Is the Third Time the Charm? Port Clinton Schools May Seek Building Levy in November Since January 25 of this year, twenty-five members of the community and school officials have been meeting to discuss long term recommendations for the Port Clinton City School District’s facilities. On Tuesday, June 9, 2009 they presented their recommendation to the Port Clinton Board of Education. The planning team was composed of parents, community members and staff who met on several occasions, toured district buildings and visited other school districts to explore multiple options. Originally, there were eleven different plans developed and considered by the planning team. Costs, sites, green space, educational viability, utilities and long term (50-75 year) needs drove the discussion. Ultimately five plans were taken to the community for their input. Approximately 130 people attended the first meeting on April 28 and voted to send three plans back to the committee for further study. All three plans involved a new middle school as 79% of the community meeting attendees, after looking at the cost and educational appropriateness, decided that a renovation to the middle school was not cost effective or appropriate for the long term. A second community meeting, held on May 11, focused on sites, costs and educational function. Over 100 residents were in attendance. After evaluating the feedback from the meetings, the planning committee recommended to the Board of Education the following option for their consideration: Continued on page 2A

Port Clinton to Get $1.5 Million for Sewer Separation BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

Safety Town is for Kids BY JOHN SCHAFFNER

We all want our kids to be safe. There are many dangers out there lurking, especially for five year olds. Some can be helped. Some can’t. On June 16, 17 and 18, Port Clinton Police, North Central EMS, the Port Clinton Fire Department, Magruder Hospital and the Port Clinton Kiwanis Club are joining forces to instruct youngsters how to be safe in a number of dangerous situations. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Port Clinton Fire Department on E. State Road. “We will be teaching the new K-kids about stranger danger, crossing the street safely, wearing safety gear while riding a bike, seat belt and car safety, as well as fire safety and prevention,” says Kassie Anderson, supervisor of North Central EMS who is also a fire fighter and Kiwanian. There will also be instruction on home safety, including a 911 simulator. The youngsters will also get to see close up all of the local emergency vehicles in use. “We will break these down into days,” says Anderson. “Day one is Police Day (crossing Real Estate ..................1-8B the street, strangers and seat belts), day two is Fire Day (smoke house and stop, drop and Business .........................2B roll), day three is EMS day (home safety) and Financial Focus ..............3B graduation.” Sports .............................4B Safety Town is for youngsters entering kinClassifieds ...................5-6B dergarten who live within the Port Clinton City School District. Port Clinton Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester has been riding a roller coaster in pursuit of Federal and State stimulus dollars to separate the sewers on East Third Street. Several weeks ago, the Ohio EPA informed her that Port Clinton’s request was not high on their list. However, late Tuesday the Mayor got better news. After countless phone calls and e-mails, not to mention pictures of the area following last month’s 5” downpour, she has been informed that the city will receive a $1,577,250 grant separate the sewers in that area. “I am ecstatic,” said the Mayor on Tuesday afternoon, barely able to catch her breath. That news was coming on the heels of a $20,000 grant from the Harry Stensen Fund that will allow the City to complete the new restroom/ shower facility at Lakeview Park. The Mayor went to Columbus several weeks ago seeking the funding, and testified before the legislature. She did a whirlwind tour with Mark Wagoner and met with just about everybody in the decision-making chain. When informed that the project was not highly rated, the rains came, and so did opportunity. She sent Safety Service Director Rob Berner out to take a few photos, and flooded Columbus with pictures of the affected area. That did the trick! The project involves a new storm sewer installed covering five blocks of East Third Street emanating from the corner of Lincoln. It is the first blow at an 11-phase project covering a 25 block area of the city designed to alleviate basement flooding for the residents there. By separating the storm and sanitary sewers, overflow will be dramatically curtailed thus improving the quality of the water making its way into the Portage River. Finally, the project will make the 13 acre Waterworks project site “shovel ready for development. We are confident that this project will produce both long and short term employment opportunities as we move forward with the improvement of both our water quality and development of the waterfront,” stated Tester when in Columbus.

