Thirty-seven boats and more than 200 participants entered last weekend’s annual 41-82 walleye fishing tournament based out of the Crow's Nest. It was the fifth year and more than $4,100 was raised for Brianna Loveland (granddaughter of Joe and Winnie Ihnat at Anchors Away) who has leukemia. Each year the group chooses a charity. Pooh Bear Fishing Charters based out of Marblehead always takes his all girl team! ——— We had 0 entries in our Find Wylie contest last week. That’s because with all of our transition activities, we just forgot. So, no “Find Wylie” winner this week. Our “Win it on the Web” Contest winner is Shirley Duffy of Catawba chosen from 35 entries. Shirley wins a $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. Wylie will try to hide again this week and when you find him, fill out the Find Wylie Ad on page 10A and drop it at our office in the Beacon Place Shopping Center, next to Goodwill. Or, you can click on the Find Wylie icon on our We site, www.thebeacon.net. Also, click on the “Win it on the Web” icon to register for a free gas card. ——— There will be a very special art exhibit at the Lake Erie Shores and Islands Visitor’s Center from 5 to 8 p.m. today. Artist Jim Siemer will display his watercolor artistry celebrating the beauty and splendor of the Lake Erie Shores and Islands. There will also be music and entertainment that evening. Jim Siemer is a featured artist at Split Winds Gallery in downtown Port Clinton. ——— The Oak Harbor Conservation Club will hold a Youth Fishing Derby at the facility at 975 S. Gordon Road, just south of Oak Harbor. It is free and open to the public for kids 3-12. All youngsters should be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own poles; bait will be provided. Each child will receive a coupon for one hot dog and a beverage. Sign-in will be at 11 a.m., fishing starts at noon. For information, call Scott Kieffer at 419-355-1900. ——— The Ottawa County Fair opens its 10-day run at the fairgrounds on Ohio 163 between Port Clinton and Oak Harbor on Sunday. It is such a great slice of Americana, with all of the animals, youth groups, 4-H projects and real down-home entertainment. Make it a point to get there this year. Among the activities, the Red Cross Bloodmobile will be making a visit there on Friday, July 24 at the Fair Board Conference Room. ——— The Oak Harbor High School Athletic Department will be hosting its Fall OHSAA Pre-Season Meeting at 7 p.m. Friday, July 30, at the high school. This is a mandatory meeting for parents and student athletes participating in fall sports for grades seven through 12. ——— Classic Trendz will entertain the crowd at the Log Cabin Concert in Oak Harbor at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 19. While you're there, get a bag of popcorn and enjoy a root beer float! ——— Caitlyn Mortus, who we have told about earlier, had her last chemotherapy treatment on Tuesday and is doing very well, according to grandpa Bob Mortus. Caitlyn is the daughter of Jerry and Dawn Mortus, who now live in Katy, Texas.

Marine fires first shot BY ANGIE ADAIR Before the first shot was fired, past participants of the National Rifle Matches were honored with the dedication of the Shooters Memorial Plaza at Camp Perry. Thomas Brown, past president of the Friends of Camp Perry and former Port Clinton mayor, spoke during the ceremony. “This memorial plaza is dedicated to the shooters who have participated in the Camp Perry Civilian Marksmanship Program for over 100 years. We say thank you for making this memorial possible,” he said. The tribute, set in front of three flagpoles and featuring the Oliver Hazard Perry Monument, is surrounded by more than 14,000 brick pavers engraved with names of veterans, shooters and friends of Camp Perry, the Civilian Marksmanship Program and

Fish Ohio! BY ANGIE ADAIR

Ohio’s first lady pulled in five fish Monday during the 31st annual Governor’s Fish Ohio Day. While Gov. Ted Strickland was in budget meetings in Columbus, his wife Frances with Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, U.S. Sen. George Voinovich and others reeled in keepers totaling 472 pounds. The elected and state wildlife officials and members of the press headed out with local charter captains to enjoy the area’s biggest resource. “We have an asset in Ohio other states wish they had,” said Fisher, who also said this event is his favorite of the year. “That water is the future of Ohio,” said Voinovich, who has been fighting what he calls “the second battle of Lake Erie” throughout his career. National Rifle Association. After a wreath was placed at the foot of the monument, the focus shifted upward to a Black Hawk helicopter that dropped three members of the Ohio National Guard 19th Special Forces unit — one of whom delivered the flag set to fly over the matches this year. That flag — which came from the Port Clinton VFW — has made its way around the county, flying over Bataan Memorial Elementary, Port Clinton High School football field, Veterans Park during Veterans Day services and at the veterans’ services office. This year’s first shot was fired by a Marine for the first time in the event’s 102-year history. Brig. Gen. Melvin Spiese, commanding general of the U.S. Marine Corps Training and Education Command, took the podium before picking up his rifle. “There is nothing more perfect for a Marine to do than show up at a place

