Around Town Huron Youth Connection Photography Show The Huron Youth Connection and the Boys & Girls Club of Erie County took part in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America ImageMakers National Photography Contest this year. We mounted our local photography show in the Gallery on the lower level of the Huron Library from March 25th through March 30th, 2009. The show was also displayed at Fifth Third Bank on Milan Road in Sandusky for three weeks in May and June. The photos were judged by three local professional photographers: Brenda Culler, ODNR Public Information Office, Mike Foster, Huron Hometown

News, and Sandy Wright, The Wright Place. Our winners of the local competition were grouped by age. In the 10-to-12-year-old group, our first place winner was Telia Matthews of Sandusky, with her photo Wheels and Angles. Our 13-to-15-year-old group prize went to Ashlyn Risner of Huron, for her photo Eye on the World. Zachary Kleinschmidt of Huron took the 16-to-18-yearold prize for his photo Mysterious. These three photos went on to the Regional Level contest, hosted in June by the Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club in St. Louis, Mis-

souri. Zachary Kleinschmidt is also in the running for a Boys & Girls Club ImageMakers Photography scholarship. We wish all these young photographers the best of luck. We would like to thank everyone who came to our Open House and Photography Show in the Huron Library, and to the Photography Show at Fifth Third Bank. We also thank Gene Wright for the time and expertise he has shared this year with the Photography Club at the Huron Youth Connection. Community support makes all the difference!

Local Families Can Benefit from A FUN Exercise Program in Their OWN Homes The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter has joined with the Ohio Department of Aging and the Benjamin Rose Institute to implement a free program that will help both individuals with memory problems as well as their family members who are caring for them. This new program is called Reducing Disability in Alzheimer’s Disease (RDAD). The RDAD program is designed to help teach older adults who may suffer from memory problems how to do some simple exercises to improve their overall health. The program also teaches family members about symptoms to watch for and how to care for

persons with memory problems. This program hopes to improve the ability of the person with memory problems to carry out activities of daily living while also helping family members provide assistance to their relative. A specially trained professional will come to the home for 15 sessions, each session lasting about one hour to teach exercises to the person with memory problems to help improve strength and balance and trained professionals will also teach family members how to assist their relative with these exercises. Family members will also be asked to keep a record of their

Area Health Care Advocates Petition Change A group of area health care advocates for reform gathered at Sandusky Farmers’ Market on Saturday June 27 to petition for change. They were part of a national day of advocacy for health care change. Over 100 signatures were gained and information distributed on reasons and methods of change. The petitions have been faxed on to President Barak Obama of the White House, to Ohio Senators George Voinovich and Sherod Brown, as well as district U.S. House Representative Marcy Kaptur and House Speaker Harry Reid. The petition reads: “We, the undersigned, support single-payer health care as the most efficient, effective, and humane policy for achieving President Obama’s three basic principles of Health Care Reform: 1. Reduced Cost, 2. Guaranteed Choice, 3. Ensure all Americans of quality, affordable Health Care.”

Kathy Murphy, from the advocates, explains that the group believes that a singlepayer system, much like Medicare, is the best reform system because of its control of costs and restriction of paperwork to a central service. “Though Obama’s plan does not presently include this, we feel we must as the long term answer.” Nurse Ann Smith added, “We do support the much needed reform that Obama is working for as a first step. It is long overdue and will benefit all.” Another organizer, Larry Smith, commented “We were moved by the overwhelming support of the citizens as well as their troubling accounts of problems and needs for better health care.” The group also had a petition signing at the Mulberry Herb Festival on Huron’s Bogart Road, and will have a table at Sandusky Community Days on July 4.

First Families of Huron and Huron Township Our earliest pioneers came into a wilderness with wild animals, no shelter, and miles between another homestead. They cleared land, built homes and roads, and were the foundation for the beautiful Huron township and Huron we have today. During this Bicentennial, we wish to recognize these hardy pioneers who came to the township prior to 1830, and the settlers who came prior to 1850. The Huron Historical Society will award membership in the First Families of Huron to descendants

who can document their line back to a Huron Township ancestor. The Huron Historical Society will assist your search for your family tree back to the ancestors. Workshops will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 6:30pm. We are located in the lower level of the Huron Public Library and are open Fridays from 1 to 3 pm or call us 419-433-5009 ext. 243 for an appointment. Space is limited so call and let us know you plan to attend.