SoundOff Dear Editor, When I think of the people who were influential in my life, I rank Earl Warnke right at the top. Those of us who were his students knew how lucky we were. We loved him, respected him and were just a little bit afraid of him. He taught us not only how hard work leads to a sense of accomplishment, but also how to have fun while we were working hard. He instilled a life-long love of music in many of us. Anyone who was a student of “Uncle Earl, as many of us referred to him, know what a treasure we have lost. Peggy Debien Port Clinton Dear Editor, I read TellTales dated May 21st and just wanted to let you know that my father, Mike Savulak, Jr. (88) is also a survivor of the battle on Iwo Jima. He was a Marine Corp Drill Instructor at Paris Island, S.C. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained on Iwo. Today, he

has mild dementia and resides at Hearthstone Assisted Living of Lorain. Just wanted to let those vets know that there is another survivor out there. Thanks. Michael J. Savulak Port Clinton Dear Editor, On May 7th, my daughter paid $l7.50 to express mail me a “Mother’s Day card from Florida, to ensure delivery before Mother’s Day. The letter arrived at the Port Clinton post office on May 8th. On May 9th, the Saturday before Mother’s Day, my doorbell rang, and I answered in less than a minute’s time. No one there, but I did observe a person returning from the vicinity of my mailbox, enter their vehicle and leave. When I checked my mailbox, I found a notice from the Post Office stating “failure to deliver express mail and I could either pick it up after May llth, or call and ask for redelivery on Monday. I called on Monday and a postal employee did deliver the “express

mail that morning. So much for paying $l7.50 to ensure delivery in a timely manner. I feel I answered my doorbell in less than a minute, but obviously this employee did not think this was fast enough. I feel for the person who may be slower than me, on crutches, in a wheelchair, or impaired in any way as I am pretty fast, but evidently not quick enough to ensure “express delivery mail was made, even though $l7.50 was paid for it. I registered a complaint with the Postmaster General, John Potter, in Washington DC. I have since received a reply that this matter is being investigated on a state level, and I will hear further from them. I feel this employee should be severely reprimanded, since they evidently feel no obligation to doing their job properly. The postal service is in trouble now and should only hire responsible employees one’s who do their jobs properly! Carol Carstensen Catawba Island

Last week I wrote about a short vacation in southern and central Michigan and forgot to write about staying the first night there in a town called Ionia. It is a beautiful little city with downtown buildings about the same vintage as Port Clinton’s. In Ionia, these have been painted to show off their architectural trim. The main street is bricked over and a lot of flowers have been planted along the main street in little gardens or planters. It is a really neat place. Good use has been made of the old buildings. The railroad depot was converted to a beauty salon some years ago. That building’s history is still apparent, both inside and out. For example, the tiny tiles on the interior floor are original. There were plenty of parking places because areas behind the downtown shops had been cleared away to make room for shopper’s cars. Ionia was interesting and a good place to spend a quiet time of reflection and sightseeing. --------So, how about it? Do you have your spring cleaning finished? It’s less than two weeks until the official start of summer, June 21, so if your cleaning isn’t finished it is definitely time to get at it. Here are some of my traditional suggestions and hints for getting the job done: Use every few minutes of “down time” to get something done. While waiting for dinner to cook, clean out a drawer or shelf in the kitchen cupboards. Wash a few windows (or even just one or two) at a time. Keep the supplies handy and wash a window when you have a few minutes to spare. Do the same with wiping off mirrors, computers and television screens. Mentally divide a room into areas. Tackle just one area at a time. Don’t try to move every stick of furniture at once. Easy does it! Wash curtains one pair at a time. You will be able to do them with the regular laundry. This also holds true for scatter rugs, doilies, dresser scarves, runners, etc. Just do a couple and put them back where they belong. When wiping dust off woodwork, keep a clean cloth wrapped around the end of a long stick (such as a broom handle or yard stick). Reach up (or down) and wipe things off quickly to remove dust and cobwebs. Dresser drawers – oh, mercy – there are always so many dresser drawers to clean at this time of year! Do one dresser – or even one drawer at a time. All except the youngest children should take responsibility for their own dressers and closets. And this is the perfect time to get rid of anything occupying too much space. Some cleaning jobs are really just “sorting: and can be done while sitting down to watch television or a movie. Costume jewelry, small linens, craft supplies, silverware drawers, junk drawers, tool drawers, playing cards, game boards and their playing pieces – all that can be sorted and re-arranged at the end of a day while you’re relaxing. And here’s one more hint to help keep your house clean. In an article in Woman’s Day magazine it was reported that it takes ten steps inside the house to get rid of the dirt from outside that comes in on your shoes. So be sure you have floor mats at the doors. (I like them both inside and out.) Ask people to wipe their feet when they come in. If it’s wet or muddy outside, everyone should remove shoes at the door. If this rule absolutely cannot be enforced at your house, then make sure there are plenty of mats and throw rugs to catch the dirt as it comes in and before it gets tracked through the entire house. Good luck with your cleaning. But let’s take time for some fun, too, because summer won’t last forever. It’s time to go to the beach, be outside, do gardening if you love it, cook some meals on the grill, eat lots of meals al fresco (this also helps keep your kitchen and dining room clean!) and take regular picnics to the park. Take a boat ride, try water sports and plan a neat vacation. And now is not too soon to start thinking about Independence Day. This year the legal holiday is on Friday, July 3, making a nice threeday weekend. You’re sure to find something special to do if you make your plans early. --------The Vineyard on Catawba is hosting an Ice Cream Social June 26th from 2 to 5 p.m. Bring your blanket or chair to the lawn around the gazebo there and then relax while listening to 50s, 60s and 70s music performed by “The Senior Class”, a vocal group from Genoa. Toft’s ice cream will be hand dipped all afternoon. Campus tours will be available. The Vineyard on Catawba is located at 3820 E. Vineyard Village Drive off West Catawba Road. Call 419-

