BY CHRIS MCBAIN-BERRY ASSISTANT EDITOR We’re free. It’s that simple. That’s what PFC Charles Stepanian of Marblehead chooses to say about the day he spent on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944 which is also known as the 24 hours that saved the world. During his service to the country he was a member of the 112th Engineer Combat Battalion, the 1st Army at Omaha Beach and the 3rd Army at the Battle of the Bulge under General George Patton. “All those medals…none of that means anything to me, really,” he said. “What I’m proud of is what I did for the country…fighting for freedom, for America to be free.” He also said that he is no hero. The heroes are those that didn’t come back. Saturday is the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion in WW II. In Normandy, France it was a day when 40,000 Americans lost their lives (129 from Ottawa County) and a day that Stepanian doesn’t care to dwell on. In fact, he has never been back to the beaches and doesn’t speak much of his experience. “I had a job to do,” was his explanation. “I joined the Army National Guard when I was about 17 years old and volunteered for duty. “We were briefed on the boat on the way over (to Normandy) and were told that a lot of us would not be coming back. Everyone was scared.” His memory of General Patton

action against the enemy during December 1944 in Germany at the Battle of the Bulge in repelling, for three days, the desperate attempts by the Germans who led five attacks. The citation mentioned eventual hand-to hand combat which was successful in driving back enemy forces, denying Germans access to a vital road and contributed largely to the ultimate defeat of the German offensive in Ardennes. His honorable discharge papers were issued for October 15, 1945 ending his five years of service to the United States of America. Now, these days, he is free to enjoy the company of his wife Vembia and his children: Pam Provo, Darlene Bowser and Michele McGraw, all of Marblehead, son Greg Stepanian of Oak Harbor and Wanda Swope of Toledo.

corresponded with all that has been written and said about the General. “He was a good General, not soft. He was known as ‘blood and guts’. We did things the way Patton wanted so none of us would get killed.” “I had a job to do and was lucky to get out alive,” said Stepanian who was once hit in the chest by shrapnel but was uninjured because of his vest. The memories of specific experiences haven’t seemed to dull over the years, but are left unsaid in favor of the results they accomplished. Perhaps his two Presidential Citations, special license plate for his 112th Engineer Combat Battalion and shadow box of 15 medals, lapel pins, dog tags, arm patches, sharpshooter medals, badges, and the pictures and numerous newspaper articles in his scrapbook tell the story for him. The Presidential Citation referring to D-Day states that his battalion was given the specific mission of clearing a beach exit, sweeping the road of mines, clearing a vehicle transit area and supporting another battalion in engineering work in their common defense. He cleared the beach of underwater obstacle, mines and barbed-wire while under heavy assault. The document went on to praise the extraordinary heroism and the foresight and technical skill which led to the establishment of a firm beachhead on the Continent of Europe. His battalion was also praised in another Presidential Citation for outstanding performance of duty in

Dear Editor, I read the tribute for William L. Matthews with interest. I flew helicopter gunships in the Khe Sanh, Dong Ha and Hue areas in the spring and summer of 1968. The description of Khe Sanh was right on. I remember that the first time I flew into Khe Sanh, about the only thing above ground were the carcasses of wrecked or destroyed aircraft and other equipment. Everything (and everyone) else were in bunkers underground. That included the control tower operator. When I radioed for landing instructions, the tower operator poked his head out of his bunker, looked around for other aircraft, and them gave me the OK to land. Those were arduous and dangerous times for combat soldiers and airmen operating in the area. Steve Martin Brigadier General (retired) Catawba Island Dear Editor, Otto Von Bismark some time ago said “there are two things you don’t want to see made, legislation and sausage”. Today the making of legislation has become even worse. The normal process for legislating should be for a bill to

be presented to Congress and it’s their duty to read, digest, debate the bill and then reject it or pass it into law. Unfortunately, today we have a Congress that never bothers to read, digest or debate - they just pass laws. Consequently, we have seen bills like The Patriot Act over 2500 pages given to Congress two hours before they passed it into law, which not one Congressman read. It was the most heinous assault on our liberty one could imagine. We had a Stimulus bill of over 1,100 pages which spent more money at one time than ever before, never read or digested and yet passed into law. Penn Gillette, a member of the comedy team, said the last time he made a decision that fast he wound up with five cases of Sham Wows. When the few Americans with a backbone stood up and demanded Congress read what they sign into law, we saw the height of arrogance, ignorance and disrespect for the voters as Congress hired a speed reader who read about a page every five seconds as these politicians smirked with their in your face attitude. What is it going to take America for you to wake up and sweep out the halls of Congress? Jim Boehm Port Clinton