Local charter captains lend a hand The following area charter captains helped out for the annual Fish Ohio event: Jerry Abele, Ray Leach, Rick Dunlap, Joe Karakul, Mike Matta, Charlie and Wendy Crum, Steve Davis, Peggy Van Vleet, Ron Eichholt, Jeff Bricker, Kendal Parsley, John Tucholski, Dan Holan, Dan Welsh, Gary Mol and organizers for the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association — Pete Scheid and Mike Matta. ecutive director of the Ottawa County Visitors Bureau, caught a 28-inch, 7-pound fish, to help bring that boat’s total to 72 pounds. Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester caught six fish. But it’s not about the totals for everyone. “It’s the memories that are created out here,” said Sean Logan, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. And according to Chief of the Division of Wildlife Dave Graham, Ohioans agree. “We’ve seen a resurgence in families fishing,” he said. “We’ve seen the biggest upswing in fishing licenses in my career.”

Ohio's first lady Frances Strickland poses with her walleye Monday during the Governor's Fish Ohio Day on Lake Erie. Each participant left the luncheon at the Lake Erie Islands Regional Welcome Center that followed the fishing outing with a bag of fish. And the “first angler and first lady,” as Logan dubbed her, promised to go home with pride. After not catching any fish last year, the governor will definitely hear about his wife’s successful catch. “I got my walleye,” she said. “I can tell Ted all about it with the biggest grin.”

BREAKFAST BUFFET

Catawba West Harbor Yacht Club July 19th 8:00am - Noon

Dear Editor, Join together at the Dian Schnitzler Memorial Celebration Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. at Dian and Danny’s home. Celebrate the life of a great person. Reconnect with old friends. Make new friends. Share ideas. Exchange e-mail addresses. (It’s like the Internet, only in person.) Expand your mind (and your tummy) with hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Expand your neighbors’ minds by sharing remembrances and anecdotes. Mingle, nosh, remember, appreciate and celebrate! RSVP to 647 N. Park Lane, Marblehead, OH 43440 or eliernst@sbcglobal.net. Elizabeth Ernst Dear Editor, On Friday, Congress took a historic step toward a clean energy economy by passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454). While the dramatic shift we need in our energy policy and the dire scientific predictions regarding global warming demand that we do much more, the first step is always the hardest, and Congress should be applauded for taking it. I want to especially thank Representatives Marcy Kaptur and Betty Sutton for voting to pass the landmark legislation. The bill will bolster over 440 businesses in Ohio that are already involved in the green energy industry. Ottawa County and its neighboring counties stand to greatly benefit from the increased wind energy production created by this bill. Northwestern Ohio, especially counties on the shore of Lake Erie, has the highest wind speeds in the state, which will draw clean energy businesses and new jobs. The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate. We urge Senators Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich to strengthen and pass the bill to deliver on the promise that clean energy holds to recharge our economy, put millions of Americans back to work, and protect future generations from global warming. Amanda Moore Environment Ohio Dear Editor, I would like to thank the following agencies for their support and participation in the Operation Safe Boating Campaigns which was held this past Saturday. Officers of the Port Clinton Harbor Patrol Unit, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, U.S. Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ottawa County Sheriff ’s Office Marine Unit, Ohio Department of Public Safety-Division of Homeland Security, Ohio Division of Watercraft, Port Clinton Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 79, Port Clinton Fire Department,

Port Clinton City Council, Ottawa County Transportation Agency and also Community Market and Kroger Store. Despite the intense storm we had come through the Port Clinton area in the morning hours, officers were still able to conduct our operations. There were 22 vessels that were stopped, boarded and inspected. I would like to thank Mike Snider, Port Clinton city councilman, who is always assisting us with these operations. Mike not only kept us updated on the approaching weather, but also served as our chef during our lunch break; Community Market and Kroger for their donating of the bratwursts and buns for lunch; Port Clinton FOP Lodge for the pop; and also the Ottawa County Transportation Agency for the use of its large van which came in very handy as a mini office and also kept officers out of the weather we had encountered during the operations. Thanks to Olen Martin, NBI Coordinator of the Ohio Homeland Security for his support as well not only during these operations, but for the support he and his agency has given to all the Law Enforcement Agencies here in Ottawa County, as well as other agencies throughout the State of Ohio, as part of the Northern Border Initiative Program. Also, thanks to other enforcement agencies who had attended the last operation, which was held Saturday, June 20. Along with the other agencies listed, they were the U.S. Border Patrol, Perrysburg Township Police Department. Our last operation of the boating season will be on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ellis A. Fuiava, Patrolman, Marine Patrol Coordinator, Port Clinton Harbor Patrol Unit Officer in Charge

