Wayne Golob Band with Ed Klimczak and Frank Moravcik Orchestra will be the live entertainment starting at 11:30 a.m.

August means barbershop is back on the islands For the 63rd consecutive year, barbershop chords will be ringing on the Bass Islands. Approximately 15 quartets from Ohio and neighboring states will present a free concert on the back porch of the monument visitors center at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13. Joining the quartets will be an 80-plus member men’s chorus who will be singing the national anthems as the Canadian and American flags are lowered. As in the past, several nationally recognized quartets are expected to be in the lineup. In case of rain or threatening weather, the concert will take place at the school gym, using the entrance across from the ball diamond. This year’s program will be dedicated

to the memory of Mary Ann Market who passed away in April. Her contributions to the islands were truly admirable. She served on many boards, including the Perry Group and the Lake Erie Historical Society, serving as president of the Perry Group for two terms, 2005 to 2008. Donations from the concert will go to The Perry Group and the Historical Society. Also of note, Mary Ann’s son, Scott, and grandson, Jacob, Scott’s son, have both sung in barbershop quartets. Then at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, the Middle Bass concert will take place at the town hall — where it all started. The public is welcome to attend.

WINE from 3 seum will host tours and activities. The Lake Erie Shores & Islands once featured huge vineyards that spread from east of Sandusky to the western region near the bay because of the lakeshore climate. The Toast of Ohio event was developed to celebrate the area’s winemaking heritage. Today, dozens of wineries still operate in the region. Participating wineries include: Ferrante Winery, Firelands Winery, Hermes Vineyards, Maize Valley Winery, Matus Winery, Meier’s Wine Cellars, Mon Ami Historic Winery, Myrddin Winery, Quarry Hill Winery, St. Joseph Vineyard, Stoney Ridge Winery, and Viking Winery. Other event sponsors include Ohio Grape Industries, Ohio Magazine, Lake Erie Shores & Islands-East Welcome Center and the City of Sandusky.

The finest and freshest steak & seafood available!

To the citizens of Port Clinton and the surrounding area, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have wished us well and have welcomed us to Port Clinton. I have met a number of fine people in this community and have definitely made some new friends. The Island House Restaurant and Lounge was built by Conrad Gernhard in the year 1886 and some of its history is displayed in detail in the rear foyer of the hotel. In the past, such notables as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Clark Gable, Joe DiMaggio, General Douglass MacArthur, Bob Dylan, and three United States Presidents have graced the Island House with their presence. As you know the Island House Restaurant and Lounge has undergone many changes in the past few years. We come to this area with the acknowledgment of this restaurant’s rich history and we want to return it to its former high level of service and value for your community. We welcome your input, and encourage you to suggest how we might make your visit with us more enjoyable. We will be adjusting the menu and staff as warranted. We ask for your patience while we make these adjustments and most importantly, we ask for your business to bring the Island House Restaurant and Lounge to its full potential for your future dining pleasure. If you’ve made reservations for

the upcoming year, it is important to call our reservation desk (419-734-9271) to confirm the date and time of your event. Thank you, and with highest regards,

Donna S. Smith
