This week the ARTirondack Committee would like to feature 6 of the 22 local artists who participated in the ARTirondack Public Art Project in celebration of Huron’s Bicentennial. The project began earlier this year and will wrap up on August 11 with the “ARTirondack Auction. The Auction will take place at 6:00 pm at The Nia Center at Kalahari Resort. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.00 per person. Join us for complimentary bidding paddles, appetizer buffet, cash bar and lots of fun! All of the ARTirondack chairs are placed throughout the community and are available to be viewed up close. There is amazing detail on these wonderful chairs you do not want to miss! Stop by the Huron Chamber of Commerce for a booklet of information and a listing of their locations. “Think Pink; Sponsor: The Chapman Insurance Group; Artist: Christine Crawford; Huron resident, Christine Crawford was born and raised in Seville Ohio. A self taught artist, Christine has shared the passion for cross-stitch, needle point and knitting with her mother and friends. Wanting to bring something unique and different to the project, Christine decided to “Think Pink. As a female business owner in the area, Christine’s inspiration for her chair was to promote breast cancer awareness. Christine and her husband, Randy, are parents to a 4 year old beagle named Pelee. Sailing is a passion and lifestyle for all three of them. Christine and Randy are both USCG Master Captains, active in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and members

of the Huron Yacht Club where Christine is the sail fleet captain. “Lazy by the Lake; Sponsor: Firelands Regional Medical Center; Artist: Krista Kolinko; Art has been Krista Kolinko’s passion since she was a child. Mostly self-taught, she has worked on many projects including trompol’oiel, murals, sign paintings, and other crafts. For the last nineteen years, she has worked at Kiddie Koral and shared her talents by painting classroom murals and doing art projects with the students. Her chair, “Lazy By the Lake was inspired by her love of the outdoors, gardening and taking it easy. “Nelumbo of the Estuary; Sponsor: Marconi’s Restaurant; Artist: Andrea Elek; Elyria resident; Andrea Elek loves to paint and has found her niche in pastels. She receives much satisfaction in giving away her paintings of people, animals and nature scenes to friends and family. Not long ago, she had the opportunity to take a canoe trip at Old Woman’s creek. Seeing the vibrant American Water Lilies up close and personal in their full beauty was her inspiration for her chair, “Nelumbo of the Estuary. “Castles in the Sand; Sponsor: Huron Parks Fund; Cottage Designs and John & Sheila Ehrhardt; Artist: Carol Lescher; Norwalk resident Carol (Sprankle) Lescher and her husband Red are 1956 HHS graduates. Naturally a creative person, Carol took up painting as a hobby in 1983 after her two children left home. She has taken instructions from local artists and

A self-taught artist, she enjoys working with watercolor or acrylic paints to create nautical and nature scenes. She participates in several local art shows each year, sharing her love of the area through her work. “Proudâ€?; Sponsor: Angry Bull Steakhouse; Artist: Davy Davis; Davy Davis is a self-taught, free-lance artist from Sandusky, Ohio. He has turned a job loss three years ago into an opportunity to purse his passion for painting. Throughout the year, he uses his talents as a scenic artist for many area productions including several staged at BGSU, the Huron Playhouse, the Sandusky State Theater and the Cleveland Playhouse. You might see Davy around town in his signature lime green Volkswagen Camper Van. Cathy Black’s Homecoming If you saw Cathy Black only once a year by attending her annual concert in Huron, you would still have a good sense of her as a person and performer. Starting in 1994 at age eighteen, Cathy began sharing original compositions with her hometown crowd which chronicled the loss of her mother to cancer, the heartbreaks of teenage romance, the joys of family, and the thrill of Huron athletics, most notably with “Dreams and Dedication”, which was the most requested song on the North Coast on 102.7FM leading up to the 1993 Division IV State Championship game. Later, Cathy shared “I’m Still Here” with the crowd to commemorate the loss of Ryan Foss and Michelle Saunders of Huron, and four other young Ohio women all attending BGSU lost in a tragic car accident in March of 2002. That CD sold nearly 3,000 copies and helped to raise over $180,000 in scholarship funds throughout the state of Ohio. Most recently, it was a sad honor to share “The Sum” with the crowd, which was written for Bellevue native, Jon Martin, a friend of Cathy’s who was killed serving our country on his third tour of duty in Iraq. Sales of the CD helped generate funds for Martin’s family and the song itself helped a community grieve their fallen hero. The former Miss Ashland shared the ups and downs of competing in the Miss Ohio Scholarship Program with her friends in the audience when she was the First Runner-Up to Miss Ohio 1999 and bemoaned the dreaded swimsuit competition as the likely culprit for her demise. A ready sense of humor sets the tone despite the obstacle of the year. For example, when she was dating her now-husband, Steve, it was the crowd at the Amphitheatre who provided back-up with chants of, “Ask her to marry you!” for Cathy when she made it obvious she was ready for a proposal…which came not long after her 2000 concert. Through the years the crowd has graciously allowed Cathy to try on various genres of music from the swooning standards of the 1940’s and Big Band favorites, to Broadway’s toughest tunes and more recently Jazz and Blues. Today, living in Peoria, Illinois, Cathy enjoys fronting for her band RealityNox, which has tackled Classic Rock with tunes such as “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zepplin and modern hits from P!nk, Kid Rock and Katy Perry. Whatever the theme, one thing

