‘Celebrate Huron’, Public Invited To Fun Evening Of Gaming, Great Food, Awards The Huron Chamber of Commerce is planning the 1st Annual “Celebrate Huron.” It will be a night of recognition, camaraderie and a Las Vegas-style casino, complete with slots. Mesenburg’s Plaza Place is the place to be on Saturday, March 10 as the Chamber brings back the city recognition nights that were a longstanding tradition in Huron’s history. Chamber members and local citizens, as well, will be honored for their efforts to keep our community “A GREAT LAKE PLACE.” Everyone in the area is invited to this gala evening. Tickets are only $25, if pre-purchased, and include a dinner featuring Randy Mesenburg’s award-winning carved beef brisket and a huge fruit tree with chocolate fountain. Those attending will also receive complimentary gaming chips that can be used for blackjack, poker and roulette. There will even be a

few slot machines. Winnings can be used in a drawing for some great prizes, including a sailboat charter and “A Fine Dining” basket with gift cards from many great area restaurants. A Members’ Showcase kicks off the event at 6 p.m. Plans are being finalized for many other games and entertainment throughout the evening. Proceeds from this “Celebrate Huron” will go to the Chamber’s Scholarship Fund, which has donated thousands of dollars to graduating Huron High School students down through the years. The tradition of honoring outstanding local citizens was a part of the local scene for many years, with residents joining Jaycees, Lions, Rotarians and Chamber members at the renowned Showboat Restaurant for an evening of recognizing a man and woman of the year and a young man and woman. The Chamber is

bringing this tradition full circle with the event at Mesenburg’s, the family that co-owned the Showboat with Jake and June Claus. Last year’s honorees included: Huron teacher Bill Scott cited for his contributions to the track and cross country HHS programs; Erie Community Federal Credit Union, Outstanding Business; a Good Guys Award to Dan Hoppe and the crew of the Huron Street Department for their work in placing Chamber business banners on city light poles each spring; Chamber volunteers Doug Studer and Marge Billman; and an unsung hero award presented to funeral director Wayne Foster. Tickets are available for $25 at the Chamber office, 509 Huron St., through March 7 and for $30 at the door. Phone 419-433-5700 for information.

Huron in 2012: Poised for the Future By Lisa Yako Huron is on the cusp of some exciting restructuring and revitalization projects. The year began with the implosion of the buildings at the ConAgra site and will continue with other capital improvements and the creation of plans for yet even more improvements. Huron is truly ripe for development. Our City Manager and City Council have directed Huron on a financially responsible and conservative course. The infrastructure of the city is strong, and residents are provided with superior services, especially our Police and Fire departments. Our Parks and Recreation Department provides us with a high quality of life, and our position on the shores of the Huron River and Lake Erie offer us an aestheticallypleasing environment. All of this is provided to you as a resident for mere pennies a day. So, what are we to expect from our city officials in 2012, and what does the future hold for a city with so much potential?

This summer we listened to your feedback and developed a strategic plan to meet your needs for library service over the coming years. According to City Manager, Andy White, Huron is unique in that we are dealing with the repercussions of the downtown being destroyed and the city being segmented by Urban Renewal. Huron’s leaders are faced with the arduous task of trying to put the pieces back together and recreate a downtown. In an effort to guide decisions for Huron’s future, the city developed a strategic plan which they entitled “City of Huron: Vision 2020”. The plan is available on the city’s website, www.cityofhuron.org. This year marks the second full year of implementation of the strategic plan. “The implosion ushered in a new year and ushered in another plan of action for the future.” stated Andy White. The next plan of action involves indentifying components of the city as a whole that need improvement. To move towards this goal, the city has hired the Clevelandbased architectural firm, City Architecture, to provide a detailed plan of where improvements should be made and where development is appropriate. Also, tactics for better utilizing our waterfront and making the city more pedestrian and bike friendly will be included in the architect’s plan. A steering committee, which is composed of approximately 25 Huron residents and business owners, is working with City Architecture to guide the plans. Before a course of action is adopted, Huron residents will have the opportunity to comment on the proposal. Plans for the future will