Wagoner Selected For Honor State Senator Mark Wagoner is one of 40 emerging state leaders from across the nation selected for the prestigious Toll Fellowship Program sponsored by The Council of State Governments, September 12-17, 2009. The annual week-long seminar, named in honor of Henry Toll, a Colorado senator who founded CSG in 1933, seeks to develop the next generation of leaders from all three branches of state government. This year’s dynamic program, held in Lexington, Ky., focuses on trends analysis, policy development, media and constituent relations, and leadership and institutional changes. The experience gives these leaders perspectives they would not ordinarily obtain during the course of their regular governmental service. This year’s applicant pool included state leaders from all three branches and represented 40 states and two US territories. Past Toll Fellowship graduates include governors, US Senators and members of Congress, as well as leaders in state government.

I tried many times to quit smoking. I attended a group hypnosis session, tried the nicotine patch and attempted cold turkey. Nothing worked. Nothing until I met David Prudhomme. CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

It seemed a good idea to plan a short vacation for early this year because there were lots of events appearing on the calendar as well as some schooling scheduled at Alliance College. Some time away in early spring – and then again in October – seemed to be a good option. So, as I write this I’m sitting in the lounge of the “Ship and Shore” motel in Saugatuck, Michigan. Not more than 15 feet away is the river. Across the river are other guesthouses. There is a chain ferry right here next to the motel to transport folks to the other side. Driving into town I saw many shops and art galleries along the main street. Tomorrow will be a great time to explore them. For now I’ll sit with a cup of coffee (because there’s a little nip in the air), watch the boats, write, and think about getting ready to go out to dinner. This motel is quite unusual. At the front the typical registration desk but straight on through there is a large lounge, almost surrounded on three sides with windows and glass doors. Spreading out to either side are the “arms” of the motel (two floors). Between that and the river are some very fine gardens. On the river a big boat, the “Carol Ann” is docked. It looks something like a tug. In this lounge there are two fireplaces and a small indoor waterfall. It’s filled with chairs and couches in brown wicker and tables with faux marble tops. It’s a perfect place to sit and write Beacon Bits. The Saugatuck/Douglas area has been named one of the top twelve “Distinctive Destinations” for 2009. History, art, outdoor recreation, and natural resources combine here to give visitors a varied vacation. Later this summer there will be masses of crowds, but at this time of year it’s fairly quiet and sedate. In keeping with my vow to stay close to home on this vacation, I started with an overnight stay at Sunnybrook Conference Center and Trout Club. To reach this from Port Clinton, drive across the Sandusky Bay Bridge, exit the by-pass at Route 6 and turn left into the first driveway. You will find a fascinating place. The Farrell Lodge (a private residence built in 1941) has 26 rooms, ten of which are bedrooms rented on a daily and weekly basis. Owens Corning bought the facility in 1968 for its employees and customers. In 1987 a group of investors purchased the property and named it the Sunnybrook Conference Center. Currently it’s privately owned and the house is also used as a clubhouse for Fishing Club members. The expansive grounds have 1.25 miles of cold, fast flowing streams. In them are Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout. There is also a ten-acre bass lake, secluded acreage, and many places to walk, sit, drowse and relax. The streams come out of “The Blue Hole” at Castalia and run quickly about six miles to Sandusky Bay. The streams do not freeze, and fishing is good year-round. The clubhouse is available for business meetings, clubs (such as quilting clubs), and retreats. Some meals are served. For more information, call 419-625-8353 or look at www.sunnybrooktroutclub.com. ~~~~~~~~~ It’s now a couple of days later (late Sunday afternoon), and I’m on my way north from Holland Michigan. From Saugatuck and Douglas there were great views of the river and the Kalamazoo Bay. Across the water from Saugatuck a big old passenger steam ship, the “Keewatin” is anchored at the shoreline and has been converted to a Maritime Museum. This is billed as the “Last of the Classic Passenger Steamships” – whatever that means. She first sailed in 1907 from Scotland to Montreal, was cut into two sections in order to be brought through the Welland Canal and reassembled at Buffalo. She was in regular passenger service from 1908 to 1965. She’s been in the Saugatuck-Douglas area since 1967 and is open for public viewing from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It wouldn’t be appropriate to write about Saugatuck and Douglas without mentioning art. For a long time (decades) Saugatuck has been an artists’ colony, and there are many art galleries featuring painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry, pottery – you name it - it’s there. Much of it is very beautiful, and most of it is affordable. Shopping offers a wide array of items – and upscale clothing may be found everywhere there. Many people

from Chicago come to Saugatuck for summer vacations or have cottages or condos there. I was told that, depending on where they live in Chicago, folks can reach Saugatuck in 2-3 hours. Of course, some also come by boat.