Beacon Bits By the time you read this, the National Rifle Matches will be off to a good start following the First Shot ceremony Monday. It was expected that the speaker would be Brigadier Gen. Melvin Spies, U.S. Marine Corps. Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland also planned to be on hand. The rifle and pistol matches are a long-time tradition in our area. They last from through Wednesday, Aug. 19. It’s interesting to watch the matches. Drive there some day, take a lawn chair; be prepared to sit and observe the action. I find it very different from most things I’ve seen. But, then, let’s face it, I’ll watch most anything. You will enjoy it, I know. ——— And don’t forget the time is fast approaching for the Ottawa County Fair. That takes place July 20 -26. There’s something at the fair for everybody. And this year there is something very new. Thursday, July 23 will be “Money Dayâ€? at the fair. Local banks and community organizations will share information about money from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Entertainment tent. Door prizes, free popcorn, a coin scramble for kids at 2 and 5 p.m. and free informational programs at 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m. are slated. Topics sound good: “Making your Mortgage Work for You,â€? “How to Save when You Don’t Have a Dollar to Spare,â€? and “Credit versus Debt.â€? ——— “Inventors and Innovationsâ€? is the theme for this year’s Ohio Chautauqua. It is sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council and it’s always a good experience. The “charactersâ€? this year are Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone; Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of, well, practically everything; Mary McLeod Bethune, educator; Andrew Carnegie, industrialist who made masses of money and gave lots of it away, too; and George Washington Carver, inventor extraordinaire. These characters will be impersonated by good actors and it’s quite a learning experience as well as good entertainment to see them. The traveling show isn’t coming very close to our area of Ohio this year. But, it will be at Euclid July 15-19 and at Centerville July 21-25. It’s worth a drive to see these performances. The last time I saw one there was no charge for attending. They are given in a huge tent and it is just a walk in, walk out experience. It’s great. ——— The “Our Ohioâ€? magazine had a couple of really interesting articles in its July-August issue. A business that is close to home — the Hirzel Canning Co and Farms — is featured. The company owns three processing plants in Ohio and produces the Dei Fratelli brand of products. I know (from personal experience) that these products are very good. The Hirzel Company began back in 1923 when current owner Steve Hirzel’s greatgrandfather started growing cabbages to make sauerkraut. Soon the company expanded its scope and grew tomatoes and processed them. Soil in northwest Ohio proved excellent for growing tomatoes and the company was off to a successful start. According to the magazine article, written by Seth Teter (with photographs by Jodi Miller), two years ago the state of Ohio ranked third nationally with nearly 6,000 acres of tomatoes grown for processing. And the state ranked sixth in acreage of tomatoes grown to be used fresh. And speaking of tomatoes – have you seen the tomato plants that are grown hanging upside-down? I think it would be fun to try that. And Ted Peterson picked the first red ripe tomato in his garden on July 10. Can anyone beat that? I can’t. The tomatoes in my garden are still VERY green. The other interesting article in “Our Ohioâ€? was about the abundance of plants grown in an Ohio greenhouse in Richland County. Justin and Lynn Marotta run the Possum Run Greenhouse there. They grow 300 varieties of fuscias, making them the largest commercial suppliers of that flower in the world. My son gave me a wonderful hanging potted fuscia for Mother’s Day. I wonder if it came from Possum Run?

