Huron’s Own Time Capsule to Be Dedicated in Fall

Buckeye Spirit Comes Alive in Huron

In a final commemoration of Huron’s Bicentennial, a time capsule will be buried near the Boat Basin Building this fall. The Huron Bicentennial Committee and the Huron Historical Society are now seeking suggestions from residents for items that will represent what living in Huron is like as the community begins its third century of existence. Items should reflect the bicentennial theme of “Lake, River, Land and Life”. Brainchild of Rob Harst, designer of the Huron Bicentennial Logo, the capsule is being crafted by employees of Janotta and Herner Inc., Monroeville, as a gift to the city. The capsule design is a box within a box, which provides long-term protection of the chosen items. The outside larger box will be made of stainless steel, and the inner one of copper. Both will be welded and sealed to withstand the effects of being underground for a century. A granite marker engraved with the bicentennial logo will be placed over the capsule, and will be dedicated in October. Members of the Huron Historical Society are selecting the special items to place in the 12-inch by 12-inch by 18-inch capsule. They will be at the Rotary Fine Arts Festival Raffle tent on August 13 and 14 to take suggestions. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to purchase a plate for the box for their family/business names, a phrase or comment. Single 2- by 4-inch brass plates will be sold to individuals and businesses and screwed to the interior box. The interior box will hold plates on all six sides; the design should accommodate 114 brass plates. The sale will begin at the Huron Rotary Art Raffle tent. So, Huron residents, put on your “thinking caps” and come up with items representing today’s community and culture that will fit in the capsule, which will be opened in 2109 and may be viewed by the child or grandchild of a Huron kindergarten student today.

The Ohio State “Buckeye Spirit” will again come alive at the Huron Boat Basin at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, when the Erie County Ohio State Alumni Band performs. It’s become an annual event that Buckeye fans and many others both young and old enjoy. This year’s current Ohio State drum major Jason Stuckert from Avon Lake will perform and lead fans in a Huron Boat Basin version of “Script Ohio.” The Erie County Ohio State Alumni Band has been performing in the area for more than 25 years. Band coordinator Ben Lindsley said: “The band will surely play all the traditional Buckeye songs like “Hang on Sloopy” and “Buckeye Battle Cry,” plus a wide variety of music sure to please everyone.” There will be traditional marches, patriotic songs and the unique sound of the all brass and percussion band. The band is comprised of Ohio State Alumni and current marching band members from the area.

Cleveland Family Visits Firelands Doctor Who Saved Son’s Life Erik Knotts of Cleveland is an active 11-yearold boy who likes to play hockey, golf and read. He is going to be in the sixth-grade and his mother will proudly tell you that Erik earns straight As in school. But roughly 10 years ago, his parents, Brian and Kristine, noticed their son was becoming ill. The family was in Lakeside/Marblehead at the time for an annual United Methodist Church conference. “I knew he was sick, but I wasn’t sure how bad,” Kristine said. “I called our pediatrician. She told me to get him to a hospital right away. I looked in the yellow pages and found Firelands Regional Medical Center.” The Knotts family quickly loaded up the car and headed to the emergency room at Firelands, where physician Edward Radatz, D.O. took a look at little Erik, who at the time was just a year old. Radatz said that Erik had a purple polka-dot rash all over his body that progressively got worse. After assessing the boy, Radatz diagnosed Erik with meningiococcemia, which is basically meningitis-type infection throughout the entire body. Typically meningitis affects

only the brain. “It is a total body shutdown,” Radatz said of the type of meningitis Erik had. “It shuts down blood supply to the extremities. He could have easily died.” Erik was given medication to open up the blood flow and was then taken by Life Flight to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland where he spent 62 days in the pediatric intensive care unit. As a result of the meningitis, Erik ended up having both legs amputated, but is a normal, active young boy, his mother said. Kristine credits Dr. Radatz and the immediate care he received at Firelands Regional Medical Center for Erik’s full recovery. “The right diagnosis and antibiotic saved (Erik’s) life,” Kristine said as she lovingly looked at her son. The Knotts family recently paid Dr. Radatz a visit on the 10th anniversary of when Erik came into the emergency room at Firelands. “We worked as a team,” he said about saving Erik’s life. “The care of everyone involved and a lot of prayers gave them their child back.”

Ohio Citizen Action to Host Campaign

“Sergeant Durbin Leaves a Legacy”

The Ohio Citizen Action will be campaigning in the Huron area from now until the end of September. They conduct door-to-door canvasing every 10 to 12 months to facilitate a public outreach program. The committee is a non-profit organization, non-partisan, political organization. Their focus is on environmental and consumer advocacy issues. The organization is registered with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and their personnel have been subjected

BY JOHN T. MAJOY Sunday, August 8, will mark the end of a career for Sgt. Kevin Durbin, who is retiring after 25 years of service. Kevin joined the department in 1985 and has served in many capacities during his career. While there will be many memories and accomplishments he will leave behind, his biggest legacy will be the marine patrol unit. For the last number of years, our marine patrol has grown by leaps and bounds because of the efforts put forth by Kevin. Our marine patrol hours have increased and presence has served as a blanket of protection for our community. Kevin has also served as the Terrorism Liaison for Erie County Law Enforcement, which required many hours of training, reporting and documentation. Both of these responsibilities require a great deal of time and Kevin has done a great job being able to balance his schedule to meet the needs of his respective positions. During his career Kevin has received a number of awards to include officer of the year, the Chief ’s Service Award, good conduct and good driving awards. He has also received two lifesaving awards. Promoted to sergeant in 1999, Kevin served as the supervisor of the night shift for the past 11 years. While the majority of us were sleeping, he was on patrol and helping to keep our community safe. His leadership and longevity has left its mark on the Huron Police Department. On behalf of the Huron Police Department, I want to publicly thank Kevin for his dedication to this community. You have left your mark and have served us well. Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy retirement.

Firelands to Construct New Medical Office Building Firelands Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce acquisition of about four acres of property in Berlin Township to expand access to its quality medical services, specifically for the residents of Berlin Heights, Milan, Collins and surrounding communities. “This is part of the overall commitment of Firelands Regional Medical Center to bring health-care services into the communities we serve. We are pleased to add this new medical office location in Berlin Heights, complementing our existing physician locations in Huron, Norwalk, Port Clinton, Perkins, and Sandusky,” shares Leslie Mesenburg, communications specialist with Firelands Regional Medical Center. The property purchase is located on Routes 113 and 61 in Berlin Township and includes both the southwest corner and the southeast corners of that intersection. The site plan, recently approved by the Berlin Township Zoning Board calls for a 2,000 square-foot, one-story medical office building. The building will be erected on the southwest corner property with the southeast corner being left as undeveloped green space. “Firelands expects to break ground on this project in late August/early September, providing all necessary permits are in place to begin the work at that time,” explains Darrell Boling, director of plant operations
