Boating Safety

Sean Logan, Director of Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Mayor Marilyn Shearer cut the ribbon at the Huron Boat Ramp Monday morning during the Dedication Ceremony.

Around Town

This Week’s Special

BY JOHN T. MAJOY, CHIEF OF POLICE The Huron Police Department recognizes the importance of boating safety and we take active steps to keep the waterways safe. You may have seen our Harbor Patrol boat in the Huron River or on the waters of Lake Erie. Our mission is to ensure the safety of boaters and swimmers, and to enforce Ohio’s boating laws. MAJOY As a reminder, boaters who operate vessels powered by greater than 10 horsepower and who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, are required to successfully complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators approved boating course. This can be completed

in a seated course developed by ODNR Watercraft, the U.S. Power Squadron, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. This course can also be taken online at http://www.boat-ed.com/oh/. Children under the age of 12 may not operate a personal watercraft (ie. Jet-ski, Sea-Doo, etc), under any circumstances. Children 12 to 15 may operate if they have an education certificate and there is an adult (18 or older) on board with them. Young adults ages 16 and older may operate if they have an education certificate. Huron Police officers are certified marine patrol operators and can issue the Ohio Department of Natural Resources vessel inspection stickers. The inspection contains a safety checklist for the essentials of safe boating. If you would like to schedule an inspection for your vessel, contact the Huron Police Department at 419-433-4114 or by e-mail at huronpolice@cityofhuron.org.

City Officials to Review Sign Ordinance During a recent Huron City Council meeting, a discussion ensued relating to the posting of signage throughout the city, specifically non-permanent advertising being posted by local and out-of town businesses and individuals for advertising purposes. The current ordinance prohibits sign placement in right-of-ways, usually referred to as the area between the roadway and either the telephone pole or sidewalk. Local businesses have shared opinions that signs placed in the right-of-way areas aid in attracting customers and asked for council’s consideration in reviewing this ordinance. As a result of these concerns, city officials have begun a review of the current ordinance. The City would like the opinions of local residents and businesses on this matter. Written comments can be sent to: City of Huron, ATTN:

Clerk of Council, 417 Main St., or emailed to cgibboney@ cityofhuron.org. Residents can visit the city’s Web site to view the codified ordinance in its entirety, including viewing descriptions of each type of sign and the regulations for these signs (Planning & Zoning Code Chapter 1127-Special Provisions, Section 1127.03 Sign Regulations). In other city news: In the very near future, the City of Huron will unveil a new Web site. The site has been designed to promote ease of navigation, information and improved communication. New features will include search functions, alerts, newsletters and surveys for subscribers. Once launched, the public is encouraged to subscribe to the site in order to keep informed of upcoming meetings, events and topics of interest.

United Way Offering Prescription Savings Cards United Way of Erie County, Inc. is helping to lower the cost of medicine by providing free drug discount cards. “No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions. That is why we’ve partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription discount cards to everyone in Erie County,” said Pam Colbert-Brumbaugh of United Way of Erie County. “To date, people in our community have already saved over $40,000 by using the cards. FamilyWize cards immediately lower the cost of medicine by an average of 30 percent or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. By presenting the FamilyWize card at their pharmacy, customers will save on the cost of their prescription medicine 80 percent of the time. “So many people are struggling with the high cost of medicine and need help right now. The FamilyWize card provides immediate savings on prescription medicines, with no paperwork or forms to fill out” said Dan Barnes, co-chair of The Family Wize Community Service Partnership. The cards can be used by all community members, not just people without insurance, and can also be used by people with health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare. The FamilyWize card is free and for unlimited use and is accepted at 95 percent of pharmacies nationwide. There are no age or income restrictions. People with internet access can go to www.FamilyWize. org to print a card, look up drug prices and obtain a list of participating pharmacies. Cards can be found locally by contacting the United Way at 419-625-4672 or emailing uwec@bex.net.