remains the same: Cathy is committed to delivering a solid vocal performance every time she takes the stage. She is driven by a pride and appreciation for the audience that her late father, John, instilled in her years ago. Sunday, July 19th, Cathy will perform her 15th annual show at the Huron Municipal Amphitheatre. The show is free and open to the public. Working the crowd with solid tracks from the past five decades, Cathy will prove once again why she has been asked over and over to return to Huron for this event. She won’t be on stage alone; other local artists plan to join Cathy throughout the show to share their talents with the crowd. However, it’s likely that the star of the show will be Cathy’s protruding belly, as this year she tackles the gig eight months into her first pregnancy. Perhaps with a waddle more than with style, Cathy still vows to give the crowd a show to remember. Is there a doctor in the house? While there’s no reason to believe her little one will be making a surprise appearance early, you just never know. And in this case, Cathy may literally live up to her promise to “deliver” on stage. Don’t miss the chance to support local artist Cathy Black returning for her favorite homecoming show to date! Date: Sunday, July 19th; Time: 7PM-9PM; Where: Huron Municipal Amphitheatre; Admission: Free; Website: www. cathyblack.com.

RYE BEACH PROPERTY OWN-

The residents of Rye Beach invite the public to celebrate with them. On Saturday, July 18, from 1 PM to 7 PM, the Rye Beach Property Owners’ Association will present Rye Beach Day, at the Rye Beach Park. The park is located in Huron at the north end of Atwood Place at the lakefront. To get there turn off Cleveland Road across from the Burger King and keep going north until you find the park. There will be plenty of food: barbecued chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and bratwurst. Sides will include corn off the grill, coleslaw, pasta salad, beans, grilled corn , and chips. Dessert will be brownies and pie. Live entertainment will be presented from 2 PM to 5 PM by Casper, a karaoke group. There will be bingo from 1 PM to 2 PM and at 5 PM. Other activities will include a horseshoe tournament, great raffles and a beer garden. Activities for children will include: a decorated bike parade, a dog in costume contest, musical chairs, water balloon toss, egg relay, go fish, sidewalk chalk, printed nails, biggest gum bubble, decorate a visor and decorate a door knob.

The Association is currently selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle. The first winner will collect 25% of the total ticket sales, the second winner will take 15% and the third name drawn will get 10%. Drawing will be at 5 PM. Ticket holders will not have to be present to win. You can call 419-433-7703 to get information on buying tickets. Rye Beach is one of the oldest communities along the Huron shoreline. When initially platted as a summer cottage community in the early 1900s, the subdivision included 529 lots. At least twenty-five of these lots, nearly all with cottages on them, have been swallowed up by the lake. Also, a large portion of the park area, including a sand beach that extended nearly 200 feet along the water, is “gone”. When the former farm property was divided into lots in the early 1900s, the park covered more than seven acres. Only slightly more than three acres remain. Nearly all the money raised on Rye Beach Day will be used to “keep the lake away from our front door.” The Association is constructing a break wall that is designed to protect the Rye Beach Park from the lake’s “darker side”.

Huron Alumni All-School Reunion The final celebration of the Huron Bicentennial Year will take place on Saturday evening, September 26. The Huron Alumni Association is staging a community wide celebration for any Huron resident, present or past, anyone who attended Huron Schools, lived in or even just passed through our community. This will be a joint All-School Reunion and Huron Community Birthday Celebration. The party will be held at Mesenburg’s Plaza Place on Saturday evening, September 26, to round out Homecoming Week. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 5:30 PM, followed by dining and dancing. The dinner fare for the evening includes a pork and chicken dinner with all the trimmings. A program, then music, will follow with dancing to the sounds of everything from the 40’s to the present. The merriment will continue until 11 PM, at which

time you may repair to your home, exhausted from a whole year of celebrating! The entire evening’s enjoyment can be yours for only $24 per person. That includes the meal and the evening’s entertainment. In deference to the weakened economy, we think that price is very reasonable and anyone should be able to attend. However, the downside to the low price is that we have only 500 seats for the dinner-dance and they WILL GO FAST. We suggest you reply before August 15. We urge you to fill out the form below and mail it in as soon as possible. You may reserve for yourself, as a couple, or with others up to eight at a table. We will be recording the orders by postmark or email time stamp, and when the seating capacity is reached, we will have to cut off orders. So don’t be disappointed. Get your group together and your reservation in immediately.

The “Boat” Float The Hit of the Parade The Huron River Fest Parade was one of the best in recent history. Thanks to the Huron Lions Club for managing it year after year. Thanks also to Dick and Evie Durkin, their friends and neighbors and the

businesses listed below who worked hard to build that terrific float depicting the highlights of Huron- the shipping industry, the lighthouse, and our beaches. Huron is certainly a “Great Lake Place”!