Coffin’s Corner BY KAREN COFFIN

The good old days Ah, we have fond memories of our youth, don’t we? Summer was for vacations, swimming, boating, baseball, fishing, playing and picnics. Kids spent every possible moment outside in their own yards or on a nearby vacant field. They rode bikes, played tag games and came inside only to eat or sleep. Rainy days could be boring, but there were puppet shows to plan or library books to read. Those are nostalgic times for many. Summers were indeed the “good old days. Why do they evoke such warm memories? It was a carefree time for youth and they could play for fun with friends. They learned to love the game, whatever it was. They experienced the truths that you can’t always win and that there’s another game tomorrow. It’s also more fun if you have two even teams rather than one dominant and one weak. If you are a poor sport, no one wants to play with you. If there was a disagreement about who was safe or out, the kids argued and usually made the right decision. One team generally won, but nobody kept personal stats. Sometimes, they didn’t bother to keep score. Everyone knew who the best players were, but they weren’t always the ones in leadership roles. New kids were welcomed, but they had to prove themselves and pay their dues before being one of the gang. “Gang wasn’t a bad term in those days. An adult might wander by and check to see everyone was OK as they noted who was present. Occasionally a parent would come by and play for a short time and that was great. It wasn’t so great if they stayed a long time or tried to start coaching if he/she wasn’t asked to. It was the kids’ game. Those days are probably gone forever. You now find kids playing only organized sports; supervised, run and coached by adults. We are afraid to leave our children unsupervised. Many kids come from “latch key homes where no parent is present after school or during the summer, so the kids must stay inside or be in a supervised activity. Neighborhoods don’t feel safe anymore. There is good news, however. There is much to like in today’s culture. The coaching can be excellent if the coach knows he or she is working to teach positive lessons to the players. If they know winning is not the only goal and if they have a child-centered philosophy about coaching, they can erase the fear of losing. That is a great gift to give one’s players. The kids have wonderful opportunities: to belong to a team, wear a uniform, learn about a sport from a knowledgeable person and develop into an accomplished player. Travel teams can provide terrific experiences as families travel together and meet some fine new people. The danger in today’s regimen is that it can become adult-centered, winning will be overemphasized, the athlete’s life (and that of their family) becomes totally centered around sports and the fun is gone. You would be amazed at the number of good athletes who quit before they are 13. They’ve had enough and the parents can be devastated. Provide your child with the opportunity to play a sport. Don’t insist. Expose them to more than one activity during their youth. Summer is a time for exploration and enrichment. An entire summer of practices, games and travel can unravel a kid especially if they play in more than one league. Search for balance in your schedules. Build in some days when there is nothing planned. Parents and coaches need downtime too. It’s really not summer vacation any more. It’s become very busy. The ump says, “play ball! not “work ball. Keep it fun. Remember that children are not short adults. Defend childhood. Will today’s kids think of this summer as their “good old days? Let’s make it happen. Karen Coffin, retired coach, is a member of the P.C.H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. She speaks to coaches and parents about “Kids and Sports and facilitates Coaching Education classes for the state of Ohio. Send questions, comments or suggested topics to coachcoffin @cros.net.

Firelands Presbyterian Preschool has been awarded a One Star Step Up To Quality Award from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services — Bureau of Child Care and Development in recognition of it’s preschool program and ongoing commitment to children. It is the only preschool-childcare facility in Ottawa County to receive the award. Step Up To Quality is a voluntary rating system for early care and education programs. “Firelands Preschool is proud to be a One Star program. We know that learning begins the moment babies open their eyes; and because of that we are committed to teaching the essentials of learning and the essentials of life,” said Karen Crownover, director of Firelands Preschool. One Star SUTQ Programs meet the following criteria: • A ratio of one teacher for every five infants (birth to 12 months), one teacher for every six infants (12 to 18 months, one teacher for every seven toddlers (30 to 36 months), one teacher for every 18 school aged children. • Teachers receive five hours of child development training per year, above licensing requirements. • To reduce staff turnover, the programs provide at least one employee benefit to staff members. • Teachers are familiar with Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards and are trained to prepare children for kindergarten. “Firelands provides a higher standard of care that exceeds Ohio’s licensing standards — which translates to more teachers, a greater commitment to in-service training and more nurturing environment for children to grow and develop,” said Terrie Hare, chief of the Ohio Bureau of Child Care and Development. One customer at Bassett’s Do It Best Hardware can check off some items from his home improvement to-do list after winning a $1,000 merchandise giveaway. March 2 through May 31, Bassett’s Do It Best Hardware accepted entries for a $ 1,000 shopping giveaway. The winner, selected at random, was Craig Nosker, of Middleburg Heights. Mike Bassett says that the giveaway created plenty of excitement among Bassett’s Do It Best customers. “One of the best things about the drawing is that our customers have an opportunity to dream a little bit, to think about what items they’d use in their home improvement or garden project. And for one of our customers, this became a reality, Bassett said. Bassett’s Do It Best Hardware is located at 3994 E. Harbor Road, Port Clinton, and has been serving customers in the Port Clinton area for more than nine years. Bassett’s Do It Best offers a complete line of hardware, plumbing, paint, grills, propane supplies for everyone from the do-ityourself homeowner to the professional.
