A Night With the Cavs BY MIKE THATCHER

My 10-year-old son and I were lucky enough to have front row seats at the Cav’s game on Tuesday Feb. 3, 2009. After the game, LeBron James walked over and handed my son his shoes that were worn during the game. Shane has a broken arm and his blue cast was very visible, and that is possibly why Lebron gave him the shoes. The shoes are size 16, by the way. After the game, the lady from the Cav’s took us upstairs in the offices to look around, and then to center court for a picture. I am a Sales Manager at Kalahari, and one of Lebron’s business associates stayed here last year and we spent a lot of time together. He repaid me by giving me his courtside seats for the game. Shane was a “hero” at school the next day, and many of the kids wanted to sit beside him, as the “gift of the shoes” was shown all night and the next day on ESPN’s sports Center TV show. I am lucky enough to have worked for the Cleveland Browns as a “Ball-Boy” for the last 10 years, and driving home from the Cav’s game Shane said, “Dad, you’re on TV all the time, now tonight I was on TV”. Sure made a Dad proud. Shane is in 5th grade at Woodlands. He likes to play soccer and played in Biddy basketball this year until he broke his arm while sledding. His sister Taylor is 16 and is in Varsity cheerleading. My wife Sherry and I and his sister are all proud of him. Shane holds the shoes of Cleveland Cavs Lebron James. They are size 16, pretty big Shane wants to get to another Cavs game soon.

Around Town Parkvue Health Care Announces Staff Change Mona DelValle, Marketing Director for The Community at Parkvue, has announced she is relocating to Phoenix, Arizona at the end of February. “This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make,” says Ms. DelValle. However, health issues in her family have forced the move to a warmer climate. Mona explains that the decision is most difficult because of her job. “This is the best place I have ever worked in my professional career,” she says. Parkvue Health Care Center is fortunate enough to fill the Marketing Director position with someone who has the same, if not more, passion for Parkvue. Tracy Clark will assume the marketing role effective February 20, 2009. Tracy has been with The Community at Parkvue for over 2 years but has worked for United Church Homes for almost 10 years in various capacities. “Tracy brings the same talent, ambition and enthusiasm to the job that Mona had,” said Ken Keller, Administrator for the Community at Parkvue. “We wish Mona the best of luck in her new endeavors and are confident that Tracy can continue the efforts that Mona has initiated,” added Mr. Keller. The Community at Parkvue is a not-for-profit facility accredited by JCAHO, owned by United Church Homes Inc., based in Marion, Ohio and is related to the United Church of Christ.

Sawmill Creek Resort and Conference Center, Huron, Ohio has set a course to reduce their carbon footprint. In addition to becoming a 100% smoke free environment, the Resort is Ohio’s first resort/hotel to initiate an organics recycling program! By working closely with Barnes Nursery, Inc. and the Barnes Regional Composting Facility, located less than two miles away in Huron, the kitchen and dining room staff have perfected a system of separating all food, paper, soiled cardboard and other compostable packaging waste for separate collection. The Resort offices have initiated an office paper recycling program as part of the organics plan. This organic waste is then taken to the composting site where it is composted into high-end soil amendments and mulch. Visitors to Sawmill Creek Resort can see the results of this recycling process as the compost and mulch is found in the landscape beds surrounding the Lodge. Tigers Ground Rockets, 53 – 44

Sophomore Brian Bollenbacher tries to get the Huron offense going during the second half of the victory over the Rockets.

The Huron Boys basketball team traveled to Oak Harbor looking for their third SBC win on Friday night. The Tigers came out playing a full court press, looking to force the action. What they certainly did was keep the Rockets from finding a scoring groove for three full periods. At the end of the first quarter, neither team scored in the double digits. Huron finished on top, 9 – 6. The Tiger defense remained stingy in the second period, only allowing Oak Harbor another seven points. Zach Grieves (four three pointers) and Collin Scheid (nine points) provided most of Huron’s 23 first half points. The third period was eerily similar to the first half where neither team could muster much offense. Huron was able to maintain its ten point lead, 33-23. It was during the final quarter where the teams showed some spark. Oak Harbor would almost match their night’s previous three periods in the final stanza, scoring 21 points. The Rockets would close to within four points with just 2:09 left in the game. With a minute and a half to go, Collin Scheid hit two free throws to give Huron a six point lead. On Oak Harbor’s next possession, Scott was fouled and hit the first of his two free throws. He missed the second shot, but the Rockets were able to tie up the rebound and force a jump ball. The possession arrow went Oak Harbor’s way. On the ensuing inbounds play, underneath the Rocket basket, there was a controversial turnover call that gave Huron the ball back and took the wind out of the Rockets’ comeback attempt. The remainder of the contest was a free throw exhibition put on by the Tigers. With 17 seconds left, Oak Harbor hit a three pointer, but it was too late. Huron won, 53-44. The Tiger’s Collin Scheid led Huron with 16 points while Zach Grieves chipped in with 14 of his own. Unfortunately, Huron’s JV boys fell to the Rockets in the evenings first match, 52-46. The Tigers were led by junior Matt Schoelwer’s 10 points and junior Jon Hicks’ 13 points.

Lady Tigers Win Second Straight On Parent’s Night On Tuesday night, the Huron girls’ basketball program celebrated Parents Night at Huron High School. The Tigers were fresh off a win over SBC rival Oak Harbor and looking forward to their first match up against Port Clinton. The evening began, as so many now seem to, with a victory in the JV game. Huron 41 Port Clinton 21. The Junior Tigers improved their record to 10 – 5 on the season. Alexis Lemar lead the way with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. She was aided by Devon Koenig’s 12 points and Ellie Justus’ 6 rebounds. Between games, the parents were recognized as they were escorted by their daughters across the gymnasium to meet the program’s coaching staff. The Varsity game’s scoring started fast out of the gate for both teams. Huron’s full court press created problems for the Redskins as the Tigers took a 10 – 7 lead at the 5:29 mark. At 4:49, Volz hit a three pointer to increase the Huron margin to13 – 7. The first period ended with Port Clinton trailing 16-14. During the second period, in what would be a reoccurring theme, Lauren Volz would hit two more three’s to give her nine points in the first half. However, Port Clinton would outscore the Tigers 17 – 11 overall, to go into halftime with the score 31 – 27 in PC’s favor. The third period saw both teams struggle to score until Lauren Volz found her touch again late in the stanza, hitting three straight three pointers. She single handedly took Huron from trailing 34 – 36 to a lead of 43 – 36 in just a couple minutes of play. Early in the fourth quarter, Port Clinton mounted a run and came within two points of the lead (44-42) with 7:08 left in the game, following two straight Huron turnovers. But Devon Grendow and Sarah Phinney rescued the Tigers, putting Huron back on top, 50 – 42 with 4:15 left to play. Points by Junior Mellisa Moberg, Ashley Stacey, and Sarah Phinney closed out the victory. Huron 57 Port Clinton 48. Statistically, Lauren Volz was the star of the night with 23 points (7 three’s) and 7 rebounds.

Sarah Phinney had her usual solid game of nine points and six rebounds. Ashley Stacey added 10 points, 7 boards, and 3 steals. The freshman point guard Caroline Estel hustled her way to 11 rebounds, 8 points, and 6 assists.
