Alumni Scholarship Dance a Success We were wrong. Winter definitely did NOT end on Saturday, February 28th. But despite the day’s snow squalls and freezing weather, a goodly contingent of Huron High Alumni and their friends turned out to support the annual Alumni Scholarship Dance and created enough heat in the process to fog up Mesenburg’s. A late showing by those who had attended the overtime basketball game helped swell the crowd and guarantee at least three scholarships from the dance. That’s three more of Huron finest receiving a little boost on their career starts at the spring scholarship awards gathering this May. The theme this year – Recession-Depression Beater – did much to encourage folks to dress down. Many attended costumed in the decade in which they had graduated and looked good doing so. A couple poodle skirts from the fifties were spotted, as well as old cheerleader skirts and jackets from the sixties and seventies, and athletic garb from the eighties and nineties. Definitely no Fonzie wannabes here, but a couple sported their leather jackets and chains. Hairstyles? That was another matter. Seems there was a shortage of the one essential ingredient, just like everything else during this recession, so no one hauled out the old butch wax and Brylcreme to attempt any doos. All in all it was good fun to break the winter doldrums. The Alumni Association thanks all who helped make this fundraiser possible. The committee members who put the dance together were fabulous. The FM Band who provided the music played all the old favorites and left no one with a week’s worth of headache – a sure sign of an ageing crowd. Those who helped sponsor the raffle and door prizes left many people happy they came out for the evening – the Anytime Fitness Gym, Bruce Miller’s State Farm Insurance, Huron Chamber of Commerce, the Vermillion Country Club, the Donut Shop, Dominos Pizza, and the Pizza House. Finally, we thank the Mesenburg’s and their crew who kept the food

Let’s wait to see how the economy goes next year. All enjoyed the music of The FM Band. From the fifties, a few had dug out their poodle skirts, lacy blouses and ribbons for their hair. Some sported saddle shoes, and on their arms dragged along boyfriends dressed in pink shirts. One Greaser had promised to wear a T-shirt with his cigarette pack rolled up in the sleeve. Not! Amanda Vacca related, “If the prompt is one that really gives you an idea, you get an adrenaline rush that helps you to just go with it. The words seem to come to you easily and you know you’ve been able to write a good response. It’s pretty cool!” Along with the team success, St. Peter School also placed two writers in the top fifteen. Elaina Hemker and Hannah Digman were ranked in 7th and 8th place, respectively and received medals for their achievement. In addition, Hannah was awarded a journal for having her writing named “Best of Round” during the competition. Elaina enjoyed her personal achievement but commented on the team results. “When we were named second place winners, it was overwhelming. To know that our little school had done so well was a great feeling.” The next step in the competition is at the state level which is held in May at the College of Wooster. To move on to state competition, contestants must qualify in the top 20% of the writers who were at the regionals. Mrs. Virgo will be notified this week about who will be able to represent St. Peter School at that level...

BEWARE OF COUNTERFEIT MONEY

Recently there have been reports of the use of counterfeit money in our area. Advancements in copiers and computer technology used in counterfeiting have made it difficult to identify counterfeit money. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is responsible for printing paper money and the United States Mint is responsible for producing coins. There are several ways citizens can try to stay ahead of counterfeiters. One such way is learning the anti-counterfeiting measures incorporated in our currency. There are several websites that can teach citizens these measures. One such website is from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It is www.moneyfactory.gov/ newmoney/. This site informs citizens of the latest versions of our paper currency so that they can see what the new bills look like when they enter circulation. This website also identifies the security features used to thwart counterfeiting. Another website comes from the United States Secret Service. The Secret Service was actually created in 1865 to suppress counterfeit currency. The Secret Service has a section in the website called “Know your Money.” It can be found at www.secretservice.gov/know_your_money.shtml. If you go to this website, you’ll see a table of contents with

many options, including a link to a section devoted to identifying real and counterfeit currency. This site also gives guidance on what citizens should do if they encounter counterfeit money. Included is a “Know Your Money Poster” that identifies the security procedures in our currency. This poster can be printed. It especially may be useful for businesses in training employees. In addition to visual inspection of currency, there are devices on the market that can be used to help identify counterfeit money. A simple device is a counterfeit money detector pen. If a pen mark on a bill turns yellow, the bill is good; if it turns black or brown, the bill is fake. There are also more advanced devices that can be purchased. Anyone who is caught manufacturing or using counterfeit money can face federal and state criminal charges. With a vigilant citizenry, counterfeiting can be stopped. Articles appearing in this column are intended to provide broad, general information about the law. Before applying this information to a specific legal problem, readers are urged to seek advice from an attorney.