Gardening When selecting berries choose ones that are plump, as this is when they are the juiciest. Look for consistent color, and remember that berries do not ripen after picking, so what you see is what you get. They should be clean, and free of any decay. Stains on the containers really means bruised or otherwise crushed fruit. When you get the berries home, handle them gently, rinse off with cold water, and place them in a colander or other container that allows good air circulation. Do NOT soak the berries in water. Pick over them; look them over well before consuming. If you plan to refrigerate the berries, do not wash them first. Want to save some for winter use? Wash and allow the berries to dry. Then put into containers and freeze. If you want the berry to keep its shape, freeze on a cookie sheet first, then place in containers and freeze. It is not necessary to add sugar to the berries. Be sure you label your berries to type of berry and date frozen. I try to use up my summer supply in 6 months, as they tend to deteriorate after this time period. If you want to grow your own berries, you can plant them

It’s the Berry’s Take advantage of the seasonal berries, especially the raspberries that are coming on right now, in your garden. You can still buy strawberries in the local grocery store, and soon blackberries will be coming on locally. MARY STRAYER, MASTER GARDENER Look in our local grocery stores, and go out into the country side to the farm markets, and roadside stands and you will find blueberries as well. The fall raspberries will be on in September, and they are great eating as well. Why so much excitement about berries? Well federal government has advised that we need the berries, as well as apples, oranges and cantaloupes because they are high in antioxidants, which means they destroy free radicals in your body that could lead to cancer and heart disease. Remember we are told to have 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day, and ½ cup of these fruits makes one serving.

in the fall, but it is much better to wait until spring. You can purchase them at local nurseries, green houses, or general merchandise stores, or order through catalogs. If you use catalogs, order the very earliest as you possibly can, as bushes shipped later have to struggle more to grow well, as most are shipped bare root. This means it is not in a pot, and is dehydrating already. Berries are great in jams and jell, and there are many commercial recipes on the market. Nothing is better than fresh berries, mashed with a little sweetener (sugar or substitute) over ice cream or homemade shortcakes. This past week, I prepared a luncheon for a friend, and put together strawberries and mulberries, mashed them only slightly, and poured them over angel food cake broken up into individual serving dishes. Then I mixed up one small package of gelatin, diet of course, and only used 1 Âź cup of hot water to make it. I poured this over the angel food cake as well, and refrigerated for 2 hours. It made a wonderful dessert, light, and very tasty. Give it a try, and Happy Gardening. Questions: email Mary at mstrayer@msn.com and I will try to answer you in a coming article. Thanks.

Next at the Huron Playhouse A heart-warming and ‘deliciously funny’ family comedy, Over the River and through the Woods by Joe DiPietro, is the second production of The Huron Playhouse’s 61st season. It will run nightly, July 7 through July 11, 8 p.m., at the McCormick Middle School on Ohio Street, in Huron, Ohio. Experience the lovingly frustrating connection between a devoted grandson and his two sets of Italian-American grandparents. Nick is a single guy from New Jersey whose parents have retired to Florida, but whose beloved and sometimes-annoying grandparents are still very much around! In fact, he routinely dines with all four of them every Sunday. When Nick announces that he is moving to the West Coast to accept a dream job, the fun and scheming begin to keep him in New Jersey close to them. Humorous and poignant, the wonderful characters and story celebrate the strength and importance of ‘family.’ The ensemble cast features single grandson Nick (Matthew Philip Nersinger, Rochester, NY), maternal grandparents Frank (Jimmy Wilson, West Milton, OH) and Aida (Megan Miller, Gettysburg, PA); paternal grandparents Nunzio (Aaron Mann, Fort Wayne, IN) and Emma (Kaitlyn Majoy, Reynoldsburg, OH); and arranged love interest Caitlin (Jennifer Lefsyk , Niskayuna NY). Dennis C. Seyer (Cape Girardeau, MO), who served as director and scenic designer for last year’s production of Rumors, returns to serve as director and scenic designer for this family comedy. Technical Director is Kevin Nelson (Lake Villa, IL); Esther Iverson (Bowling Green, OH) is costume coordinator; lighting designer is Bryan Kaschube (Missoula, MT); Kevin Babbitt (Harrison, OH) will be the production stage manager assisted by Peter Mol (Oconomowoc, WI); assistant to the Director is Alexandra May (Cortland, OH); sound designer is Devin Nee (La Crosse, WI); and properties supervisor is Peter Mol (Oconomowoc, WI). Please plan on making your summer memorable by returning for the rest of our season:

Pleasurable Palate Therapy Teaches Sandusky Resident the Art of Eating Alex Webb of Sandusky has not eaten since birth. His nutrition for the past 20 years has not consisted of fruits, vegetables and meats, but instead has come from a feeding tube in his stomach. But, all that is changing thanks to VitalStim Therapy offered in the Speech Therapy Department at Fisher-Titus Medical Center’s Ralph & Alice Walcher Rehabilitation Center . Like 15 million other Americans, Alex suffers from dysphagia, the inability to swallow. For most of the one million Americans newly diagnosed every year, dysphagia is often a side effect of stroke, a neurological disease, cancer or other serious illness. Alex was born premature and had a feeding tube and trach (to assist with breathing) placed at birth. He also has a history of low muscle tone, a mouth/jaw malformation, and was tongue-tied. All of these factors contributed to Alex’s difficulty swallowing. Alex has been a long-standing patient of Dr. Glenn Trippe of New Beginnings Pediatrics in Norwalk . After recent dental work made it possible for Alex to close his mouth completely, Dr. Trippe believed that despite his long history of not eating by mouth that there was hope. That’s when the pediatrician referred Alex to the Speech Therapy Department at FisherTitus Medical Center in Norwalk for swallow therapy. “It has been a long and difficult road for Alex. He is such a brave and courageous young man,” said Dr. Trippe. In October 2008, Alex began VitalStim Therapy, a new electrical stimulation treatment device. Within three months of treatment, therapy had produced a startling effect and for the first time in his life, Alex was able to eat. “He has made magnificent progress in the past few months,” Dr. Trippe said. “VitalStim and the other therapies at FisherTitus have been very helpful to him and have really improved his quality of life.” While his diet is still in the soft food stage, Alex is progressing toward a long-awaited meal of steak and potatoes. His most requested condiment – Tabasco sauce! “Alex’s progress has been phenomenal,” said Laura Lloyd,

The Type V PFD must also be used in accordance with its label and owner’s manual. Each PFD must be U.S. Coast Guard approved and in good and serviceable condition, in appropriate size for the wearer, and readily accessible to each person on board the watercraft at all times. A PFD label should be affixed to every PFD. Moreover, the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s website has pictures of each type of PFD. This information is available at www.dnr.state.oh.us under the boating section. Special rules apply to children and their use of PFDs. No person shall operate or permit to be operated any vessel under eighteen (18) feet long with a child less than ten (10) years of age onboard unless the child is wearing a PFD. Ohio law also requires life jackets to be worn regardless of age when a person is riding on a personal watercraft and for persons water skiing or being towed by a similar device. Certainly, ODNR recommends that all persons boating wear PFDs at all times. ODNR estimates that eighty percent (80%) to ninety percent (90%) of all boating fatalities are the result of drowning.

Other income that will have an effect on your next refund/balance due is unemployment, Social Security, agreements to reduce your debt balances on loans or credit card balances, taking funds from your retirement accounts. Failure to adjust your withholding could result in potentially smaller refunds or may cause you to owe tax rather than receive a refund next year. Help for adjusting your withholding can be found at IRS. gov. The IRS withholding calculator on IRS.gov can help a taxpayer compute the proper tax withholding. There are other aids on that web site or you can call H & R Block for a personal review.
