Rev. Roger’s Reflections Think with me if you please of a time when you’ve had to say “good-bye”. To a special person in your life or a place – perhaps a home. Maybe a job that you dearly loved. You had to move away from a town where you enjoyed living – a neighborhood or a street, school, playground and park, golf course or boat, family and friends…even a car REV. ROGER – us guys can remember saySKELLEY-WATTS ing goodbye to our first car and breaking up with our first girlfriend, and whichever one gave us the most trouble. I still remember the first time a friend of mine moved away. Our Nashville neighborhood was settled by young families having “boomer” babies, and most of us stayed until high school graduation. But like Charlie Brown, there was a cute little red-haired girl named Jill who lived behind us. We would hang out together, play on my backyard swing set, and talk over the fence. One day she announced tearfully that her family was moving. I can still see her walking away for the last time, and feel the pull on my heartstring. We’ve all “been there, done that” haven’t we? This is the season of transition. We’ve just said “goodbye” to our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. Graduation excitement is tinged with nostalgia for the past - knowing that things will never, ever be exactly the same again. Many of us have been through divorce, as adults, children, or teen-agers. And as impossible as the situation may have become, from persons I’ve counseled there are always regrets, guilt feelings aren’t there? “What if I had done this or that? How are my actions affecting others?” Even when we’ve tried and prayed every path possible to make it work out and it can’t. And, of course, many of us have had to say “good-bye” to a parent and/or spouse, sibling or friend as they have graduated to the next life beyond what we can see on this earth. How do we truly say,”good-bye” in a way that is not just maudlin and sad, but celebratory, victorious, appreciative, and hopeful? Making the experience about new life, facing the future unafraid, looking over the horizon toward a better brighter day, “somewhere over the rainbow”?

Mulch cools the ground too much. 2. Benefits: -cools the roots -less watering and less splash 3. Limitations -cools roots too much for hot crops -harbors disease & slugs in a wet year 4. Hardwood bark great; grass clippings O.K. 5. Cypress mulch or treated grass clippings NOT O.K.

The Scented Garden Many questions have come to me, one from as far away as Georgia, and many of these questions are about scented gardens. When I think of a scented garden, I do not think of a scented plant here and there. Instead, think of a grouping of plants. A grouping of lilacs on the back edge of a flower bed for instance is a MARY STRAYER, MASTER GARDENER great example of a placement of scented plants. Think of different scents for different areas of the landscape. By my back patio, I have an Akebia vine, which is sweet smelling, and grows up a rose bush which has reached 8’ tall. In early May, until the roses come out, the Akebia is the scent for our patio. Earlier, it was the lilacs planted about 10’ away. Later on, it will be the roses, and then other things throughout the summer. On the second patio, the atmosphere is more private, quiet, a place to read a book. I find thyme is wonderful there, and suggest planting it between the stepping stones or any walkway near this area. Thyme comes in many scents, and some lend themselves to this application very easily. Thyme spreads, but never invades, so it’s a great plant to have around. Try lemon thyme as well as lime thyme for a variety as well. Think about using a lavender plant near the front entrance of your home. Hidcote is the one

I chose for my entryway, and it flowers in late June usually into August. The flowers can be picked and used in small arrangements in your home, especially near a sleeping area, as lavender is known to aid some people in sleeping. It can also be woven into a wreath, whether large or small, and place almost anywhere. For years, I have been using Oriental lilies under windows around my home. I love them especially if the window is in a sitting area, and breezes bring in the sweet fragrance. Casa Blanca is one I love, and it is readily available locally and in catalogs. Another suggestion for a Orienpet lily would be Lilium hybrid ‘Silk Road’, which is a highly fragrant lily, with deep fuchsia center/throat and white on the edges of the petals. It grows to 6’ tall and works well just a bit further away from your window. Scented gardens are fun, and above all they are personal. Many people like different things. I love chocolate fragrance, but smelling it all day could make one crave chocolate, and that may not be a good thing, but a plant or two placed at just the right spot in the garden is a fun plant to have indeed. If you ‘Goggle’ in ‘chocolate flower’ you will find this flower which looks like a small yellow daisy. It grows well in our USDA Zone 5 gardens, and is a delight. Most of all have fun, and happy gardening.

Schools Wee People Preschool Graduation Wee People Preschool held its graduation for the four-year old class on Thursday evening, May 21. It was attended by nearly sixty proud parents, grandparents and friends. The evening began with Rev. Wanda Ray of Christ Church welcoming those assembled and stating how much she has enjoyed having the children in attendance. Teacher Beverly Frey brought in the students who performed songs and fingerplays. Each student was called up to receive their certificate and received compliment on their Star Quality.

A highlight of the evening was viewing a DVD made by Miss Betsy Kaip of her interviews with individuals. It was interesting to watch their reactions to questions and hear plans of their future careers. Each family received a copy of the DVD and a booklet made by their child. The children gathered around Rev. Wanda for a closing prayer blessing them and asking for protection during the summer. King and Romick Take It to the Mats to Benefit Autism Research and Aid Huron High School sophomores Matthew King and Jordan Romick used their wrestling skills to battle a different kind of opponent. On Sunday, May 17, 2009, King and Romick participated in the Second Annual “Wrestle Against Autism” tournament. The two varsity wrestling lettermen traveled to St. John’s Arena at The Ohio State University where they each wrestled to fourth place, in their respective weight classes, in this bracket style double elimination tournament. All proceeds raised during this tournament were donated to Autism research and aid. In order to raise public awareness, the tournament organizers issued a statement including the following facts about autism: 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism 1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum 67 children are diagnosed per day A new case is diagnosed almost every 20

minutes More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. Autism costs the nation over $35 Billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism There is no medical detection or cure for autism Matthew King would especially like to recognize his cousin, Kai Limburg, who, as a toddler, was diagnosed as high functioning autistic. Matthew wrestled this tournament for Kai. Both King and Romick hope that everyone in Huron will do whatever they can to help in this cause.

Child Passenger Safety BY BRUCE MILLER STATE FARM® AGENT

Although the number of crashrelated fatalities for children has steadily decreased since 1975, motor vehicle crashes remains one of the leading causes of death for children1. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that, on average, 6 children under the age of 15 years were killed and 673 were injured in crashes everyday in 20042. Sadly, most of these deaths could have been prevented. Half of all children under age 15 killed in crashes were completely unrestrained2. Although all 50 states currently have some form of child restraint laws, parents and drivers need to make sure children are appropriately restrained every car ride. Here are some tips to help keep kids safe in vehicles: ✓ All children 12 and under should ride in the back seat of the vehicle appropriately restrained3 ✓ Make sure children are appropriately restrained according to current best practices. NHTSA recommends the following guidelines4: • Infants: Birth until at least 20 pounds AND at least 1 year old

should ride rear-facing in an infant or convertible seat • Toddlers: Over at least 20 pounds AND over at least 1 year old; up to 40 pounds should ride forward-facing in a convertible or combination seat • Young children: Over 40 pounds; Up to at least age 8, unless 4’9” should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat with a lap and should seat belt • Older children: Over 8 years old or 4’9” should use a lap and shoulder seat belt ✓ All child safety seats should be used and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, as well as the vehicle owner’s manual instructions ✓ Never place a rear-facing infant seat in front of an airbag Be a good role model...always wear your seat belt. For adults, seat belts in combination with air bags provide the best protection against injury and death in crashes.