797-3100 for more information. --------Trinity United Methodist Church has planned its annual Vacation Bible School for July 19, 20, 21, 22 and 24. Note that there are BY VIRGINIA PARK no classes on Thursday, July 23. Again this year a light “child-friendly” supper will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m. with all participants welcome. Activities of music, crafts, Bible stories and fun will follow. There will be classes for all elementary age children and a class for adults. Melissa McBride is the school coordinator. The theme is Camp E.D.G.E., an acronym for “Experience and Discover God Everywhere”. All children and adults in the community are welcome to attend. Registration will be required and more information will be coming about that later. For now, just make a notation about the dates on your calendar. --------Here’s something else to mark on your calendar. The Toledo Symphony concert Band will perform an Independence Day Concert on Saturday, July 4. This is free, open to the public, and will be held on the grounds of the President Rutherford B. Hayes home, Spiegel Grove, at Fremont. Watch later news releases for the time. Among the patriotic music performed will be the “National Anthem”, “God Bless America” and the “1812 Overture”. The overture will be complemented by the traditional cannon-fire provided by Civil War re-enactors. Be sure to take a lawn chair so you have good seating because this patriotic event has attracted as many as 5,000 attendees. --------And here’s another fun event. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society will hold its annual auction at 1 p.m. on July 11 at the Crescent Tavern Pavilion in the village of Put-inBay. Many sales items will be on display starting at about 10 a.m. Among the sales wares are several things from the Brown-Alexander collection recently purchased. There will be antiques, artifacts, memorabilia and more… --------U.S. Congresswomen Marcy Kaptur (Ohio District Nine) recently sent a report to her constituents in a newsletter. She points out in her headline article on the first page: “In Northern Ohio, we enjoy one of the most abundant and naturally sustainable regions of the world. Fresh water, superb arable land, virtually unlimited sun and wind power, plus a key global location – there are precious resources most of the world’s population desires. These have been gifted to us as an endowment. Our community’s future strength lies in using them more wisely and sustainably. In the past, they built great opportunity for us. They are vital to our future. Coupling their power with creativity, innovation, and persevering spirits will carry us forward. May this time of challenge and crisis usher in a noble era of unparalleled achievement. Let this be remembered as a time when a persevering people used their creativity to build a more sustainable community and nation.” Marcy Kaptur also has said, “Americans are a resilient people. We know we can meet every challenge set before us.” It seemed totally great to me to read some really positive comments. Most of our media sources seem intent on telling us how bad conditions are in our country. We all know that times are tough and may get tougher. We also know that we have to stay the course until the situation gets better - whenever that may be. So let’s just dig in, help each other whenever we can, take care of our families, our neighborhoods and our earth. We’re all in this together. So let’s be the kind of “persevering people” that Marcy Kaptur asks the people of her district to be.