focus on five core areas of the city including development of Main Street, both north and south, and the ConAgra site. The city has already applied for a $2.5 million grant to fund the reconnection of Main Street. This would involve cutting the road through the current parking lots of both the Boat Basin and the River’s Edge Hotel. Businesses would be encouraged to locate along this corridor, and public access to the water would be improved. Other plans include improving access to the pier and creating hiking trails through the spoil pile area. In 2012, residents will see the re-decking of the Cleveland Road Bridge across the Huron River. This project, which will begin sometime this summer, will be funded and completed by the State of Ohio. Further, the demolition at the ConAgra site will be completed by the end of April. The overall project was under budget, so the City hopes to get approval to use the remaining grant money to stabilize the shoreline along the perimeter of the ConAgra parcel and then create a walkway around the perimeter. Once this is complete, the city will work to entice developers to invest in the ConAgra site. The next few years will truly define Huron’s course well into the future. It will be interesting to see how all of the plans unfold.

Take a Second Look at your Taxes From Dee Hartley, Senior Tax Advisor at H & R Block A quote from H & R Block’s Second Look advertising campaign: “I’ve always done my own taxes. It’s not too hard, so I thought,” Detroiter Russell Gismonde said. “Every penny I can get would really help; the plan is to have my own business someday.” We hear this all of the time “I’ve always done my own return, there’s nothing to it.” Being in the business, we know how fast tax laws change and life style changes. The years of doing the same tax return year after year are long gone. Unfortunately, not all tax returns are prepared accurately and some mistakes can lead to overpayment. H&R Block’s Second Look provides a professional review of the original tax return and advice on what to do if variances are found. Reviewing your 2008 – 2011 returns at this time could prove profitable to you. This review is free at this time. The Second Look review process in Detroit revealed many common tax mistakes, including: Missed education credits: The American Opportunity Credit was extended through 2012, allowing taxpayers

to claim $2,500 for the first four years of college education for each student. The Tuition and Fees Deduction provides a reduction in taxable income of up to $4,000, and the Lifetime Learning Credit is worth up to $2,000 per return for post-secondary degree programs. These education benefits cannot be combined (for the same student) so taxpayers should work with a tax professional to choose the one that is most beneficial. Inaccurate filing status: It is very important to accurately assess your filing status as it impacts the value of some credits and deductions available. For example, a family in Detroit received an additional $5,498 from their Second Look review by changing their filing status to married filing jointly versus the often less beneficial married filing separate status). Overlooked Earned Income Tax Credit: Eligible low-income earners did not claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is worth up to $5,751 for tax year 2011. Bottom line this week – if in the last four years, you have had in your household a college student, a change in employment status, change in the members of your household, this is a very good time to have those returns reviewed by a tax professional.

Dr. Gudena Earns Board Certification in Hematology

Dr. Surfield will present on Facial Rejuvenation, including injectible fillers, laser resurfacing, and various face lifts. (6 pm)

Vinay K. Gudena, MD, MPH, of University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Firelands Regional Medical Center, has successfully earned his Board Certification in Hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Dr. Gudena is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hematology and practices exclusively for UH Seidman Cancer Center at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Including his fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Gudena has been practicing hematology and medical oncology since 2006. ABIM works to enhance the quality of healthcare by certifying internists and subspecialists who demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for excellent patient care. A growing body of research suggests that Board Certified physicians deliver higher quality care than non-certified physicians. Board Certification demonstrates to the public that physicians have met the highest standards of internal medicine and its subspecialties. Board Certification is voluntary and includes an exam that tests a physician’s ability to diagnose and treat patients with a broad range of conditions. University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Firelands Regional Medical Center artfully merges the most advanced approaches to the treatment of cancer with a beautiful healing environment. Looking at cancer and its treatment through the eyes of the patient, the center’s location, being internally connected to the main hospital, is an added benefit to their cancer care. Our Oncologists treat all cancers and blood disorders.