Firelands Audubon Book Collection at Huron Library BY BRAD PHILLIPS

Combining dignity & affordability. We offer our most popular caskets together with our uncompromised service. That means we can create the memorial you had in mind, for much less than you would have expected -just one of the many ways you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Think Spring What’s the big deal anyway with all the whining about the snow and cold? After living in northern Michigan, this weather is just another day in April to me. But of course spring in Ohio is just around the corner. In sixty days it will be mid April. Some will have already starting planting gardens if the weather is typical. Peas for instance. kole crops. Spring is a time for renewal. We renew our new year’s resolution to lose weight by starting a walking program. The fresh spring air, wildflowers, green buds overtaking the dull brown landscape. Birds flying through or flying in to take up summer residence. Their songs filling the air. In 2008 walking in nature is again the number one outdoor activity in America. Walking is a way to improve physical and mental health. We are fortunate in Erie County, in our north coast region and in our state and nation to see so many new hiking opportunities, thanks to the continued construction of new trails. Make it a point now to schedule into your spring (and summer and fall) calendar, time for hiking in nature. Embark on a spring renewal of mental and physical health. Enjoy the great green outdoors. Baskets by seniors Scheid and Lehrer helped the period, and it ended with the Flyers up by just one point, 43 – 42. The fourth period opened with Clyde going on a small 8 – 2 run to take a 51 – 44 lead with 4:08 left. Huron called time out to regroup and then scored four points to one free throw by the Flyers (Huron 48, Clyde 52). The visitors called time out with 2:49 left. Huron takes the ball and shows great patience on offense. Scheid is fouled with 1:56 left and hits both free throws to bring Huron within two points (52-50). With 1:18 left, Huron fouls Clyde guard Alex Gillette after he forces a turnover. He hits one of the free throws to give his team a 53-50 lead. The Tigers go down and miss a FG with one minute left and again must foul Gillette. He gives his team a 54 -50 lead at the :52 mark. Junior Zach Grieves gave the Tigers renewed life by taking his man, one on one, to the hole for two points with just 23 seconds left (52-54). The Flyers called time to get organized and the Tigers came out of the break in a man to man press. Clyde seems prepared for this and sends a man deep. Huron intentionally fouls him to avoid an easy basket. The Flyers can only muster one point (55-52) and on their ensuing inbounds play, an alert Matt Lehrer ties up the ball, giving the Tigers possession with :19 left. Huron goes full court and sets up a three pointer for Grieves, who misses. Eric Volz makes a diving save of the ball and tosses it out to Collin Scheid who musters one last shot. Clyde gets the rebound off the miss, is fouled, and this time Gillette hits both free throws. The Flyers win by the final score of 57 – 54. St. Paul Flyers Soar Past Tigers, 65 – 52 The Huron Tiger Men completed their final regular season game by traveling to Norwalk to take on the Norwalk St. Paul Flyers of the Firelands Conference. The night opened with the JV game in which the Flyers fought off the young Tigers, 45 – 51. Huron was paced by 10 points each from Joe Ramey, Jake Hillman, and Jon Hicks. The varsity game started out fast for both teams. The Tiger’s offense looked smooth and disciplined. Volz, Poorman, and Scheid led Huron to a 20 – 17 lead. There were only three fouls during that opening quarter. Both teams were playing man to man defense. The second period saw the teams settle into these defenses that would cut the scoring in half. During the last two minutes of the first half, St. Paul’s offense went cold and Huron committed four turnovers. The score at halftime was the Tigers 32, Flyers 30. As smooth as Huron looked running Brandon Poorman leads the Tigers their offense during with 16 points against St. Paul . the first period, it was hard to believe it was the same team during the second half. The Tigers were held to just six points during the entire third

quarter while Norwalk scored 15 points to take a 45 – 38 lead. The fourth period opened with the Flyers going on a 16 – 5 run to take final control of the game. At the 2:44 mark, St. Paul was up 61 – 43. Huron would go on a late run while Norwalk tried to stall, but the end was never in doubt. Brandon Poorman led the Tigers with 16 points.

Collin Scheid drives to the bucket on his way to scoring nine points for the Tigers.

Huron Track & Field Cookie Sales The Huron Track & Field teams have begun their annual cookie sales running from March 3 through March 17. This is the third year the teams have offered the ready-to-bake cookie dough. Packaged 48 cookies to a box, you may choose between Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter, M & M Candies, White Chunk Macadamia Nut, and the always popular Snickerdoodles. The mouthwatering cookies cost $15 a box with 40% of the profit going to the track program. Best of all the cookies last at least one year frozen. The money earned is used to help defray the expense of high cost items such as pole vault poles, shot puts, discuses, track

camps, as well as to help feed the athletes at meets. The athletes will earn awards, such as free T-shirts, a Kalahari water park pass, and banquet tickets, for selling a certain amount of boxes. The cookies will be coming in April 8 just before Easter and would make a great after dinner treat. Most of all the track coaches are sold on the quality, as many are, or they would not be offering the cookies again this year. If a Track & Field member does not contact you please call the High School at 419-433-1234, ext. 1215 and someone will take your order. This is one item that won’t just lie around and never be used. Ask anyone who’s ordered them before, you won’t be disappointed in the quality.

Bid winter “arreviderci” with Italian operatic selections, featuring rising stars soprano Elizabeth Zharoff and tenor Joseph Turro from the Oberlin Conservatory, who join the Firelands Symphony Orchestra for the spring concert at 8 p.m. March 21 at the Sandusky State Theatre. FSO’s music director, Carl Topilow – acclaimed by local audiences for his holiday concert spectacular – will conduct the program, which includes popular operatic arias and duets by Puccini, Verdi, and Donizetti. We will also be projecting English translations of the selections. Turro and Zharoff will put you in the mood for romance with haunting love songs from Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love.” Musetta’s sparkling waltz from “La Boheme” will get your toes tapping.

Italian composer Ottorino Respighi was so taken by the work of his paesano (fellow countryman), artist Alessandro Botticelli, that he wrote a piece of music depicting three famous paintings by this Italian master. You will be able to see these paintings on our screen while the orchestra is playing the splendid Botticelli Triptych. In addition, the orchestra will be playing music that it so beloved, that it has been heard many times over in different forms. Verdi’s Overture to La Forza del Destino was used in the magnificent French movies “Jean de Florette” and “Manon of the Spring”; Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda can be heard in Walt Disney’s Fantasia, and Alan Sherman’s hilarious song “Hello Mother, Hello Father”; and Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville was a favorite accompaniment to Bugs Bunny. Maestro Topilow will be using at Sawmill Creek Resort a very special “Italian clarinet” to Huron, Ohio play Ralph Herman’s Italian MedCasual Dinner Menu ley, a collection of well known Neapolitan songs, and Rota’s Theme 5:30 - 9:30pm from the Godfather will be heard All Entertainment in “an offering that you can’t refuse”!