State Rep. Murray Hosts Ottawa County Advocates Eight Ottawa County residents from state Rep. Dennis Murray’s 80th Ohio House District spent Tuesday, June 2nd in Columbus to advocate for the interests of Ottawa County citizens with state government agencies. The group included representatives of small business owners, industry, environmentalists and other activists. These citizens met with state Rep. Dennis Murray Jr., DSandusky, to hear him discuss the initiatives he is working on to assist homeowners who have suffered job losses and are facing foreclosure; survivors of domestic violence; residents of economically distressed neighborhoods and families and retirees who would like to reduce energy costs utilizing alternative energy such as geothermal power. Murray asked Port Clinton City Councilwoman Debra Benko to organize the event for Ottawa County residents after Sandusky City Commissioner Dave Waddington and other Erie County residents made a similar visit to Columbus in April.

Financial Focus Don’t Let Your Investments Take a Vacation Summer is almost here. And for GARY COON, many people, summer is synonymous EDWARD JONES with “vacation.” If you have children INVESTMENTS or grandchildren, they’re most likely on vacation from school, and if you’ve got the time and motivation, you may take a family vacation over the next few months. But there’s one part of your life that should never go on vacation — and that’s your investment portfolio. How can you keep your investments working for you in all seasons? Here are a few suggestions to consider: • Don’t stop investing. If you want your investment dollars to continue working, you can’t pull them out of the “work force.” Unfortunately, many people try to do just that by jumping out of the financial markets when they’re slumping. By doing so, these investors reason, they can avoid taking heavy losses while they bide their time until the market recovers. But if you make a habit out of trying to avoid the market’s bad days, you may end up missing some of its good ones. No one can predict when a bull market will begin, so if you’re out of the market when it starts, your “vacation” from investing could prove expensive. • Don’t rely too much on “lazy” investments. Some investments, by their nature, are going to work harder to help you achieve your long-term goals. To be precise, stocks and stock-based accounts have the potential to help provide the growth you need, though of course the value of these securities can constantly fluctuate. Conversely, “lazy” securities such as certificates of deposit may produce returns that barely keep up with inflation. That’s not to say there’s

no place for these types of investments in your portfolio — after all, they provide both current income and a high degree of preservation of principal — but you simply can’t rely on them to offer the long-term returns that can help you retire comfortably or attain other objectives. • Don’t let your portfolio drift. If you buy a few investments here and there, without rhyme or reason, your portfolio may never work as hard for you as it should. And that’s why you need to develop a solid, cohesive, long-term investment strategy — one that accommodates your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific goals. Once you’ve es-

tablished such a strategy, you can use it to determine the right investment mix for your portfolio. Over time, you may need to adjust that mix in response to changes in the financial world and your own life, but overall it should stay true to your strategy. As you go through life, you’ll find it important to take a vacation now and then, to escape from the pressures of work and to enjoy extra time with family and friends. But there’s no reason to ever give your investments a day off — so do what you can to keep them gainfully employed. This article was provided by Edward Jones.

Magruder Auxiliary to Host Third Annual Golf Fundraiser Magruder Hospital’s Auxiliary is hosting its third annual golf outing, “Golfing for the Goal, on Monday, July 20th, on the Catawba Island Club (CIC) golf course. The goal for this year’s outing is the purchase of new digital mammography technology for the hospital. According to Bob Hille, chairperson for this year’s event, the hospital is on track to purchase the technology this year. “We decided we would do one more outing where the funds would benefit the purchase of digital mammography. The technology is very expensive, and the Auxiliary knows donating money toward this purchase will help the hospital, said Hille. The format for the event, according to Hille, will be the same as the prior two years. “This event starts with registration and lunch at 11 a.m. followed by skill challenge games at Noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and prizes will follow at the

Catawba Island Club. This year Hille said the event has attracted a chance to win some big ticket prizes thanks to the support of one individual and several area businesses. “We have some local businesses and a Magruder physician sponsoring chances to win some great prizes. Northern Manufacturing is sponsoring a chance to win a trip to Italy, Edward D. Jones and Baumann Auto Center in Port Clinton are sponsoring chances to win a new car on two separate holes, Dr. Carl Steele is donating a champagne cruise for eight on his 54’ sailboat “Spirit for the winning team, and Bassett’s Market is donating a gourmet meal for six prepared by Chef Hannah, said Hille. Teams are available on a first come first serve basis for the first 30 teams. For more information on the outing, including sponsor and team registration forms, go to www.magruderhospital.com or call Linda Sprenger at 419-734-3131 Ext. 3140.