Gardening Plant a Cut-Flower Garden Here we are in the heat of summer, we have patio parties or just like fresh flowers indoors around us, and the plants outside are not right to use for cut flowers. Start thinking about this problem now, jot down some notes MARY STRAYER, MASTER GARDENER and you will be ready next year to add some striking flowers that are great to cut, and that keep well in your vase. Look at your gardens now, and think of those individual flowers in a vase. Sometimes it helps to hold a vase in your hand and raise it up to where the flower appears to be in the vase. This gives you a good idea if you want to pick and use this variety of flowers. After looking and knowing what you already have in the garden, take notice where the new plantings will be placed.

If they are close enough to the house to be really noticed, you need to plant flowers which compliment your home, and other plantings around the home. For instance, if you have a gray house, and already have burgundy, red or pink used heavily around you home, you may want to use that same color again when you purchase new plants. If the plants are away from the home, you can choose any color you want, and be very creative with the process. Consider annuals like salvia, cosmos, sunflowers, and cockscomb to have season long color available. Then look for perennials like coneflowers, Beebalm, Black-eyed Susan’s, Liatris and yarrow, and plant these flowers for later, June-Oct. blooms. Roses and lavender are both wonderful for fragrance in your homes, as is ‘David’ Phlox. Don’t forget that you may want some filler plants like baby’s breath and some greens from the Flax plant or possibly some branches from trees and shrubs already in your landscape. Personally, I depend upon Purple Plum, Daylily Ingredients 1/4 cup capers, rinsed and dried Extra-virgin olive oil for drizzling, plus 1/4 cup for the dressing 1 1/2 lb. thin-cut chicken breast 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar Coarse salt and black pepper, to taste 3 romaine hearts, trimmed and chopped 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1/2 cup pitted black ol-

leaves, and the tall Miscanthus grasses for height and texture for my bouquets. Consider a spike plant, like foxglove, gladiolus, and cluster plants like alliums for height in your bouquets. Now when you cut your flowers and foliage from the garden, don’t take all your flowers from one place; instead, go around the garden and take 2-3 here and there, so you don’t leave ugly empty holes in the flower beds. Cut your stems long as possible, and remember most will get shortened again to fill the arrangement out correctly. Carry a bucket of water with you as you cut, and put the stems of the plants in as soon as you cut them. When you start your arrangements, remember to always put your fillers and foliage plant in first, and then the flowers. It makes it easier, and they always appear more professionally done. Don’t forget to put an aspirin in each arrangement, as the aspirin makes the flowers hold better. Happy Gardening.

Classes for two age groups are available--children grades kindergarten through third will meet from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and children grades fourth through sixth will meet from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Parents will participate in group sessions and will have the opportunity to observe their child, get direct instruction on how they can help facilitate learning, and learn to be an advocate for their child. Call the FTMC Pediatric Therapy Department at 419-6631975, ext. 3040 or toll-free 800-589-3862, ext. 3040 for complete information on this class. Scholarship applications are available upon request. Class sizes are limited. Registration is required and fees apply. The summer pediatric therapy program has been offered since 2001. This summer, the pediatric team will offer over 10 unique programs for preschoolers and school-aged children designed

to meet a variety of children’s needs. For more information, go to ftmc.com and click on hospital services, then pediatrics. Since the early 1980s, FTMC has provided outpatient pediatric therapies including physical, occupational, speech/language and audiology. In 2006, as part of the FTMC Rehabilitation Center ’s expansion, a unique area, “The Kids’ Place for Therapy and Learning, was designed for young patients’ special needs offering a full range of services. Its specialized therapy team offers individual and group therapy for children of all ages and diagnoses. Licensed therapists supply children with an environment conducive to learning while still giving them an opportunity to play. About 200 children visit the pediatric therapy department weekly and around 50 of these children receive more than one therapy—physical, occupational and speech.

Upcoming disc golf clinic Disc golf is one of the best lifetime fitness sports. It is easy to learn, a healthy activity and accessible to all ages and fitness levels. “If you can throw a Frisbee and you like to have fun, you can play disc golf, said Nancy Nickoli, FTMC’s director of volunteers. The Fisher-Titus Medical Center Auxiliary will offer a disc golf clinic from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 18, at the Norwalk Reservoir. With the popularity of disc golf and the availability of a course right in Norwalk, the local organization decided to sponsor a clinic taught by local disc golf-

ers. An occupational therapist from FTMC’s Ralph & Alice Walcher Rehabilitation Center will begin the morning with stretching tips and warm up exercises for participants. “We want to promote a healthier lifestyle with an activity that young and old can participate in, said Nancy Nickoli, FTMC’s director of volunteers. Disc golf is similar to regular golf. But, instead of using golf clubs and balls aiming at a hole, disc golf players use golf discs and aim for a disc hole pole—a pole extending from the ground with chains and a basket where the disc lands. The object of the game is to complete each hole in the fewest

number of throws, starting from a tee area and finishing at the disc pole hole. Cost for the clinic is $10 and includes one disc. The Auxiliary will have additional discs for sale. Lunch also will be available for additional cost. Proceeds benefit the FTMC Auxiliary. For anyone who can not attend the July clinic, an additional clinic is scheduled for September. To register and for more information, call Nancy Nickoli at 419-660-2117, Ext. 6563.