Woodlands Student To Be Published in National Magazine A 6th grade Gifted Language Arts student, Gretchen Blackwell, learned recently her poem; “The Rope Swing” will be published in an upcoming issue of the national magazine, Creative Kids. “This is the fourth consecutive year Woodlands Intermediate School has had a student’s work accepted into this national contest,” explained Mr. Dale Casper, Gifted Intervention Specialist. It is quite an accomplishment, he explained. Earlier in the school year the students of Mr. Casper’s 6th Grade Gifted Language Arts Class had completed a section on poetry in their Creative Writing unit. The students were required to write approximately eighty poems creating a book out of their best twelve works of art. Upon completion of this assignment six students from the class selected what they thought was their “best” work for submission to a contest in Cre-

ative Kids magazine. Blackwell received a letter in the mail confirming her future publica-

tion in the magazine. Her winning poem, “The Rope Swing” was written this past fall as part of the classroom assignments. The idea of “The Rope Swing” was trigger from her enjoyment of swinging. The swing she describes in her poem is an imaginary one in a barn. When Blackwell is not in class writing poetry, this time of year she can be found on the basketball courts, as she plays for the 6th grade girls’ basketball team. She also enjoys playing the bells in the school band, drawing in her free time and playing tennis. The Creative Kids magazine is geared toward gifted students between the ages of 8 and 16. The competition is tough as students are competing on a national level. Materials for submission include cartoons, songs, short essays, puzzles, photographs, artwork, games, editorials, poetry, and plays.

On Tuesday, February 21, students at St. Peter School celebrated Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, the last hurrah before the Catholic season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. For a small donation, students were allowed to wear mismatched clothes and attend a carnival. The carnival was planned and put on by the junior high students and teacher, Mrs. Asher. There were plenty of games to be played and prizes won.

School Open House for New Families St. Peter School will be hosting an Open House on Sunday, March 4, from 11:30-1:00 for any new family that is interested in enrolling at St. Peter School. The teachers will be in their classrooms to answer any questions that you may have as well as help you to tour the building. Please call the school at 419 433-4640 if you have any questions regarding the New Family Open House.

Endorsements: “…it is without hesitation that I strongly support and recommend Captain Paul Sigsworth to serve as the next Sheriff of Erie County…I can think of no one who is more qualified and able to carry out the important duties and responsibilities of Sheriff than Captain Sigsworth…He has the utmost respect of his peers both in Erie County and the surrounding areas…He has earned that reputation by the knowledge, diligence, and passion he has, not only for the Sheriff’s Office but also for his profession…He has always led by example and has exhibited uncompromising integrity, honesty, and ethics in every situation he has faced during his career…He is dedicated to his family and has been involved and active in the community.” - Erie County Sheriff Terry M. Lyons “It is my pleasure to endorse and discuss the character of Paul Sigsworth. I have known Paul for approximately 25 years and during that time we have interacted both professionally and personally. Paul is a man of character and would be an ideal sheriff. Paul has many strong character values, especially honesty. I have discussed numerous issues with Paul and in each instance he always wants to do what is right. He is a hardworking, dedicated individual who is a problem solver. Paul is proactive, with good common sense, always thinking ahead trying to make sure there are no problems. I could always depend on Paul for assistance and guidance. Paul loves his job…whether you call him at two o’clock in the afternoon or two o’clock in the morning, Paul is always there for you. “Paul is a leader in the Erie County law enforcement community…(Paul) has an excellent working relationship with each jurisdiction, the courts, civic & social organizations and business owners. In a time when most politicians are viewed as dishonest and not dependable, Paul is the exact opposite. I strongly recommend Paul for Sheriff of Erie County.” - Chief Randy Glovinsky (retired), Huron Police Department Labor organizations UAW Tri-County CAP Council Sandusky Firefighters Union , Local #327, IAFF.