BY VIRGINIA PARK

The Saugatuck – Douglas area has at least one other claim to fame. It is called the “Bed and Breakfast Capital of the Midwest”. There are all kinds B&B’s and a wide range of prices. There are also hotels, motels and resort complexes. To learn more contact www.saugatuckdouglas.com or 269-857-1701. ~~~~~~~~~ On the way north I wanted to see the tulips in Holland, Michigan. Although just past the time of the Tulip Festival, about 50% of the tulips were still in bloom. A good place to see them was at Veldheer’s Tulip Farm where they were planted in long masses. Each variety was numbered. If you liked a particular kind, you mark the number on an order sheet and, back in the retail shop, place an order for bulbs to be shipped in September for October planting. The farm also has a herd of bison, several windmills and a working factory where wooden shoes are made. There is a large showroom of Delft pottery and other “Dutch” items. Contact 616-399-1900 or veldheer.com ~~~~~~~~~ Next on the tour agenda was a short evening stop at the casino at Mount Pleasant on an Indian reservation. I had dinner there but didn’t enjoy that environment at all. It seemed like a waste of time. There were hundreds of people there, and I saw only two who were smiling. If gambling is so much fun, why aren’t people happier in a casino. ~~~~~~~~~ On to Frankenmuth… and a good sunny day made it pleasant to be out and about. There is shopping and sightseeing and plenty of home style eating in that little town. The Frankenmuth Historical Museum was very impressive. In it there are eight small galleries, each featuring a unique part of the area’s history. The first German settlers came there in 1845, having traveled aboard a ship called the “Caroline”. They wanted a better life for themselves and wanted to take Christianity to Native American peoples. This part of the history is depicted in a “gallery” that shows people aboard a ship and a gallery where an American Indian is being taught to read. The people who were models for the life-size sculptured figures are actual descendants of the original settlers. The galleries feature missionary work, home life, lumbering, education, business development, the eras of the two world wars, breweries (including during Prohibition) and present day Frankenmuth. This museum also has temporary exhibits. The current one is about the life of Abraham Lincoln, primarily during the Civil War. The time of Lincoln’s death at the hands of assassin John Wilkes Booth is also covered. ~~~~~~~~~ Well, tonight as I finish writing the preceding section I’m in a motel near Birch Run. Tomorrow is a day set aside for “realistic” shopping. I have a list of things I need and hope to find them at the outlet shops. My guess is that by tomorrow night at this time I’ll be a good bit further south, maybe near Detroit, to spend the night. That’s because Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum are next of the list. After that it’s the Toledo Museum of Art and home. ~~~~~~~~~ Well, plans changed…It’s Tuesday night and I’m still at Birch Run, and happy to be here. My shopping was successful and I purchased cards, birthday presents, graduation presents and even Christmas gifts. It’s always a help to get those things done in advance. I bought some summer attire for myself and went back to Frankenmuth for dinner again this evening. I’ve decided to cut this vacation travel a little short. It’s been a lot of driving, then packing and unpacking in motel rooms. By tomorrow (Wednesday) night, I’ll be home after taking a bit of a jaunt around some places in northwest Ohio. On Saturday there are graduation parties because it’s that time of year. It’s been fun, but I’m glad to be homeward bound.

Recently, the American Library Association ranked it in the top three percent of medium sized libraries in the nation. The ranking was based on scores of its organizational efficiency, quality of service, stewardship of public money and the quality of its collection of books and other library materials. Crawford has been named the Director of the Lakewood Library System. His last day at the library is July 15.

Ohio’s housing market continued to provide positive signs of stabilization in April – posting an increase in sales over the prior month for the third consecutive reporting period and a renewed buzz among the industry’s professionals that consumers are poised to get off the fence and into the market, reports the Ohio Association of REALTORS . “We’re optimistic about the long-term prospects of the Ohio real estate marketplace‌the light at the end of the tunnel is not too far off,â€? said OAR President Jonathan M. Hall. “The housing sector in the Buckeye State, like much of the nation, has begun to shake off the doldrums brought on by the financial crisis and global economic downturn. While not reflected in our sales activity report, REALTORS throughout the state are reporting increased interest among potential buyers as a result of the $8,000 non-repayable tax credit for first time home buyers, the historic low interest rates, an abundance of affordable housing in all price categories and realistic expectations among both buyers and sellers,â€? Hall added.
